Genuinely think this makes perfect sense. I travel a lot for work, so I often do this in new towns and cities.
I wasn't aware this was considered weird. I did this a number of times to time myself because I didn't want to be late to my appointment. Also, I have horrible spatial awareness and can get very easily lost, so I need to know my route beforehand just so I don't freakout

Definitely do this for job interviews and the like.
It's definitely not common, but I wouldn't consider it weird, especially if you know about yourself that you have horrible spatial awareness.

I've done this for important journeys that are close.
If it's a farther journey that would prohibit a prior practice journey I'll try to make sure there are large enough gaps between each stage of my journey to get completely lost and find myself again.
It's quite simple, making the journey beforehand gives you lots of information. How long it takes, what turns to take, what conditions to expect, where you can park etc... Makes perfect sense and I've done this before so as not to be late for an important appointment as it puts you at ease as you know the route. It's always much easier to drive a route that you know than drive a route you don't know. I'm surprised they didn't come to the conclusion it was true much earlier as I thought it true as soon as she read it!
I wouldn't say I go to the extent of every journey like SC but important ones, sure. Also, Google maps helps quite a lot these days and makes new routes much easier as you can see them on street view.

I am thinking many of us have done this for something important like a job interview or first day at work. Know the route, traffic, parking etc.
Exactly. I think that I've done this for about 90% of the interviews I've attended. Especially if it's in an unfamiliar city or downtown, when I have to determine where I might park.
There are many of us who have wished we would have done this. I’ve had terrible journeys before where I thought it would be straightforward and somehow ended up messing up. Definitely would have helped me in the past!

We call this "doing a dummy run". Doesn't have to be the day before but it's useful for gauging times for the trip, finding out about details google maps doesn't show you etc
A few years back, Susan had an excellent radio series called "Keep Calman Carry On" in which her mildly famous friends would get her to engage in activities to distract her from constant worrying.
Andy Zaltzman took her to a cricket match; Muriel Gray took her hill walking; and Phill Jupitus took her to an art gallery. But the best episode was John Finnemore taking Susan on a short holiday where he did absolutely no planning and freewheeled his way through everything.
He arranged to meet her at the train station, asked a random stranger what city they should visit and then put out a call on social media to ask for suggestions about what to do when they arrived. Susan fretted a lot to begin with, but by the end of the show she acknowledged that John's approach did have some benefits.

I have done this for interviews.
If it’s a place I’ve never been I definitely do this. If it’s a distance I get there the night before and check it out
I do this too Susan, sometimes i have very anxious periods in my life where i just need to get rid of as much stress as possible or i'm a wreck at the worst possible times. It helps if you can eliminate as many surprises as possible (such as where to park, where to get on/off a bus etc).
If I had time sufficient I would definitely do this - it was obviously true and really not as unusual as they made it out to be.
I used to do this before I relied on GPS and stuff. And in my 20s when I had lots of time for myself
I used to do it a lot before google maps to see what the parking situation is like
Years ago, my wife and I decided it was time to go to Scotland. We planned to fly into Glasgow, rent a car, and take off for the Highlands. This was going to be my first experience driving on the ‘wrong’ side of the road. First I went on the internet and read the rules of the road in the UK. Then I got on Google Maps and learned how to get out of the airport on the road to Loch Lomond. I also practiced approaches to Cal-Mac ferry terminals, and exits from the terminals. I navigated many a roundabout. It helped. It actually helped. Almost three weeks of driving on mostly single track roads without incident.

Was gonna say haha, I literally did this for a job interview recently. Over-abundance of caution saw me take a drive to the office the day before and timing how long it wuld take me
I usually make a virtual journey beforehand, using an online map with both a satellite view and street views, and noting landmarks along the way, especially where turns must be made.
As below, I am far less nervous driving somewhere I have been before if it means back roads and making a number of changes of direction. I am aware that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west but not many roads are a straight shot. Heck, I can get turned around in a mall. I walk out of a store and don’t remember which direction I was walking before going into a store. Learning that, you will understand why I would like to make a journey the day before the appointment or meeting or whatever. Have you ever heard of nervous perspiration? In my case it’s not so delicate … sweat is even too inadequate a word. 😅. You might understand better when I tell you that Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. Is north of the city of Windsor, Ontario, Canada which is near where I live. 🤔
You have to know where the right bus stop is ... especially if you can't see the attraction from the bus stop (Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry comes to mind)
oh come on it is pretty weird. Most people nervous about being late just give themselves extra time and get there earlier or plan better, they don't spend time the day before going places. I don't get why people in the comments are acting like this makes total sense. It's not completely unreasonable, but I'd say it's pretty unusual.
Yeah, I give myself extra time - to the point where I'm nearly always 20-40 minutes early - for important things. I totally get that. But why the day before? If I've got that extra time, I'll just leave early on the day of the appointment, not have a pointless trip the day before 😅

I often use google street view to check out unfamiliar routes, particularly on small country lanes. Don't think I would ever go in person, though it makes sense if you are anxious and want to make sure you get somewhere on time.
I’ve done this! But a good solution these days if you don’t have much time to drive there is to do the journey on Google Earth street view. I’ve used it before hospital appointments and things like that.

Not for everything, but yeah job interviews in an ùnfamiliar place. You need to know how long it will take so you won't be late.

I just did this yesterday... I went on ~1 hr journey (2 hr round trip) as a test.
ive done this the odd times when starting a job. maybe not the day before, depends when i get offered it to when it starts just so you dont end up being late because you dont know where it is as i drive everywhere. i wouldn't do it for social reasons as thats just pointless

I do the same thing if it's just around town. Probably if it were in surrounding towns, too but I don't drive. It's a bit easier with street view apps but really, I want to have a familiar view when I get off the bus, know when to pull the bell to get off the bus etc. Rather than asking where I get off the bus, tell me what the stop is BEFORE it. I had a roommate who used to say "get off at (landmark)." Well...how about tell me the stop BEFORE that landmark so I can prepare to get off the bus?

Why not just leave extra time? Going the day before doesn't guarantee you a smooth trip the next day - what about traffic, tube strikes, train delays, roadworks etc? I'm pretty anxious about being on time (to the point where I'd give myself 1.5 hours to make a 30 minute journey, if it was an important appointment), but a recce the day before wouldn't put my mind at ease. Giving myself loads of extra time on the day, would.
