Yamaha sent me the EAD10 and DT50S and wanted to see how I could use it. I often get asked about cheap and easy ways to record drums for those starting out. Who else would love to see a standalone version of the mic that attaches to the bass drum, so that you could record that directly into a computer, so people can still use it to record without the need of the expensive controller?
I know I'm kinda late but you can use Zoom H series as a stereo mic. H4n has a stereo mic and 2 xlr combo input if you want to connect more cables. You can connect to your pc via Usb cable and use it as and audio inteface. And it's half the price of an EAD.
I recommend blending it with your mic setup. The EAD has a great mid range punchiness and dirt to it, compared to the clean sound you are getting from your mics. Blending the EAD signal in with your mic setup would give a thicker sound overall and I know that's how I would use it.
@@konradkarolczyk9138All mics that are a different distance from the source will always have a different phase. I tried it myself, its pretty decent if you're recording for a demo or a pre-prod. For metal drummers out there, the trigger sucks for double bass. Altough, u can plug an extra one for the bass drum and mix it with the ead 10 trigger and it works perfectly !
Late to the party here, but am I the only one who actually preffered the EAD10 audio over the standard mics? I'm admittedly a bit of a minimalist, old-school dude, but the drums just sounded so much more alive to me. I picked up one of these when it first came out. I really wanted to use it like an effects pedal for drums. It was fun to mess around with, but a pain in the butt in a live setting. It caused feedback and sound engineers couldn't figure out how to mix it. If I wanted to use it to run triggers... that is another $200-300. Now I am in $800 or more... A fun video would be playing normal songs with the crazy scenes! Also that tight scene was amazing sounding. Sounded like something from Yes. Keep it up.
Simply Great Video ! It was fun watching. Your playing along was also real good.... I liked everything you did.. you are good not just a duffer drummer.. You have a lot of good moves. Your selection of effects on each part was real good too.. Thank you !

I think these are fun and indeed a professional tool; I predict we'll be seeing a bunch of these on the resale market in about 4-6 months. If you want a great practice tool; play 2 up toms (thus your ride is already higher and to the right); have quality isolated earphones; and don't really expect (or desire) to take this to live shows - then you will really find this product amazing. A++; If you don't use that extra tom and have to (weirdly) move your ride cymbal over (the score will drop to a B+). Don't have great headphones (C+). Really think it will work amazingly live w/o additional mics (C) or find that it is hard to get band and drums in your live mix because there isn't an Aux IN then (C- or D+).
Really well done Brother.I'm betting Roland won't let this go unchallenged.I'm frustrated using a 57 and Audix D6 into my Tascam Lo-Fi portastudio. The Yamaha looks so much simpler.
How would I use it? Hmmm. I think I would use it to add a bit of definition and fat to my toms. Perhaps a bit of sub content to my kick. That's it. By the way, in your video where 'EAD Audio' appears in the lower right corner (like at 12:32) how is the EAD10 picking up the full mix including cymbals? That little bass drum mounted mic picks everything up?
I will use this in different ways : - Record drums and upload cover on yt quickly (NO BLEEDING , less shit and zero editing) - Study song and drumparts quickly with the app - Band situation : the guitarist wrote a riff, he can send it to me and quickly I can try my drum part on his riff - Quickly set up both live and studio (And I don't need to carry mic and overs, and can Also mixup trigger/EAD with mics) - Mixture of acoustic and E-kit sounds - Preproduction of my band with a decent quality - Also A trigger if you need to triggers and you have to buy a drum module ,cables etcc... I just made some calculations... on THOMANN the cheaper mic set,the cheaper stands, cable and good audio interface (plus drum module and trigger) cost me 2/3 times more than EAD. I prefer this to cheap mics set up. Now.... I need to save up some money... And for ITALIANS guys I will make a video about all this features soon. (If you want to make also an english version let me know)
Hey man, I’ve been watching your videos for a while and I really love the content! I am pretty new to the whole acoustic drum set thing and was wondering if you could do a video on how exactly you tune your drums. I’ve watched numerous people but I can’t find anyone who has drums tuned as nice as yours are. It would be much appreciated!
Just don’t put your ride cymbal anywhere NEAR this thing. If you have a bass drum mounted 2 up and 1 down setup like this it’s probably fine. A 1 up and 1 down setup with rid in between, no bueno. ALL you’re gonna hear is that ride cymbal. Same issue if you have an offset tom setup.
Can see this being useful in a live context. Record samples of your kick and snare at home with a decent mic, then use the ead to trigger the samples live. Cut down on the channels needed in the desk, do your own mixing.
Serious question: I see there are multiple settings of what snare or kick sound to choose from. What if you want the sound of your snare and kick? How reliable is it at capturing that?
I like presets like Tight, Solid Rock, Vintage, Distortion and not I’m not big fun this frogs effects. Natural sound - give so cool results!! Drums sounds like part of music. Give to drumset character. I prefer EAD sound more. Sure this great device always can mix with any mics, when you want! Great device! Imagine this device long time- and it comes from to reality!! Wow!!
Hi Rdavidr I really enjoyed your video, thank you so much for sharing this information. I'm thinking about buying a Yamaha EAD10 to record my band's songs. Do you believe the sound quality that the EAD10 records is good enough to be in a quality recording? Thanks for the information!
I bought it yesterday... just as David with the snare trigger....saw many reviews about it and let me tell you... nothing like this one... i'll be updating when I use it
Yamaha Corporation of America EAD10 is an awesome product... Enhances my drum kit sound & takes it to another dimmension of sound... As a drummer on a scale from 0 to 10 i'll give an 8.5... As a live sound tech i'll give it a 9... I wish there could be a firmware update so both Drummers & Sound Tech could bring the EAD10 some interesting uses... Uses like - recording both AUX & ESD sound on the USB - Individual volume & EQ Mics settings to have a more controlled sound on the mixer or headphones... I'll post a link using the EAD10 DRUM RECORDED TRACK with my GOPRO ambience sound during a gig... Obviously the drums will be clearer due to the track from the EAD10 - NO SETTINGS ON THE EAD10 - NO TRIGGERS - NO EFX - NO REVERB - JUST THE NATURAL SOUND OF MY DRUM KIT... ENJOY ua-cam.com/video/kn_VZBUKfxA/v-deo.html
Man..... nothing compares to that mic audio.... I want to love the EAD and get one, but I am struggling in finding true love with it (albeit I haven't actually used one!!) - ps - nice playing mate
on the first track I like the mic setup's sound, but.. could be more professional. But! The EAD audio sounds Profesh Automatically. That's nuts! Sucks I won't be able to play drums in an apartment to get better, but you know.. Creativity is Limitless! I like how you can change the sound of your drumset. It's hard to do that on the fly with just a key tool and Random idiosynchrosies the thing helps sum up
Hi David, I'm a bit concerned by the bleed in the onbord mic in a band situation (rehersal or performance). Do you have any experience or info on that? Great work as always. I love your channel.
Little bit late with a question but can you please tell me what do you think can this little beauty record band rehearsal, I mean the whole band or drums and guitar? How good is that mic they produced? Since you can record your drums with that thing... Thanks David! :)
Great video (like always). Can you put sand or beads inside of a drum and see what it sounds like ? I can’t try it myself cuz I have an electronic set and I can’t find any videos online
What's it like with dynamic ranges? I've heard that's the main downside to triggers and electronic drums, doesn't give the same authentic feel and can sound sightly fake and programmed. Doesn't always catch the same variety of tones as an acoustic setup. I'd be interested to know how this handles a wider dynamic range.
Ok, I'm a little confused. So, the snare and kick are the only drums with triggers (and you hear no dry sound?). What is picking up cymbals when recording with EAD? I'm guessing there is still an overhead for those? Consequently picking up dry sound too?
That "Tight" preset you made sounds like it would be really good to make the drums cut through in a mix. Kinda reminds me of how Tame Impala drums are mixed.
Dear David. Thanks for your video! I just bought an ead10., 😁 I want to record with rec n share app but it does not work! (Android smartphone, USB cable to host = not recognized by the ead10). Do you know any tutorial about recording this way (rec n share) with also troubleshootings and solutions? Thanks a lot, Lionel Paris, France 🇫🇷
MayI ask another question....I got the same setup like you, the EAD10 with the Bass Drum Hoop mounted Device and the DT50S Snare Trigger. How do you setup the two ? For each of the two units you can choose between "separate" and "paired" in the menu of the EAD10? With the cables that come with everything to me it seems that the preset "separate" for the Bass Drum Hoop mounted unit should be changed to "paired" and the setting for the DT50S Trigger should be set to "paired" since the DT50S has 2 trigger zones. One for the snare head and one for the snare rim, right ? ( The "seperate" setting for the Bass Drum Hoop Mounted unit would make sense when u use an Y-cable and connect one of the Mono jacks with the trigger input of the Bass Drum Hoop Mounted Unit that comes with the EAD10 and the other mono jack with another kick drum trigger unit, for example the Yamaha DT50K ( looks like the DT50S) and run the other end of the y-cable( the stereo jack) into the Kick1/2A input of the EAD10 since the Kick1/2B input is just for the microphone input of the Bass Drum Hoop Mounted Unit that comes with the EAD10...., at least that's what I think how it works / should work) 'd be glad to hear your opinion on that and if you see it the same way like I mentioned above....or maybe I´m wrong and you can help me out. Greetings.....
Hello I I bought the Yamaha EAD10 on Amazon and I set it up and then of course I have somebody helping me because I’m a become blind around 2018 with the infection in the eye so I am I have to do everything by hearing and stuff like that I’m feeling my question is when I did the scenes the different scenes and all that I don’t know how I did it but I can’t figure out again and make him buttons and knobs like when I turn knobs it doesn’t work and I guess I have to have a button and then do another something can you please help me

It seem like more compressed sound with the mic
He must've not mixed the mic audio on purpose.

I liked the EAD for the first track and the straight mic audio for the second track.
You can see the nostalgia in daves face during the second song 🤙🏼😂
Great product demo
Now does this work for players using 2 kick drums? Or do I need another EAD trigger on that 2nd one?
I will use this in different ways :
- Record drums and upload cover on yt quickly (NO BLEEDING , less shit and zero editing)
- Study song and drumparts quickly with the app
- Band situation : the guitarist wrote a riff, he can send it to me and quickly I can try my drum part on his riff
- Quickly set up both live and studio (And I don't need to carry mic and overs, and can Also mixup trigger/EAD with mics)
- Mixture of acoustic and E-kit sounds
- Preproduction of my band with a decent quality
- Also A trigger if you need to triggers and you have to buy a drum module ,cables etcc...
(If you want to make also an english version let me know)
Did you ever make an English version?

@rdavidr 6 years later do you still feel this is the best budget mic system for drummers on social media playing covers?
very cool, I'm just a bit baffled though at how something that sits on the bass drum seems to struggle the most reproducing the kick sound.
Lol that would be fun to play with and drumming would never get old.
Hi, great video! But I have a question: Can I plug my Yamaha EAD 10 directly into my Mac with just one cable ?Or do I need a separate audio interface?
Them cymbals sound sick!
You should do diy double single pedal (like Duallist) !:D
Can see this being useful in a live context. Record samples of your kick and snare at home with a decent mic, then use the ead to trigger the samples live. Cut down on the channels needed in the desk, do your own mixing.
Hey David, nice Video! I own a EAD10 by myself and I wondered how you made your "TIGHT" preset. Can you send me the configuration data?

Hi Rdavidr
I really enjoyed your video, thank you so much for sharing this information. I'm thinking about buying a Yamaha EAD10 to record my band's songs. Do you believe the sound quality that the EAD10 records is good enough to be in a quality recording?
Thanks for the information!
for a full band? Not at all. Just drums? yeah you can get by with it if you dont have the means for "normal" recordings
nice!!! beside the EAD10... What cymbals are you using on this vdo?
How does it work in a practice setting with a full band? Does the mic pic up bass and guitar?
Drum Thug theyre not mics theyre triggers which only sense vibrations that theyre touching so no
Brandon Quod thats only true for the snare and kick. The rest is picked by the stereo mics mounted on the bass drum hoop.
Drum Thug so yes it might depending on your studio and how close your band members/amps are
I am a Meme oh ok i didnt realize that
It picks up sound within a 4 foot radius.
Nice lead in to the track!
I bought it yesterday... just as David with the snare trigger....saw many reviews about it and let me tell you... nothing like this one... i'll be updating when I use it
We'd love to hear your thoughts on it, Ricky!
ENJOY

@@rickymastersound So you have to have your own amp or go through the PA know to hear the EAD10?
Man..... nothing compares to that mic audio....
It's hard to do that on the fly with just a key tool and Random idiosynchrosies the thing helps sum up
This is so cool
Hi David, I'm a bit concerned by the bleed in the onbord mic in a band situation (rehersal or performance). Do you have any experience or info on that? Great work as always. I love your channel.
I can tell you, it’s terrible for live use.
My wife won this from Sweetwater drumfest, she can't wait to use it on her kit
I got one coming tomorow...
Great video!
But I didn’t get one thing - does EAD capture cymbals or you still need overheads?
I've never seen Dave so hardcore... His drum set is huuuuuge!
I just bought an ead10., 😁
I want to record with rec n share app but it does not work! (Android smartphone, USB cable to host = not recognized by the ead10).
Do you know any tutorial about recording this way (rec n share) with also troubleshootings and solutions?
Thanks a lot,
Lionel

Please make more videos.
( The "seperate" setting for the Bass Drum Hoop Mounted unit would make sense when u use an Y-cable and connect one of the Mono jacks with the trigger input of the Bass Drum Hoop Mounted Unit that comes with the EAD10 and the other mono jack with another kick drum trigger unit, for example the Yamaha DT50K ( looks like the DT50S) and run the other end of the y-cable( the stereo jack) into the Kick1/2A input of the EAD10 since the Kick1/2B input is just for the microphone input of the Bass Drum Hoop Mounted Unit that comes with the EAD10...., at least that's what I think how it works / should work)
'd be glad to hear your opinion on that and if you see it the same way like I mentioned above....or maybe I´m wrong and you can help me out.
Greetings.....
is somebody being endorsed??? ;)
Sounds good
