Hunting Down an Electrical Fault on the Rear Windows of the Rolls Royce - PART 14

  • In episode 14 I attempt to find out why the rear electric windows are not working. Is the fault linked on both of them? What do both windows have in common? Maybe it is 2 separate faults. Let's find out.
My biggest challenge yet! Can I FIX a 1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit with too many faults to list, there is more wrong with it than right. Will I end up crying into my Connolly leather seats or will this beast live on.
This is the cheapest Rolls Royce in the UK so I wasn't expecting much, hopefully bit by bit with sheer determination and zero skill I will attempt to fix each fault one by one.
This is PART 14 of this series. Every part will be filmed, and I hope to discover the craftmanship that has gone into this 34 year old moving piece of art.
    Merch is here!!!!! www.puddlt.com...

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

There are ways. When I was fitting my rear camera in my Toyota there was supposed to be wiring already there for it. I did try to trace it but it's pretty tricky. What I did was short out connectors in the plug and check for continuity at the other end. With the battery off of course.

I have a Silver Spirit two years older than yours but much better maintained now and in the past. Your tenacity in this episode particularly in dealing with rusty connections, maze of wires and dead ends ( including the dead end causing the failure) is a master clashing fault finding. I SO admire that you never give up. Lucky son of yours to see this great example of staying the course.

So Ive been watching all your RR fixes. My Lexus I bought used in Aug 2021. Never had a working passenger side window. it rolled up and down from the Drivers master panel. But NOT from the passenger seat panel. So I knew the motor was fine. I then checked the fuses and relays. Which I spent 2 hours googling a diagram as my owners manuals had nothing. Each fuse had a code on it that made no sense. So I finally found one similar from a car like mine a few years older. All fuses and relays checked out fine. No issues. Last thing left is to pry off the switch panel, without tearing the surrounding gorgeous cream colored leather. Then I can check the plug connections and wires and clean the switch and inspect it for damage. So I went to the auto parts store and they wanted $11 for plastic pry tools for interior trim. No way. I went to the DOLLAR TREE store, and got a stainless steel rounded corners spatula with rounded handle and face for $1 USD. And I used the handle part narrow, and carefully pried up the panel. This was after searching youtube for videos how to take the panel out. I didnt want to break anything doing it. I found a video, that the back of panel showed 4 L shaped clips. Just push one side forward and up and it will come right out. No damage. And it did. So I flipped panel over and the door lock plug was connected but the window plug was not. Somebody had been in there before and disconnected it for some reason and never re connected it. I sprayed all contacts with electrical cleaner spray WD40, and reconnected it and tested it. All 100% working. EZ fix that took me 12 months to attempt..lol You inspired me Vince to get it over with and fix the dang thing. Now my passengers are no longer annoyed.

I'm sure you've figured this out eventually, but you don't need to pull a car's fuses to check them, they have small holes on each side of the contact and can be checked for continuity right there.

Wee done, you cracked it in the end.
Three things I'd suggest. Might be a good idea to have a good luck at the wiring diagram to see how it all works!
Second, get a decent 12volt test light, it's a very useful thing for fault finding on older cars, a multimeter can mislead.
Thirdly, get a bigger soldering iron, at least 75 Watt. Small irons are no good on biggish automotive wiring.
Looking forward to seeing what part you tackle next..

re: front window going up wonky, based on audi's doing this, there'll be two (plastic) runners that the window sits in, one front one back, and you'll find one of them has cracked/disintegrated/lying in the bottom of the door channel, so now the window lifts, but goes wonky as it is being pushed unevenly

Not sure if continuity testing is the best approach for faults in auto electrics. I found the best way of proceeding with fault diagnosis is firstly check fuses and if good check for power and ground AT THE FAULT. So if power windows are faulty check for 12v at the motor. If 12v present check ground. If 12v and ground OK it's probably a bad motor (assuming mechanical drive is OK). If there's no power at the motor chase the fault back all the way to the battery if necessary and you'll eventually find what's stopping the 12v from reaching the motor.

  • @The_Actual_CarlJr
    @The_Actual_CarlJr 2 роки тому +1

I like to troubleshoot something like this from the problem and work backward. For example, you expect the motor to move with voltage so check for that voltage. If you don't have it supply it and check for functionality. If it works go back to the next item/connection you expect voltage. Using resistance to check for faults makes it harder to find shorts to ground or broken wires. By supplying voltage where you expect it may also help you isolate the problem. Once it works you know the problem exists in that area. And always hit the wiring diagram first, when I worked on cars having a diagram was a rare luxury. I've done similar jobs many times and my back hurts just watching. Good job.

4:03 If you look at the top of the fuses there are 2 holes on the top.
Those holes are there on purpose so you can test the fuses without needing to remove it.
You may get the wrong reading if there is a short when testing between both holes. You can test for it by probing both sides to ground instead.
If one side beep and the other not you have a blow fuse and a short.
If both sides beep you have a ok fuse and a short.
If both sides don't beep to ground but they beep between themselves the fuse is good and there is no short.

  • @jochenstacker7448

You have to look at relays as the actual switch. The knob you push couldn't handle the power needed for power hungry applications. So the knob activates the relay. It's a switch for the switch.
I would only have one suggestion. You always trace wires and measure continuity. You would do better to measure voltage before continuity. When there is voltage present, you have completed two tests in one.
So, voltage first and only if no voltage present, continuity.

Buy yourself some car wire with the different colour codes, using the wrong colours codes just makes it difficult in future. Also proper car wire is flexible, designed for multiple flexes. My Honda Jazz needed the drivers door wires renewed because the door was opened and shut so many times the wires were broken in multiple places between the door and the pillar. Remember lots of functions run through the drivers door as a "master" circuit - so problems elsewhere could be just broken wire(s) in the drivers door loom. The wire doesn't have to part to be faulty - just the cooper inside the plastic can part - it looks ok but isn't!

So glad you did not solder the wire where it had broken as it would have just broken again due to the solder making the flexible wire solid.
The conduit for the wires is not the door check strap, the door check strap is build into the bottom hinge, its the thing you spend so long freeing up due to corrosion as it was making a right noise.
Some spray silicon on the window seals should aid them moving up & down but with the battery voltage also below 12 volts that will not be helping their cause.
When doing electrical work I would just leave the charger connected to the battery whilst install in the vehicle or bypass the battery completely and connect the charger directly to the leads on the car.
This is if you have a proper battery charger & not one of those little overnight chargers that take days to charge a battery.

  • @digihorse6730
    @digihorse6730 2 роки тому

Nice job again Vince. I think you fixed two different faults here one by cleaning joints fixing the passenger rear window. The other with the Yellow/white wire as that is the wire from the Fuse ONLY feeding the Driver side rear motor. I cannot see how that wire could ever feed the passenger rear motor unless someone is feeding both motors from one fuse (spliced wire somewhere) which is unlikely. To me it looks like from the drawings that the motors are (in the stop position) fed with +v on both ends of the motor. When you press a switch one side or the other of he motor is then connected to -ve so powering the motor in the given direction. The Isolation switch in the middle removes the -ve to all the rear switches. The diode board isn’t used at all in this with one diode only being used to power relay 20 if the car is Australian spec. If i have time I’m going to draw out some power paths.

When doing the gears on the drivers seat I think it would have paid you to do both sides of the same seat. Once you figured one bit of gearing was stiff it would have been better to do the other half as well, both sides are probably the same or nearly. My Jazz did over 120k miles and needed this kind of work all over, all the door wiring was suspect - speakers didn't work because the wires had snapped internally.

very interesting. In Canada (north America) the master window switches at the driver door, the one furthest away from the driver is generally the drivers Window(in our case the left hand front window). In your video the front switch was for the rear left hand side window.

When testing those fuse put a voltage through them to confirm they are working. We had a fuse on VW Polo that passed continuity but still was a failure.

Under the steering wheel compartment there is a part with two square holes and there are square plastic plugs available that push in there like raw plugs with a screw hole for that windscreen wiper control to screw to.

I love how heavy duty the switchery looks, not to mention the ridiculously big board with the tiny diodes. Still gremlins find their way.
