    This is a clever way for acoustic drummers to have a more versatile range of sounds. Introducing a modern twist to acoustic drums. I really like this option and will more than likely add the Yamaha AD 10 unit to my drum kit. Thanks, Nick, and Yamaha for this new innovation.

    answered the "live setting question". but actually someone here has used it live and it changes your whole perception. just use in ear monitors and no floor monitors near you to prevent the extra bleed although might depend on the genre too otherwise maybe you can unplug the mic lead and just use triggers. thanks!

    I just got and used live for the first time. I added a snare trigger. After calabrating the mics in it at the gig, I find that it is a reasonable IEM solution too. I could hear vocals and other instruments enough and my drums sounded great. I might move my ride over more next time , as indeed it was too much in the mix.

      Mark Eurenz Cabusas it is great for live performances in small to medium size venues. I’ve been using it since November when it came out. I don’t use overheads or close miking anymore. Just the EAD and an internal mic in the kick. The video demos on this thing does not do it justice. Plus in live settings, you can also use it as your monitor for your kit and will also allow your band mates to hear your kit at a reasonable volume. So many possibilities and options in a live setting. Again, I need to stress, like Nick said, in a huge live setting, this won’t work. But when you’re in a small to medium size club, where sound is an issue then it will work depending on the size of your band, where the back line is set up, etc. Me personally I play in a 3 & 4 piece band and we use in ear monitors. We have a direct in to the board with the bass, and use close miking on the guitar amps so they don’t have to be turned up extremely loud. Also, being spread out on the stage a bit will also keep the amps from bleeding into the mic as well. Even if you use overheads, you’ll still have that problem. This is more centralized and you have total control over the gain. I keep mine set at 2-3 depending on the venue and haven’t had any issues with either the kit not being heard or too loud, or any kind of bleed or feedback from surrounding instruments.

    • @eucabusas
      @eucabusas 6 років тому +2

      drumfanatik316 I see. Looks like it works then. However, not to sound whiney, I come from a third world country and though our bassist has a DI on his multifx, most backline amps here aren't closed miced either. Venues are to small so I think bleed is still an issue. But yeah, I hope by next year the whole band will run on IEM. Looks like I gotta try it once it hits the stores here to see for myself.

    Thank you so much for this. I almost bought it for the wrong application. I really wanted to use it for a live setting. If there is too much bleed from the other instruments, that will ruin a band's sound.

      I used live last night. I was going to go from the ead10 to the FOH and back to my iems, adding vocal mics etc... I found the unit picked up everything fine so I kept it simple and just plugged my headphones into the ead10. So, I found the perceived disadvantage and actual benefit.

      @UCFRnBFm3CVE5mwt4RLzYXHw I sometimes plug a snare and kick trigger in and blend the sound; but honestly if your kit sounds good and you use a preset that enhances the sound (via the mics); I just keep it simple. Ultimately, let's say for rock, I don't need my kick to sound like I am in Def Leppard; I just want it to have a little punch in my IEMs and slight reverb yet be my drum's sound. Good Luck to you.

  • @RoeShamBoe
    @RoeShamBoe 6 років тому +11

    probably the question a lot of drummers have is what happens if you play this with silent stroke heads and L80 cymbals? can this be used (triggered, not triggered, etc.) to create a "quiet" practice kit perhaps by using the triggers only and using the mic to pick up the L80s (if possible)? thanks.

    • @totigerus

    • @RoeShamBoe
      @RoeShamBoe 6 років тому

      yeah i wasn't sure, but i think the "mix" was just fx-heavy as opposed to running mesh heads. i know what you mean about some parts sounding like you couldn't hear the acoustics heads at all.

    • @tylrbass
      @tylrbass 6 років тому +4

      Looks like you would want the added triggers since the main unit is a microphone and wouldn't pick up the mesh head hits very well, if at all

    • @drumfanatik316
      @drumfanatik316 6 років тому

      It will pick up the cymbals a bit, but you would need to have triggers like he has on the snare in the video, to trigger sounds. So the actual sensor/microphone part, won’t pick up silent stroke heads.

    • @HazeAnderson
      @HazeAnderson 6 років тому +1

      "can this be used to create a "quiet" practice kit" No, quite the opposite. And don't bother trying to practice quiet -- if you can't play loud, find somewhere where you can play loud. If you have to be quiet, work on your rudiments on a pad instead.

I understand that the app will do a count off click and you can have a click while you play to a song, but if I were to upload that video to a social media platform, would the click be embedded in the track, or is there a way to play along with the click and then take it out in the final video. from what I understood the mic picks up the acoustic sounds of the shells, and the module lets you add some effects and sounds so in your headphones you'd have a mix of the acoustic sound of the shells and the chosen effects. And you can change the balance between the natural sounds and the effects, am I right ?
    More important, what is the function of the trigger exactly? How is the sound/effect of the trigger (bass and/or snare) controlled ? Can you assign another sound to the trigger as to the shells and how's it done ?

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  6 років тому +1

      Hello, David! You are correct. The mic does pick up the acoustic sound of the drums and allows you to put effects onto the drums in real time, with a balance of how much of the effect you would like mixed with your natural drum sound. As for the trigger input, there are actually over 700 different sounds that you are able to assign to additional trigger inputs that are built into the sound module. Similar to other electronic drum set modules, you will just have to go into the sound module and choose from preset drum sounds, or you can assign the sound that you would like to have for each trigger. Thanks for you interest!

    Just found out about this tool. Thanks for the review! I'm wondering if this might be a cool thing to use for in-ear monitoring on stage and get a nice drum sound without bothering the sound engineer. But is there a way to adjust the individual volumes? Like more kick drum, less toms, more cymbals …?

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  Місяць тому

      Hey, Lauren! Yes, you are able to adjust the output volume for each individual sample. I think that could be a really great option to use specifically for your in-ear monitors. You’ll just need to find a way to make sure that’s still being mixed in with the rest of your in-ear mix though.
      Feel free to reach out if you’d like to further discuss. We can certainly help more if we know your exact setup.

      Yes, but you have to use Yamaha's Rec'n'Save app. The audio is recorded to your phone or iPad that way. If you use just the EAD to record, you can record either to it directly (very short recording time -- a little over a minute, and gets erased every time you start a new recording), or to a USB stick.

      Hello, J_Drummer! The EAD10 is designed to pick up the entirety of a drum kit when the microphone is mounted to the bass drum hoop. From there, all you need to do is plug in a set of headphones to the main module and you’ll be able to hear your drum kit through the EAD10.

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  Рік тому

      Hello, Big daddy micah! Not really. Without triggers, the EAD10 relies on built in mics to capture the audio of acoustic drums. Low volume cymbals might be okay, but with mesh heads and without triggers, your kit will just sound like mesh heads with effects on them. A set of triggers is recommend for using the EAD10 with mesh heads, and Yamaha goes over those setup specs here:

      no, it imbeds the audio recording into the video file, saved by your phones audio processor, so it will likely no be able to handle the high and low frequencies unless you have the best phone available. (my phone has a 32hz sound card in it, so it cannot process the full range of the drums)
      so yes the sound and video go together... but they cannot be separated late in an editor.

    • @drumdude68
      @drumdude68 6 років тому

      The Yamaha EAD10 is a better option in my opinion IF you add 2 more triggers for toms. The video recording and upload app is the cool feature that exceeds its dollar value.
      See the review of the Sabian Sound Kit here:
      ua-cam.com/video/qIyT-mspiN8/v-deo.html
      You will see the the recording quality limitations of the Sabian products in this video.
      You could, however, use both Yamaha and Sabian products to expand your mic'ing capabilities by taking one of the main outputs of the Sabian mixer and sending it into the AUX input of the Yamaha EAD10. That way your Sabian signal would get effected with all of the onboard effects of the Yamaha. You would just hard pan each channel in the Sabian mixer to the right or left output, and then send that mono signal to the Yamaha since you only have one AUX input on the Yamaha. That would be an incredible set up! ... But do you want to spend $800 to get those results? ... Big question.

    What is the result if you do not clamp the microphone box to your kick rim, but instead place it (somehow) not touching the kick but (somehow) in the same location? In other words, does the system design and resulting sound depend on the pickup of vibrations from kick-to-unit? And not only the two mics?
    And.... can you get a version that does NOT have all the effects? Where you want merely a two-small-mics-in-one-easy-spot recording/mixing/compression solution?

      "Manual editing and aligning to the tempo in the DAW is always annoying" you'd be better off with Celemony's Melodyne -- perhaps Melodyne 4 essential at $100 is all you need to control the grid, but the full package is $850. Great review! I am considering an EAD10 and have 2 questions and was wondering if you have an idea about them:
    1. Can you use different samples for different velocities? I have some That Sound samples and they have 5 different velocity samples per snare. Is it possible to load them in so that they trigger accordingly to how hard you hit the snare?
    2. Is is possible to set up the EAD10 in a way that you only get the sampled kick and snare (so I could use them and add other mics too it) and you can seperate them in the outputs?
    Would be awesome if someone knew!

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  5 років тому +1

      Hi Wagh_Rules! The EAD10 does only allow there to be one sample in place, so you would not be able to set up different samples at different velocities. If you want more layers to be there with a Yamaha sound module, you can check out the DTX502 that lets you set up 2, and the DTX700 which allows 4.
      As for playback of just the samples, you can turn off the built-in mic, allowing for just the samples to play back. You would just need to pan them left and right to be able to have them be on their own output.

    Each video I watch on the ead 10 shows drummers beating the daylights out of their drums. Not unusual. What happens (other than being called a pansy drummer) when you play with brushes, or gently, or with dynamics? And with a 12 piece kit, for which I always hope? How many different drums and cymbals (and wood blocks and claves and timbales) are within the sound module?

    • @sweetwater

      Thanks for the question, Carl. Yes, drummers like to bash! As for your question, it would work. But, most of the sounds are designed more for "pop/rock" type sounds. With brushes, it way sound a little unusual. As for size of kit, it depends. The mic picks up quite a lot, so as long as it is in the range of the main BD unit, it should work fine. Experimentation would be the best way to see how it is going to work for you. Thank you for the interest!
