The first thing i would say to someone new to the series is to USE SHIFT GODDAMN IT. Everytime a Let's play shows up in my feed the player mover around at 500km/h trying to dodge a bullet storm, which doesn't work
true, I get flusterated when I see an idiot on youtube who plays touhou for the first time and they don't just choose luantic mode, they also don't use the shift. I keep scream at the monitor "use the damn shift" and then I close the vedio. I think you did a vedio about that.
There are some Touhou main games that are harder on normal than other ones on hard (TH 11, 12, 15). So jumping straight into normal can be done with some games (TH 6, 7, 8), but not quite with all.
True, though I would also not recommend the games that have "crazy hard" normal modes as someone's first game. Luckily, that's what the next episode will be about :>
06 was fuckin ass tbh not really good to start on 7 or 8 are forgiving enough and tbh i didn't find 12 ALL THAT HARD OOH BOOH it's just that you gotta know how to get lives and that can be very very painful if you aren't experienced so yeah DONT START ON 12
I started with 06 and it was pretty difficult... now I'm playing pcb and can't seem to get accustomed to being able to see the hitbox lol, also the patterns seem more random than in 06???? Am I crazy? xD
Easiest Touhous for Normal 1cc's, are, not in order and with the right character (generally Reimu) : TH4 : ReimuA, homing shot ; Main difficulty : playing with no visible hitbox, and the old graphics, but otherwise a very straightforward game, that is learnable quite fast and stages are ridiculously easy with Reimu and her homing shots, you just have to stream a little and it's done. TH13 : Reimu ; Main difficulty : Playing with the Trance mode (C) and the few ressources given to you, otherwise fair and easy patterns to learn for the most part. TH8 : Border team, AKA Reimu and Yukari ; Main difficulty : Same as TH4 (minus the hitbox thing), and gathering enough ressources to beat stage 4 boss without losing too much lives. Also the option to get extra lives in the settings, like in every TH older than TH9, but i wouldn't recommend it because you get used to bad habits doing so, and you get less score, and less lives in the long run in the older TH. It's especially true for PC-98 Touhou games, where if you set for more or less lives than 3, it ruins your chances because of that. TH14 : ReimuA, Sakuya A, or Marisa B depending of if you want to abuse the shot power/hitbox/enemy attacks with Reimu/Sakuya, or if you want to have tons of ressources with Marisa B bombs on some attacks. Main difficulty : Getting used to the ressources system, Seija (stage 5 boss) flipping your commands, and Shymyoumaru (Stage 6 boss, prob not the right name) messing with your hitbox and the projectiles hitbox. This is all personal opinion, i'm not including TH6 because i feel like the game represents hitboxes pretty unfairly, especially for enemy projectiles hitboxes, no TH7 because Youmu is extremely brutal, and if you don't bomb spam with Sakuya you won't get very far unless you're already experienced with TH7. Also not including 10, because you need to understand how bomb works in this game, and where to bomb to really make it significantly easier, and the last boss presents a lot of challenge for a beginner, because of her last spell that last a long ass time, and kills a lot of runs when you're not experienced with her and are too used to bomb (which you will need to be to get to her anyway the first time). But if you know when to bomb (or glitch with MarisaB), then TH10 is also easy.
"care a little too much about a certain music video with rabbits" KEK i just critically checked this video even though i shouldn't, but to be honest i believe this is mostly aright for a video that has to be narrated. I also started in Normal with barely any pre-experience and built up to a 1cc and now i'm at the same level i started, but on Hard. Also, the EHHHHHH??? [shamed trait]??? ONLY KIDS DO THAT!!! is a previously existing meme called "kimogirls" but it was adapted to Touhou by the master memelords of the IYOSIS circle, just in case you did't know
I remember a little less than a year ago when I got my first 1cc on normal in TH 9 playing as Aya. My friend was sitting next to me cheering me on and when the credits rolled we were screaming we were so happy. Truly no moment like the moment you get your first 1cc.
TrickOfHat I agree I hope that the Touhou community realises that making of people who play on easy mode. I have a friend who playing Touhou on easy mode he is now a lunatic player.
About the "Which Game Should You Start With?" video, I recommend not picking Ten Desiresfor a first game. Not only does the story make little sense to those who are new to Touhou, but the lack of resources could be very harmful to you in the long run. It was my first game and I still suffer from the over-obsession with collecting power items and reserving all my lives and bombs. Personally, a much better option would be Hidden Star in Four Seasons. It has both easy danmaku patterns and a decent amount of resources, which will make it very easy to start off on. ZUN himself described it as "an ordinary stg with no big twists" meaning gimmicks shouldn't be too big of a deal to you when playing it.
Although it's not recommended to tackle HSiFS on Normal or above since at that point it's just abusing the Release system, which isn't an ideal way to learn playing Touhou specifically and Shmups in general
I see a lot of USE TEH SHIFT KEY everytime something Touhou related is aimed for begginners, but, at least personally, my problem was learning when to use it. I didn't even let go of the shift key (even nowadays I have some trouble with that), even without people telling me to use it. That, and learning when to bomb, is perhaps something you should explain in a future episode, because I feel like people making fun of lets players who ignore the existance of the shift key and bomb with every graze point might give newcomers a wrong idea of how to survive.
I do agree on the use of easy mode, but for a different reason. I would highly recommend that new players tackle easy mode first so that they can get to learn how the game`s mechanics work. It`s a lot harder to pay attention to the stuff on the right with all the chaos of the higher difficulties.
I went from Easy to Hard practice in around 3 years (yes, I'm too slow because I'm an easygoing dude). I started on Easy because of low self trust. I just kept hating that Overdrive meme. Going from Easy to Normal was kinda brutal, like, bullets were more threatening, I had to continue doing some Normal mode practice to git gud, some games were eradicating me (11, 12 or 15), some weren't that much (6, 8, 10 or 13). Touhou 13 is the game that's making me wanna taste higher difficulties and thus try hard. Heck, it's even the only game on which I dare to practice Lunatic. How did I learn I had to 1cc ? In th11, I had to make it so that I have enough lives once I reach Okuu, and how ? By farming them in the early stages by stopping dying.
Part 2 when? UA-cam is a wasteland when it comes to actually good and informative Touhou videos (by the western fandom). This is one of the few good videos.
You can alternatively get one of them on your side by acting curious about her bullets and then when questioned explain that they are infact bullets and not suppositories -and then turn them on each other and start a rabbit genocide-
I'll just say that all difficulties are valid, go for easy mode if what you're looking for is an enjoyable experience with the games without focusing too much on the bullets if the genre aint your cup of tea Go for normal if you wanna get into the real deal but not starting with something too harsh, since it has all the basic elements of higher difficulties like micrododging, grazing, etc.
I only started playing touhou seriously on November 2021 and rn I've 1cc 10 touhou games on easy and that includes 11, 12 and 15 but I still can't beat touhou on normal but I guess I just need to put in more efforts and practice but my problem is that I don't like going through the same difficult thing everytime so that's why I don't practice touhou much on normal and the best I can make in normal would be stage 5. For eosd I managed to make it to stage 6 but lost and I was only able to do this because older touhou games allowed you pick how much lives you start so I began with 4 which is the max. I guess I suck since I don't practice much and even if do my limit which just stop me pretty early in the practice
I kind of started with Easy. My first 1cc of IN (my first game) was on Easy (after 3 attempts). I only did it to get used to controls and how the game works. Two days later I was able to 1CC both endings on normal (after about 45 attempts for FinalA and 5 additional attempts for FinalB). I think Easy only makes sense when you want to get used to the game. After at least one Normal 1CC in any of the games playing on Easy is completely useless (except Touhou 11 and 12)
I started with easy (funny enough I picked SA at first, purely by "I recognize this") on every touhou at the time then picked one (UFO, good music and the UFO mechanic wasn't the worst, I just hate curvy lasers and how fast things got) and practiced for a very long time on normal. A good year or so.I never beat any game on normal 1cc though, my mentality just degraded horribly. Too difficult, got more and more irate when I couldn't make any progress, and it stopped being fun the second I made 1ccing my goal. I can't even enjoy playing the games anymore. If there's any lesson to take away from this story, it's don't push yourself too hard and know when you're burning out. I can't play the games without going full tilt anymore. It's not worth pushing yourself that hard. I can't even get back into it with a different game. I genuinely hate that I can't enjoy the games anymore. It's not worth it. Know when to stop and/or take a break before it's too late. I used to enjoy the games even just touring them on easy 1ccs. Now I'm just horribly bitter and can't even do that.
I started with eosd and went straight to lunatic. Just banged my head against it using up all of my continues to the first stage. I noticed that I started drastically improving as soon as I "figured out" where I should be looking at while playing the game. For example, I would never get the stage 1 midboss spellcard and I though it was very hard until I figured out I should be looking up to see the bullets coming while keeping my own hitbox in my field of vision. It hit me that I shouldn't just be focusing on my character at all time and I think that's the most obvious mistake new players do
Well you got 1 fact wrong about the Extra Stage: In most games you need a 1CC on at least Normal to unlock the Stage. However, there are Touhou games where you can also unlock the Extra stage by getting a 1CC on Easy. I think this already happened in Touhou 7, 8 and 9, but defenitly in Touhou 14, 15 and 16. I know that for sure.
Going from Normal to Hard or Hard to Lunatic has pretty much the same difficulty spike. (Normal-Hard spike can be flattened if you beat a few extras, they are roughly between Normal and Hard)
Personally, I started off with easy years ago and have enjoyed the series that way since, it all depends on how serious you want to get. I pretty much got my second easy 1CC last month and now that I wanna take the games a bit more seriously I've gotten through all normal shots and have even gotten my first Hard 1CC (trying it on Touhou 6, btw)
"You can use bombs [...] which deal a lot of damage to enemies" **shows Alice's bomb** sure, nice damage Kappa A bit of a shame that this series kinda got discontinued, I could see it being super useful for new players
I personaly started on easy and in a way i am still on easy lol even tho i have beated a few extra stages, and have cleared some games on Normal, now a days i mostly go straight for normal. Also one thing you forgot to mention is that certain games allow you to unlock the extra stage by playing on easy (7,8,9?,16 are a few that come to mind)
I started with Touhou 11, and was playing on Hard because I have a silly Ego. I tried to use as many techniques as I could that I had seen in videos/replays. I was able to 1cc to stage 3 before caving to trying Touhou 16. Gonna try for Normal 1cc, this game is easier, but I don't think anyone would care if I 1cced normal or hard first anyways.
LOL Me when playing PCB for the first time (PCB was the first Touhou game I ever played and I died in the second stage after using all my bombs and lives)
The first shmup I played was Tyrian on an Android emulator, and I got exposed to Touhou through memes. I started with Touhou 10 and fell in love with it. PS: Easy mode is for children.
There has always been demand for a series like that and this is a good video and start for a series like that and I did give this video a thumbs-up. But the demand for a series like that actually being a series and not just one video which pretends to be a series is much higher. Please make Episode 2 already. I am not trying to make you feel bad. In fact, I want to motivate you to do it! I want to motivate you to make episode 2 already. I even heard in a stream that you had the video nearly finished. Don't let yourself be demotivated. Don't let yourself be let down. DO IT! JUST DO IT! MAKE OUR DREAMS COME TRUE! DOOOOOOOOOOO IT! Yes you can. You are definetly able to make a part 2. You *need* to make part 2. Do it. I am going to cheer in a livestream of yours if you do it. I am paying you to do it because you need to make our dreams come true. Do it for us, the ones with little to no experience with shoot-em ups. Do it!
my cosine is four years old kid he saw me play touhou phantsamagorie of flowerview for some mesteious reason he wanted to try the game, so I let him try and oh boy he had a blast of course it was on easy mode and he was winning he won like the first five stages I bleave I don't realy remember, that made me think that maybe phantasmagorie is good start but it might give wrong impertion on the player when they swirch to a more normal looking touhou game.
"There is no shame in playing easy mode." As someone who pays a little to much attention to fictional girls, I can deny that there is no shame. I just don't want cute rabbit girls from the moon laughing at me!
I still have yet to 1cc a Touhou game. I'm working on it, though. I want my first 1cc to be Wily Beast and Weakest Creature (Normal)... if not, then Imperishable Night (also Normal). Also, if I try to 1cc IN, is it bad for me to do it with the Ghost Team instead of the Border Team?
Picking any other team that isnt border team is completely okay, i myself use magic team because i find them the most fun. Althrough a little tip, just sticking with one character can make some bad habits, try challenging yourself by picking another character when you feel you know the main gameplay's patterns
Only issue I see with Easy is that the difficulty leap from Easy to Normal in most every game feels way big? Like, Easy is usually way too Easy compared to Normal. It feels kinda poorly balanced. I can agree with the "get the game feel"-thing though. But overall Easy always feels ultra lame.
It's been a long time since the last time I played toho. From SDM all the way up to Fairy Wars. And, please don't use easy mode. Start with Normal. I find it easier to be good at danmaku game with Normal mode. The stark jump in difficulty is much higher from Easy to Normal rather than from Normal to Extra.
Really liking this, though I would say your voice's tone maybe is a bit too serious, too dark/low, not exactly vivid. Thankfully the choice of music is appropriate and partially fix the mentionned issue.

I pretty much got my second easy 1CC last month and now that I wanna take the games a bit more seriously I've gotten through all normal shots and have even gotten my first Hard 1CC (trying it on Touhou 6, btw)
"You can use bombs [...] which deal a lot of damage to enemies" **shows Alice's bomb** sure, nice damage Kappa
A bit of a shame that this series kinda got discontinued, I could see it being super useful for new players
i think the only time i've played easy mode was in touhou 7, so that i could unlock the phantasm stage
Damn... My first 1cc was Lunatic

It’s okay to play on easy mode.
but if you ever play on easy mode in mof good luck
I personaly started on easy and in a way i am still on easy lol even tho i have beated a few extra stages, and have cleared some games on Normal, now a days i mostly go straight for normal.
Also one thing you forgot to mention is that certain games allow you to unlock the extra stage by playing on easy (7,8,9?,16 are a few that come to mind)
3 years later and still no part 2
Dammit Reisen your words hurt my pride and forced me to play on normal or harder
THanx for make this video for other beginner
I started with Touhou 11, and was playing on Hard because I have a silly Ego. I tried to use as many techniques as I could that I had seen in videos/replays. I was able to 1cc to stage 3 before caving to trying Touhou 16. Gonna try for Normal 1cc, this game is easier, but I don't think anyone would care if I 1cced normal or hard first anyways.
But in general I try for perfection a lot. So I esc+r after every death and spent an hour on stage 1 kek.
LOL Me when playing PCB for the first time (PCB was the first Touhou game I ever played and I died in the second stage after using all my bombs and lives)
tfw always wanted a video like this
Thanks you and well done Yats
tfw I can't make use of it anymore
it has been two years and there is no part 2 lol
thanks, now i understand many things especially the continue function of the game
started on easy, have two lunatic 1ccs before a year of playing
part 2?
Do it!
Good video, Yats. Will recommend this if I need to give advice to beginner players. Episode 2 will happen?
I mean I started with normal because I didn’t want to get mocked by my friends for playing easy mode
I'm fucking crying for not getting the freaking good ending...
I started Eosd on easy before finding out the game was running at 185.5 FPS
Make sure to add related (steam) on the next video for the release of touhou game on steam
**Cries in 2CC easy mode**

Nice deathbomb.
Good video Yats. Looking forward to seeing some -fresh meat- new players
えええええ、エジいモド?
Well, part 2 when ?
Im trying to figure out how to download it
There’s something familiar here...
Well. I tried both easy and normal, and I still can't play. My best so far is stage 5, but I can't win Udonge
my cosine is four years old kid he saw me play touhou phantsamagorie of flowerview for some mesteious reason he wanted to try the game, so I let him try and oh boy he had a blast of course it was on easy mode and he was winning he won like the first five stages I bleave I don't realy remember, that made me think that maybe phantasmagorie is good start but it might give wrong impertion on the player when they swirch to a more normal looking touhou game.
"There is no shame in playing easy mode."
As someone who pays a little to much attention to fictional girls, I can deny that there is no shame. I just don't want cute rabbit girls from the moon laughing at me!
I cant do normal past stege 3 at all so should i clear all the game with easy?
Episode 2 coming never?
Oml you used Ellen's theme in the background :'3
It's been a long time since the last time I played toho. From SDM all the way up to Fairy Wars. And, please don't use easy mode. Start with Normal. I find it easier to be good at danmaku game with Normal mode. The stark jump in difficulty is much higher from Easy to Normal rather than from Normal to Extra.
Really liking this, though I would say your voice's tone maybe is a bit too serious, too dark/low, not exactly vivid. Thankfully the choice of music is appropriate and partially fix the mentionned issue.
Is it crazy if I beat PoFV on a 2ccalso the song at the end is just a remix of Ellen's theme from PoFV
The eazy mode meme is there because this game is hell and we whant to drag someone else here to suffer together and the eazy modo is really eazy
Im wondering, if there will ever be a second episode.
No but I'm actually maybe kinda working on something similar
@@Yatsuzume Sounds good, I will wait
Are you planning to do a new guide?
how many stages were you able to beat when you played touhou for the first time?
It costs 15 bucks on Steam. I have a feeling that's too much
That's how much Double Dealing Character was going for on Playism, so it's not unexpected. Whether that's too high has yet to be seen.
Eeeeeehhhhh EZ modo?!
Where ep2?
My man your accent😂 As a Dutch person it hurtsss
TL;DW: mode of ease for bebi lolhaha
What game should I start on
Choose randomly from [7; 8; 10; 13; 16]
