  • Dr. Lawrence Scahill, a Yale School of Medicine professor and psychopharmacology expert, discusses the best treatments for tic disorders like Tourette's. Medications can be very effective, he says, but new behavioral interventions like habit reversal therapy (HRT) are also producing surprising results.

Just try holding them in. It may hurt, it took me a good year before I could start holding them in without it hurting, and now I am normal, I dont feel the need to tick every damn second. I'll tell you, it's the best damn feeling ever getting away from ticks. Just work hard on trying to forget about them, and it truly pays off.

No chance in my case. My tourette mixes itself with compulsive thoughts like fights, supernatural thoughts, or just sentences. And within tenths of a second my jaw starts biting itself together. Even my head moves towards another direction. I have tried every consciuos movement: I even blew up my cheeks. But then I felt a force like a boxer moving it up again and once it was opening my mouth: BOOM! The jaw bites itself together.

reading to all this comments of all of you people, first of all i wish you all somehow to become calm and to get well, what i am trying to say is that i got my tics or tourette or both when i was 11y old i guess, and at first there were blinkings, then it started by head movements, then some sounds like short sounds and singing etc..by the age of 15y i think i got my self to point i was thinking of suicide, at that point in my life, i started crying a lot at nights..then 1 day i decided to not go to sleep and to focus on my ticks and movements in the silent hours of the nigh sitting on the edge of bed, for at least couple days, then couple months..and then i continued to do so daily in school, thinking of not doing them and while being out with friends, just focus on inner movements...and finaly it helped, i almost got rid of every tic, except eye movement sometimes and head movement sometimes, but if i dont want to, i could not do any of it for as long i want! today im 43y old, and sometimes im so calm, and resless its insane and so peaceful. I wish you could all feel the same, love you all, stay safe.

I'm doing my research before my neuro appt on 1/30 and your video has helped me so much. I believe I may have had a grandfather and/or great uncles with tourettes and either they died accidentally trying to self medicate or they killed themselves. Try smoking cannabis... one higher in a compound called CBD. Really try this if you can. Even a little can help a lot and all the other medications have far greater risk of addiction or harm in every way. I hope you see this (best to get a medical card and try the strain Harlequin).

+Danielle Pate Hi, I would like to hear from you how has this helped your life since a little time has passed now?
I am a fellow Tourette's Syndrome person. The reason I am writing is that I disagree with some of this video's host's opinions. If there are such tics as shoulder jugs that don't do any harm to you, there is no need to try to prevent or cure them but to let others surrounding you and yourself think that it is a part of you and it's all right. People still think that you are a good person even with tourette's syndrome. Tourettes can and does affect your life so much that you have to agree that tourette's syndrome is a part of you and you can not cure it. You live with it as you have lived with it so far. And you have to accept the symptoms and feel the acceptance of everyone surrounding you in order for you to be yourself: a person that has tourette's syndrome.
Occasionally you might not have tics but they come back. As they have come back to you all your life this far.
So what you need to do is step one. And I have to remind everyone reading this that even I am not farther than step one and maybe will never be. Step one is to recognize the tics that do harm to your body. For example grinding your teeth together harms your teeth. Whenever they come, just try to do something else, eat chewing gum or just focus on your breahing. And you will start to think something else and forget the breathing but it's ok. Just when you notice your mind is going somewhere else, grab it and bring it back to concentrate on your breathing. Then you don't grind your teeth. And it is much better way to focus on your breath and help your teeth not to damage. Time will show you how it will effect. This is a good way of therapy, i think. And when a tic causes pain you have to do that again: replace it with something else painless.
But if a tic is not harmful, I don't see the point not to let yourself tic. This is a syndrome that is part of you and there is no cure. Everyone will accept your tics because they know that it is just your thing and they love you whatsoever. Releasing all the tics later in some kind of eruptions is sometimes overwhelming and too much to handle. And also if you need to focus not to tic when companied by other people, you can't really live 100% in the situation as yourself but you have to hide a part of yourself and that is not a good thing for your self competence.
Just a few things I got in my mind based on this video. :)

Cannabis can also help with emotional distress caused by tics, while medicine simply suppresses tics. I respect this man and harbor no ill feelings... but I don't see how many people with Tourettes are okay with the whole redirection therapy thing.
My mom had been trying to teach me that all my teenage years and still at 22 I accidentally slip into that mindset when I'm around people. It's mentally stressful to redirect, to me it's the same as suppressing.
I view it as "Torturing myself in a large quantity right now, to try to prevent the smaller tortures throughout the day" because yes it could help me prevent my tics in the future, it also it's extremely taxing on me physically, mentally, and in a lot of cases emotionally.
Again I mean no disrespect but I'm not sure how to understand this way of thinking. I also have Autism and find it hard to put myself into other ways of thinking sometimes and if anyone would like to try to help me understand this please feel welcomed to, but also don't feel obligated to of course

I’d be that your last paragraph explains why you may not get it. I have Tourette’s, I’m not autistic, and honestly don’t see a problem. Redirection is a technically correct way to put it. Dunno why you think of “torturing oneself” cos I never had that pop up once in my mind lol. It’s honestly not worth really thinking too much about. Plus, it helps foster neural circuits that are more useful in the long run.

Got to fight the urge.. it's the only way for me to stop the tic. Be aware like he said.. unfortunately I always get a different tic a month or so later or the same tic will re surface. But it helps for a while.. right now I've got like 5 different tics. I'm actively focusing on stopping giving in to the urge because if I let it get bad that's when I can't control when it happens, I just subconsciously do it without thinking or even noticing I'm doing it... that's the only advice I can give. But I wish I didn't have this at all.. I'm 36 and had it since I was 5

I think this tension will always come and you'll have to release it somehow. I had some embarassing tics at the age of 11 and later tried to fight the urge. It worked in the sense that those particular tics stopped. Im now left with some minor tics which I blend in with natural body movement. It rarely happens that people notice something is off and even then it's so minor they don't mind. I've noticed practising technical sport helps too, maybe because it keeps the mind busy.

Love that for you man. My fiance is the same, she has Bipolar 2, ADHD, and OCD while I have Tourettes, OCD, and Autism
I've experienced all of those tics as well, I'm 22 but have had tics since like 11 I'm pretty sure(memory is pretty shoddy) I've also had ones where I yelled, more like just loud sounds like big exhales combined with my vocal chords wanting to make a "hoo" sound
I remember the first day meeting my fiance, it was through online dating. I had resorted to it because it's pretty hard to meet people that are accepting in real life and it's a lot easier to know if someone is understanding and accepting if you tell them "I have Autism, OCD, and Tourettes" through text before meeting in person... if they still wanna meet that's a good sign, if they don't then they're not even worth your frustrations ya know?
I had told her and she said her twin brother has autism and she understands what it's like to communicate with autistic people and she thinks of us as equal and what not. She was kinda surprised by the tics I think but she wasn't ever rude or judgemental but it's understandable that someone would be surprised by having a constant skipping record/sound machine, ya know?
It's always really good to have that one person you can share your life with that's not ashamed to have you with them. My fiance would never be embarrassed by my tics in public, I've had tic attacks in stores and she just held my arm tight and stared at anyone who stared at me lol
If she waits for your mini tic attacks to finish in the middle of you trying to speak or rant about something then she's a keeper man
I can't tell you how many times a conversation has gone:
"Yea and I was" *starts bobbing my head to the right in a slow speed repeatedly to the right while winking one eye*
"Uh *repeats the aforementioned tic pattern"
      "Uh" *repeats*, the uh *repeats*
"fuck what was I saying" *I say with my right cheek so high my right eye is closed
And she just waited patiently lol
I'm happy for you man. I'm glad to hear it.

Have you tried to change your diet? I have food allergies and sensitivities and have had twitching as a cause of it, i think diet is the way to curing this condition. I'm not gonna call out any foods but try to stay away from the most common foods people are allergic to for a couple weeks or so to see if you notice any change. My recommendation is to eat only meats and salad and just salt and garlic as spice. Try to stay away from chicken and eggs at least in the beginning i react to these but then im allergic to antibiotics and believe thats why. Take note it can take a long time for your body to get rid of some allergens so the longer you go on this test the more certain you get but you should start feeling a difference quick. Its basically called a elimination diet if you want to read up on it.

Many illnesses are a cause of not just one thing but many in combination. And just to give you a wider perspective of what food is and can do to your brain, LSD is a fungus/mold who grows on a grain our food isnt just the compounds of what they are but also the compounds of all the contaminations surrounding it both natural accruing and due to how the food is processed so please, to say im pushing people down rabbit holes by suggesting diet to be looked into thats a far stretch.
