Cross wrote "Think Of Laura" about Laura Coffin Carter, an 18-year-old student at Denison University in Granville, Ohio who was killed by a stray bullet on April 17, 1982. At the time Cross was dating Paige McNinch, who was Laura's best friend and one of her sorority sisters. He wrote this song to honor Laura's memory. After the song's release it was featured in the popular soap opera "General Hospital" as the love theme for the characters Luke and Laura, who were arguably the most well known of all daytime TV couples. Its use on the show vaulted the song up the charts, and in February 1984 it reached #9 on the US Hot 100 and went to #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, where it stayed for four weeks. Boyz II Men recorded a new version of this song called "Think of Aaliyah (The Aaliyah Song)" in honor of the singer Aaliyah after she died in 2001. This video has been digitally enhanced to HD quality and features audio from the 2019 remaster of Cross' 1983 album “Another Page”
You have NEVER heard ANYONE talk bad about this Man, OR His Music. You PROBABLY NEVER will. His songs are some of the most heartfelt Songs you'll ever hear.
Christopher, you will never know how this song touched our lives. Our beautiful niece just about to graduate high school, a beautiful soul. Not long after this song came out she was killed in an auto accident. We played this awesome song at her funeral, her name was Lora. This was around 86, I think, and we still miss her so much. So I still listen to this song and remember her. You do a wonderful job singing it. Thank you God Bless.
I’m so sorry for your loss, for me this song brings me back to when my oldest son (dice deceased) would run home from school.. he was in first grade, and I’d get a 7/11 big gulp and we’d get on my waterbed and watch General Hospital together, he was in love with Laura and would walk around the house singing that song. I still miss him like it was yesterday. Many blessings to you and your family ♥️🥰
"....a friend to the end...that's the kind of girl she was...." Her spirit still taking our tears away ..what a tribute to this young lady - now with Jesus.
Happy birthday, Laura. I feel a connection to you because my name is Laura and I had the pleasure of meeting Christopher Cross and never really knew the meaning behind the song which he took the time to tell the audience all about minus the graphics so when you think of her and you think of Laura And me laugh, don’t cry because I know I would want it that way, and so would she
1983 I was a 12 years old when this song came out in the radio. Man.. still takes me back to this day. LIFE was so good growing up as a kid back then. Though tragic this song may be lyrically.. the music the notes.. just warms my heart and touches my soul to the day. 2023.

Incredible! I just saw him Tuesday night in Clearwater, Florida, and he also closed with song! His voice was amazing and he is 73 years old!!! So glad we went!
He was supposed to close with this song at his show at Cherokee, North Carolina, 8/10. However, we found out during the show that he was in the ER a few hours earlier and did the whole show on a stool. He was escorted off the stage and the house lights came on. I hope he’s doing better. Still a good show.

He truly is a gift from God; from his soothing voice in his song "Sailing", and then "Against the Wind" my twin sister and I fell in love with; all those years ago. His song " Think Of Laura" was best; with Christopher Cross' peaceful rendition. His sincerity, and the inspiration in that song. Wow. I can't believe no one agreed with your opinion in the year; except me. You are a very insightful man🙏, @robertcyr8364. 🎵🔔💎♥
Laura was a friend of my sister; she was a very sweet person with a big heart & would go out of her way to help anyone if she could. Fly high sweet angel.
Beautiful song. Reminds me of my late wife, Pat. She was a complex person who had love to offer in spades. Temperamental, loving, and kind. I miss her dearly.
How a billion people aren't subscribed to Christopher Cross is crazy to me. I'm 48 and listen to everything from death metal to disco to classical. Cmon people
Absolutely gorgeous song. Takes me back to the late 70s early 80s. Simpler awesome times to be a kid. Christopher Cross is the soundtrack to those more free times. He always makes me smile. Takes you away from life's troubles
Not all people had better times. I loved this song, it brought me to tears. I had tried to take my life a few times. Once after being raped at 15, also when I tried to leave my husband. I listened to this and wondered if anyone would think of me if I left this world. I left my late first husband with my three year old. She saved me. I had to live to protect her. This song still brings me to tears. Rest in Peace Laura, and all the Laura's out there.
This guy is just born to sing, play guitar and give joy to the universe. He sings effortlessly but yet soulful and passionate..a true meaning of a real artist..😊
Loves me some Christopher Cross! He sings like an Angel! He really does. First heard Sailing back in 1980 while in college. I was like whos THIS singer? I had just turned 18. Loved his music ever since! EVERY song! Now I'm 62. He got me through a LOT of late night have to finish by morning art projects man! This man's music is perfect for drawing or working on a project that requires your full concentration. It puts you in a quiet relaxed place that I can't quite fully explain. It just is. It's never distracting. Very cool musician! And I never really knew that this was a true story. It was a really terrible thing that happened to Laura. Hard to wrap my mind around this. But I'm trying to listen to the words and go by and follow what he's saying. She would not want people to be sad about it. It's hard not be sad though, especially when I saw her photo. But the song is truly one of the best I've ever heard emotionally and she must have been a wonderful person to get such a tribute! He sounds incredible!
This song will forever remind me of my beautiful & vibrant aunt Laura! She was the definition of health and wellness but left this world far too soon from pancreatic cancer. With each passing year it gets harder and harder not knowing I could see or talk to her when I’m having a rough day. I am forever thankful that she drew me closer to God and continues to leave an immense impact on my life. My guardian angel💜
My condolences, @kileybrown9431. My sweet Daddy died from pancreatic cancer also. He still is my guardian angel; looking down, just as your sweet Aunt Laura is over you. 😇😇 Blessings that she drew you closer to God are always with you. 🙏 🌹
@rasseruuu373 so true, Iwas in Grade 7 @ Confedetation Park school, taking music, Mr. Cooper taught us about Christopher Cross, Abba, The Carpenters and John Lennon. I cried when I learned what the lyrics were about and that it was from a real person, Laura. The meaning of this song is already known and been stated but for me it makes me think of my first love. We ended things after 3 years and the song just tells me to laugh and smile and appreciate our beautiful relationship instead of being sad and crying about its end. “I know she’d want it that way.” And I truly indeed know she’d want me to be grateful and happy that the love we once shared was a beautiful one
I grew up listening to Christopher Cross. His music has this beautiful haunting melody that will take you to a place you want to stay at. Very beautiful music!!!
I have loved this song since I was 12 years old. Like so many others thinking it was written for General Hospital because it was absolutely perfect for the storyline. As an adult, finding out the true meaning of this song hurt my heart terribly. Laura’s family must feel so honored to have her remembered with this incredible song. She must have been a wonderful person.

This song never fails to bring tears to my eyes ...a very tragic accident... a young lady who was just starting to live and has a great life ahead of her passed away so suddenly. I could only imagine what her parents went through during those very difficult times. Thank you, Sir Christopher Cross for this beautiful song...Laura Coffin Carter will always be remembered.
This song was new when I was a tween...my friend Earl Paul, his beautiful sister Laura came to school briefly in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan at Confederation Park elementary where many of my mates lived. That song was played in kusic appreciation class and everyone was singing to Laura and laughing. It was a great moment of Chris s music and gentle manner in acknowledging Laura's passing Its etched on my Amygdala
I am not certain if their are to many recording artists, that can so effortlessly envoke such genuinely beautiful, as well as at times tragic emotions, as Mr. Cross, has been able to convey over his incredible career. Such a truly profound artist...
Every once in a while I'd see her smile And she'd turn my day around A girl with those eyes Could stare through the lies And see what your heart was saying Think of Laura but laugh don't cry I know she'd want it that way When you think of Laura laugh don't cry I know she'd want it that way A friend of a friend A friend till the end That's the kind of girl she was Taken away so young Taken away without a warning I know you and you're here In everyday we live I know her and she's here I can feel her when I sing Hey Laura, where are you now Are you far away from here I don't think so I think you're here Taking our tears away
I know what Bravery looks like! Your incredibly Mr Cross! Im sorry it took me so long to write this. Your soul has brought joy and hope to this world! Whenever I am sad and ready to give up, I turn on your music and I find a way! Your beyond human, and into the spiritual realm of great existential good! I, like most humans am beyond grateful for your art, honesty and bravery.
Well..I think he had a beautiful voice, but definitely not the best singer of all time. Steve Perry's (former Journey) vocals could not be touched..then there is George Michael, Freddie Mercury..Josh Groban, etc..

It wasnt an accident. She was murdered by a gang member who didnt care if innocent bystanders were near their gang war. It was intentional
Beautiful message ❤
This song was new when I was a tween...my friend Earl Paul, his beautiful sister Laura came to school briefly in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan at Confederation Park elementary where many of my mates lived. That song was played in kusic appreciation class and everyone was singing to Laura and laughing. It was a great moment of Chris s music and gentle manner in acknowledging Laura's passing
Its etched on my Amygdala
Laura...always remembered with beautiful lyrics
Such an awesome tribute and Christopher's voice is as good as ever on this incredible song.
I am not certain if their are to many recording artists, that can so effortlessly envoke such genuinely beautiful, as well as at times tragic emotions, as Mr. Cross, has been able to convey over his incredible career. Such a truly profound artist...
One of my fave song when i was a teenager
Every once in a while
I'd see her smile
And she'd turn my day around
A girl with those eyes
Could stare through the lies
And see what your heart was saying
Think of Laura but laugh don't cry
I know she'd want it that way
When you think of Laura laugh don't cry
I know she'd want it that way
A friend of a friend
A friend till the end
That's the kind of girl she was
Taken away so young
Taken away without a warning
I know you and you're here
In everyday we live
I know her and she's here
I can feel her when I sing
Hey Laura, where are you now
Are you far away from here
I don't think so
I think you're here
Taking our tears away
Great song
Awesome
Thank you for doing the lyrics
Omg this song brings back some memories… back when I started getting addicted to the soap General Hospital.
2024 still listening

I'm so very sorry for your loss
I know what Bravery looks like! Your incredibly Mr Cross! Im sorry it took me so long to write this. Your soul has brought joy and hope to this world! Whenever I am sad and ready to give up, I turn on your music and I find a way! Your beyond human, and into the spiritual realm of great existential good! I, like most humans am beyond grateful for your art, honesty and bravery.
great song from a great musician thank you Christophee for making the 80 s a great decade to grow up
Love this song so much! Brilliant writing and vocal. Takes me back to the early 80's. ❤
I heard this song when i was 18..and favorite of my sister to his Husband..now they already in U.S.A.all the family..love it❤
His melodies never fail.
This guy has a awesome voice love the song
The greatest singer of all time. Pure talent no auto tune folks.
Hardly the 'greatest', but he's way up on that list!!
Well..I think he had a beautiful voice, but definitely not the best singer of all time. Steve Perry's (former Journey) vocals could not be touched..then there is George Michael, Freddie Mercury..Josh Groban, etc..
I was in love with this song when I was 21 in 1984!
Always has been a beautiful song and, named Laura or not, it makes everyone think of a loved one, every time.
at first I heard it I really fell in love. think of it I'm only 8 year's old when I heard this🥺 and since now I really love this song especially the sailing❤

Incredibly beautiful song--wonderful lyrics and gorgeous chord progressions and key changes. Makes me cry every time I hear it.
Oh my God his voice is incredible. I miss this kind of music on the radio 😔
A beautiful song, very well performed by the one and only Christopher Cross.
In the 70s and 80s only a few virtuoso musicians made it in the list. I'm finishing my undergrad the time when I first heard of CC songs in Cassettes.
I love his songs I play them all the time especially think of Laura this song makes me remember my wife who passed away last year. 😢😢
❤😢lm sorry for your loss
I love this song, but I have a sister named Laura. I don’t want to think of her in past tense. But I love it.
I love this song. Loved it back in the day!
And today I’d cried listening, thinking of my granddaughter.
Kaylee was 7 1/2 years old in 2016 when we learned the dreaded news that she had terminal brainstem cancer 18 months later corner came and took her away….
My condolences for your family's great loss. Prayers for you. May little Kaylee always rest in peace. 😇🌹

I was just listening to this Song thinking...making Friends was always easy for me...keeping them was a struggle for many reasons! 🙄
Went to his concert last night at the Hollywood Bowl. He was the opening act for ToTo…
I was almost teary eyes when he sang this as his final song .. one of my bucket list to watch him live in concert.
I remember crying when i was 7 or 8 yr old when i heard this playing on the radio when I was still in the Philippines
