PS5 has more impressive graphics and a few exclusive titles. Steamdeck has Linux, multiple compatible game/app stores, fantastic emulation, portability, undocked mode, desktop mode, a company which still often cares about ethics, the ability to run almost every game ever made, and an OS which empowers the user and respects their rights instead of a locked down proprietary OS designed to restrict the user. I know which one I'd pick... and it's not the one with better graphics.
At this point, I'm just done giving Sony my money. I'd much rather be a customer of Valve's. Plus, my OLED steam deck makes games look amazing even at lower graphics settings.
Just bought Armored Core 6 and Elden Ring, both run around 45 FPS and with the OLED screen honestly makes playing so enjoyable on the go. Amazing technology
I totally understand you. PS4 was my last PS console. I kept holding out and hoping PS5 would finally show me some must have games, but nope. Plus Sony has been putting their games on PC, sure it's not right away, but that still hurts the console in the long run. I ended up buying a Legion Go, and love it.
for us that started with consoles and gaming handhelds of the 90s to 2000s now adults always grinding through life, careers, travels etc. do not have time for console gaming (unless you’re a content gaming creator), so having to see the PC handheld thrive is truly awesome, cause it helps us old heads the convenience to game again anywhere at anytime. from retro to modern AAA, it’s all there
100%. I recently moved back to Japan from the US, and I ended up purchasing a Steam Deck out here instead of a PS5; it's been a perfect companion for my busy life. Not to mention, Steam has such a massive backlog of games spanning multiple geenrations, whereas companies like Nintendo are busy suing everyone in sight without offering a solution to play their own back catalog of games offline. The Steam Deck has also brought this 90s kid's joy for gaming back!
I don't understand how people always say they don't have time for console gaming. I work 12-14 hour days every day, I'm in the process of starting a company, and I have a wife and two kids. I can still find time to play my ps5.
The deck is basically a handheld PC. That alone makes it so much better than the ps5. Less restriction, bigger library of games, free multiplayer and you can emulate tons of games. I can also use my deck as a pc. Hook a keyboard and mouse, I can use it for productive purposes. I ran Autocad 2023, Inventor fusion, fusion 360 and even blender on it. Plus, it's portable. I can play my games natively while laying in my bed. I don't need an overpriced accessory just to stream games for that portability. The ps5 exclusives hardly even matter for me anymore. Steam is far more consumer friendly than PSN and Sony.
As someone who owns both, I spend about 90% of my time gaming on the Deck, 3% on my PS5, 4% on my 3080 and 3% on my Switch. (These are rough guesses, 😂).
as someone who used both, i finally went back to ps5.. Not all games run at good framerates/quality. Now, I mainly use steam deck for chiaki and smaller arcade titles.
The steamdeck reminds me of my time in school with a psp, being able to browse the web and download crap directly and using homebrew to manage all my files, well now I can do the same again with my steamdeck, I just connect it to a thunderbolt docking station and I can do my PC stuff, the change it back to console mode to keep playing on the sofa, it's amazing
the steamdeck changed gaming for me entirely. Got me into emulation, got me playing games again, got me tinkering. I ended up trading it up for the ally z1x but for the price it cannot be beat. I look forward to trading up my ally for a deck2
I have The steam deck and I have the rog Ally z1e ...and prior to that all my mobile gaming was done via switch games pass or Ps remote play on a smart phone with backbone.now the Ally houses all my fav switch games ..no lie the Ally is a beast of a device with the ability to play almost every console generation. And as much as I love my deck the windows gaming experience hasn't been as bad as everyone was making out to be...I love these handhelds I can only imagine the benefits of what the next generation chips for these devices will do...I do hope Sony gets the dead ass vio team to stop making laptops and make a compatible handheld 😂
@@urboijash3955 I recently got the ROG Ally X and installed Bazzite to get me to SteamOS-like experience. Minus the OLED colors and touchpads (and better battery life at lower wattages), it's essentially a Steam Deck Pro. Both devices are fantastic imo.
I got a Steam Deck in 2023 and it’s brought me back into gaming. I know everyone says this but it’s just what it does. I’d like to upgrade to an OLED so if you’re looking to buy one used for less in very good condition HMU.
I had to choose between a ps5 or a steam deck this generation. I chose the steam deck snd have no regrets. Aside from Final Fantasy 16 running like garbage on my deck, i have no interest in buying a PS5 outside of playing Astro Bot.
Yes there are definitely concessions with the Deck and I understand people who don't like it because of that. But for less demanding gamers who are happy with the existing library of 1000's of games... It's for them.
For some people, raw performance is the only measure of what makes a system "better". I think the Steam Deck, and the entire history of gaming consoles since the 80s proves that theory wrong. NES beat the Master System in spite of the Master System being able to display way more colors. Gameboy beat the Game Gear in spite of the Game Gear being more powerful with a color LCD display. PS2 beat the XBox and Gamecube in spite of it being the weakest of the three systems. The NIntendo Switch has massively outsold the PS4 and the Xbox One in spite of it being much much weaker than those two systems. Of course the Steam Deck hasn't sold nearly as much as the Switch, but Valve is still working on establishing their hardware manufacturing and supply channels. They're only just now getting them to Australia. They still don't cover Latin America. Brazil is clamoring for the Deck. However Steam overall as a gaming platform has monthly active users roughly equivalent to Playstation, XBox, and Nintendo combined. It's only going to get bigger and better. They're already talking about the Steam Deck 2, and they seem to be using the same design philosophy as they did with the first one. Efficiency is more important than raw power. Higher resolution displays aren't needed in such a small screen. Just a carefully balanced system, rather than "bigger number better".
The PC has always been the exception of the raw performance issue. Because always my friends would get that new console, and be on their computer all day regardless. The steamdeck is right there in between and it makes me care so much less about that power because it's just so interesting.
@@jesusbarrera6916 It seemed more apt, but the Switch also outsells the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S if that helps. That also widens the performance gap even more.
Ok. Nes beat the master system because Nintendo had the developers on lock, along with many retailers. Nintendo said, you can't make games for us, and then make that same game for our competition, if you do so then you can't sell games on our system. I know that sounds odd, but back then, that would be the death of many Japanese developers since Nintendo had most of their home market on lockdown. Also, Nintendo told retailers in other markets, if they want to sell the Nes, then they can't sell Sega master systems. Nintendo played real dirty back in the days.
I only use my PS5 for games that I see fit now (such as silent hill 2 and gta6 depending on release). The deck has changed my gaming lifestyle entirely, especially now that most games are optimised towards it.
Two reasons, main is you don't have subscription to play online, second it is portable. Amazing is that that any console player can use without hassle, but if you want more from device you can just use this machine like any other PC.
Pros : Portable and cheaper games. Cons: compromised gaming experience. If you are used to graphic fidelity and optimization on console, steam deck ain't for you. As a steam deck owner, there are so many facts wrongly portrayed in this video to give steam deck an edge over new gen consoles, there are so many compromises with steam deck. I also own an xreal, doesn't have hdr, 200inch of 1080p with edge cropped, no support to run steam big show.... don't get me started, There are so many new unreal engine games that is totally unplayable on steam deck, where im from, I can get refurbished Xbox series s for 180$, it can play latest gen games, acquiring games via subscription is cheap, give it a try. I'm the kind of user that goes an extra mile to optimize settings to squeeze out every last performance I can get on steam deck, but at times it can't even outperform ps4.
thank goddess i have been buying games on steam for years. You dont need a console anymore. I just permanently docked my ally rog to my TV and it can do everything i ever need
I think you're right about *most people* not really caring about resolution that much. My partner can't even recognize the difference between 1080p and 4k on our TV, so plugging in the Deck and playing at an upscaled 720 is fine for them, and for me, playing it handheld at an extremely stable, locked framerate is also totally acceptable. If I want high resolution and high framerate...well, that's why I have a desktop. But the "totally good enough at just about everything" nature of the Deck means that it's been a huge hit in our house. Maybe soon partner will get their own so I can have mine back, haha.
Honestly you are right the steam deck is way better then a ps5 because of what it can do ,it can run older pc , console and handheld games from Magnabox and atari all the way up to modern games which is way more impressive plus its portable. The only issue i have with the steam deck and most of these pc handhelds are battery life if you play more demanding games but still its amazing to see 9th gen games on a portable device. I got to say i recently subbed to you and im glad UA-cam recommend you to me
Yeah, the battery situation is definitely not ideal. It's not bad, but if you leave it plugged in all the time it'll try to keep the battery full and cause damage. It should reduce the charge range it uses, to make the battery last longer in terms of years. Like, a Switch can stay plugged in all the time and still work fine years later, but that'll kill a Steamdeck. So I hope they'll fix that.
@@ToyKeeper that's incorrect. the deck has a hardware function where it'll stop charging before hitting 100%, it lets the battery go down a bit before charging again. Many have tested leaving it plugged in for extended periods with no damage at all.
I bought one of these on eBay for less than I paid for my Switch OLED. I love living in a world where I can buy a miniature secondary gaming PC for $300. Being able to play Just Cause 2 (the GOAT open world game) at max settings on the go is so, so sweet. I love the Switch, but the games tend to be quite expensive and it's nowhere near as customizable without deep-diving into mods.
@@Minmataro718personally, as someone who works Home Office full time and with a enterprise laptop, I prefer staying away from my desk and relaxing on my couch.
Gaming in 2024 is about playing games the way you want to play them. I spent decades tied to my desk playing PC games and I never minded or resented it. But now that I'm older, I don't like to sit at my desk so much; I want to sit on my couch in my living room or in my bed next to my wife. I have a powerful gaming PC, but I'd rather play Cyberpunk on Low at 30FPS on my Deck than 165Fps Ultra on my desktop, because it's just nicer to be able to sit and play wherever I want, not to mention suspend whenever necessary if my kids need me or whatever.
The Steamdeck is the best, hands down, device if you don't have anything for gaming. You just can't go wrong with it. I was changing consoles constantly and currently am content with ps4 slim and Steamdeck. Games dirt cheap for the ps4 and Steamdeck fills the PC needs and emulates everything else. I am only waiting on Anbernic to announce RG Cube XX V lol
Steam deck is a superior gaming device because: 1. Its mobile 2. It has its own screen so u dont need to share a TV with family. 3. Has access to 10k+ PC games and emulators. 4. Has the benefit of PC game discounts across the internet. 5. Can be used as a desktop linux computer with a keyboard, mouse and other peripherals.
Gave up gaming back in the late 90's to start a family, missed out on all the fun...🥺...for my 50th birthday, I was gifted the steam deck! After little modifications (2 TB internal memory with all my retro emulation games, 1 TB micro SD card for recent stuff). All i can say, holy f**** sh**!!! Im a happy boy! Nothing like spendind lazy sundays just playing games! You are right broham, this handheld is the best! 👍🤘
What i hate the most from Playstation is we had to pay like 6$ EVERY MONTH just to play online, after we bought those expensive 60$ games.. And that also limited to one account, so if we have siblings that want to play online too, they had to pay monthly too, that's greedy af.. PS4 probably would be my last console from sony, we might try just build a PC in living room for gaming..
The problem with PS5 is that you're locked into the PS5 ecosystem. You can't play a ps6 game and I think compatibility with PS4 is weird. I think people don't talk about this factor in PC gaming much. You don't have to subscribe to play online and keep your games forever
@@SPG8989 Yes, but Steam persists more than a single console life. PS5 can't play PS6 games so you'll need to buy a new system, when Steam just gets those games.
you wont be able to play new AAA games in the coming years because steamdeck hardware isnt strong enough you just have to buy steamdeck 2 when it releases@@kylespevak6781
I used to own a Steam Deck, and while I liked it, I found it too heavy for a portable device. It's not that I can't handle heavy things I'm fine with that but for something meant to be portable, it just felt too bulky. I much prefer using my Switch. It's lightweight, and there’s no shortage of great games that work seamlessly without any need for tweaking.
I actually found the deck quite light considering how big it is. You look at it and expect it to be a lot heavier and being bulky doesn't really bother me because I personally don't really game on the go. At most I'll take it to a friend's house. I mainly just take it around the house playing it wherever I feel like
Great video. Really enjoyed that. Perfect review for me personally. My deck should arrive any minute now. Cannot wait. Thanks again for the great review.
It is a cheaper option, both for games and hardware. However, I think a lot of its value comes from the community-mods, shells, game support outside of Steam (like ProtonDB), playtesting, finding solutions to problems, creating control scheme templates, etc. All of this is possible because the Steam Deck is far more open than any other console. The PS5 is a fine console, but only the Deck lets you do whatever you want with it: dual-boot Windows, switch to desktop Linux mode, and use it as a gaming console afterward
To be honest, I had aspirations to do all that stuff but I have very much been a consumer of the Deck and not a reviewer. I haven't modded anything. I set up emulation but haven't touched it. I used desktop mode here and there but I have just played games. And that, I think, is my main reason for it being the best, it gets you playing wherever and whenever.
I was gonna say the same. Sounds like a nitpick but that 800p really seems to make a difference. 720p can look low quality on even a tiny phone screen but 800p on deck screen looks brilliant.
Anyone who owns a steam deck or wants to buy one. Know that you have at minimum another year before there is an announcement for a new one with the recent release of the Steam Deck in Australia 🥳
I really hope I'll be able to afford one soon, preferably the OLED model for a little more future-proofing - it seems too good to be true honestly. my PS4 is struggling heavily (sounds like a jet engine and controllers are broken), so that's not an option anymore, my switch lite seems like a wasted purchase because games are still expensive as heck for some reason (thank you for that, nintendo - releasing old games for prices that are even more expensive than their price 10-20 years ago) and the sticks got *huuge* issues which makes it unplayable as well at this point. I *do* already have a big steam library from 'back in the days' though. from Counter Strike to GTA IV, Resident Evil, Terraria, Red Faction, cod, need for speed, dead space, command and conquer - so many classic and timeless titles - basically a little bit of everything. not to mention the constant extreme sales steam has going on - rivaled by none. I could even play 'PS4 stranded games' like Elden Ring again because my laptop can't handle such games anymore, although I'd probably have to start over (but thats something I'm willing to do if it allows me to play the game again - also with no extra cost for the actual fun endgame after all the grinding, which is the multiplayer. why do they all charge for online now? it's ridiculous) but we can all see how the Steam Deck masterfully handles all of those issues, you don't feel 'excluded' at all anymore because you have access to basically everything of relevance - from addictive indie games, pretty much all Emulation and to Triple A titles. no accessibility issues whatsoever. you can even literally set up gyro aiming for basically any game, creating almost a perfect 'console-like rival' in terms of control schemes compared to mouse and keyboard in FPS games (and you can also of course always just plug in mouse and keyboard anyways) just amazing. Valve at it again, saving us when all of the others in the gaming industry seems to let us down, constant overpriced nostalgia baits and so on. I don't have to pay anything for nostalgia on steam (deck) though. it's already there. it generally feels surreal looking at my steam profile which is over 16 years old at this point. Valve might be going full circle with their hardware from this point on in the gaming industry. Gaben our Lord and Saviour 🤣🤣 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Chiaki4Deck, XbPlay, Moonlight = Powerful PC + PS5 + XBOX in an handheld device. Add emulators to the mix as well and you've got the SteamDeck. It is litterally the best "console" on the market for that reason alone. That and the amazing and optimized SteamOS
@@hidekin Geforce now isn't supported anymore on the latest NVIDIA APP and its days are counted... Eventually it will be 100% dead. That's why I switched over to Apollo (a fork of Sunshine) and it's been a flawless experience on the Deck, even better than GeForce
Dude, I was SO close to buying a PS5 last year, but once I saw that the Steam Deck could emulate PS2, I had to have one. I even sold my Switch to get one and it was the best decision I ever made. Now, I feel like I could play almost anything (including Switch games lol). Thank god I didn't get a PS5. I've seen so many gamers complain about the lack of games on there.
@@frogrocket5000 relatively compared to the amount of PC games though its a big difference. And then if we only count the good games, then PC will always have more
UGH, why do people use this stupid joke? I'm so tired of hearing that. The PS5 has an exclusive, it's Astro Bot, for gods sake. There's a billion games on the PS5. >:(
As a proud owner of a Steam Deck OLED and not a PS5, I agree. I had an LCD model before upgrading to the OLED, and both are amazing, but the OLED is on a whole other level. I love it more than any other gaming device/console I currently and have previously owned. I'm looking forward to whatever Valve does next in a couple more years probably, but until then you can count on me not having any desire to get a PS5. Great coverage on an incredible system, man!
Own a ps5 2070 super pc and a steam deck. I work two jobs ; have a side hustle so I’m rarely home . I do 70% of my gaming 1tb OLED steam deck . You can run the new sparking zero ( low res ) but still runs at 90hz and looks good 🔥
I grew up in the 80ies ,my first console was a nintendo game boy.Since then i have own almost every portable and home console from nintendo, sega and sony.I have always dreamed of the steam deck since the game boy days.As soon as i saw the steam deck i knew it was going to be a huge succes.I have the ps1 ,2,3,and 4 i didnt even buy the Ps5.The portability, user friendlyness, and just awesomeness of the steam deck is unbeleivable.Plus its most of the times ready to go,instead of having to mess around with the settings for 2 hours everytime just to get play a game like with the rog ally.Power is great ,but portability, versatility and ease of use is always a winner and a better choice!!!
Steamdeck can run emulators and fitgirl/dodi repacks if you're into that so its better bang for your buck. Mods are difficult to run though sometimes because of linux, ps5 cant even run mods. Only thing that makes ps5 better is it can run 1440p at 60 fps while steam deck runs 1080p at 40-50fps. Most games get ported to steam eventually. Also ps5 is twice the price of a steam deck.
My problem with SD is bugs and some of them are pretty old. Now picture this, I am playing Yakuza and watching a cutscene, but it's a bit too long so I put it to sleep. The next day I open it up and the sound is crackling, so I have to watch the cutscene to end, find a save point, save the game, exit the game, enter the game and load back in. It happens something like 10% of the time, but it is annoying and persists at least for 2 years now. One thing I love about xbox is it's quick resume feature, so you can have up to 5 games (or more) to be suspended, like on Miyoo Mini. I wish SD had this too. I love SD, but it is flawed like everything else in this world. Great video as always, Adin 👍🏻
Does this happen for other games? If it's just Yakuza, you might need to tinker with some settings. I use sleep/resume with multiple games and emulation with little to no issue. I've had one since launch, and a year or two ago i had an issue that I'd need to power flush my system sometimes because it wouldn't boot out of sleep, but that issue was fixed in a patch long ago
@@demodisc5229not only Yakuza, no. But it happens to some games more often than others. I think I installed some plugin back in 2023 that fixed it, but here it is again after a few updates
Something no one ever mentions - No monthly fees. On PlayStation or Xbox you basically NEED to pay a fee every month or year to use that console online for the internet you already pay for. I personally ditched my Xbox Series X for a Steam Deck, because I can play all the same games, it's portable, and I don't have to pay a monthly fee to Valve to use my Steam Deck online. So money and value wise, you can't beat the Steam Deck. Chef's kiss on an already near-perfect device, running free open-source and privacy minded Linux Operating System.
I had seen steam deck videos here and there and I always knocked it off as some kind of gimmick. It was only a couple months back that I started looking into it more because I barely got time to play on my PC or PS5, I tried all kinds of things streaming to my phone whenever I got time and using a controller with it and stuff. Once I finally got it I was able to play games a lot more than I could before, it's just way too convenient! Eventually I ended up selling everything else and just keeping my steam deck. Hooked it up to a monitor and typing on it right now lol.
It’s not true that the Z1 Rog ally doesn’t come close to the performance of the steam deck. It’s actually better in performance. Especially if you put Bazzite OS on it. Don’t misinform people. Watch videos comparing raw performance of both.
You’re right. Sorry Adin but I’ve got the steam deck and both the z1 and z1 extreme. The extreme with windows and the z1 base with bazzite on it. The base z1 outperforms the steam deck in every single game I’ve loaded on it. Also it’s snappier and offers more than the steam deck in terms of what you can do in the os. And also the games are in an higher resolution and graphic details but still having more fps and less latency on the ally.
I just got a steam deck and I’m loving it. I’m also a console gamer, primarily PlayStation consoles, and while I love PlayStation, I can see myself switching to more of a pc/steam deck person for two main reasons. 1, Sony is starting to bring all their exclusives over to pc and 2, if the ps5 pro price is an indication of the ps6 price in a few years, I’d rather spend that money on the next steam deck and/or minor upgrades for my windows pc.
I just tried the Viture XR Pro on my Steam Deck, it's awesome though I couldn't justify the cost so I think I will return it. But that Micro OLED was so beautiful that I am even thinking about trading my Steam Deck LCD with the OLED Steam Deck, but Value ha Deck 2 coming, I will just wait. I recently moved to X1 as my main PC and gaming machine, it's Windows 11, sucks in hibernation, but I get to play LoL and Fortnite. However, once I tried the Viture XR Pro on my Deck, I just can't stop going back to my Deck again. The Deck's ergonomics and sleep mode are just unbeatable.
If I could only choose one, I'd choose the ps5. Playing on a 4k OLED screen is just a much better experience. The epicness of Final Fantasy XVI for example is something that MUST be experienced on a large screen. I do live alone so that means the TV is always available to me. The steam deck is great too, I like it for indie games and emulation. Or games that look weird, like they are not designed for a larger TV size(most jRPGs or visual-novel type games). I can also remote play from the ps5, so having both is probably best.
Agreed. Don't think the Steamdeck would replace my PS5 or desktop PC. Portability isn't something I strongly value, however I appreciate that is a big consideration for other people. And the Steamdeck is too weak performance wise, imo, to use docked and plugged into a large 4K display. So which is best ultimately comes down to an individual's personal needs & circumstances. The actual tech isn't the deciding factor.
The steam decks ergonomics are amazing. Ive always hated asymmetrical joysticks. I really hope valve doesn't change the layout with the sticks and buttons at the top
Love my Steam Deck, but I just don't pick it up as much as I used to when I have a fully functional computer 50 feet away with the GeForce RTX graphics card, lots of ram, lots of hard drive space, and every single game plays (no Steam Deck incompatibilities to worry about). Another thing that throws me slightly off, just like the desktop version, is every time I load Steam up, it's gotta do like 20 updates for all the games I got. Like, man. I just updated that game yesterday and it needs another update today?? I know it's not even in the same league, but I find myself grabbing the Anbernic RG35XX-H more often for some quick gaming sessions. I prefer retro games over current gen stuff, and there's no updates needed to sit through before playing my games. Plus it fits better in the pocket to carry around. I don't walk around with a backpack like some nerds do. I like to be as minimalist as possible when venturing out of my dark and frigid dungeon.
It's an Amazing Device of Technology!!! I owned mine almost a month and i din't regret it that i bought it!! (OLED version) One of the best machines that i own from the era of Amastrad CPC 6128 & Commodore Amiga 1200 AGA!!! 😊😉
I have a Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and PS5. If i had to choose just one it would be PS5 hands down. My second option would be the ROG ALLY. It’s way more versatile and run my games way better than the Deck. However if you’re into portable gaming, mostly indie stuff I think the winner would be the Steam Deck.
And a Desktop Gaming PC is better than both. 🙂 Had a Steamdeck Oled for about a month, sold it because I just wanted to go back to playing games with maxed out graphics and high frame rates on a 55" Oled screen with 7.1 surround sound. Granted its lot more expensive up front but boy do you get your moneys worth out of it. My PC Builds last 6 to 7 years on average before it becomes necessary to upgrade. I probably will get another high end handheld but thats just because Im bored and need something new to tinker with, the PC is always there no matter what and I consider it a mandatory possession like a TV. I can't even imagine living with a desktop.
just bought the lcd steam deck also have a 3ds xl on the way. I already have the ps5 and switch. I enjoy having all the things so I don't really bother asking which is best since I'm happy with all of the things.
IMO if you don't own either system, the steam deck is a great choice. It's cheaper. But you should also consider, most people who bought a ps5 (including myself) is upgrading from a ps4. Being able to play all games we already own on ps4 to the ps5. I have digital games and most especially physical discs. I don't play much outside the house, so ps5 and pc is good enough for me. Steam deck too big for me and I do have the rg556 to past time outside.
I like the steamdeck but I won’t replace my PS5 with it because I love the PS library otherwise I am using the Odin 2. If the steamdeck goes on sale I would consider.
My Steam deck has been the main gaming device since i bought it and i feel that the main reason is the ease of use and the sleep and resume are bangers for busy adults. Very complete device and if the OLED is better should be a no brainer for people looking for a gaming device.
I use the Steameck a lot more than my PS5, but I never use it docked. The graphics get really bad on a big screen, but it’s the only handheld you need. Now I just hope Steam will make Steam PC.
Personally I never found the Steam Deck being particularly relevant as a TV-console. Because ultimately it's a companion device to a gaming desktop... People often hate PCs for being expensive, but you can literally get old i7 office PCs for around 100$, add an RX6600 (200$) and you will get a far superior TV-experience compared to going the route with docks and stuff (which still cost money)
While true, it comes at a cost of convenience and increased power consumption which isn't an issue to me but something many seriously consider. I have an old i7-4790 I use on my living room tv but still end up docking my Deck pretty frequently. One of my favorite features is the ability to remote play my PlayStation in any room without having to move stuff around It has its place but you are not wrong.
they serve very different purposes. I don't really think it's a very fair comparison to make. If you didn't want to game on a couch and travel alot then the steam deck is going to make more sense than a PS5. The PS5 will do couch gaming and media better than the steam deck does.
Nobody is taking about that amazing RPG effect and clear white shell?? THATS SO COOL! How did you get your Steam Deck to do that? I would love to customize mine like that when I get it. I hope you see this comment. Your Steam Deck is so cool! 🥹 EDTO: saw your other reply to someone who asked similar. I’m definitely getting that backplate in the future
For me steamdeck is a handheld I always dreamt about. Ergonomic, optimalization, beautiful oled screen and on the top of this - console-like experience on the portable linux computer. Steam OS is such a treat. Plus all community around it. i personally have steam app on my phone and all the shopping and adding to wishlist - Im using my phone for that. Give it a try. Chears
The cool thing about the steam deck (or a PC) is that if you get a new device that is x86 you will still get to play your games vs PlayStation. Like for instance ps3 games are not playable on ps4/5 unless they ported it to the newer systems. But your games from that same time frame that are for a PC will play on a steamdeck. Also, if you are into online games, you don't have to pay for online play on a steamdeck/PC (the caveat is that a lot of online games aren't compatible with steamdeck because of anticheat.) Lastly, there are 3rd party stores like humble, greenman gaming and others that sell steam games (as well as gog and others that sell non-steam games) so you are not locked into one game store like on the PS. The PS5 has a lot of pros too though.
Ohhhh absolutely the price of the PS5 Pro forced me to get a Steam deck OLED and I'm loving it!!!!! I'm just going to keep the PS5 slim and Xbox series X but the Steam deck shocked me
I honestly feel the world in general has gotten so spoiled with "perfect tech" that we sometimes lose site of the enjoyment of actually using the tech!
Might be a weird question but can it be used for work as well? Since it's dockable, add two screens and a kb and mouse ? I guess Linux is the limitation but for most it jobs thats fine.
yes, steamOS is immutale and for now ootb you can only install from flatpak(the store thing), with immutable/container like package managers(nix, distrobox) yes you can get much more for work, for now tho steamOS not the best for that, perhaps.
I’m a 44 year old husband and father of an 8 year old. Trying to convince my wife (“but you have a first generation switch and it’s still working!”) that a steamdeck is a good purchase has been quite the battle.
2.4ghz controller PSA: if your controller keeps disconnecting, the dongle might be receiving interference from the dock's USB 3.0 port. Just plug a USB 2.0 hub ($4) into the dock and plug your controller dongles into that. This was a cheap fix to a huge headache for me.
The steam deck and ps5 are both great at their own things. The ps5 is a modern triple a gaming beast. The steam deck, while it can play most modern triple a games, it isn't as good at it. The steam deck really shines at ps4 and older games, and emulation. It is also, by far, the most customisable device I've ever owned. I love the fact that I can watch UA-cam on it, switch over to playing fallout 4, or the forest or something. When I get bored of that, I can play some 1985 super mario bros, or some ps2 need for speed most wanted. This thing offers so much more than the ps5, but the ps5 shines in the steam decks weaknesses.
I swear, steam deck is the black berry of handheld gaming. Best thing it's good for is emulation. But now in a market oversaturated with more powerful windows and android variants that can play more games or the same amount of games, steam is really gonna have to work hard on their next iteration. More game support.
I built my first pc back in 2020 and since then I've been seeing more plus of it over a traditional console (been with PS since PS1). With PC I could say no to resolution just to bump up the framerate performance. I have complete control over my saves and online play is completely free. PS is just simply pushing all their exclusive games to pc (Spider-Man 2 literally got announced for pc the day this video came out). Add in the fact that the steam deck could do literally more than the portal albeit being +$200 more, that premium price is well worth it. My future of getting the PS6 is questionable as I got the PS5 at launch and was planning to transition over to all digital (with some exceptions) with that console so when the PS6 comes out I don't have to scramble to find my PS5 discs in my house. One of the things I like as well for the PC is just the seem less upgradability and not having to worry about compatibility. Remove an old part for a stronger part really. A PC game from the early 2000s will most likely work today. Console's are only limited to what the company of it gives in compatibility. I am not a fan of subscriptions and sure people could say "oh well the copy you just bought, yeah you don't really own it" Ok sure, but if i put that pc game on an external drive, is the company gonna go to my house and say "hey we need that game back" No. The steam deck and the pc world is very flexible in how they run things. Valve really hit the mark on this one.
The docking experience with my Steam Deck was awful with my LG OLED and emulation management felt clunky. It also felt too bulky to be used handheld. I ended up selling it, along with my numerous number of Chinese emulation handhelds and bought a PS5 slim and an Odin 2. For me this setup ticks all boxes. Having access to a huge physical and/or digital library of games on the large living room OLED, and the amazing Odin 2 for portability is perfect. You could also throw in a PlayStation Portal which can now be used away from home.
As a PS5 and Steam Deck Oled owner I can honestly say the Steam Deck is not better than PS5 if you want to play new games BUT it is an excellent companion for games that do not run well on PS5 with an unlocked frame rate, for example, Talos Principle is a mess on PS5 but on Steam Deck you have far more control over the frame rate so is a much smoother experience on the deck. Of course there is the topic of emulation too which honestly the Deck is god tier for that IMO, but if you want to play new games and not be stuck at 30 fps and 1 hour battery that is where PS5 comes in. But if you need granular control of the frame rate for odd games here and there plus emulation done right that is where the Steam Deck shines. Tldr; You should get both.
I really like the steam deck but I bought the switch because of the portability, price and battery. And the joycons are basically two controllers that can be also one controller. But if you are alone person steamdeck is great(also steamdeck is not sold in my country so I bought the switch.)
Used the Steam Deck for half year and absolutely enjoy the steamos games & emulation for some old games, the downside is the anticheat thing. So just got my ps 5 during the Amazon prime day and start play spiderman and the rise of ronin on the ps5 seem all good. And ps5 contoller is a big surprise. Both machines are good and really depends on the games you want to play. PS offer better experience while connecting to the monitor or tv and can play the aniti games like fc25. Steamdeck offer more portable experience play and go. For me I will keep both for a while.
I have a ps5, gaming laptop, switch and a steam deck. I play the steam deck WAY more. Its just so much easier to grab the steam deck and play what I want. I also dual boot windows and the performance is good there too, so Linux isnt the main reason for the better performance. But all the games can work on SteamOS if you do a little tinkering.
i agree. i don't have the deck, but if i did, I'd play most of my games on the deck instead of my pc. i only play one multiplayer game and that's counter strike. rest of my games would be perfect for deck.
If you have a gaming PC to accompany it then the graphics issue goes out the window too since in home streaming has gotten so much better over time.
Although if PlayStation made a portable console again. I'd probably buy that too especially if it has great jrpgs.
Yes I would love another oled handheld from Sony that can ACTUALLY play games unlike the piece of shit portal
@@Atomic-Purple-Guyas long as it is supported 😅.. PS vita was such a disappointment for the lack of support and games it had..
yeah i like that it gives you the freedom to just use it as a regular pc, I do a bit of music production, programming and video editing on it
At this point, I'm just done giving Sony my money.
They still haven't given us Halflife 3. Are they waiting for Neurolink gaming so we can all be Gordon or something?
You're missing out. Astro Bot is the best game I've played in a good long while.
+1 just recently got an OLED. Best decision so far. I can play anywhere and anytime especially the old ones. Love this device from Valve.
for us that started with consoles and gaming handhelds of the 90s to 2000s
now adults always grinding through life, careers, travels etc.
do not have time for console gaming (unless you’re a content gaming creator), so having to see the PC handheld thrive is truly awesome, cause it helps us old heads the convenience to game again anywhere at anytime. from retro to modern AAA, it’s all there
@@jaelin_javelin I couldn’t help but laugh on the “meanwhile nintendo” part 🤣
This! 💪
I don't understand how people always say they don't have time for console gaming. I work 12-14 hour days every day, I'm in the process of starting a company, and I have a wife and two kids. I can still find time to play my ps5.
I have nothing but regrets for buying my ps5 haha
How is the blender performance of Steam Deck? I'm not expecting much.
Do you dual boot windows? Wine? How did you get Autodesk programs to run?
It's not "basically" a handheld PC. It is a handheld PC.
The Deck is garbage
The deck is VERY restrictive of what games you can play. Most of my library doesnt work on the thing, making it simply a paperweight/ffxiv machine
As someone who owns both, I spend about 90% of my time gaming on the Deck, 3% on my PS5, 4% on my 3080 and 3% on my Switch. (These are rough guesses, 😂).
No those are exact stats I'm sure haha
Don't blame ya

@@coolhawk2003 Yeah, the convenience factor is a BIG win!

as someone who used both, i finally went back to ps5..

I had the steam deck LCD 512 and upgraded to the ally X. Took me only 1 week to return it and upgrade to the Steam deck OLED instead 😅

I love how people compare the 2017 portable to the 2013 consoles...
How much didn he WiiU sold, again?
@@jesusbarrera6916 It seemed more apt, but the Switch also outsells the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S if that helps. That also widens the performance gap even more.
@The8bitbeard there is no apt. it's a portable console released within its own timeframe
It does not compete against any generation
I think silent hill2 is or will be soon, "ready for the deck"
Two reasons, main is you don't have subscription to play online, second it is portable. Amazing is that that any console player can use without hassle, but if you want more from device you can just use this machine like any other PC.
Pros : Portable and cheaper games.
Cons: compromised gaming experience. If you are used to graphic fidelity and optimization on console, steam deck ain't for you.
As a steam deck owner, there are so many facts wrongly portrayed in this video to give steam deck an edge over new gen consoles, there are so many compromises with steam deck.
I also own an xreal, doesn't have hdr, 200inch of 1080p with edge cropped, no support to run steam big show.... don't get me started,
There are so many new unreal engine games that is totally unplayable on steam deck, where im from, I can get refurbished Xbox series s for 180$, it can play latest gen games, acquiring games via subscription is cheap, give it a try.
Which one do you own? The more powerful is definitely the one I would go for.
I can still difference on a switch then on my Xbox series X
Honestly you are right the steam deck is way better then a ps5 because of what it can do ,it can run older pc , console and handheld games from
Magnabox and atari all the way up to modern games which is way more impressive plus its portable.
Have both. Love both. They compliment each other.

Steam deck is a superior gaming device because:
1. Its mobile
2. It has its own screen so u dont need to share a TV with family.
3. Has access to 10k+ PC games and emulators.
4. Has the benefit of PC game discounts across the internet.
5. Can be used as a desktop linux computer with a keyboard, mouse and other peripherals.
yea but the graphics suck, having to play in 40 fps just to save battery and lower graphics settings, no thanks, plus tiny 7 inch screen, yukk!
My favorite thing about the steam deck is how it runs many ps3 titles effortlessly. This thing is also an indie gamers dream lol

You're locked into the steam ecosystem on the STEAM deck. Silly comparison

It's lightweight, and there’s no shortage of great games that work seamlessly without any need for tweaking.
Oh that's interesting. Yes I do believe alot of people will be favourable to the Switch.
@@adinwalls Hey thanks for the reply and i think the deck is a much better system but having a light system is fun for long gaming sessions.
I actually found the deck quite light considering how big it is. You look at it and expect it to be a lot heavier and being bulky doesn't really bother me because I personally don't really game on the go. At most I'll take it to a friend's house. I mainly just take it around the house playing it wherever I feel like
Is it a buy if I only want to play it docked to a tv?

No worries man, literally had people like you when making this.
If I could only have one console it would without a doubt be a steam deck. Can’t wait to get the oled one day
As a ps5 owner I resent this statement however I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on a steamed k to Try it out. Looks real cool.
Isn't the deck 800p ? I think it is. Great video for a great device 🙏🥰
I think it might technically be 800p thank you!
Rumor is the next one will be 900p, and still with a 16:10 display. A very reasonable and well-thought-out choice I think.
I own a gaming PC, steam Deck and two ps5’s. Since I purchased my Steam Deck, this had dominated my gaming time.
That's definitely the prevailing feedback I'm getting. A few prefer the PS5.
I could even play 'PS4 stranded games' like Elden Ring again because my laptop can't handle such games anymore, although I'd probably have to start over (but thats something I'm willing to do if it allows me to play the game again - also with no extra cost for the actual fun endgame after all the grinding, which is the multiplayer. why do they all charge for online now? it's ridiculous)
but we can all see how the Steam Deck masterfully handles all of those issues, you don't feel 'excluded' at all anymore because you have access to basically everything of relevance - from addictive indie games, pretty much all Emulation and to Triple A titles. no accessibility issues whatsoever.
you can even literally set up gyro aiming for basically any game, creating almost a perfect 'console-like rival' in terms of control schemes compared to mouse and keyboard in FPS games (and you can also of course always just plug in mouse and keyboard anyways)
just amazing.

Do you have to wear the XR glasses above your regular glasses?
Steamdeck can run emulators and fitgirl/dodi repacks if you're into that so its better bang for your buck. Mods are difficult to run though sometimes because of linux, ps5 cant even run mods. Only thing that makes ps5 better is it can run 1440p at 60 fps while steam deck runs 1080p at 40-50fps. Most games get ported to steam eventually. Also ps5 is twice the price of a steam deck.
Which is why I think the next Xbox should be a Steamdeck competitor, with a eGPU on a dock for extra power when plugged in.
Umm, I think your camera has a focus issue. It seems to get out of focus for a short while a lot.
Apart from that, great video!
I was today’s years old when I learned TDP actually stood for “Totally DooDoo Poop” Adin Walls, circa Oct. 18th, 2024. Legend
Haha. I'm all about the quality info.
I want the same build how’d you get that rgb !? Awesome video man I love my deck
Jsaux backplate
@@adinwalls thank you so much, was it hard to setup?
I don't use it nearly enough as I am home most of the time and have a 4090 rtx setup - but man is it nice to have when going on the road..
Good point. I freaking love my Deck
Yea he’s super wrong and we not even talking about the extreme or the x
You’re right. Sorry Adin but I’ve got the steam deck and both the z1 and z1 extreme. The extreme with windows and the z1 base with bazzite on it. The base z1 outperforms the steam deck in every single game I’ve loaded on it. Also it’s snappier and offers more than the steam deck in terms of what you can do in the os. And also the games are in an higher resolution and graphic details but still having more fps and less latency on the ally.
@@sharpsteel6272 tell them!!!!
@sharpsteel6272 how's the battery life?
Ps5 got this wishlist feature that it gives you notification (not email) that an item now on sale
But is it as awesome 😎
@@adinwalls no 😅
hey playstation also sends email about your wishlist so does xbox. and why are you comparing it with something you don't even own?
I wouldn't hold my breathe for Deck 2, Valve are professionals at taking their time! But I understand the cost issue with the glasses.
4K is over rated
IMO, 4K is pointless. It doesn't look any different from 1440p. I prefer to game at 1080p or 1440p with medium or low settings.
@@ThunderTheYellowJolteon That's objectively false, unless you mean playing on a handheld device/small screen, like the Steamdeck.
My wishlist is constantly growing
I think the steam decks versatile nature and portability and all the different things you can do with the device definitely gives you much more value
(OLED version)
One of the best machines that i own from the era of Amastrad CPC 6128 & Commodore Amiga 1200 AGA!!!
Very true. For someone with no skin in the game, the Steamdeck is probably a better start now in 2024
I like the steamdeck but I won’t replace my PS5 with it because I love the PS library otherwise I am using the Odin 2.
Same. So easy to use.
Im 40 hours into oblivion on my deck i just whip it out on the couch when i get beck from work . ❤. Goodtimes
Sounds great!
One of my favorite features is the ability to remote play my PlayStation in any room without having to move stuff around
It has its place but you are not wrong.
Liked for the "that's what she said"
Hehe it's all about those Office and Friends related Easter eggs.
It's a pretty neat compromise. The switch is at 720p and the steam deck is running games that won't run on switch.
they serve very different purposes. I don't really think it's a very fair comparison to make. If you didn't want to game on a couch and travel alot then the steam deck is going to make more sense than a PS5. The PS5 will do couch gaming and media better than the steam deck does.
PSA: Android is _in all technicality_ a Linux OS (Android is built on the Linux Kernel).
Nobody is taking about that amazing RPG effect and clear white shell?? THATS SO COOL! How did you get your Steam Deck to do that? I would love to customize mine like that when I get it. I hope you see this comment. Your Steam Deck is so cool! 🥹
EDTO: saw your other reply to someone who asked similar.
Chears
Oh I check my wishlist on my phone everyday 😀
I actually made a video for that very purpose haha ua-cam.com/video/Y1NJznpizwc/v-deo.html
Adin, what do you get from the Cube that you do not get from your Odin 2 Mini? 🍻
I loved Blackberry!
Hmmm that’s an interesting take. Streaming from PS5 to the Odin 2 is very appealing.
I love the Steamdeck. It's the perfect bridge between worlds and a fantastic entry to the PC experience.
So just got my ps
5 during the Amazon prime day and start play spiderman and the rise of ronin on the ps5 seem all good.
Literally no reason to compare them. I have both and I'm happy with what each offers. Let's compare this to other high end handhelds.
Plays Amiga perfectly. What more could you want than Sensible Soccer on the move?
Hehe.
So cool. I would love to have one. Love steam aswell
