The RG Cube XX is actually a smart release, given that the Powkiddy RGB30 didn't have a true competitor until now, and is a popular device. The original Cube and that other 1:1 device (🦄) are priced much higher (almost double). I love the RGB30 form factor. Due to how tall it is, for my big hands and long fingers it's the most comfy device out of all devices I bought so far (yes, I went the gauntlet route 😂). However I REALLY dislike the build quality of the RGB30 and it's D Pad. The Cube XX seems to fix both of these! 1:1 shines with SNES/NES/GBC/GB and this seems to be the perfect device for those systems. Hence the d pad on top is a great choice, and the sticks work well enough for shmups. The original Cube never made much sense to me, as it can play some GC and PS2 but not all, and not in full screen (not to mention the imperfect sticks). I guess it's cool for 3DS, but i'd rather play that on real hardware, or on a ultrawide phone with a telescopic controller. Side by side gives you access to the touchscreen within fingers reach, and looks gorgeous on OLED. There is an opening in the market for a device like this, and Anbernic has a well oiled up process on releasing devices fast. Especially something like this where they can frankenstein together existing parts. That's a competitive advantage of theirs, and it would be foolish not to use it. These lower end devices also get way more sales compared to more expensive ones and since they are releasing a tonne of these, it's probably lucrative for them. Also another advantage of reusing old chips is CFW support! That's huge. I'm sorry (🇨🇦) but Anbernic's device release strategy doesn't seem to focus on satisfying reviewers cravings for new shiny ultra unique devices 😁. What's a new Anbernic devices that would get you excited? The RG406h/m?
TLDR (Kidding, I read it) - You like the CubeXX. That's awesome, in a vacuum, I'd agree, but we're not in a vacuum. I don't agree that it's just reviewers that are unhappy with this, it's been a 50/50 split online with people unhappy with more H700's and those that just like rebuying the same device 8 times.
Good points. I bought the RGCube for it's ability to play ps2/gc level games and bc it had joystick up top (im one of the few that prefers it that way). But after having the cube for a couple months I agree that it doesnt make much sense to play those higher end systems, outside the 3ds. Im now looking forward to a release of a true 4:3 display thats's powerful enough to play all gc/ps2 upscaled to at least 720p on a 4-5 inch screen with left joystick up top. So far nothing like that seems to exist.
considering that anbernic releases a new device every 3weeks when the others take a few months, they do have the "luxury" of releasing tons of devices with the same chipset for us to choose which one we prefer
Good news cast man. I appreciate how candid you are. Don;t always agree with you but still appreciate your point of view as it give me adifferent angle on stuff. and regularly gets me laughing. Keep it up 😁👍
I can appreciate having eight variations of the same device, but you have an excellent point with how Anbernic has basically spent an entire year making variations on the same thing. In an ideal scenario this would be a ploy to keep them in the limelight while they research the next chip and form-factor iteration in the background, but i have a hard time believing that they have the spare resources to spend an entire year on a skunkworks project at the same time as releasing and supporting all these variant devices. Maybe if/when they finally move on from the H700 someone can make a video talking about the 2024 XX line in its entirety, pointing out the little variations and ways that each one kinda aims for a slightly different niche. But until then it's like, "oh hey, now you can have this chipset in a newer form factor" and the rest of the review is more of the same. :/
i can see the argument in the cube section for sure. and definitely, it'd be better if they didnt vomit new ones out at this pace. but then again, i do feel like the variety and form factor options trump that bit and i also feel like the 556/cube (normal)/406v, with the 406m/p coming out soon is a good enough balance though, i also feel like if I had it the other way I wouldn't be wishing 'oh i wish we had more form factors'', so i can see why my argument can fall flat there too
I get it, that everyone is fed up with the XX-devices. I only have the plus and I was waiting for the 1:1 version for months. I don't need the others, only this one.
That's what I'm thinking. Though I'm not sure if it's enough better than my SD6G1 8" tablet and Gamesir G8+ to justify the hassle of selling the setup I have now.
Guessing the price of the Odin2 Portal is the most interesting when combining other device selling in China. As I got my Odin2 Max at USD300 as Odin 1 supporter, and that was a surprise a few years back on the price. I have left message on several youtube channel that, price may be interesting for they still use 8Gen2 as other tablet in China using 8Gen3 start at around USD399.
The Cardinal Snapping has been fixed with both MuOS and GammaOS on the T820 and H-700 Handhelds. Outside of an updated RG351P with the H-700 chipset there's nothing else they can do with the H-700 chipset. Also Anbernic has been picking a chipset and launching different Handhelds for that chipset since the RK3326. Lastly many people have wanted a RGB30 like Handheld with better Build Quality. The RG-CUBE XX gives us this option.
Pride, the cardinal snapping has not been fixed on stock OS. And GammaOS hasn't launched yet on the T820 devices - the only fix right now is to completely reset your device and only apply that patch.
StockOS probably however MuOS, Knulli, and GammaOS have fixed this issue. Also Anbernic fixed the Cardinal Snapping on the StockOS of the RG406V I can't speak for the RG556 and RG-CUBE on the StockOS.
I am a stock OS user, not interested in immediately "fixing" a brand new handheld. For customers like me, who expects companies to release properly working devices before taking everyone's money, this issue is not yet resolved. 🍻
Interesting that you do PS2 on the Ally. I find it much more enjoyable on Android and even the performance is sometimes better (which makes no sense, I know). See Shadow of the Colossus for example. The only systems I emulate on the Ally are Switch and PS3.
The issue with your argument against "it's great to have options" is that releasing similar devices take up a LOT less resources than brand new ones. And these are good form factors they can re-use and work off of in the future. Just like the Cube. They re-used basically the same molds, re-used the chipset they were familiar with, so it probably took a lot less time to develop. And these devices selling well means more money to expand their team.
Not to mention a HUGE point: CFW support If every new form factor came with a different chip, MuOS wouldn't have this much attention. It wouldn't be this easy to support many different devices like they do. AND Anbernic can buy chips in bulk which make them cheaper, too.
I'd like to see them use the builds that the new Retroid devices are using (because they're most definitely not the same company, honest) the optional Linux build... and then us Odin 2 users can finally get Linux running on them!
Do we really need another Android ARM handheld? I wish this came equipped with Windows (or preferably Linux) and with a low-end Lunar Lake CPU or a N305 for non-graphically intensive games by 2024 standards. Would be great for PSN/PS5 and Steam RemotePlay.
Mmm depends. I’m willing to think your talking about the diagonal size of your phone at a bigger aspect ratio than 16:9? Of which in comparison to mine (same 6.5 inch diagonal size) when viewing 16:9 content is 5.5 inches. I don’t think the portal will be that big tho, comparing the screen to the switch oled it seems to be only really slightly wider as a whole.
These handheld companies are worse than cellphone companies. Constantly coming out with newer iterations of their product, every year never being able to catch up. Not for nothing but that’s the reason why I still have an iPhone XR
I returned my ayaneo flip over a month ago and after way too much back and forth I had to dispute the original charge through my bank, ayaneos customer service is absolute dogwater, never again
I respectfully disagree with your position that we have too many XX handhelds. Other commenters under this video have done a far better job of explaining why the pro-XX pro-H700 enthusiasts are happy about Anbernic's continued building around that platform, so I'll keep my comments brief. Well, brief by my standards... I'm one of those XX enthusiasts who approves of what Anbernic is doing because I really like my RG35XX-SP. I can't imagine they'd have ever made the SP if they didn't already have the hardware and software more or less ready to go from prior releases. By building around common building blocks it allows Anbernic to offer handhelds they couldn't otherwise justify manufacturing. A 1:1 enthusiast who can't swing an OG Cube or Unicorn, or has no desire for newer systems, doesn't deserve to be stuck with Powkiddy crap or Boyhom mediocrity. Until the CubeXX that's pretty much exactly what they were stuck with. Now they have an actual good alternative. You look at every XX iteration since the H and they've all been aimed at filling niches that are hard to justify filling as a manufacturer if they don't have other related handhelds to share and subsidise the development cost. I got my flippy boy. Others got big screens (the 40XXs) for a reasonable price. It may be a boring thing for the man that has to catch them all like Pokemon; but, for a lot of us who just want, or only can afford, one or two this is wonderful. Instead of needing to settle, we can get one that has the perfect form factor to spark joy. That's really what this hobby is all about, right? Joy?

There's definitely more space in the market for clamshell/flip devices, I wonder why they aren't more popular.
That would imply a company making more than two Handhelds a year. 😏
It's been so frustrating that the Retroid Flip released 18 months ago and we haven't had a GC/PS2 capable clamshell since.

They aren’t more popular cause hinges keep breaking.
@ScrubsWasTaken weirdly enough Powkiddy is capable of producing hinges that keep themselves together. Since years.
