GOT7 would be a mainstay in the K-pop industry ever since their debut in early 2014. From 2014 until their departure from JYP in January 19th, 2021, GOT7 would be one of the groups that launched JYP Entertainment to new heights.
Yet, when the late 2010s rolled around, JYP would create a slew of new groups. GOT7 would be lost in the shuffle. By the beginning of 2020, iGOT7s (or Ahgases - GOT7 fans) would speculate that GOT7 would soon leave JYP. The group was in danger of being swallowed by the “7 year curse.”
And just a year later in January 2021, that speculation would become reality, as the 7 year curse would strike again. The members would not renew their contracts, all leave JYP, and go on their own solo paths.
Let’s break down how it came down to this and what the member’s future is post-JYP.

As for GOT7 itself, what's your take on their departure from JYP Entertainment and their solo careers?
For some reason I can see us getting a GOT7 comeback sometime soon. I just feel it, I'm actually really hoping because not GOT7 in kpop just dosent feel right 😭😭
I hope so too, because if we're looking at K-pop history, it doesn't look good for groups that break up. If GOT7 did a couple comebacks, it would actually be big, because it would show that a group that left their former label can still thrive.
It's crazy to me how quickly fans jump into the next new group leaving older groups to decline.
Most of my favourite artists are the ones that have been around for a few years.
Then there's BoA who has been around for a just a bit longer. 😍
Definitely, it's always the new flavor of the month or year with K-pop fans. I do think the older or more loyal K-pop fans tend to stick with their favorite artists, like BoA 😄
“This year, there will be a restructuring of the K-pop market.” The music industry officials we met at the end of the year and the beginning of the year gathered in this way. The public opinion is that the market has grown in the midst of the K-pop sensation led by the group BTS and Black Pink, but the phenomenon of the rich and the poor has rather accelerated. ◇ GOT7, Gugudan, dismantling
On the 11th, JYP Entertainment officially announced that the contract with the boy group GOT7 has expired. Although it was not expressed as “dismantlement,” it can be said that it is in fact the procedure for dismantling because it is impossible to operate as GOT7 without the permission or consent of JYP, which has the trademark right of “GOT7”.
GOT7 is a top-notch group with over 450,000 copies of the album “DYE” released last year (based on Gaon Chart). Even if the price per sheet is set at 15,000 won, the sales of one album is close to 7 billion won. However, the renewal of the contract between JYP and GOT7 was missed. The industry believes that GOT7 has not exceeded the '7 year jinx'. Each member's interests are different, and because it is a group of multinational members such as Korea, the United States, Taiwan, and Thailand, the scope of individual activities is wide. It is very likely that the company could not accommodate all of their individual needs.
Six months ago, the girl group Gugudan officially disbanded. Mnet's'Produce 101' was a girl group Iowa member Sejeong and Mina, which attracted attention as a group, but they ended their group activities 4 years after their debut. The girl group AOA, which started as a group of eight during their debut, has only three members left as the exclusive contract for one member expires earlier this year. AOA is also dominated by the view that group activities are no longer possible.
A representative of a mid-sized music company said, “Of course, a group with a high popularity demands a larger share of profits at the time of renewal. This year is the 7th year of their debut, and there are many groups whose renewal is coming. SM's Red Velvet, YG's Winner, Mamamoo, Lovelyz, and LABOUM. Since there are many so-called “A-class” groups that have secured a large fandom, it is expected that the music industry will suffer considerable pain over the renewal of the contract and the group's survival this year. Even if the group form is maintained, the meaning of the group will inevitably fade when several members leave the agency and start individual activities. ◇ Can an online concert really be an alternative?
The biggest reason for a music agency to abandon the group is poor profitability. Even if some of the members get caught up in unpleasant affairs and go to rumors, a solid fandom is maintained, so of course, if it is so-called “money,” they will naturally maintain the group. However, last year's Corona 19 incident caused a huge blow by shutting down the performance market, which was an absolute part of the K-pop group's sales. To overcome the Corona 19 crisis, the music market pulled out an online untouch concert card. After BTS' ‘Bangbangkon’ gathered more than 750,000 online audiences, music companies eagerly built an online performance system and actually conducted it. Each of them distributed press releases containing their achievements, but this was only an alternative to offline concerts, and sales decline was inevitable.
Ticket prices for online performances are around 20-30% of offline performances. Of course, it has the advantage of accommodating more audiences at once, but in the case of offline performances, considering that the sales of goods are enormous in the field, sales are bound to decrease.
Kang Tae-gyu, a popular music critic, said, “In fact, there are a lot of groups that are for sale in the current music industry.” It is to be released, but the capitalists are not willing to move forward, so they choose to dismantle. The K-pop market that has lasted the past year is currently facing the worst situation.”

The boy group's strength stands out in the album sales volume, which is a basic sample of fandom.

Its surprising to me ppl are surprised with got7 "departure". Its typical for kpop idol to leave once their contract is over. They are idol not artist. Idol have short life time in kpop scene. Once they reach the peak the hype will be over and it will be hard to them to keep the momentum. However, got7 still got strong sale. I believe its just musical direction difference between the group and management. Idol group typically groomed to be what the management want and they cant choose to their image and genre they want to sing. So, once the contract is over they will just go do their prefered style they want to pursue earlier before their debut as an idol. Now, as an actual artist or actor whatever they want rather than what the management want. They already popular right now and have got fan over the individual in the group. So, just look out for their solo debut now. Whether they success or not depend on their artistic sense than management push now. And i dont think they will regroup as got7 back too bcoz the "got7" brand name is under jyp and all the song is copyright under jyp too. If they want to regroup back they will go to same label not different label but under the new name and new song. The chance look really slim now. Just be happy they got to do what they want to do now under different label and genre they want to pursue now or whatever career they do after this.

Their departure was necessary, since they all make songs they need more freedom to do their own music, so we feel happy for that reason, but bc all went to different agencies we knew will be harder to make a comeback and way harder to tour as 7 members. Still happy to see they got their needed freedom
I kept going back to JYP, whether the company or the person, allowing GOT7 to keep their name. They could very well be as petty as SM and keep the name so they can allow it to rot in the basement. What do you think that is about? Perhaps a form of graciousness, despite all the drama?
I want to see jyp from a business point of view.
Usually k pop idol groups promote the company as a girl group and make money as a boy group. Of course, girl groups also make money.
