- CBS News lead national correspondent David Begnaud, who has been open about living with Tourette syndrome, meets Callum DeQuevedo, a 17-year-old living with an extreme case of Tourette's. CBS News cameras were the first to ever film a Tourette's patient undergoing a type of brain surgery aimed at relieving DeQuevedo's tics and improving his quality of life.

I just stopped the video and cried so hard when he said he considered suicide. His concern is real. He’s not being dramatic. His suffering is real. His parents are strong. He will get better. I still can’t stop crying.

Same here. It's OK now as an adult but as a child it was horrible.
same here, it was really bad when I was little.. I had to get an MRI when I was 5 because they thought I was having epilepsy

The fact that something in the human body can malfunction in a way that it makes someone uncontrollably punch themselves in the face/poke their eye is just mind boggling to me. So glad this young man has finally gotten some relief.
It’s very fascinating. Imagine in a machine if one wire goes wrong, what could happen?
it is a nerve malfunction in the brain system, so the surgery suppresses the trigger
When you are falling asleep and you get that hypnotic twitch where you jolt awake is something to get an idea of involuntary movements
@@mattg4836 It's not quite like that, though, it's not like a spasm. It feels more like an urge, like an itch, and it only gets more intense until you tic. I'm lucky enough to only have a very mild case of tourettes, I can control it well enough that nobody knows I have it. It can be hard at times, even still.
@@jimbojimson I have eczema and get itches that stop me on my tracks and I can't stop myself from scratching till I'm bleeding. More like that?
I’ve had this brain surgery for Essential Tremor. I avoided jt for years but there’s nothing to fear. It is truly life changing.

@@MelissaR784 yes, but only approved for certain things like Parkinsons, Essential Tremor and chronic back pain so far. Trials are going very well for things like treatment resistant depression, OCD and traumatic brain injuries (my cousin is part of that last trial and the change in him has been incredible). It’s called Deep Brain Stimulation and it’s really a life changer. My description of how I feel is very much like Callum’s, it’s a feeling of being comfortable in my body that I never knew existed. My condition has some similarities with Tourettes so when I stopped having to tense up to control simple things like getting a fork to my mouth or typing I noticed I have a lot of cramping from living with a lifelong movement disorder.
JBrook, I knew about deep brain stimulation and other conditions,but not back pain.
What specific spinal issues does it help with?

But I have such tremendous admiration for your son. He’s such a strong young man!! The surgery alone had to be so tough to go through, it was probably nothing for him considering what he went through before the surgery. Anyway, great work to all of you 😊❤
The Mt Siani West Neuromodulation team are rock stars. Dr Lubarr at Hackensack Meridian was responsible for the Tourette's diagnosis, a path forward, and connecting us with the amazing team involved with the surgery. Without her, none of this would have happened.

@Passchen -Fail Thank you. Here is an update for you for replying. Since the device was turned on, he is back to his job at the local Hollister. Side note, he is one of two people with Tourrete's at this store. They worked with him through all this and were very understanding. Huge thanks to his manager, Carly.
He is not home yet from work tonight because he is out with friends. Everyone here is very, very OK with that.
To be clear, this is not a cure. It helps with the tics. Tics are just the tip of the iceberg with Tourette's most of the time. Cal had a plan for his future before all this happened. With the surgery, that future is back on track.
So very happy for Callum and your family also, I can't imagine what he went through looks so awful and unbearable, bless him so happy he's doing better !

“His parents’ persistence to…get the insurance company on board.” A sentence on a story like this that would only ever need to be included in the corporate oligarchy known as the United States.
yup... even some of the most necessary, life-saving procedures are shrugged off by health insurance companies. it's getting to be out of hand, especially with inflation.
I feel for this young man. I was diagnosed at 24 years old. Mine makes life difficult, but it has never been on this scale. Good luck young man! Go enjoy your well deserved future!
70% reduction, and they said that it can still improve more over time, if I'm correct; remarkable! He looked so relaxed and... normal, if you will, when he was talking with the interviewer.
Good I really hope it keeps getting better and better.
What s blessing this treatment will be. My youngest child developed tics and OCD around age 10. Thankfully, his tics snd repetitive behaviors weren’t as serious a Callum’s. He’s in his 30s now. Still struggles with some OCD behaviors but he outgrew the tics.

One of my best friends I've known since I was 6 years old has Touretts. His is a mild/medium, or as he calls it medium/rare, involvement. With time and medication he's been able to lead a very fruitful life. He's my inspiration.
All of my love, Callum. I have mild TS as an adult, but it was really bad in elementary & middle school for me. My mom had to take me to the ER more than once for my neck jerking, my neck hurt so much. Took me so they could give me muscle relaxers. Knocked me out but I got relief.
My brother had it during those yrs. I remember him jerking so bad I thought his head. And neck would become detached.
Did you ever try the medication called Orap? It really helped my daughter.
Glad you got relief. Also when you say "mild", I'm hoping it has died down to a much less intense degree.

This young man is so brave! It's wonderful he has such loving and supportive and determined parents. I'm so happy for them that the stimulator is helping give him his life back.
The amount of schooling, and training those brain surgeons went through to confidently do a successful surgery like that is also impressive.
Crying…. I hope in my lifetime I can get this treatment even though my tics are not nearly as severe

An amazing story about brilliant doctors and scientists working together to bring care and healing to those who are in need. The one negative thing in this story that stands out here, and in SO many situations like this is, "Getting the insurance company on board". How did critical decisions about our lives become the playground of investment firms, because that is what health insurance company's are. When were they granted this power over our doctors care? I am so glad that this young man's mother worked so hard to make this family's insurance company do the right thing, but think of the hundreds of thousands of Americans whose story does not have such a happy ending. There's a story there. ♡♡♡♡♡
I was about the comment this aswel. Kinda sad thinking that there is a solution, but now insurance companies are gonna get in the mix.
When? I thought always - like since the dawn of health insurances! Everything is a struggle, a fight, they wear you down, they ignore you, don’t co-operate or communicate with physicians or the billing departments, create hoops to jump through, red tape, denials, approvals in part but not in full, fine print, contradictions in policies, & outright LIE to you. With teens (older children) covered under a parents health insurance, I’ve seen health insurance companies attempt to stall until the child ages out & is no longer covered. I’ve experienced health insurance company that ONLY continued coverage up to age 24 if the child (young adult) was enrolled as a Full Time College Student.
The last few years - I thought since many insurance companies were now having to comply with all these new Transgender enforcements - I thought that might facilitate or & improve things for everyone else too - but Not so.
@@laulio7823 I know. Sadly, "Health" insurance is NOT here for our health and is just a money making racket. It hasn't always existed and I think it would be a good thing to look into it's beginnings, management and EXTREME profits.

My son has tourettes . Though he has issues, he no longer tics and has a normal, full, life. I know how he and his parents have suffered. I pray 🙏 for them and know they will prevail. I have friend who has mild Tourette’s, he was diagnosed right away.

I’m 25 and I have had moderately strong Tourette’s syndrome for a long time, so this hits pretty darn close to home. I think I speak for a lot of the TS community when I say Callum’s journey is an inspiration to all of us. Major kudos to the entire team for making this extraordinary progress come true for him. This is amazing. This should be an option for people with severe tourettes and insurance should totally cover it.
I worked at Waisman Center in Madison, WI and I saw a few cases of Tourette syndrome. The outcome of this surgery could help a lot of people.

I went through this surgery to treat my Dystonia. I avoided it for a while because it scared me but eventually I decided to do it. All went so smooth and now I’m great. Happy to hear he’s doing well.

Being exposed to the health/physical challenges of so many other people continually reminds me to appreciate the minor issues I face.
Tourette's can be so invasive in even young people's lives, challenging their long term futures.
He's very brave to allow the surgery, but the potential for finding some improvement in his ability to live.
Science is so cool. Whenever I see or hear of severe cases of medical issues like this I always think of our poor ancestors who had to deal with this in the past and the folks around the world who might have the same issue but no access to medical care for it. All suffering with no relief.

All of the progress in research and success in TS should be attributed to parents who advocate hard for their kids. I can’t stress that enough. Because no one seems to care about Tourette’s nor understands it in the medical world.
Well said I am going 32 now my tics only show when im stressed rather when i was young and nobody knew what TS was and just labeled it as "severe mannerisms" here is south east asia. The worst part is my when my parents (when i was little) were asking me to just stop it not knowing i physically and mentally can't stop it.
It is cases such as these why I aspire to become a practicing physician. Callum, stay strong!

This is so wonderful! My heart really goes out to him and his family for having to deal with tics. My daughter had them for several years as a teenager, but eventually outgrew them by 95% or more which I will be forever thankful, but I know how devastating they can be. Hers seemed to be linked to ADHD According to her neurologist.

Yeah this is an amazing story. This is a known procedure used for various different conditions. It has not been approved for this condition yet because most of the time tics are manageable with other modalities. But clearly in cases like this it's necessary to start trying things. Unfortunately like the video said the insurance company is the real stopping point. Doctors with the best of intentions have their hands tied by uncooperative insurance companies 😔 The downstream effects of grady insurance companies makes the job way more difficult and morally injurious.

Wow! That is awesome for him. My daughter started experiencing tics during the pandemic, at the age of 13. She never had them prior. Hmmm. They have gotten significantly less acute and frequent, but it was very concerning.
