  • You can use your iPad as a Whiteboard in your Microsoft Team meetings.
By making your iPad a secondary display, running the Whiteboard App on it, Sharing it in Teams - you have a way to use your iPad and Apple pencil to work/draw more easily on the whiteboard while meeting.
It also captures your work when you record the Team meeting.

The latest version of MS Teams for iOS allows you to screen share from your iPad direct into a Teams session. So join the meeting on your PC, then join the meeting on your iPad (add the device, instead of switching devices). You can then screen share from your iPad and use the whiteboard with your Apple pencil and everyone in the meeting can see it and also collaborate on the Whiteboard too. I love Duet, but it isn't needed for this process anymore.

I've been wondering how to leverage the iPad all of us in my architecture office seem to have anyway... You nailed it with this workflow!
I did just try this and discovered a potentially easier method. Similar to how you prefer using the desktop Whiteboard app over the Teams Whiteboard, you could install the standalone Whiteboard app for iOS, which gives the same full set of features as the desktop.
My workflow now goes something like this:
    1) launch teams meeting on desktop, join on iPad (or vice versa)
    2) start whiteboard (either in teams or desktop version)
    3) on ipad, select option to open whiteboard in the app
Voila. Full feature on my ipad, syncing perfectly with desktop. I often have PDFs on my desktop I like to mark up with a team, which is as easy as going to desktop app, importing pdf, and then doodling over the pdf on ipad. This method lets me bypass Duet altogether.
(Note: if iPad app doesn't allow you to login to work or school account, you need to install Microsoft Authenticator as well).

It should work on any iOS device. You need to install it on the iPad and on your desktop too. Then the iPad and Desktop can “talk” to each other.
Also, make sure that the iPad and the Computer are on the same network (wireless) or that the iPad is connected and trusted by the computer (wired)

  • @-netify-3128

This is fine, but requires paying for software. If you’re doing this for a meeting on Zoom or any of the services, just join the meeting from the ipad, load up MS Whiteboard, and share screen. It will cut out an extra latency of going through the PC / Duet path.
Also, don’t forget that for over a year now, the iPad supports a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard directly. The Logitech MX Keys and MX Master 3 mouse allow controlling 3 different Bluetooth-connected systems by switching between them with a button press.
It works great when working across multiple systems or on machines for multiple clients.
Add an Apple Pencil, and you have lots of options.
Another great ‘whiteboard’ tool that is not a whiteboard is using the limitless ‘canvas’ of MS OneNote. The iPad version is awesome, allows going full screen, can pinch to zoom in/out to increase canvas size, has many features for drawing, benefits from Apple’s new ‘Scribble’ handwriting recognition system, etc. Don’t forget the MS Math support - with Cartesian coordinate graphs, z-axis option, (still waiting for the math symbols library tho).
Plus, with the Bluetooth keyboard directly on the iPad, you can type in text content anytime.

    • @LearningandTechnology

I find the screen real estate on the iPad (even my 12”) just isn’t enough to both manage the meeting, chat, and whiteboard.
However, I also use Duet for other work - so the cost is worth it.
You are correct, the iPad can act as a stand alone unit.

    • @LearningandTechnology
      @LearningandTechnology  4 роки тому

That’s an interesting question. The only way that I can think of is to have an external camera showing your hand and pencil. I have done this with my iPhone attached to a neat little clip holder. The challenge is to ensure that everything is in focus and visibility is good.
I’ve also used an overhead camera to show myself working on paper or books.
It’s a bit more complex to setup, but important for drafting or drawing videos.

@@LearningandTechnology I tried this but can't get it to work. You can't move the iPad MS Whiteboard app into the screen that is being shared via Duet with MS Teams. I guess you need a desktop version of MS Whiteboard that can exploit a touchscreen but there isn't one for Mac because Apple doesn't make a touchscreen laptop. Gah…! Would really love to know if there is way round this…

Ok - I eventually got a solution (via one of your other videos). I downloaded Reflector 3 which allows me to Airplay my iPad screen to my MacBook. I can then share that screen on MS Teams for teaching. That let's me use a sketching app on my iPad in online tutorials. I actually resorted to MS PowerPoint on the iPad since it allows me to use a combination of pre-prepared material - which can be annotated in real time with the Apple pencil - and blank slides as a clean whiteboard.

@@robertrosca5021 Ah! yes - you can do that, if you use Teams on the iPad - I tend to use my computer to "Drive" my classroom and use the iPad as a secondary display. I see where you are going with just logging into Teams and using the Whiteboard App there.
There are actually TWO Whiteboard Apps - the one built into Teams and the stand alone. The stand-alone is a bit more feature-rich and that's the one I like to use. Earlier, I was having challenges with the built-in Whiteboard in Teams.
If I launch the stand-alone App on my iPad, it gets a bit challenging to switch between that and Teams on the iPad. So it's really a matter of preference.
You can certainly just open the Whiteboard App and share it - it just doesn't work for my classroom set-up, but could work for some folks for sure.
The option that you describe is great though! The lag is not super noticeable and it's a good idea as well.

Yes - if you are using it as a second monitor as I describe in the video. In Teams, select "sharing" and you will see it as "screen 2" (or similar). Share it - and your audience will see it in the same way as if you were sharing any other screen.
You could also share it as a "Application" - both ways work.

You don’t need two devices. You can run the whiteboard on the iPad alone or the computer alone. This video just shows how to have the iPad as a separate, dedicated monitor.
I use and like products from both companies.
Apple doesn’t have anything equivalent to Teams or Whiteboard - so in that regard, Microsoft is actually ahead of Apple. However, things change fast - let’s see if Apple makes anything like these products in the future.
