these creatures have lived millions & millions of years but it took mankind less than 100 years to wipe them out

It wasn't mankind that killed them. It was money. The idea of profit is what drove poachers to hunt these animals to near extinction. We gave paper value and it's driving people to kill innocent people or animals for it. It's all they care about.

I remember back in the 90's when they had a documentary about them being endangered. Fast forward 25 years and this is what is left. My heart is shattered. I remember in 6th grade I did a report on my favorite animals. Here they are...the last 2

Yet the northern white rhino, get this sympathy boy! In 1984 there was 31 northern white rhinos alive, and 17 were in captivity! Did you miss that on your report?

When my grandparents were born, there were a lot of them. There were Tasmanian tigers and passenger pigeons and ivory-billed woodpeckers and Javan and Caspian tigers. But no more.

This is a mother/daughter pair and i think the mother is in her 40's which is the twilight of her life they dont live too much older than in their 40s! The authorities wanna use invetro fertilization and use these lovely ladies eggs & frozen sperm from the last northern white rhino Males (who passed a few yrs ago) and implant the fertilized egg into a Southern White Rhino to carry the future of the N. white rhino species

what sucks even more is that both rhinos are female so they cant breed with each other and you would think maybe they could breed with another species of rhino to at least somewhat preserve them? Nope, both of them are incapable of becoming pregnant. so the only way to save them is with science which might not work thought I hope it does.

Here’s the really sad part.
The last male, prior to his death, was Sudan, who was the father of Najin, the older female, who herself is the mother of the younger one, Fatu. Breeding with the two females, back when he was still alive, would had been inbreeding with his daughter and granddaughter.
Though, Sudan was already well past the age where he could still be fertile when he died. And at this current time, both Najin and Fatu are too old to even hold any embryos, let alone babies, in their bodies.
That’s why they have to use southern white Rhinos for surrogate mothers. It’s a gamble, but it’s also a possible way to eventually breed the hybrid embryos back into a pure northern white rhino state. Hopefully, all of the embryos will develop into babies, and at least one will be a male and one will be female.
These rhinos are the single most endangered animals on the planet. This is their last chance to survive.
It’s cause of the poachers that they’re going extinct 😒 hopefully they can find a male northern white rhino somewhere so they can mate

I blame Chinese traditional medicine (which I don't really know if it even works, most likely a placebo effect), and people greedy enough keep the market running.
The only way I see this kind of behavior stopping is that it doesn't become profitable anymore (just like the abolition of slavery, look it up)

I don't think it is trophy hunting. There is a huge demand in China for rhino horn and other animal parts, because they believe it can cure anything. This leads to them creating a lot of demand which poachers fulfill.
Although I wouldn't do it myself trophy hunting when legal is quite good for nature overall. This is because the money raised by letting someone hunt an animal is then used to protect nature. So that 1 buffalo dying might save 10 others.
There is nothing we can do against wealthy millionaires that use this stuff a status symbol, libido enhancer or any such crap. We can only support organizations that employ James and likely-minded people.

It’s heartbreaking. These two females lived with the last male white rhino on earth. If you care about the extinction of these extraordinary creatures, watch the documentary KIFARU, on the struggle to care for him until his last days. His DNA was cloned with the female eggs, and the hope is to produce Northern White Rhinos, again.
These caregivers truly give their lives to these magnificent animals, with their families’ sacrifice and support.

Certain cultures are becoming more affluent and with this there’s a demand for traditional medical and wealth items such as rhino horn, ivory, tiger penis, etc. There are many poachers willing to supply such items as well. If there is no concerted effort to stop the killing many species will become extinct in our lifetime. It’s a sad but true commentary.

These are 2 Northern white rhinos ,. The rest of africa has some 20,000 of them southern white rhinos. The species is not going extinct, this is just a subspecies group.

Actually, they're functionally extinct, which means that they're unable to breed due to a male not being alive. Or, the females did pass away and the embryos were a failure
Time to match her up with a black rhino, and do same retro-DNA breeding like Wooly Mammoth, by continuing to rebreed them back together to get up to the near-100% white rhino DNA.
I'm pretty sure they have semen from a male northern white rhino. Problem is the pregnancies didn't hold. So, they've been doing testing on black rhinos using IVF. Once they have more data the plan to then try it on these girls.

Black rhinos are a separate genus and species, the surrogates are probably southern white rhinos, which are a separate subspecies but same species.
They have frozen female eggs and frozen, unrelated, male sperm. They would attempt in-vitro fertilization at a later date. Right now they are trying to successfully do the IVF on the southern white and black rhinos.
@@jessiejohnson6424 and once IFV is completed, deceased individuals such as museum specimens and such might contain clonable DNA which might actually allow for full blooded northern white rhinos to be born and increase genetic diversity at the same time without the need of hybridization with southern white rhinos.

It’s really more so the fault of people who still buy products/medicines that contain rhino horn. Many poachers in these countries are incredibly poor and desperate. They’re trying to keep themselves and their families from starving. Doesn’t mean it’s ok... but they’re not the real villains in this scheme.

These are 2 Northern white rhinos ,. The rest of africa has some 20,000 of them southern white rhinos. The species is not going extinct, this is just a subspecies group.
It's rediculous people kill these big creatures for their horns 🤦🏻♂️💔💔 It doesn't solve anything for anyone who gets one of these horns. A pointless cruelty makes it more rediculous.

If we can't save this large, non-migrating animal, that we have seen charge happily around and back and forth in a zoo, play-lunging at zoo keepers and his mother, then we are a failure as a species, and we have sort of wondered about that for some time. We can't destroy their home range, to make farm land and cities and think he, and his family, can be happy in a cement prison cell. He didn't do anything wrong.
The animals we share this earth with, are all our responsibility, not just those people living on the land where he was born, but the whole planet needs to back up our need to save the creatures of our planet before we kill them off by seizing all the land growing the plants they eat, and making cities or farms, planting wheat, rice, or potatoes, then surround them with electrified fences to keep the animals out. We took their land, food, water, and built roads they can't survive crossing, and wonder why they become extinct. We are responsible for the animals and need a planet wide plan to protect them from extinction. If we were smart enough, we would know that ALL the answers we chase are found here, in the native lands and creatures that live here. We survive long-term by protecting the lands and creatures found there.

It sad this are the last 2 Northern White Rhinos, however, there is a program that they are going to use the South White Rhino to, clone or something, i dont remeber exactly. SInce this south rhino can carry the north rhino, they can try to save it.
He mentioned that they have taken 5 of their eggs and will be using in vitro fertilization to fertilize them, and surrogates will carry the babies.

My aunt has stray cats by her place. There is one dad and two moms. The moms hated each other. One mom had her kittens outside my aunt tried everything to keep them warm but sadly they didn’t make it. The mom was meowing everywhere looking for her babies. The other mom was also pregnant. She had her babies but this time my aunt brought the inside. Both of the moms came inside and kept the babies there. Now both of the moms share the kittens and feed them together and lick each other!

I hope the embryos will successfully become new Northern White Rhino babies. I also hoped that maybe one day, Mwenda’ and his colleagues will be able to spend more time with their families without any worry. I’m glad that Najin and Fatu are in great care with such great and compassionate people. There’s a lot of things in this world that we must protect including ourselves but the risks are very high and we have to cherish every peaceful moment...
So thankful for this sanctuary, and the folks who there ❤️
