I was able to pause on the red square, but after I started watching for visual cues. Maybe another way to put it would be death bombing is the bullet hell equivalent of coyote time from platformers?
"The red square is my friend and I would like it if you could treat him with respect" This is what years of video games can do to a person. Take notes!
2:40 at first i didn't even see that red square because I blinked at the EXACT same time and thought of a troll, guess that proves your point even further x)
To me the death sound is so loud and irritating that it always makes me unconsciously press X. Sometimes that makes me deathbomb, other times it doesn't.
My brain just dies when I hear the death sound so whenever I pull off a deathbomb on complete accident to try and save myself from death, my brain just dies and gets confused lol
Did you know that alchohol increases the chance of pulling off a deathbomb for touhou games in hard and lunatic difficulty but also increases the risk of missing with bombs in stock?
It's the adrenaline I believe, like how time feels slower when u sprint at max speed. Time feels slower as well when you are dodging bullets with full concentration.
Note for all viewers: The bomb test is incorrect, as i have measured it is the harder EoSD timing (6 frames) not the normal timing (8 frames), 2:39 and use , to skip 1 frame back and . to skip one frame forward
You can make the reaction "involuntary" by playing really much. Your index finger will move when you die, which counts as a reflex, so pure natural reaction can help you deathbomb as well, though inconsistent and still requires lots of practice
it took me more than 10 times. but i managed to pause the video at 2:39 before the death sound but while the square was on screen. it's no wonder i can't deathbomb in touhou
The problem with doing this test multiple times is that after a while you will (subconsciously) pick up auditory and visual cues, making anticipation play a role as well. Which is exactly why deathbombing frequently is possible.
I accidentally deathbombed a few times, so I tried to figure out more amd here I am. Thank you for making the guide, I understand this mechanic much better now.
Turns out I was one of the guys who had the wrong idea about deathbombing XD Thanks for making this video! I'll try not to rely on it so much, since it only seems to get me killed XD
oh mainbe you cant throw the bomb in the exactly moment but you can do a bit before when you learn when the bullet will inpact and you can shot the bomb before it....LIKE IN THE VIDEO I HIT THE BOX!!! BIFURI It ZUNds
1:16 Thanks for not showing the Border Team. I get the Border Team has a larger window than the other teams, but IN is very generous in granting more time for a deathbomb that you can pull it off with other characters. Thanks for representing us non-Border Team players. (Ghost Team player, btw.)
the fucking word pun in the last part where he said "expressing"... (turn on subtitles if you dont get what i mean) okay so, if you hear a death sound and a bomb sound, it means you saved a life. got it, thanks for clearing up my confusions on how to deathbomb!
When I first played EoSD on normal after weeks of playing on easy I accidentally learned how to deathbomb in the middle of a 1cc attempt. I saved the replay, but it didn't recognize the deathbombs. I was still new to a lot, but what was worse was the fact that I always had trouble deathbombing afterwards. Made me think the replay glitched out.
I beg to differ on the example used on 2:34 I'd say that reflexive deathbombing isn't exactly reflexive. Typically, when one suspects death, they prepare to bomb (or at least I do). It isn't so much a reflex as it is panic, therefore it would be easier to reflex/panic bomb in game than it would be to actually pause the screen, since we have no idea when "death" is coming. EDIT: And then I watched the rest of the video and realized that this was covered and I'm an idiot for making the assumption.
2:32 Oi! but that's cheating, since you can see If you are about to die In the game. This Is basically unpredictable Dx 3:39 fu eirin xD 4:35 that makes sense.. [4:42].... no It doesn't! >:u
I PAUSED RIGHT WHEN THE RED RECTANGLE POPPED UP WITHOUT CHANGING THE SPEED!!! Well, kinda. I rewinded the video three times to do it, but I still did it! Oh, and you mention that people who deathbomb all the time are just good at seeing when a bullet is about to hit them, but I deathbomb almost all the time simply because my reaction timing is several frames behind everybody elses.
If you rewind the video multiple times, you will get used to the timing and the visual cues and it will be about anticipation instead of reaction time. There's a reason I put the square at the point right where sumireko jumps, because if you rewind it, you will use that as a visual cue either consciously or subconsciously. Even if you did not pay attention to the background at all (which I doubt) you would at least have known that the square was going to pop up after about 3.5 seconds instead of the unknown amount of time I gave you at first, which means that not just reaction, but anticipation is helping you out.
Nice vid. I always loved deathbombing and I think I do it rather frequently, most of the times, it simply happens. Except on EoSD... I hate how deathbombing works there... -Also, did you forget about PCB Reimu´s extended Deathbomb timer.- -I mean you explained EoSD nerfing the db timer, IN´s last spells, TD DeathTrance, MoF db scoring strat... but no mention of PCB 0,25secs db timer Reimu? :/ (Plus it could have been used as an example where "Reflexive Deathbombing" is very possible)- I also heard Marisa and Sakuya have different deathbomb timers on PCB, but dont quote me on that. The Reimu thing is definitely a thing though. EDIT: Nevermind I cant read. Well still can somebody confirm the Marisa and Sakuya thing? Lastly, I missed the red square, but not by much. I probably could get it if I try 1 more time but I feel like that would be cheating. I already lost :(
I've deathbombed twice in EoSD and they were in response to realizing I couldn't dodge the bullets and trying to clear the screen with a bomb. if I get hit by a bullet I didn't see/anticipate, no way in hell am I deathbombing on reaction.
At this point, if you're complaining about deathbombs, i can only assume you're the kind of person who's actively SEARCHING for something to complain about.
Is there an advantage to death bombing as opposed to using your bomb before you die? I see everyone talk about death bombing but to me it just feels like a normal mechanic, like coyote time in platformers where you have just a bit of leeway where you can still jump while not on a platform, that's just QoL right? But then people keep talking about it so maybe there is an advantage to it that I don't know about.
Isnt the death bomb window in PCB and IN 15 frames (and 30 frames on IN spellcards)? Shouldnt I be able to deathbomb on reaction there if my average reaction speed is 220ms?
When it comes to death bombing, it's less "Clicking X when getting hit" and more so "Clicking X when seeing you're about to get hit". That's probably how the pros do it. This has been from a scrub, see ya.
You saying it is impossible to deathbomb by reaction but I can assure you that within 3 frames Of getting hit I'll have restarted an extra stage But seriously, good video
How many frames do we have to deathbomb with Reimu in PCB and in IN? And does slowmode increase the time we have too? I think deathbombing by reaction may be possible with Reimu in PCB if you react unconsciously and with slowmode, and sometimes in IN with Reimu and Yukari the deathbombing time is so big that I feel like the game is waiting for me to deathbomb
TheMyuken The deathbomb mechanic basically makes it way easier to react to imminent death and still save your life with a bomb. Those extra few frames to bomb in are often exactly the frames someone still ended up needing after recognising their demise. Some people also intentionally stall their bombs to the deathbomb window but this is a rare sight in "vanilla" survival play, in which case it's more of an advanced technique to get a little bit more damage in before the bomb happens. Stalling into deathbomb is a MoF scoring thing though.
To paraphrase what one of the other commenters said, in other games, if you bomb a millisecond too late, you're dead. In Touhou, instead of straightup dying, you can deathbomb instead.
Great video :D Though, we all know that the reason why people deathbomb is because they're just bad :D Though seriously, it goes pretty in depth -- as much as it can go, anyway, without being biased in some way -- and pretty great. Also, barely missed the pausing on the box. I guess reaction time just isn't all deathbombing is. Eventually you'll be able to read bullets right before they hit you, and bomb before you even get hit, preventing the deathbomb window altogether.
EoSD also gives you a bomb once you've reached certain scores. The same for all games, I guess. Correct me if I'm wrong. Edit: I'm wrong. Just remembered your scores give you a life, not a bomb. But, like Long live the 9 said, when you are at max (8) lives and you get an extend, you get a bomb instead. 3 months late
Actually in th8 the deathbomb window gets larger during a boss spellcard doesn't it ? As well as only Border Team gets a larger deathbomb window in general than any other team.
