Due to poaching and war the population of the Northern White Rhino has diminished to just two left and these two ladies, Najin and Fatu - mother and daughter are protected by a team of fearless rangers 24/7.
We asked if we could be put through ranger training and test out the job roles of a rhino caretaker. What does it actually take to look after these huge giants?
After learning there are many dangers to this job including tracking poachers - who wish is to steal the Rhino's horns as they believe they are of great value or have medicinal purposes (both untrue as Rhino horns are made from the same materials as our hair and nails)
We learnt what was needed to do if a poaching situation every occurred. what the rangers carry in their bags for trekking and patrolling that last up to 5 days and we also joined the K9 Unit where we met the dog squad.
The dogs each have their own roles they play while they are supporting the armed rangers - Drum, the spinger spaniel is an ammunition sniffer - he can sniff out live bull.ets, magazines etc wild Stacy and the other bloody hounds are tracker dogs, sniffing out poachers and bad guys in the community.
This has to be one of our favourite videos that we've made and participated in to date.
There may only be two Rhinos left of this species but the Bio Rescue teams in Ol Pejeta are working around the clock to prevent them from becoming fully extinct.
Their last hope is on IVF treatment. To date, the team has successfully created 14 northern white rhino embryos utilising Fatu’s eggs and the preserved sperm of four deceased males.

NORTHERN white rhinos. There are many Black and White rhinos but only two Northern White Rhinos.

I flippin love you two beauties!!!! This ones right up my street! I ran an Rhino anti poaching course out in SA and my (Ex-Navy Seal) mate runs Soldiers for wildlife charity which sets up anti poaching teams and trains them etc. They are flippin incredible creatures eh! These rangers are the best of the best. Well trusted, which is a good thing. In the past there has been people that take care of these animals and are easily paid off and this is why we have so little white rhinos. When the last male died that was had to hear. It’s nice to see the females are so well protected. Well done.

OMG, you guys! I am so thrilled that you decided to explore more of Africa's wildlife! You are so brave to be this close to these rhinos! They are so massive! It takes guts, Amiee, to be a "Florance Nightingale" to the rhinos!
I've been close to the very large, American buffalo, but they were on the other side of a very sturdy double fence! I cant imagine being that close to all of these animals! (BTW, i love the African Painted dogs! They are smart and very endangered. I drew a family of them to highlight how beautiful and special they are.)
