After wasting about an hour watching other videos while trying to remove the damn lock cylinder I found your video. You're the only person who mentioned unclipping and dropping the piece beneath the cylinder. I've removed these from other cars and never had any problems. It just wouldn't slide out period. It did come out when I used your suggestion. Thanks man! Nice job. I was late to work but at least I got there.
This is the only video that truthfully lets you know how to get the cylinder out. This video makes it very simple. He shows how the cylinder sits in at the end so you know where to push.
Thanks for the video. I just ordered a new cylinder and watching your video is way better than reading how to do it from a technical paper with illustrations.
Rob, thanks for help made my ignition switch a lot easier this time and way cheaper , key for me was to push up, by the way the black box under ignition took mine all the way off no problem, thanks for help, you made it real.
Yay! I've been trying to get this out for two days. I was about to saw into the plate with the hole in it. Thanks to your vid, I removed the bottom pin with a screwdriver and used an allen wrench to lift up on the release tab on the cylinder. Great vid.
I just had the ignition lock cylinder on a 2002 Saturn SC2 re-keyed. I had to jiggle the key for a long time to get it to turn on. The key was badly worn. I am not saying this video is wrong, but that there are apparently lots of variations on the Saturns. Another video says that for a 2000 there is a hole on the top you insert a bent pick into. The garage did not feel comfortable around the lock and the lock smith said if I took out the lock they would re-key it, as the key and the internals were both likely worn. There is small hole on the right side where you can insert a small allen wrench like you said. BUT the allen wrench pushes in on a detent that slides straight into the cylinder and allows you to pull out the cylinder. There is nothing on the left side. I took the cylinder to a locksmith and they charged $50.
I’m having the same problem where the key won’t turn at all with the exact same kind of car!! Year, model, everything, lol Your comment should hopefully help quite a bit :)
In a 99 Saturn the part that holds the cylinder in is a slit with a piece that sits flush inside. you just need to push the inside part towards the cylinder and it will release.
If you can't turn the key I learned a trick. You have to understand that the locking mechanism is basically a spring loaded "dead bolt." When you insert the key, it is supposed to relieve the spring tension which lifts the bolt. If you can't turn the key, its likely that the springs are full of debris. One option is to drill a small hole in the bottom of the cylinder housing (1/4" or smaller). This will expose the bolt so you can put upward pressure on it in an attempt to release it.
I appreciate the info about using the allen key to pry that pin up. But the one VERY important thing you forget to tell people and you should have done this as well is DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL. It is rare but air bags have went off accidentally when leaving the power on!!
What about if you can’t turn the key in there to ACC. I took my key out too quickly and the lock cylinder seems to be jammed. Can’t turn the key or unlock the wheel. I think I may have to buy an entire assembly just to hopefully start my car. If. It I’ll be splicing or jumper wire it to start.
@1:34 and @3:15 Can you remove that black box (with pin in it) under the cylinder, it has a cord coming out of it? I need to remove the column. I don't know how on your car, but mine is connected to the lock w/zip-tire. I don't know if it is supposed to be like that, or someone did a repair on it. The car was bought preowned. Thank you for the great film. Update: I have Shop Manual for that car and found fm one description there that the black box might be roll connector (I don't know what it does exactly). They say: On 2001 model remove roll connector by carefully disengaging plastic retainer tabs w/small flat ... All that is in Steering Wheel location. In another place they say: On vehicles w/automatic transaxles, connect park lock cable to ignition module (shown housing for the ignition lock cylinder).
1. where did you get the replacement part? I am having a b**** of a time finding a pre-keyed lock. in the salvage yard they all had the pin release on the top...(pre 2000 models).
hiyA can u help? I have 2001 Saturn sl . ignition locked up. broke wrong key off in . mechanic broke ignition to get key out n turn . now it tries to start but think security is stopping it. I have same old key . can I start somehow? I'm far from town n can't afford tow n may b $400 plus not including tow. if I could get one. mechanic left job unfinished.
my parents have a 2000 saturn sl1 ls1...and he's having problems starting it they told him he had to reset the computer in the ignition system.to can I avoid that cutting some wires
I have a 2002 sc2 witch is the same car just different body style. .. but I was wonder if I set up a new switch will I have to get the thing re programmed mine has a chip in the key and I was wondering if your did to and did you have to reprogram just to install a new lock cylinder
I have a 2002 sl2 -loved the video but mine did not have the black thing to disconnect the entire housing is metal. I am thinking I'm going to have to drill it out
I also have a 2001 sl2 and i also have a full metal housing. This makes me believe that at some point the entire housing has been replaced with a modern one without that plastic piece. I've put in roughly an hour and a half just fiddling with the Allen key and I still have no success. Would love a reply if you've found out other tips. Will update if I've found out how to take out the stupid cylinder. (Why can't they make them last the life of the car)
Mine doesn't have one either. Looks like we have to take the whole thing apart. Has anyone had any luck taking just the cylinder out with the full metal housing?
My car was working fine. Then my car key wouldn’t rotate from the lock position. If I follow these instructions would I be able to solve my problem? I haven’t messed with the key cause I don’t want to shave it.
Ignition will not turn when the key is inserted. Will releasing the pin unlock the lock so that the key turns? I have to replace my cylinder. The key is worn down so that's why it will not turn
If a person can actually turn their lock cylinder I don't even know why they're replacing it to begin with. If I can't even get my Tumblr to turn into the accessory position how am I ever going to remove it

I know it's 3 years after the fact but thanks man. Really helped me get mine out with ease
Rob, thanks for help made my ignition switch a lot easier this time and way cheaper , key for me was to push up, by the way the black box under ignition took mine all the way off no problem, thanks for help, you made it real.
Excuse me.. do you know what exactly that black box is?
Yay! I've been trying to get this out for two days. I was about to saw into the plate with the hole in it. Thanks to your vid, I removed the bottom pin with a screwdriver and used an allen wrench to lift up on the release tab on the cylinder. Great vid.
@@RobHereAKATrev2323 Anything I need to know on putting it back in? I guess I will find out, lol.
thank you man I couldn't put the new cylinder in till you showed me that step to release the pin really helped me out thank you
Your video instructions worked like a charm. Thanks for taking the time to put together.

Perfect! It worked on my SL1. Thanks and I appreciate it!

Same with my 2002 Saturn SC2.
Thanks for the help Bro..I have looked everywhere for this info. YOU ROCK!!
Dude you just saved me so much money. Thank you!

Now here's a question...how do you get it out without a key? and when the ignition is locked along with the steering wheel
I appreciate the info about using the allen key to pry that pin up. But the one VERY important thing you forget to tell people and you should have done this as well is DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL. It is rare but air bags have went off accidentally when leaving the power on!!
BS. This vehicle is a piece of
Airbag sensor is below shifter in the center of the car. That would have to be a hell of a short to fire the bags I imagine.
Thank you so much this REALLY helped me

These keys are really picky if they are worn down I always made like 5 extras. I really would say keep jiggeling it should turn
I hit the end of it with a mallet and switched ch keys to a less worn out spare I had, and it unlocked thankfully. Works like it’s new. Thanks friend

How do you find out what type of cylinder you have?
My car was working fine. Then my car key wouldn’t rotate from the lock position. If I follow these instructions would I be able to solve my problem? I haven’t messed with the key cause I don’t want to shave it.
What worked for you? I have this issue too
This videos helped
Make sure the battery off I'm going too try this..my key keep getting stuck
The key is no longer working how do i get it out without turning it.
Does the pin unlock the key lock when it is pulled out???
Ignition will not turn when the key is inserted. Will releasing the pin unlock the lock so that the key turns? I have to replace my cylinder. The key is worn down so that's why it will not turn
The steering wheel is locked and the ignition is locked. Do you have to use a hex key for the right side or can you use a star key as well?
very helpful tip
Can’t get the new key to reprogram. Started once. Stuck again. 😞
If a person can actually turn their lock cylinder I don't even know why they're replacing it to begin with. If I can't even get my Tumblr to turn into the accessory position how am I ever going to remove it
use a 7/32 SAE socket
I have 2000 saturn sc2 it will start then shut off frount tier blow out set off air bags replace them but know it woun,t stay running
