  • JYP and PSY are creating a new music reality show called Loud. While Loud sounds like yet, another show, it has a twist. Namely, the show wants to promote artistic values and put K-pop in the backseat.
    Loud aims to debut 2 male bands under P Nation (PSY) and JYP Entertainment. The show will ask if artistic skills, such as writing lyrics, music composition, and vocals can overcome the K-pop standards of hot looks, slick choreography, and having the K-pop sound.
    Can Loud's band concept catch on in Korea and internationally? Let's find out!

    Some of my favorite Kpop songs are b-sides with no choreography, so this concept is interesting. I'm looking forward to the show.

      Same! I want to see if idol groups can thrive on pure artistic and musical talent, much like B-side songs.

    I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The only reason idol kpop is so big is because of the fandom subculture and it’s emphasis on things like dance, visuals, and simple lyrics. Take that away, the language and cultural barrier is too strong, People would rather listen to frankly more artistic centered music in their own language and similar cultures.

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  3 роки тому +9

      Agreed 100% and you bring a really strong point. Only because of K-pop's emphasis on dance, visuals, and simple lyrics are the big reasons why it caught on overseas. K-pop is very Westernized and to most countries, that's type of sound is what they're used to and accepted.
      But once you go outside that poppy standard and advance past that, that language and culture barrier is simply too strong. Unless a radical movement happened, like Korean becoming one of the world languages like how English is, Korean music such as trot, indie, and ballads will have an extremely hard time catching on.

      authenticity, even a little bit still helps. people still can express themselves through their music, you are are right with your take too. but not all groups are the same.

    Idols have been trying to push their artistic integrity first for many years but the companies always focus on idols who sell the most despite its artistic merit. 🙃 We can find these examples in JYP alone. 🍵

      Definitely, while JYP does have some controversy among K-pop fans for how he handles his boy groups, I do like him overall. He's often trying to push new concepts in music.

    Interesting points. Here's my thoughts:
    1. While you are right that the K-pop fans that wants to move out from the stereotypes is a minority, it is still significant enough that Korean music can be accessible on Spotify beyond K-pop. Also, Diablo, a Korean metal band has significant English comments in their music videos, especially from metalheads who find them just as hardcore as the western counterparts.
    2. If JYP wants to be real wild with this idea, they should contact Ichikara Inc. to set up a joint venture to make Nijisanji KR singers under their wing. That will make K-pop fans and Virtual UA-camr fans go wild.
    3. I hope that the end result isn't Korean counterparts of Westlife or One Direction. That would be a big turn off for domestic and international fans.

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  3 роки тому

      Here's my responses:
      1. I do think there can be a decent niche for Korean metal and rock bands overseas. Like you said, Diablo has some metalhead fans that are hardcore. The problem is going overseas for non-K-pop (and some hip-hop groups) is usually unprofitable. The only profitable ventures overseas are K-pop groups.
      2. I can see JYP possibly doing that, as he's bee known to think outside the box and experiment often.
      3. Yeah, I wouldn't like to see these groups turn into those groups as well.

    Is a very risky show, But if this succeed, they are gonna became your typical western style industry, Similar to what happened to Japan some decades ago after the 1st Idol wave that lasted about 40 years died down. I guess this is a natural process tho... And even if that doesn't happen now, is gonna during this century.

      I see what you mean. I'm hoping "Loud" could work, since I want to see more artistic talent in K-pop.
      If we see more artistic talent, I think indie music, hip-hop, funk, and other genres in Korean music will be listened to more.

    Just found this video, so I'm wondering: What are your current thoughts on the show and the participants?
    Personally I've been really enjoying the show and all those boys are truly talented and quite diverse, too. The few songs they produced by themselves on the show so far also are all bops in my opinion, so when this is what they're capable of pre-debut (and at such young age), I can't wait to see what they'll put out in the future once they debuted.
    I have some favorites, but I'm honestly totally okay with whoever gets to debut because they all deserve it, all I want is that Jyp and Psy give them all the artistic freedom they want and deserve, since that is kinda the whole point of the show

    Your take was very interesting. I live in the US. Where can I watch “Loud?” Do you think it will end up on Viki eventually? While I’m also into the traditional male Kpop groups, I do agree that to be successful these days in the Kpop world it depends on your management agency and how good your social media is....talent is way down the road....1the9 and Lim Jimin as a solo artist are every bit as good as the top groups, but just didn’t have the force behind them. And, it seems like 50% of every young Korean male/female is a trainee.

    • @Popsori

      bit.ly/2T57bMs
      You're right that with K-pop groups, it really does depend on your management agency and how good your marketing -- aka social media -- is. Talent is way down the list in what makes a group successful.
      Like you said, you'll see underrated groups and soloists and think "why wasn't this singer/group more popular," but didn't either have the marketing, management, or wasn't idol K-pop enough.

    People downplay the importance of looks. Korea as a whole put so much emphasis on visuals with all those cosmetic surgery ads. Whats worse is that idols who are "ugly" get roasted by knetz.

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  3 роки тому

      Agreed 100%, looks are so emphasized in K-pop, especially by some K-netz. Korea is a very appearance-based society, especially in entertainment.
      I know with foreign fans, they value looks too. But even if an idol isn't the best looking, international K-pop fans usually won't be mean about their appearance.

    Loud is just hype & PR to bring in more anti-KPOP & new KPOP fans, but the Boy Groups will still be KPOP bcz they have to succeed domestically to be accepted internationally. Most of the International fans have FOMO. Korean fans feel a sense of national pride in supporting their Korean government-funded KPOP groups, as though America will envy/acknowledge their KPOP groups if they nearly-imitated & replicated American artists/tastes but with Korean eyes. So they support groups that they think Americans will love or suit American tastes. Koreans just dont want to be insulted with accusations of being uncultured & backward. Surrounded by developing, poorer South East Asian countries, they know only too well how insulting "ugly looks & no dance talent" comments can be. LOUD can call itself anti-looks, anti-dance, anti-KPOP, but will they really want to miss out on CFs, drama/movie appearances & concerts in a dance-obsessed South East Asia? If not at first, the group's young members will slowly be trained to dance for their later songs. Viewers will just see more personal stories, drama & unique performances of these young, talented boys, for free. There seems to be some level of trust in Korea, bcz Americans have been through issues of exploiting the young for profit with Jackson 5, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, etc.

      Better than nothing. However, it's still arguably having the image of lightsticks and associating with JYP. Meaning international K-pop fans will support them as a rock band. Only a few tried to push for their success as a rock band and not part of the K-pop scene.
      Face it for native Koreans, they don't take the material seriously until Westerners like you do. They take more pride to indie groups and hip hop acts, or more recently trot. Like K-pop, trot is totally Korean as well.
