  • Could we buy some land and build a tiny home? Get healthy - go to drinkAG1.com/kingingit
Last week we started the hunt for the house of our dreams. We had initially thought we wanted a home already built for us to renovate. But since viewing properties for sale in the highlands but not finding exactly what we were looking for, we thought it would be worth exploring a selection of different builds.
We asked ourselves, could we buy land? Could we build our own house? Then we met friends who owned a campsite and wondered what owning that would look like?
This week we head to West wales to view two more amazing properties and visit @CampOutWest - couple Emilie and Jon that are hoping to build their campground with a veg patch and live sustainably and live off grid. We see if building a campsite/ tiny home/ air bnb/ glamping site might be an option.

I LOVE house #2!! A library, an office, a breakfast room, a craft room. Funny how humans manage to fill the space they have, be it a "Custard" or a huge house, lol. I agree with Craig, the second house is 'warm' and the views are lovely. You can put in a pond that you can see while sitting in your breakfast nook. I have so much vision for this house!! LOLOL, but you, dear ones, must go with what you feel is right for you. Good luck and ty for taking us along.

The thing about number one was the tiny windows and so it just seemed dark and cavernous. The second studio house had so much light and had a mix of modern and traditional.

I had such a hard time buying a house because I'd imagine myself in every one-- just like Amiee. What worked really well for me and my husband was writing a list of must haves, making an excel spreadsheet that was weighted with what we both thought was most important and then when we visited the houses we went through the checklist and put an offer in on the one that met our needs within 90%. It worked well for me to remove my strong emotions from the decision. Three years later, no regrets on the home we purchased!

my partner and I are shopping for a motorhome to travel in and we are doing the same thing. a NEED to have list and a WANT to have list. If it doesn't check off most of the need list, no matter how much we love it aesthetically, its a no go

Yes, the correct way to find your ideal. Spreadsheet if you must but a shopping list will do. We bought a French home, 1st we decided where to be then looked at houses. A week of viewings and we bought the last one. Our boat was a big purchase too, we were very strict with needs so there was only 2 in Europe for sale, England & Germany. We bought the one in Germany as it was cheaper to buy and move to La Rochelle. No regrets.

You know what maybe gave you the good vibes on House #2? It was all the creativity that’s been produced there. I really liked the idea of you two (specifically) living in that space but I think it was just because a creative space seems right for you. I’m crossing my fingers for a place off the road and secluded for you… not sure how many places are left like that in the world! ♥️

We bought a house in the middle of nowhere , it was built in 1752 , a stone cottage that needed a lot of renovation . We have spent years fixing it up and still it needs constant work as it is so old and I can tell you it is stressful and so exhausting and expensive. So be careful what you wish for. . We are now selling up and moving to a modern home .
I wish you both loads of luck finding your dream home ❤

We did the same old homes are cash cows. After spending a fortune a survey before the sale showed damp in all the walls and the house needed underpinning. We we're gutted. Thankfully the buyer was in love with it was a cash buyer and bought it anyway. Nothing is more stressful than buying and selling House's.

If buying/building a property with a country lane access road, aside from width requirements for Custard, check if you or the council are responsible for trimming the hedgerow! Could be a massive (and expensive) job if it’s yours 💗

As much as both houses have character, they are both such a massive undertaking. I would be so worried about mold, replacing all the pipes, septic issues, the roof. With the demo included, it actually might be cheaper to just buy land and build your own- though I do love all the character and history throughout each home!

Have you watched “Trent & Allie”? They are former vanlifers who have a UA-cam channel. They have been building their own home in the mountains in the state of Utah since 2020. Their videos are so well done and show you all the highs and lows of building your own home and the mistakes as well. Initially they thought they only wanted a tiny home, so they built a home that basically has no walls, just the bathroom. Their bedroom is a loft that overlooks the living room. However, they now have a child and would like to have another child and realize that their home isn’t big enough, so they are now adding an addition to the back of the home they built. They have so many different challenges to overcome building on a mountain. I think you would find their process very interesting if you are considering a new build.

Craig said the one house seemed “cold” and the second one had a better vibe-I’m thinking it was all about the natural light. All those windows and skylights gave the second house a light and airy feel (especially good if anyone struggles with seasonal depression). That’s something to think about for the next houses you look at.

Good neighbors can be a blessing. My rule with neighbors is from Proverbs, "Let not your feet go often into your neighbors house, lest they grow weary of you". Keeping it friendly but not too involved in each others lives. Not a fan of gossip, so I avoid that as well.
The hopes and dreams of huge family holidays can often cloud our vision of the future. Unfortunately family members do grow old, often unable to travel, the sad reality of some passing, many get so busy with demands of their own lives that finding time to get together is not always possible for every holiday. Just a warning, base your decisions on what will work for you on the day to day for the long haul and not a holiday event. Same for your upcoming wedding. It's a day and real life is so much more important to plan for and invest in. Love you guys and am praying you find your quiet place to rest, your shelter from the storm and your solid ground to grow on.

One tip I could offer is to use Google earth to see how the property is situated so there's no surprises when you arrive. When i bought the current house I wasnt in love with it, but the property is stunning. No neighbors, quiet road, gorgeous lot with a creek running along the side and the back through the woods. It came with a chicken coop and paddocks for goats, so it's a ready-made little homestead. I almost didnt go look at it but I did and when I arrived it felt just right. Country people are the best people and take care of each other without being in your business. Good luck, Lads, I am so excited for you ❤️

Rewiring in the age of computers and replumbing are both quite expensive so it wouldn't just be cosmetic changes. Before knocking down walls, you have to find out whether they're load-bearing; otherwise your roof could collapse. Old chimneys have to be checked and maybe relined so no carbon monoxide gets into the house. These are just things I wish I'd known before embarking on a renovation.

Its very early Monday morning here in Western Australia......my favourite time of the week because all my UA-cam faves post and I get to catch up on all your lives, after your video Im off to watch what Eamon and Bec are up to and how the baby is growing. It is amazing watching you all grow and develop as humans and Im finding this next part of your individual journeys fascinating.
Love the second house in theory......but it was a LOT of house.

How fun to go on this journey with you!
If you find yourself with an out building or two, you could make a tiny house and swap rent for caretaking and pet sitting your pets for when you travel. Just need a tenant you trust. OR you could end up with an Air B&B to help offset costs, OR if you have a yoga studio space, you could rent it as space for a yoga teacher, body worker, Reiki practitioner, or sound healer. Another source of income. 👍🏻 If you have a cute space, it could be a small wedding venue. Just leave yourself enough time when nothing is happening so you can have your privacy. ❤

Each to their own, but it would be a NO from me buying land and then renting small places to strangers. If I was buying land or a home in country side.....I dont want to see or hear anyone unless theyre invited😂 Loved the layout of the 2nd one, but again neighbours🙄 Youre looking for your own retreat, somewhere to switch off from the outside world and some times all its chaos, so I agree, back to drawing board and fingers crossed you find your very own piece of heaven in Scotland. Its a huge next step guys, daunting but exciting at same time scary as hell, dont rush into anything, take your time, something is out there for you im sure😍If it takes you a year to find it, I will be watching every episode😉 Love Rose xxxx

I think these homes are a bit big for you guys. One is the initial cost and then the renovation costs. It seems that you guys need a place with four bedrooms (master, kids, and guest), a big dining room, a studio or den for work. Out buildings are not a big concern since you can have a barn/studio built for not a lot. Get something where you can have a garden and is away from a busy road and neighbors. It'll be hard finding a "perfect" place, just make a list of everything you want and then prioritize it. Whatever ticks the most priority things should be your pick.

In a perfect world, a person would want to take the very best of each property and put it together on the ideal land. Shopping for a house is so much fun and nerve-racking at the same time, for sure. You will find that perfect house or piece of land to build on.

Suggestions for how to fill rooms. A spa with a portable sauna would be nice. So would a walk in pantry for long term and other food storage. If you have a garden you will likley want to can and dry vegtables and herbs. And in today's society it is never a bad thing to have a couple years worth of long term food storage items. A large walk in closet for your clothes and an area you could turn into a reading nook would be great. Then of course your guest room and office/ studio.

I agree with you that although house no 2 had some virtues there were too many negatives. All that space takes a lot of heating in the winter: you don't want to live cheek-by-jowl with neighbours and you don't want to move to the country only to face parking issues. With building materials being so expensive, renovation is extortionate even when you do most of it yourself, so don't pay too much up front. Scotland may be cheaper initially, but when you factor in the travel required to keep you in touch with family & friends the scale swings the other way. If your parents get ill how are you going to support them from Scotland? You need a house on its own, well away from main roads and railway lines, with a huge garden or a field which might enable you to do interesting side projects (camping, horticulture, animals, etc, etc). If you've got plenty of space you can live in a mobile home while you're renovating the house. Good film, cheers!

Lads, your videos are my absolute favourite on the internet. Yours are the only ads I'll actually watch instead of swiping through since they're always creative and hilarious. Your outro in this video was bang on funny. And the two of you just seem like lovely humans all around. I hope the adventure of finding your home and starting your next chapter is as enjoyable for you to go through as it is for us to watch on the other side of the screen!
