Can you imagine how Bonzo would feel to know how so many drummers consider him the best!? When he past tragically in 80 there weren’t nearly as many of us carrying the Bonzo torch like now. I dug him right off. You guys you and George are great Terry much love from across lake Michigan keep it up!👍🏻
This is the one bonham pattern that I have the most trouble with, and this video helped a lot. Being right handed I find left-lead triplets easiest but for some reason this is very difficult for me.
I bought my first drum set today and one of my reasons for doing so is for exercise. I will find my clock and Bonham engine this winter if my heart doesn't explode. Ha ha.. Thanks for posting this. I learned a lot.
great lesson love to listen to zep and just zone in on Bonham and his magic in the songs ....im also re learning the drums so thank you teacher keep talking
I've been working on this. I am right handed when playing but write and hold a fork left handed. I think it helps being somewhat ambidextrous. I find right hand to hats left hand to bass to be the best for me. Just feels right especially when learning to add triplets and rolls, ruffs etc. into the mix. Thanks for doing this vid. Love the bottom engine handle you gave it. I couldn't figure out what to call it. Rock on man...
Love this. My instructor talks about this engine a lot. Funny enough I just caught Kashmir at 210 Live last night and then I caught this video searching on the Bonham engine. Great stuff. Rock on.
The Engine is a great name for it! It´s a great skeleton to build a solo around and yes, it is a mindbender for righthanders; at least for this one ;) Great video!
I m Italian and I don't speak English very well...but I understand you....yes ...Gods bless you ,Amico.....I re- start to play my "AMATA" DRUM....and I love bonham ...so ....thanks ....un saluto dall Italia....say bye to George, please 🙏 😊....
Another right handed drummer that finds this doesn’t come naturally. It’s fun to work on and I’m slowly getting it. It can become problematic as the tempo picks up, the left and right limbs start wanting to hit together instead of opposite each other. Good exercise too!
Terry, you hit the nail on the head for me on this one, I noticed this being a major problem I have the other day while practicing. Will definitely take your advice and try these exercises out! Love your videos keep on keepin on brotha!
Right handed drummer here. I tried it and it came easily although I have to stay focused or I'll drop out of it. Not sure what I'd use it on though... maybe just as a workout ;) Or as a discipline exercise.
I am right handed drummer and I have been working on this on and off for about 7 months. I am only just starting to get comfortable with it, so this may take some pressure off you if you are having trouble with it.
Yes terry. You hit the nail on the head with this. As a Right handed drummer it's bending my brain to play the top of the best with my left foot. This is why I've become obsessed with Bonham over the last year. I stumbled upon your show and immediately realized what the key or some of the keys to Bonham's style, was. It's the left hand lead feel. That's what's been missing in my play. Ive been playing 33 years and never even knew about any of this. Make of that what you will, but I'm so glad that I can now work on this concept and become a much more versatile and ambidextrous drummer. So ty for that not to mention the hilarious commentary to boot.
Agreed. It occurred to me a few years ago now that one of his most natural of talents was being Ambidextrous. Being right handed and automatically going to the Rack Tom with your left hand (whatever the set up) offers huge advantages. This is where i think most Right handed drummers struggle to really come to terms with. In Terry's case i think this is why he very successfully (in my humble opinion) manages to replicate Bonham's work. i.e. he naturally leads with his left when starting a fill for example. Personally i find it very difficult.
Hi There. When I started playing the drums back in the 60,s my biggest influence was Ringo Starr. I set my kit out just like him (right handed) hihat on the left ect. But being left handed and left footed I found it difficult and confusing. Someone said to me ," Why dont you set the kit out the other way round?" so I gave it a go and it all just fell into place!! So I thought that with you talking about left and right hands and feet, Why not give it a try?? You never know. Also, many thanks for all your Great Videos!!! Brian (UK)
I've been working on this. I dig it , best advice is don't over think it unfortunately I find it easier to do the right hand first also, although im lefty so opposite lol. its always a triplet feel no?
May I please have some of your drums and cymbals ? You can't take 'em with you . Thanks in advance . One of my favorite Bonham riffs . Been doing it for decades . Thanks for the post .
Terry see that you have Premier Elite kits in the background....I just purchased a Premier Elite green apple sparkle kit, also to get the kit I had to get a lone 16" silver to black fade floor tom, is that the color of the bass your playing? Do you have complete kits? think green apple sparkle is hard to find. Had to find a green to black bass drum 24" .....works in a way
So I'm a left handed drummer and yes it made doing Bonham triplets easier. But my question is while doing the engine beat. Would my left and right feet be doing the opposite as yours? I play a right handed kit left handed.
I am a left handed drummer and play the hats with my left. When I try the Bonham engine, some where along the way I revert back to hitting the snare with my left along with my left foot. Need more practice I guess....
BIG QUESTION: How does the meter change going into the triplets. You say to gradually remove the kick from the from the left hand. That leaves the triplet pattern being lead with right hand. But it looks like you're leading with your left. Do you just shift focus to left hand or skip ahead in the beat or what?
Meaning to tell you my left hand is screwed up , 3 surgeries, ripped tendon, nerve block (cut nerve ) and broken middle finger that only bends at the big knuckle so I can’t bend it all the way , I’ve adjusted to it but it’s always work lol ✌🏼
For me leading with my left isn't an issue. I can also play just fine with my left hi hat + right hand, and visa versa. The only time it's an issue is when I'm trying to do the Bonham engine. That's when my limbs want to do right with right, and left with left.
I'd advise to practice singles where you alternate your right hand with your right foot (left side doing nothing), and them your left hand with your left foot (right side doing nothing).
HI TERRY! Are you so kind to help me with the answer, how did Bonzo hold his Four Sticks in the Song the same name? Greetings from Toruń, the City Nicolaus Copernicus was born. :-))
Easy way to get stronger in your left. Just do basic things youd do with your right, with your left. Opening doors, picking up small stuff, typing. It weirdly helps
I'm a true righty. I have a lot of trouble playing lefty. What everybody is totally forgetting is that Bonham is not playing certain parts backwards. He is playing all of his triplets and what you all call his Engine Beat backwards is because HE IS A TRUE LEFTY DRUMMER. My friend Billy plays his lead guitar righty but when he plays his drums, he sets them up as a lefty would so everything he does is backwards also. Bonham is a real Left handed drummer. That's why his triplets always end up with his snare being in the wrong spot in the end of his triplets. There is no science to it. He plays Lefty on his drums but sets it up as a righty because he really is a lefty.. I hope that makes sense. Ian Paice does this triplet thing on the " Made in Japan Album" Towards the end of his solo called " THE MULE, he does these triplets with snare drum hitting like " pop-pop, pop-pop, pop-pop, pop-pop...etc.... I tried to copy it over and over and it never sounded right UNTIL.... I realized that he is a Lefty drummer also. So, the only way I could play that part in those very fast triplets was for me to keep my left hand on the snare and then go with my right hand back and forth from my snare to my 16" floor tom......ONLY THEN DID THAT PART SOUND CORRECT BECAUSE IAN PAICE IS A LEFTY DRUMMER AS BONHAM IS.. Bonham plays his drums set up as a righty but plays all of those unique parts all lefty. That's why it sounds different and is different. Honestly, I'm not going to learn all of my triplets lefty, just to play those parts backwards...Have you ever noticed that Bonham plays his quads righty? Right hand-Left hand Right Foot,Right Foot...Why is that. Because is he did, He would not be able to end up hitting his cymbal with his right hand...When Bonham is doing his fast triplets and crossing his right and left hands from his 14" tom to his 16" tom, when he comes back to his snare, he is always doing a flam backwards" LEFTY" also" Again"..... The reson that your friend Bonhamology can play the drum solo from the 1969 Royal Albert Hall so perfectly is because of 2 reasons. One because he is a Phenomenal Drummer and the other is because he has learned the proper rudiments that are needed for the last 30 years and has an amazing memory for remembering the solos in parts. I know exactly how he's doing it. If he reads this, he'll know what I'm talking about. I LOVE YOUR SHOW...
Yes, this is an easy exercise for me to do right with right and left with left. Trying to do it left with right and right with left.... will take a lot of work. Sigh...
Always happy to see a new bonzoleum video.
Can you imagine how Bonzo would feel to know how so many drummers consider him the best!? When he past tragically in 80 there weren’t nearly as many of us carrying the Bonzo torch like now. You’re teaching the essence of drumming, thank you so much Terry.
Thank you very much, J2007!
Bonzoleum is one of my favorite channels, always great videos, but this one is a special. Thank you Mr. Keating.
Excellent. Best Bonham lesson yet.
He has Helped in Immense proportions!!🤘💥💥🤘
This is the one bonham pattern that I have the most trouble with, and this video helped a lot. Being right handed I find left-lead triplets easiest but for some reason this is very difficult for me.
You remind me of my kindergarten teacher, a great charismatic joy to learn from! Thank you

Terry, buddy.
you need a couple more drums in your basement. LoL.
Love this. My instructor talks about this engine a lot. Funny enough I just caught Kashmir at 210 Live last night and then I caught this video searching on the Bonham engine. Great stuff. Rock on.
Guess who just went downstairs to practice the Bonham engine? That was informative and interesting dude! Thanks!
The Engine is a great name for it! It´s a great skeleton to build a solo around and yes, it is a mindbender for righthanders; at least for this one ;) Great video!
This is a fantastic lesson - Helped me greatly to begin to crack the code of the Bohnam 'engine' , Moby Dick 'mojo'. Fun as hell too ! try it !

Absolutely-will do Tazzin! Thank you!
Yes, yours is the best.
You kick ass Terry!!!
Thanks Terry! Ole lefty is definitely the weak piston in my Bonham engine. Looking forward to seeing you in Lancaster!
I just found your channel and it's freaking awesome!!!!! Love it!!
Great stuff Terry Thanks.

Love the channel look forward to seeing more.. and bless you from someone who remembers bonzo when he was cool...😅

This is great and entertaining too !! Right on dude
Drums sound Great

U r a machine,,, always helpful thank you
Good stuff. As always. Thanks
Nice explanation. Sounds great...
great lesson
Hey Terry, come with your band to Argentina! I'm from Argentina and I would really like that Kashmir come to my country.
Excellent! Thanks!
As a right handed player I always found it more difficult that in should be to play this lick.
Great info.rh drummer easy to lead with the left, have to get the co ordination through my SKULL!
That’s me with the Right handed lead...
Right handed drummer here. I tried it and it came easily although I have to stay focused or I'll drop out of it. Not sure what I'd use it on though... maybe just as a workout ;) Or as a discipline exercise.
Thanks for this. It helps so much!!
Love your videos. This is a terrific exercise. Would you please expand on the Bonham Engine triplet you touched on in another video?
Very informative! I have the hand feet same time problem lol! Any suggestions or on how to gain that independence?
I am right handed drummer and I have been working on this on and off for about 7 months. I am only just starting to get comfortable with it, so this may take some pressure off you if you are having trouble with it.
Thanks Benjamin-that's great advice. It takes time to burn it through your neural passageway-not to mention your muscles.
Yes terry. You hit the nail on the head with this. As a Right handed drummer it's bending my brain to play the top of the best with my left foot. @Terry Awesome Vlog as usual!
By any chance do you/Kashmir ever come to the east coast NYC area???? Would love to see u live.
Love it Terry.
Whoop youre back!
I cant seem to stop hitting my right hand and right foot at the same time. Damn! Lol
I've been working on this. I dig it , best advice is don't over think it unfortunately I find it easier to do the right hand first also, although im lefty so opposite lol. its always a triplet feel no?
You got Robert Plants bit down 😎
nice gallop......your the einstein of john's drumming
For me when I think of that 'Bonham engine' I think of how you played it at 6:00 with the rolls. Nice work!
Thank you, sensei!
May I please have some of your drums and cymbals ? You can't take 'em with you . Thanks in advance . One of my favorite Bonham riffs . Been doing it for decades . Thanks for the post .
Hi Terry, would you do a tutorial on how to play since I've been loving you.
Had to find a green to black bass drum 24" .....works in a way
If I where you, I would combine all those drums you have in that room to make a gigantic drum set.
Oh and will you & Kashmir be visiting the toledo area, by chance?
Great video.Thinking about buying a book that specializes in Bonham's drumming. Any suggestions?
So I'm a left handed drummer and yes it made doing Bonham triplets easier. But my question is while doing the engine beat. Would my left and right feet be doing the opposite as yours? I play a right handed kit left handed.
I am a left handed drummer and play the hats with my left. When I try the Bonham engine, some where along the way I revert back to hitting the snare with my left along with my left foot. Need more practice I guess....
love it.!!
The base and snare MUST alternate in order to achieve this sound which makes right hand with the hi hat at the same time an absolute must
Absolutely, Warren. It also gives the groove a chugga chugga kick in the ass, because the kick is on the upbeat. Hence, the Engine.
@@bonzoleum I practice this by doing quads with left hand lead on the tom right hand floor tom with left right hi hat bass.
Hey terry, Any idea if John favored a index or middle finger fulcrum when he played?
I'm not sure. He did do very fast single strokes french style, and I presume that would be the pointer/index.
BIG QUESTION: How does the meter change going into the triplets. You say to gradually remove the kick from the from the left hand.
That leaves the triplet pattern being lead with right hand. But it looks like you're leading with your left. Do you just shift focus to left hand or skip ahead in the beat or what?
Left foot plays 1 as it would in straight BH, but right foot moves to next triplet note.
Hey Terry, thanks for another great video...greetings P.S. Did you get the chance to order your Bonzoleum Shirts ? I´m still interested ;-)
Avaloctus yes Terry we need Bonzoleum shirts 🤘
Nathan Van Slyke and Avaloctus, absotively! I've embarrassed myself bringing this up repeatedly so thanks!
I also lead with my left. What i figured is that a left lead works with a flam intention.Thats why we lead with the left.
I'm a right handed drummer, and I only easily lead triplets with my left. Otherwise things like this, (lf rh lh rf) are really really difficult
You have to be Jack Blacks long lost brother . Join his band ,a perfect fit !
Terrific lesson. Only problem is..u make it look too easy! Keep 'em comin'!
Is that a drum fort your building?
Meaning to tell you my left hand is screwed up , 3 surgeries, ripped tendon, nerve block (cut nerve ) and broken middle finger that only bends at the big knuckle so I can’t bend it all the way , I’ve adjusted to it but it’s always work lol ✌🏼
What if you're right handed but more comfortable playing playing bass drum wit your left foot and right on Hi hats?
Still left hand with right foot and right hand with left foot.
Terry did you see where I requested you do a drum cover of don’t you forget about me by Simple Minds? That would be really cool
Ah yes I did-thank you-we'll see. I put put the covers on ice just for a bit.
Ok good deal. I enjoy your videos a lot sir god love ya. Keep them coming.

Ok good deal. I enjoy your videos a lot sir god love ya. Keep them coming.
What mics are you using on your drums?
A pair of MXL V250 condensers. One over and one about 2 feet out in front.
@@bonzoleum Nice, drums sound great
I am now officially brushing my teeth left handed ! Nice tip. You ever tried traditional grip ?
What drums are those and their sizes? (-:
It’s a later model Premier Genista 18x20, 9x12 & 14x14ft with a Yamaha Stage Custom 5.5x14 snare from the mid-2000s.

As I right-handed drummer, I definitely find it difficult. Definitely does not come naturally.
It's simple, but it ain't easy.

Would anyone else buy a bonzoleum hat? I think they would be awesome 😉
nostalgicfiend yes! I would totally pick up a Bonzoleum snapback hat!
Now if we can only like this until it reaches the top! 😂
A lot of what your playing sounds like what Bonham did on Four Sticks
Exactly!
I'm right handed, but I am more comfortable starting with my left...
for me double kick drum is a no...a strong rapid kick is the key to Bonhams style
im telling you check out Greta Van Fleet! you wont be disappointed. thanks for the drum vid!
this looks like "groove drumin" you tube
I live for moments like 01:00! lol
Thanks, Thor!
