@@celticwarrior916 thanks, i hope you get some relief too.. this is my first bout in about a year, but it has been going for almost a month.. i found a lead in one of the comments and will try drinking 1.5tsp baking soda in cup of water. many people swear by it so i will try it.
Tip from a fellow Gout sufferer. Treat gout as a food allergy. Keep a food diary and identify your triggers. I found my main trigger was ''wholemeal products'' such as wholemeal bread/biscuits/cookies/pasta and meat that uses bread crumbs as a filler - such as burgers and sausages. I then eliminated them from my diet and have been pain free for the past two years. I am no expert just a fellow sufferer and it worked for me. Stay safe and well people.
@@Staffys4Lyfe Sorry to hear of your distress. Simple answer is I eat and drink everything including alcohol. Treat it as an intolerance to a 'Food' or an 'Ingredient'. My trigger is 'wholemeal flour.' This is going to be rude - so apologies. If you are in pain - the cause is sitting in your system. YOU NEED TO REMOVE THE CAUSE. (have a shit). Eventually the pain will ease and disappear BUT may take two - three days. DO NOT EAT THE TRIGGER FOOD AGAIN AS THE PAIN WILL JUST KEEP GOING. Four tablets can help taken together (two paracetamol + two ibuprofen) Do not be tempted to take more than one or two times as these drugs will eventually aggravate the symptoms. Try to fast if you can, and only eat really safe foods. A little breast of chicken or white rice. HOWEVER these foods can be triggers in some individuals so be careful. Everyone is different and will have different triggers eg. (marshmallow/chocolate/seafood/beef all mentioned by some people.) Keep a food diary and I hope you feel better soon. The ketogenic diet is high fat, moderate protein, and low carbohydrate (< 20 grams per day of net carbs) diet. Carbs are not your friend. Gout is a metabolic inflammatory response caused by insulin resistance which is in turn caused by high blood sugar which is in turn caused by a diet high in carbohydrates typical of the standard American diet. High fructose corn syrup, sugar, starchy carbs like potatoes, grains (bread, pasta, cereal, white rice), and fruit juice all making the worst of the worst carbs list. Gout is not a stand alone metabolic problem. Gout is a symptom and warning sign of insulin resistance caused by by decades of chronically high blood sugar. If you are suffering from gout you should also become educated and aware of the multitude of interrelated metabolic problems that stem from insulin resistance. Fortunately, the ketogenic diet stops and reverses the problem of insulin resistance and therefore prevents and reverses many of the problems that stem from insulin resistance. I am 57. was doing crazy starvation diet for on and off for like past 5 months .. and on day I had a gout or maybe according to doc. He said it’s inflammation but it was very painful. Do you think it will go back to normal once I start eating normally again ?? If it was gout.
@@sanpat2220 Start with 'safe' foods like veg/fruit/fish/chicken/rice and maybe pasta. If OK, add new foods each day or week until you identify your triggers. You need to look at the ingredients as well as the food itself and fluids as colouring and additives may cause a problem. Good luck and stay well my friend.
I’ve noticed that I can almost tell the day before if I’m going to have a flare up. What I’ve done is take some ibuprofen and cherry tart extract and it normally does the trick.
I swear my gout is triggered by high stress. Not just one time, but multiple high stress situations piled up. Another one is exercising, I know it sounds weird but every time I start working out to lose weight (to avoid gout) I end up GETTING A GOUT FLARE! Am I the only one?
You are not the only one. I just had a gout flare. I just had a lot of stress over the multiple things. And I started exercising like rollerblading and lost about 8 pounds. Then I just had a gout flare. Granted I started drinking beer, but not much, two cans a day and smoking a one pack in a week, but I don't think that was the reason. It's weird but I believe sweating a lot by rollerblading and exercise brought on the gout.
I'm a healthy 37 year old and kept getting gout, no family history. It turns out 1 cup of water a day is not enough for the human body. I started drinking water like a normal person, about 2 liters or so a day, and no more gout.
Drink lots of water! Very important to avoid and treat flairs. Drink enough water to produce 2 liters of urine. In my opinion staying hydrated is the most important thing you can do
beer agree, red meat (in my case i did not noticed), sugar and fructose outside of fruit - 100% yes, spinach - yes only spinach in veggies. seafood maybe.
My husband triggers are stress and glucose/fructose/carbs. I believe it’s related to being insulin resistance. When my husband went low carb it all cleared no case in over one year. My husband did not over eat any of the foods. The reason beer is a trigger is because it’s high carb that becomes sugar in body and lead to insulin resistance same as fructose. Gout is associated with metabolic syndrome.
Yes I’ve researched gout a lot and it is a form of arthritis. I’ve been suffering with gout for about 5 years now. It’s really strange how my gout is triggered. I think the most consistent trigger is high fructose syrup drinks or food. I find stress is also a factor. I’m trying to drink more water to keep my system flushed better. I don’t drink alcohol but I do drink soft drinks too much and so I’m gonna have to remove those from my diet. Gout is very painful. People have ask me to describe it and the best I can come up with is imagine you have a severe burn and a broken bone in the same area. I wish there was a cure because this can really be debilitating and I’ve had to miss work a lot because of gout. Thank you for drawing attention to this horrible ailment.

It's my third time that I have been affected with gout. First and second time,when it happened, there had been a stinging feeling to my big toe, swelling and slight darkening of skin. I took the prescribed medicine and the four was addressed. This is the third time it has been happening, so I did some research and found out that following foods aggravated the issue: 1. Beef 2. Foods with yeast 3. Caffeine (I used to have 3-4 cups of tea with milk) 4. Pulses 5. Branched Chain Amino Acid supplement 6. Whey Protein However, the third time was less severe and quite bearable since I made a few changes to my diet; 1. Started having apple cider vinegar - a teaspoon in a cup of hot water with honey. 3 days a week on an empty stomach. 2. Quarter lemon squeezed into lukewarm water with honey. 4 days a week on an empty stomach. 3. Reduced my caffeine intake to 1 cup per day. 4. Started having fennel and cinnamon tea in the evening to avoid the craving for more caffeine. 5. Increased intake of water, earlier it was 8-9 glasses a day, now it is 11-12. 6. Reduced the intensity of exercise sessions, initially I used to do a 45 minute HIIT, 6 days a week. Afterwards, I tailored the workout to a 30 minute moderate intensity weight training session with an added 4 min TABATA HIIT, 5 days a week with a 30 minute yoga routine on remaining days. 7. Reduced beef intake by 25% per month. I haven't yet taken medicine and feel quite better. P. S. I don't drink alcohol.

After about 20 doctors a rheumatologist told me it was the change in uric acid levels that caused gout attacks. The more drastic the change the more likely to get an attack. The really surprising part was that dropping your uric acid levels too quickly can cause attacks.
I've been on 100mg allopurinol for about 5 years. No gout attacks since started. Used to have them about 4 times a year. Was originally on 300mg but I told my doctor I was experiencing slightly "weird" sensations at times. Weird sensations could have been caused by anything, really. Anyway, dialing it back to 100mg did not render it ineffective. I still register 6.0+ on my Uric Acid levels. My Uric Acid came back last month at 7.4. So yeah, makes sense what your Dr is saying. Maybe allopurinol just "stabilizes" the Uric Acid levels where there aren't wild swings. Not necessarily decreasing levels.
I'm 32, I was first diagnosed when I was 23. I've found that for me it's large amounts of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), some beer, fast weight loss (my guess is due to loss of water), and some exercise can trigger it in me as well. I'm one of the people who, unfortunately, have had it consistently since diagnosis. While I don't have attacks often anymore (and god those were the worst when I first was diagnosed), it has left me in a constant state of pain, which I've unfortunately adapted to. I say unfortunate because no one should have to adapt to daily pain.
@Chad, I am so sorry to hear of your pain. People that don't have gout know nothing of extreme pain. I have found that montmorency tart cherry juice concentrate helps me. It does not prevent an attack but it helps keep them from happening. I buy it at Meijer's. It isn't cheap but it makes a lot. I mix about a tablespoon or so in a glass of water. I think its good. I also mix up a jug and add some lemon and sweetener and keep it in the fridge. I haven't had a full blown-can't walk attack in a few years compared to many times a year. Sugar is the big one then beer is the next one. It all depends how much you ingest. You can still enjoy these things but you might have to cut back on how much you ingest
My dad has been suffering from gout for years and years. Red meats and beer. He stopped eating shellfish, red meats, breads, everything BUT the booze. So, he would make himself better with garlic and other anti inflammatory foods, and stop drinking and as soon as he felt better he would go back to drinking. Needless to say, the gout spread to the knees, the arms, the hands, the feet, he swells up. My only advice- stop the drinking.
Does he have a good diet? Daily citrus fruits, alkaline mineral water, no juices in cartons, no ice cream, no cakes, no sugary things, no potato crisps? He has to bin it and stay away from steaks.

Recently I have backed down the booze and up'd the stealing of the kids OJ in the mornings and organic cherry juice, just mine, no one else likes it (for both the curiousness of the cherries, and I like the glass jars), and I just acquired the worst gout attack to date, for me. In the recent past, I have had flare ups around the ankles (now I understand to be mildly), still able to go to work, slowed the booze, up'd the water, and waited for crystals to dissolve, and could still function. All my mindsets at the time had it under control. Now, age 42, two days ago, middle toes, largest toe joints, went absolutely mad. I am Down, I am Useless, I am pe'ode! Like I said, recently cut back on bad diets just cause I'm a Dad, and need a healthier lifestyle. We ironically had a few seafood dishes back to back last week, I been getting into the forbidden OJ (5 kiddoes under 12 and all mine so I'm told), and my personal cherry juice. BAM!! Can't walk. Am I being punished for changing my diet? Related to the OJ, seafood, and /or alcohol? I use to be sure, now I am not so sure. We are meat eaters, we will continue to eat med-rare steaks regardless of cost. Again. This is my story. Not saying I know anything more or less than anybody else, just adding to the pool. ONLY other thing I want to add is: I have a nurse in the family, I was an Air Ambulance pilot for some time, and I have never seen any of these other Medical Professionals ever agree with each other on much. I got the first most painful gout of my life 3 weeks ago. I thought I had broken my ankle. Mine was totally sugar and oatmeal with raisins. 15 years ago I had my first mild case of gout on my big toe. This time for three days I couldn't walk to the horrible pain in my ankle. What helped me was staying away from all the foods that are high in purines. Then for pain and clearing, ibuprofen, sulfer, major water drinking up to 14 cups of lemon water, lowfat milk, coffee, and cherry juice. My blood was just too acidic with too much uric acid. I hope this helps any one with gout.
I’m follow a strict ‘plant based diet’ and I still suffer. My triggers are dehydration and when I’m dehydrated even the littlest amount of beer or lager triggers it. I don’t drink alcohol much at all, but when these thing occur BANG! It’s thee most painful thing I’ve ever experienced!! I feel for anyone suffering from gout I really do!
My husband has it and it is brought on by stress. He does not eat meat or shellfish , does not drink alcohol or coffee either. He just had major surgery and his gout came on the day before . As he is not allowed strong painkillers when he came back from hospital i tried to give him cherry juice tart from health shop and after drinking it for 8 days (about 6 litres) it went away.
I have been in a Keto diet and practicing Intermittent fasting. I got a gout flare. I understand the body in order to get rid of death cells convert them to Uric acid. When you don’t eat enough protein your body consume your muscles protein producing more Uric acid. People with cancer produce a lot of Uric acid due to the amount of death cells.
Interesting comment - From the research ive done is uric acid is made from Purines which is essentially in everything, its the breaking down of DNA. So loosing muscle mass makes sense
Asparagus caused my first gout bout. Now, I can feel an attack coming. I drink lots of water, take Advil and eat dried cherries. It works for me. Oh, and I stretch the affected joint. And ice afterwards.
Triggers for me: stress on my feet. Eg. walking a lot, using the rowing machine. After a month long miserable gout attack 3 months ago I made the following changes: - stopped using rowing machine - cut down alcohol - switched BP med from diuretic - drinking lemon water in the morning and hydrating throughout the day - taking vitamin C supplement. So far so good.
From my experience... what triggered gout for me is dehydration, which messes up your kidneys due to a lack of water and something else... And the the second problem is that drinking water does not solve the problem. Here is why, it is an electrolyte imbalance!! When I work outdoors intensively I sweat profusely and few days after it shows up. When I replenish my electrolytes, it does not show up. For examples the MIO water enhancer with electrolytes :) Cheers
Yes, I noticed being dehydrated and then eating a heavy, salty meal… right afterwards I swell up in my toes and calves then my fingers and wrists. Not good .
Tart Cherry Extract, Celery Seed Extract, and two times a week a Glass of water with Baking Soda, a Great Help. I had Gout every 2 or 3 Weeks, Beer did me in. Certain Foods would Get Me, Sugar makes Uric Acid twice as Much as anything Else. I`ve had Gout for 35 years, also there`s a Hereditary Factor. Make the changes if your as Tired of Gout as I was. I came here because I love Bob and Brad and was hoping they addressed the issue of gout. This is the 2nd attack this year that has hit me in the ankles and left me bed ridden. Thank you all for the suggestions. I'm still not sure what my triggers are, but I'll keep trying to figure it out.
Abandon: Crab, tuna, pop, red meat, mushrooms, alcohol, and dehydration. If you treat these few items like poison, all other like and kind items will give birth to discretion. There are plenty of other things to eat to choose from. Drink water at an inconvenient rate. Keep tart cherry supplements at the ready and get them on board asap to help mitigate pain. @@g_pazzini Sugary food is fine as long as it's in moderation and balanced with fibre (i.e. fruits), unless you explicitly have a fruit trigger. It's processed foods with added sugar that you need to watch out for.
I have finnally found a cure for me that works in about 8 hours sooner if i can catch it in time: immediately start eating a vegetarians diet during the attack followed by eating lots of fresh pineapples and cherries, the main key is lemon water every hour or so and every 2 hours eat a big chunk of fresh ginger and fresh garlic. Also have several sips of apple cider vinegar. Follow up with staying in bed foot elevated and keep meditating pale green light visualising going thru your feet or effected area. I found out that when i took ACV and 1 lime/lemon, i started to burp out some weird smell from my stomach. Then my flare gout is gone like an instant 😃. Not really sure what happened but i found out it is interesting. By only ACV or only lime will not have the optimum effect which i tried before.
A month ago I had a severe attack of Gout in the toes, and ankles on both legs, and in the knee on the left leg, Was not able to walk for some days. Was hospitalised for about ten days. I now hav made a total change in my food supplies. It's terrible pain.
Low thyroid levels can cause gout, that is what did it in me. When your thyroid level drops it slows down your metabolism. It’s the mechanism that animals use to hibernate . When your metabolism drops your kidneys stop working as good as they should. This causes a build up of uric acid.in the blood and gout will start up. With me it’s in all my joints not just one or two. I take levothyroxin every day as my immune system killed my thyroid. If the doctors try to decrease the amount of meds I am on the uric acid starts climbing and the gout starts up. SO, if you have gout have your thyroid checked.

Gout, I have had a few times, even in my knees and shoulders. I took Tart Cherrie extract 4 times a day for 3 days and the Gout all left. This is an old remedy and worked well for me. Drinking Coffee also helps.

Well I eat no cards,drink 2 litres of water,absolutely no sugar,plenty of vegetables,fish,and no red meats and I just got a bad attack that i ended up in hospital. Go figure.
I just experienced my first gout attack. Im very strict as an eater and I know that I incorporated red meat into my diet when I moved out west 3yrs ago. Before that I ate a lot of chicken n veggies. Im a NON-drinker, no significant sweets or fructose. Im into fitness so it was a set back. Im backing out the red meat as I believe this has direct correlation to MY gout flare up. From my research n dissecting the large amount of conflicting information, Ive instituted organic tart cherry juice, use of dark cherries in a smoothie, turmeric with high level curcuminoids n low/no fat dairy and nuts and seeds. Hoping this mitigates the chance of a flare up. Strength n luck to all those that have suffered this Excruciatingly painful condition 💪🏼
So, is there a way to monitor your uric acid levels? I'm hearing they can't be to high or to low. How do you actually know where your balance is before the attack? And, by the way thanks for the information as usual.
I am having my second battle with a acute gout attack. The first time was painful, but 5 years later this gout attack the pain has been unbearable. I have it in my ankle and know most of my foot has become numb. I was drinking nothing, but soda and I am sure that is what brought it on.
I’m currently going through a bout with gout. 1st time ever in my knee. Going on my 4th week as it moves to different locations. Dr prescribed allopurinol 300 6yrs ago. I’m also on colchicine .6mg and norco’s. I received my 1 cortisone shot ever to relieve some swelling that slowly worked after a week. Still can’t put any weight on it. I noticed years ago organ meats set it off, due to reoccurring bouts at around Thanksgiving, organs in gravy..... also from brined turkey. I do believe after 3 years w/o issue this case was caused by dehydration(heat exhaustion) with a couple ice cold Gatorade’s which I haven’t had in years. This is the 2 case I’ve had that has lasted multiple weeks, one lasted 2 1/2 months, bout was so bad a powdery substance formed outside on my skin, dr suggested crystallization. Not fun in any way, wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Thanks for hearing my story. PS, I’ve tried all the remedies cherries, cherry juice, alkaline drinks, cbd’s, essential oils and I even purchased an ice man power pump for long term chilling. Cbd’s and the constant icing have helped the most.
Mine moves down from one of my knees into the toe on the same foot and then crosses over to the other foot and up to the knee. Often in one of my elbows all at the same time. It usually takes more than a month. I don't get much sleep.
Stop all fruit consumption for at least three weeks and you may be surprised with the results. It is fructose the main cause of gout. Stop listening to doctors who all they really want is to increase their wealth at the expense of our health.
My big toe joint pain seems more consistent, and doesn't really flare up or ache as bad as it sounds like some folks does. And rubbing that joint, particularly the top side is where and when I'll really feel it.
Turkey, drinking alcohol multiple days in a row, seafood with high purines all seem to trigger gout. I also get a gout flare up in an area where I get an injury. Gout seems to follow and flare up that area where I get an injury at.
I have that same issue with a flare up occurring at the site of a previous injury. In fact that’s how I first got diagnosed was after an injury to my big toe that never seemed to heal.
DEHYDRATION! Number one reason for gout. Also fasting too long causing rapid weight loss EVEN when on a healthy diet. Also the secondary causes are due to the dehydration factor. Alcohol is extremely dehydrating.
@@seanlaskey2873 I meant fasting for days. Intermittent Fasting is fine. Just be sure to s stay well hydrated with lots of WATER. And plenty of sea salt and electrolytes.
Thanks for your input. I have been rollerblading a lot which makes me sweat a lot. I was happy that I lost about 10 pounds. But I was sweating every day and I drank two cans of beers every night for past four weeks . Then I just had gout flare last night after rollerblading. Now, I will make sure that I drink plenty of fluids and cut down on drinking so I will not be subject to extreme dehydration.
Only 20% with increased uric acid levels experience gout pain.. In other words the human body is designed to tolerate uric acid crystals anyway.. Therefore I don't believe the crystals are the real reason.. Instead a LACK of certain elements could cause these crystals to become harmful.. Think of something like: "crystals to X" ratio.. Just like the oil in the engine that prevents the heat of elements rubbing with each other.. Excessive meat could be depleting or blocking this X that normally would avoid the gout pain.. Scientists must find what X is and raise or restore that instead of trying to reduce uric acid.. Maybe X is "cortisol" and pain starts especially when there is an excessive cortisol drop in the body based on chronic stress and that shows itself mostly at nights, maybe X is a certain vitamin, a certain mineral.. Maybe X is "water".. Just thinking out loud.. Orthodox studies always focus on isolating the suspected elements... But Isolation kills the idea how the micro elements in our bodies interact with each other.. It ignores the mechanism as a whole which if they were included could have changed the research outcome drastically.. My two cents.. Peace.. Out ✌
So I was actually Diagnosed at 19 as having Gout. I'm now 31 and have had many flares through out the year, but its interesting to hear others stories and what triggers theirs. When I first went to the doctors, they gave me 3 full pages of foods I was to avoid, over time I found my Trigger foods and honestly because of the pain I just avoid them all together. Red meat is on the list but I eat alot of red Meat daily(Cow) and I'm fine, If I eat Deer, my gout will flare up, if I eat Pork, that night my gout will flare up. I can't eat seafood any more, but I found that I can eat tilapia and be ok. Nuts I avoid all together as well. If I eat Almonds it will flare up, but Almond milk I'm fine. I can't eat peanuts or peanut butter any more.. I have definitely done alot of research on this matter, but each person is different to and extent. I also found that the Hops in beer is what causes that to be so bad, but liquor doesn't affect me.

I was first diagnosed with gout at age 24. I suffered from frequent severe gout attacks for over 30 years until I started the ketogenic diet about 2 years ago. Within a month of starting the ketogenic diet my gout just went away. I stopped taking my gout prevention meds (allopurinol) and have remained gout free for over 2 years. I also lost 45 pounds switching to the ketogenic diet. My experience is quite common and normal for gout sufferers who switch to a ketogenic diet. Oddly, many of the trigger foods you listed are are highly recommended on a ketogenic diet. Carbohydrates are the root cause of chronically high blood sugar leading to insulin resistance and gout. If you were to switch to a ketogenic diet you may find you are able to go back to enjoying the foods you listed as trigger foods.
@@fattofitguy I'm doing great, I maybe have 1 flare up a year now, sometimes not for a for years in-between attacks. I watch what I eat, and take cherry Tart pills twice a day, and if I feel a attack coming on ill add potassium citrate powder. Stops it cold
Beer and shellfish are the killers for me. There are a few prescribed meds that really help. To end flare ups quickly, I’ve had success taking both colchicine as well as separately taking indomethacin. Besides changing your diet and eating habits, allopurinol can be taken as a preventative to help control your uric acid levels.
I don't drink alcohol I drink 5 to 8 glasses of water I eat 3 times, I'm vegetarian I have moderate psoriasis For the first time, I feel this gout pain. I had a little pain I went for a walk and at night it started paining like hell.
Just saw this video. I follow Bob and Brad but hadn't seen this video yet. I take allopurinol (prescription drug) which cuts way back on the gout attacks, but they still occur every few months. I found that if i also take some form of cherry (fresh, juice or capsule) with the allopurinol that i can usually expect to have an attack only about every year or year and one half...I ran out of the cherry capsules i take about a month ago and kept forgetting to pick some up at the vitamin store...sure enough, last week i got gout in my left knee...Cherries are a miracle drug to help prevent gout. If you have severe gout like me you should consider getting a prescription from your Doc for allopurinol as well.

Right in the middle of a gout attack in my ankle after a period of retrocalcaneal bursitis, if find I have 2 triggers. First is trauma, if my feet get knocked/hurt then gout will flare up the next day, the second is Aspartame in drinks, if I mistakenly drink anything with this in I won’t be able to walk the next day

I barely eat sugar, don't drink alcohol and eat meat about once a week. I still have gout. My rheumatologist believes it's a simple case of my kidney doesn't break down purine normally. My flare-ups seem pretty random since I barely consume some trigger food but eat others (broccoli, tofu, fungi) almost daily. It doesn't seem related to my food consumption :/ I would say food that dehydrates you seems to be more likely to trigger a flare-up (e.g. red meat, organ meat etc.). So water seems to be the key. There are inexpensive medications available out there with little side effects so if you are consistent with your meds you should be fine. I do live in a country with universal healthcare so the price thing may be different for peeps in the US tho.
@@arynayalawolf2863 I want to say yes but I've always been drinking a lot of water. That's what you should do anyway. Another thing I forgot to mention in my OP is salt. Breaking down salt takes a lot of water from your system.
I just got diagnosed with gout in the usual big toe joint. Geez it hurt like hell and I thought my toe was broken or dislocated! Could barely walk! I also have finger joint and elbow soreness. It is a mystery how this has happened though. I have been a vegetarian for around 3yrs so I eat a lot of vegetables, eat fish, drink a lot of spring water and the occasional iced tea (no corn syrup listed in the ingredients). I don’t drink alcohol. I do also eat grains. I like a lot of salt on my food. I have a kidney stone and I’m on the borderline of diabetes. Now the slow process of eliminating different foods from my diet to see what the culprit is. 😞
Just at tail end of my first attack which has lasted two weeks...probably acute pain for at least 4 or 5 days. Many sleepless nights. And trying to get my head around what changes are necessary. While I ate all the healthy stuff, I also had a lot of potential triggers. I have stopped drinking alcohol. And eating red meat and fish (at least while attack in progress). Cutting back on fructose and sugars (life-long sweet tooth). Looking out for yeast. Basically stripped out all of the stuff I love from my diet :( But there is a lot of contradictory and hard-to-verify info....esp anecdotal. And, in the end, it's possible diet may not be that important at all.

haven't had a gout attack in years. I got rid of everything that had yeast in is. Bread, beer, alcohol, ect. Also I cut out all sugar. I think now that I am doing a Keto/Carnivore diet and not had any attacks in a year and a half is nothing that causes inflammation. Hope this helps. Have suffered from gout for many years. I have recently changed to a vegan plant based diet but this is not preventing attacks! I drink minimal alcohol and a lot of water but I do also drink fizzy soft drinks daily which is most likely the trigger
My first attack came when I was in the hospital for pancreatitis. My feet swelled up and it was painful. Turns out I had my first case.of gout. I've had flare ups ever since. I'm an alcoholic, so mine are due to drinking. The most recent one came after three days of no drinking and bam!! Gout flare up. I can thankfully walk this time and am able to work while sitting. I'm only 38.
I first got gout as 34 yr old woman, healthy lifestyle, pescatarian low BMI no soda etc- other than 3-5 drinks a weeks I did not partake in obvious triggers. BUT I believe my gout is affected largely by genetics, all of my grandparents suffered from gout before they were 65+ and my triggers seemed to be not consuming enough water (dehydration) and being on my feet for longer than 6 hours. If I have a lobster roll and a beer I know I have to stay off my feet. I have found relief with using a Cannabis lotion (1:1 CBD/THC ratio) as soon as I get the telltale sign of a hot itchy tender spot somewhere on my foot I massage the lotion in, this seems to help a lot.
I don't have triggers. I feel like it just comes on randomly, mostly overnight but sometimes it'll start in the afternoon. Since I'm on my feet all day, they kinda get sore any ways so I'm often wondering is it gout or just fatigue? Sure, I've put myself in a serious gout penalty box if I eat ONLY meat for like 5 days but other than that I have no idea.
Black cherries seem to help gout. Eating no meats or sugars helps as well when there’s flare ups. Apple cider vinegar, turmeric , cbd oil... I have clients with gout- they say carbs- meats- rich fishes like salmon, sugars all give them gout flare ups. Never massage gout. I do send love energy into the area.

I’m 32 years old and have been dealing with gout on and off for about 8 years. I take allopurinol daily along with multiple vitamins for preventing inflammation. If I have 2 beers I get a gout attack. If I eat any tuna I get a gout attack. If I take Aleve as soon as I feel it coming I can usually prevent a full on flair up. I also have celiac and found if I consume any gluten it can also cause a flare up.
I'm female and developed gout in my big toe at age 22. I've looked at the inflammatory food list. I don't eat hardly any refined carbohydrates, I avoid sugar (have never been a soda drinker), eat red meat about once or twice a week at the most, rarely have shrimp or shellfish of any sort, I don't consume margarine or shortening, don't eat fried foods (I'm gluten free besides), can't eat french fries (my body retains too much of the potassium in potatoes), and I eat all the anti-inflammatory foods that I can (that I'm not allergic to). Mostly I've been eating a Mediterranean diet my entire adult life.
My number one is soda. I did a test after not having soda for a year, had ZERO gout flare ups during that time, I drank 2 cans of soda in one day. The next day I had a massive flare up. I always get gout in my toes like most people. I recognized that my toes would turn purple after sitting in a chair for periods of time. My wife suggested I purchase a pair of leg massager and best compression socks to help circulation. I can now drink soda and pretty much anything I want, at a reasonable level, as long has I wear my socks on those days. Zero flare ups. I don’t take alopurinal or anything anymore. They have been a a Godsend!
First got gout about 10 years ago after having a large piece of liver in a diner in Albany, NY. Couldn't believe the pain and thought I had kicked the end of the bed during the night. Haven't had liver since, I also get triggered by OJ particularly the stuff they serve in hotels at breakfast. Was prescribe Alupurinol but didn't seem to work as effectively as taking some Ibuprofen when I get the first twinge of a flair up.

I'm a physically fit male with hereditary gout; my father, brother & son have it. I recently experienced a 2 week gout attack in the big toe following 9 gout free years. I did a complete analysis of everything I ate in the week leading up to the attack. I like to eat healthy & had several high protein 'Quorn' vegetarian meals. The weather was hot & I failed to increase my fluid intake. I should have seen the first warning signs when I noticed that my pee was frothy. This is a sign of protein in the urine & kidneys under stress. Some research revealed 'Quorn' contains high levels of Mycoproteins which are high in purines & this elevated my uric acid levels. The week ended at a friend's BBQ where I ate sausages, burgers & several grain based ales. This was the trigger to already elevated levels of uric acid, a perfect storm! At 2am the following morning my big toe was pounding! If I were to give any advice on 9 gout free years it would be everything in moderation & drink at least five pints of water per day to flush uric acid out of the body! I will never be so complacent again!

I'm looking forward to another long gout free run but remain far more alert to the early signs of a random attack.
just watched a video from dr ken berry re gout. He explains the body makes uric acid on its own in more quantity than you could possibly eat via meat and seafood. its like saying adding a cup of water to the ocean would make it overflow.
I'm getting mixed messages with my computer research on gout. Some say coffee, asparagus, beans okay while other sites say avoid them. I think my flare up came from an asprin a day. Seems the last time I was taking an asprin a day my toe flared up. The gout went away when I stopped taking the asprin or it just may have been a coincidence. I'm drinking a lot of water now.
Yes, the information is often contradictory. [1] Anecdotal evidence suggests that coffee drinkers have a better uric acid excretion rate. [2] Many sources say that asparagus doesn’t cause gout, but for some people asparagus (like spinach) is a trigger food, regardless of how much purines it has. I’ve having an attack right now, caused by the oxalates in spinach. [3] Aspirin (salicylic acid) definitely elevates uric acid levels.

I notice that mine acts up mostly when dehydrated. I can have the typical trigger foods and drinks with no issues provided I'm drinking plenty of water consistently.
I have osteoarthritis, especially in my knee. When I went on the keto diet, I had a "bout of gout" . I tried several months later to go on the keto diet again, and again I had a gout flare-up. Don't know what part of the diet causes this, but I am avoiding this diet.
Causes: Meat, of any kind, and even fish. Whole food plant based diet is the best way of eating for lowering inflammation, uric acid and preventing gout.
Hydrochlorothiazide was the main reason for getting gout. My Rheumatologist thought my doctor should have discontinued HZTZ as soon as I got my test results. It took 4 years for my doctor to figure it out.

Question about your keto diet-do you have a person you go to for help (like a keto dietician)? I've been watching Dr. Eric Berg's channel and it all seems so overwhelming, but the comments from everyone tell me that keto is the way to go. But I definitely need someone's help in getting started with it. I can't seem to find anyone in my area who could direct me on this lifetime diet change. The intermittent fasting is surprisingly not so tough for me, it's just finding the right foods. There aren't any farmer's markets in my area for me to get organic foods, either. :c(

First time gout attack, 53 morbidly obese, type 2 diabetes last 6 years (stable sugar level 5.9 since 1990) Usually drink 8-10 cups of tea per day with 2 teaspoons brown sugar. Onset appears to be dehydration drank only 4 cups tea. Usual diet low carb high protein last 3 years, seafood about 500 grams per week. was drinking about 1lt a week beetroot juice last 2 month.(alcohol nil). Took the 3 tablets prescribed by doctor, 24 hours later pain low.
I've had very rare gout attacks for a few years now. I believe it's mostly stress that causes mine to flare up as I can go a few months changing very little what I eat and one appears out of nowhere, but always at a time when a new stress gets introduced to my life. I think not getting enough sleep helps them start up too. I've tried everything to get them to stop too (tart cherries, tons of water etc) and the only thing that's consistent is colchicine. I take 2 pills and it's gone about 4 hours later, I don't need the 3rd pill like it says on the instructions. Also, I'm curious how many people take Metoprolol and have gout attacks.. it'd be an interesting thing to do a study on.
I take Metoprolol and now you mention it I took a double dose because my heart was racing and I wanted to shock it back to normal and I got the gout attack right away.
My first time getting gout, I’m a woman and 61. I read that shrimp and clams and mussels can be a trigger, well we were at the ocean and I had shrimp three times and clam chowder twice. It sure was good but now my big toe joint hurts like crazy! I’ll limit myself next time. Hope this is the first and last time!
Londoj823. As I don’t know which country you are in, I’m sure if brand names will help. I am in Ontario, Canada and purchase ‘natural Factors’ super strength red Cherry Concentrate at the health food store. The Cherry Concentrate is what you are after. I was told that I had gout but that it wasn’t all that bad, although the pain was. At the beginning I was taking 1000mg day until the pained went away and now one 500mg capsule a day . I do not remember why I started to take the same with the blue berry capsules. May not have been with the gout problem, may have been leg cramps but I do much better with both. I find them a little bit pricey but still less than prescriptions without the chemicals. The labels say to clear it with your doctor first (other meds) but I didn’t as I take none. You may also want to look up the gout diet if you haven’t already. I was very surprised at what was on there. Most people just say meat and red wine, no no. Good luck with the red cherry concentrate.
This is when mine started! I’m 23 and last year I started the Keto diet and I swear this is what causes these flares even after stopping the high fat low carb. 3 times so far. In a food processor chop up 1 Cucumber with peel 1 pineapple without peel 1 grapefruit without peel or pith 2 inches fresh ginger(not ginger powder) Thereafter blend in a blender and add 300ml water. Drink one or two small glasses a day before morning meals and before evening meals. Watch what triggers it. If it has started already take Colchicine and anti- inflammatory Continue drinking until it is finished. You should have relief for at least 2 months. Repeat this before you get another attack.
I want to share my experience about gout since I have it from 1990 until now, well what can i say :D but i success to reduce that very super painful gout attack, with not consume red meat, pork, seafood (squid, crabs, shrimp and other with high purines). I only consume chicken meat, fish with low purine category, lamb meat without its fat. don't drink beer, and other alcohol thing, especially with yeast in it, alcohol & yeast is forbidden. Sweet fructose syrup, yes, avoid any food/drink that contain high sugar level such like coca cola, soft drinks, power drinks, etc. take high dosage of vitamin C, I take 1000 mg every day with drink plenty of water, how plenty of water here's the formula : your weight x 30 ml = ..... cc/day. My weight 88 kg that means must drink : 88 kg x 30 ml = 2,64 Liter water minimum, if in sick condition and must take medicine, must drink more than 2,64 liter per day. Also the best way is losing weight, but be careful not to fast, because too fast losing weight can trigger the gout attack. for green vegetables , I avoid spinach, cabbage, asparagus, Kailan, red beans (don't eat at all) , Kale. @@tristansa5177 In my experience, avoid foods containing high levels of sugar and salt. little protein is needed. to avoid gout, we must continue to observe, if possible recorded per day, what we eat. Later we will know what foods our bodies avoid. because everyone is different in this case of gout. Red beans can quickly cause gout to me, but not necessarily to you. Maybe you can understand what I mean
I'm in India and can tell you about the foods in our diet that can trigger an attack and / or raise uric acid levels further: Alcohol in all forms Fermented foodstuffs Chickpeas and most other lentils and most of the pulses Red meat, seafood (in fact, all non vegetarian food) Some vegetables eg cauliflower, spinach, beetroot, fresh peas, mushrooms, broccoli and a few others High fat milk and high fat dairy products ...... and the list goes on and on. It is better to check on the internet about whatever food one intends to eat, whether it is permitted or not. The motto should be a focus on * adequate hydration * diet control * regular exercise
Gout flares can also be triggered when your uric acid level is decreasing...that’s why when starting medications many people get gout flares. If you are hydrating and cutting out trigger foods, for me it’s soda, and have a flare hopefully it is from decreasing uric acid levels.

I went on a huge binge of drinking soda that did include high fructose corn syrup, but it was so delicious (Ginger beer) I lost control. After drinking so much of it, I had my first intensely painful flare up and was diagnosed with gout.
I haven’t figured out my trigger yet but I just got over a “bout of gout.” Lasted 5 weeks to the day. The only thing that helped was over hydrating with water and 100% tart cherry juice and ibuprofen.
I have a number of things that might cause my gout attacks. I think stress has a lot to do with causing gout. Dehydration, beer, eating ham, Processed lunch meats. Fasting can cause gout. Any change in your diet can raise uric acid in your blood.

Tip from a fellow Gout sufferer. Treat gout as a food allergy. Keep a food diary and identify your triggers. I found my main trigger was ''wholemeal products'' such as wholemeal bread/biscuits/cookies/pasta and meat that uses bread crumbs as a filler - such as burgers and sausages. I then eliminated them from my diet and have been pain free for the past two years. I am no expert just a fellow sufferer and it worked for me. Stay safe and well people.

@@Staffys4Lyfe Sorry to hear of your distress. Simple answer is I eat and drink everything including alcohol. Treat it as an intolerance to a 'Food' or an 'Ingredient'. My trigger is 'wholemeal flour.' This is going to be rude - so apologies. If you are in pain - the cause is sitting in your system. YOU NEED TO REMOVE THE CAUSE. (have a shit). Eventually the pain will ease and disappear BUT may take two - three days. DO NOT EAT THE TRIGGER FOOD AGAIN AS THE PAIN WILL JUST KEEP GOING. Four tablets can help taken together (two paracetamol + two ibuprofen) Do not be tempted to take more than one or two times as these drugs will eventually aggravate the symptoms. Try to fast if you can, and only eat really safe foods. A little breast of chicken or white rice. HOWEVER these foods can be triggers in some individuals so be careful. Everyone is different and will have different triggers eg. (marshmallow/chocolate/seafood/beef all mentioned by some people.) Keep a food diary and I hope you feel better soon. Within a month of starting the ketogenic diet my gout just went away. I stopped taking my gout prevention meds (allopurinol) and have remained gout free for over 2 years. I also lost 45 pounds switching to the ketogenic diet. My experience is quite common and normal for gout sufferers who switch to a ketogenic diet.
It has been all upside and no downside for me. The worst thing I can say about the ketogenic diet is that it can be inconvenient and/or expensive when dining out or travelling. Almost impossible to find anything ketogenic at a fast food restaurant. If a restaurant serves anything ketogenic on the menu, it will be offered as a boutique specialty item that is among the priciest items on the menu. I primarily shop at the grocery store and cook at home.
was doing crazy starvation diet for on and off for like past 5 months .. and on day I had a gout or maybe according to doc. He said it’s inflammation but it was very painful. Do you think it will go back to normal once I start eating normally again ?? If it was gout.
@@sanpat2220 Start with 'safe' foods like veg/fruit/fish/chicken/rice and maybe pasta. If OK, add new foods each day or week until you identify your triggers. You need to look at the ingredients as well as the food itself and fluids as colouring and additives may cause a problem. Good luck and stay well my friend.

Celery & Black cherry juice does wonders and almost immediately gets rid of the pain.
I’ve noticed that I can almost tell the day before if I’m going to have a flare up. What I’ve done is take some ibuprofen and cherry tart extract and it normally does the trick.
I swear my gout is triggered by high stress. Not just one time, but multiple high stress situations piled up. Another one is exercising, I know it sounds weird but every time I start working out to lose weight (to avoid gout) I end up GETTING A GOUT FLARE! Am I the only one?

You are not the only one. I just had a gout flare. I just had a lot of stress over the multiple things. And I started exercising like rollerblading and lost about 8 pounds. Then I just had a gout flare. Granted I started drinking beer, but not much, two cans a day and smoking a one pack in a week, but I don't think that was the reason. It's weird but I believe sweating a lot by rollerblading and exercise brought on the gout.

I'm a healthy 37 year old and kept getting gout, no family history. It turns out 1 cup of water a day is not enough for the human body. I started drinking water like a normal person, about 2 liters or so a day, and no more gout.
That’s how I keep it at bay. I drink water like crazy, downside is I pee often..

Drink lots of water! Very important to avoid and treat flairs. Drink enough water to produce 2 liters of urine. In my opinion staying hydrated is the most important thing you can do

My husband triggers are stress and glucose/fructose/carbs. I believe it’s related to being insulin resistance. When my husband went low carb it all cleared no case in over one year. My husband did not over eat any of the foods. The reason beer is a trigger is because it’s high carb that becomes sugar in body and lead to insulin resistance same as fructose. Gout is associated with metabolic syndrome.

Yes I’ve researched gout a lot and it is a form of arthritis. I’ve been suffering with gout for about 5 years now. It’s really strange how my gout is triggered. I think the most consistent trigger is high fructose syrup drinks or food. I find stress is also a factor. I’m trying to drink more water to keep my system flushed better. I don’t drink alcohol but I do drink soft drinks too much and so I’m gonna have to remove those from my diet. Gout is very painful. People have ask me to describe it and the best I can come up with is imagine you have a severe burn and a broken bone in the same area. I wish there was a cure because this can really be debilitating and I’ve had to miss work a lot because of gout. Thank you for drawing attention to this horrible ailment.

It's my third time that I have been affected with gout.
First and second time,when it happened, there had been a stinging feeling to my big toe, swelling and slight darkening of skin.
I took the prescribed medicine and the four was addressed.
This is the third time it has been happening, so I did some research and found out that following foods aggravated the issue:
1. Beef
2. Foods with yeast
3. Caffeine (I used to have 3-4 cups of tea with milk)
4. Pulses
5. Branched Chain Amino Acid supplement
6. Whey Protein
However, the third time was less severe and quite bearable since I made a few changes to my diet;
1. Started having apple cider vinegar - a teaspoon in a cup of hot water with honey. 3 days a week on an empty stomach.
2. Quarter lemon squeezed into lukewarm water with honey. 4 days a week on an empty stomach.
3. Reduced my caffeine intake to 1 cup per day.
4. Started having fennel and cinnamon tea in the evening to avoid the craving for more caffeine.
5. Increased intake of water, earlier it was 8-9 glasses a day, now it is 11-12.
6. Reduced the intensity of exercise sessions, initially I used to do a 45 minute HIIT, 6 days a week. Afterwards, I tailored the workout to a 30 minute moderate intensity weight training session with an added 4 min TABATA HIIT, 5 days a week with a 30 minute yoga routine on remaining days.
7. Reduced beef intake by 25% per month.
I haven't yet taken medicine and feel quite better.
P. S. I don't drink alcohol.

After about 20 doctors a rheumatologist told me it was the change in uric acid levels that caused gout attacks. The more drastic the change the more likely to get an attack. The really surprising part was that dropping your uric acid levels too quickly can cause attacks.

I've been on 100mg allopurinol for about 5 years. No gout attacks since started. Used to have them about 4 times a year. Was originally on 300mg but I told my doctor I was experiencing slightly "weird" sensations at times. Weird sensations could have been caused by anything, really. Anyway, dialing it back to 100mg did not render it ineffective. I still register 6.0+ on my Uric Acid levels. My Uric Acid came back last month at 7.4. So yeah, makes sense what your Dr is saying. Maybe allopurinol just "stabilizes" the Uric Acid levels where there aren't wild swings. Not necessarily decreasing levels.
I'm 32, I was first diagnosed when I was 23. I've found that for me it's large amounts of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), some beer, fast weight loss (my guess is due to loss of water), and some exercise can trigger it in me as well. I'm one of the people who, unfortunately, have had it consistently since diagnosis. While I don't have attacks often anymore (and god those were the worst when I first was diagnosed), it has left me in a constant state of pain, which I've unfortunately adapted to. I say unfortunate because no one should have to adapt to daily pain.

I am so sorry to hear of your pain. People that don't have gout know nothing of extreme pain.
I have found that montmorency tart cherry juice concentrate helps me. It does not prevent an attack but it helps keep them from happening. I buy it at Meijer's. It isn't cheap but it makes a lot. I mix about a tablespoon or so in a glass of water. I think its good. I also mix up a jug and add some lemon and sweetener and keep it in the fridge. I haven't had a full blown-can't walk attack in a few years compared to many times a year. I hope you try it and it works.

I got it a 18 drinking beer.
Sugar is the big one then beer is the next one. It all depends how much you ingest. You can still enjoy these things but you might have to cut back on how much you ingest
My dad has been suffering from gout for years and years. Red meats and beer. He stopped eating shellfish, red meats, breads, everything BUT the booze. So, he would make himself better with garlic and other anti inflammatory foods, and stop drinking and as soon as he felt better he would go back to drinking. Needless to say, the gout spread to the knees, the arms, the hands, the feet, he swells up.
My only advice- stop the drinking.
Does he have a good diet? Daily citrus fruits, alkaline mineral water, no juices in cartons, no ice cream, no cakes, no sugary things, no potato crisps? He has to bin it and stay away from steaks.

Recently I have backed down the booze and up'd the stealing of the kids OJ in the mornings and organic cherry juice, just mine, no one else likes it (for both the curiousness of the cherries, and I like the glass jars), and I just acquired the worst gout attack to date, for me.
In the recent past, I have had flare ups around the ankles (now I understand to be mildly), still able to go to work, slowed the booze, up'd the water, and waited for crystals to dissolve, and could still function. All my mindsets at the time had it under control.
Now, age 42, two days ago, middle toes, largest toe joints, went absolutely mad. I am Down, I am Useless, I am pe'ode! Like I said, recently cut back on bad diets just cause I'm a Dad, and need a healthier lifestyle. We ironically had a few seafood dishes back to back last week, I been getting into the forbidden OJ (5 kiddoes under 12 and all mine so I'm told), and my personal cherry juice. BAM!! Can't walk. Am I being punished for changing my diet? Related to the OJ, seafood, and /or alcohol? I use to be sure, now I am not so sure. We are meat eaters, we will continue to eat med-rare steaks regardless of cost.

ONLY other thing I want to add is: I have a nurse in the family, I was an Air Ambulance pilot for some time, and I have never seen any of these other Medical Professionals ever agree with each other on much. Pilots don't either. Life's a garden, dig it, do the best you can.

Tart Organic Cherry juice. Try it, it works for me from not walking to walking in 12 hours. Drink an entire bottle by drinking a lot of it, then sip til gone, open another and sip til gone. It is a cure for me. 24 hours after it is nonexistent

I got the first most painful gout of my life 3 weeks ago. I thought I had broken my ankle. Mine was totally sugar and oatmeal with raisins. 15 years ago I had my first mild case of gout on my big toe. This time for three days I couldn't walk to the horrible pain in my ankle. What helped me was staying away from all the foods that are high in purines. Then for pain and clearing, ibuprofen, sulfer, major water drinking up to 14 cups of lemon water, lowfat milk, coffee, and cherry juice. My blood was just too acidic with too much uric acid. I hope this helps any one with gout.
I’m follow a strict ‘plant based diet’ and I still suffer. My triggers are dehydration and when I’m dehydrated even the littlest amount of beer or lager triggers it. I don’t drink alcohol much at all, but when these thing occur BANG! It’s thee most painful thing I’ve ever experienced!! I feel for anyone suffering from gout I really do!
My husband has it and it is brought on by stress. He does not eat meat or shellfish , does not drink alcohol or coffee either. He just had major surgery and his gout came on the day before . As he is not allowed strong painkillers when he came back from hospital i tried to give him cherry juice tart from health shop and after drinking it for 8 days (about 6 litres) it went away.
I have been in a Keto diet and practicing Intermittent fasting. I got a gout flare. I understand the body in order to get rid of death cells convert them to Uric acid. When you don’t eat enough protein your body consume your muscles protein producing more Uric acid. People with cancer produce a lot of Uric acid due to the amount of death cells.
Interesting comment - From the research ive done is uric acid is made from Purines which is essentially in everything, its the breaking down of DNA. So loosing muscle mass makes sense

Asparagus caused my first gout bout. Now, I can feel an attack coming. I drink lots of water, take Advil and eat dried cherries. It works for me. Oh, and I stretch the affected joint. And ice afterwards.
Triggers for me: stress on my feet. Eg. walking a lot, using the rowing machine. After a month long miserable gout attack 3 months ago I made the following changes:
- stopped using rowing machine
- cut down alcohol
- switched BP med from diuretic
- drinking lemon water in the morning and hydrating throughout the day
- taking vitamin C supplement.
So far so good.

From my experience... what triggered gout for me is dehydration, which messes up your kidneys due to a lack of water and something else... And the the second problem is that drinking water does not solve the problem. Here is why, it is an electrolyte imbalance!! When I work outdoors intensively I sweat profusely and few days after it shows up. When I replenish my electrolytes, it does not show up. For examples the MIO water enhancer with electrolytes :) Cheers

Yes, I noticed being dehydrated and then eating a heavy, salty meal… right afterwards I swell up in my toes and calves then my fingers and wrists. Not good .
Tart Cherry Extract, Celery Seed Extract, and two times a week a Glass of water with Baking Soda, a Great Help. I had Gout every 2 or 3 Weeks, Beer did me in. Certain Foods would Get Me, Sugar makes Uric Acid twice as Much as anything Else. I`ve had Gout for 35 years, also there`s a Hereditary Factor. Make the changes if your as Tired of Gout as I was. I came here because I love Bob and Brad and was hoping they addressed the issue of gout. This is the 2nd attack this year that has hit me in the ankles and left me bed ridden. Thank you all for the suggestions. I'm still not sure what my triggers are, but I'll keep trying to figure it out.

Abandon: Crab, tuna, pop, red meat, mushrooms, alcohol, and dehydration. If you treat these few items like poison, all other like and kind items will give birth to discretion. There are plenty of other things to eat to choose from. Drink water at an inconvenient rate. Keep tart cherry supplements at the ready and get them on board asap to help mitigate pain. @@g_pazzini Sugary food is fine as long as it's in moderation and balanced with fibre (i.e. fruits), unless you explicitly have a fruit trigger. It's processed foods with added sugar that you need to watch out for.

I have finnally found a cure for me that works in about 8 hours sooner if i can catch it in time: immediately start eating a vegetarians diet during the attack followed by eating lots of fresh pineapples and cherries, the main key is lemon water every hour or so and every 2 hours eat a big chunk of fresh ginger and fresh garlic. Also have several sips of apple cider vinegar. Follow up with staying in bed foot elevated and keep meditating pale green light visualising going thru your feet or effected area. I found out that when i took ACV and 1 lime/lemon, i started to burp out some weird smell from my stomach. Then my flare gout is gone like an instant 😃. Not really sure what happened but i found out it is interesting.
By only ACV or only lime will not have the optimum effect which i tried before.

A month ago I had a severe attack of Gout in the toes, and ankles on both legs, and in the knee on the left leg, Was not able to walk for some days. Was hospitalised for about ten days. I now hav made a total change in my food supplies. It's terrible pain.
Low thyroid levels can cause gout, that is what did it in me. When your thyroid level drops it slows down your metabolism. It’s the mechanism that animals use to hibernate . When your metabolism drops your kidneys stop working as good as they should. This causes a build up of uric acid.in the blood and gout will start up. With me it’s in all my joints not just one or two. I take levothyroxin every day as my immune system killed my thyroid. If the doctors try to decrease the amount of meds I am on the uric acid starts climbing and the gout starts up. SO, if you have gout have your thyroid checked.
Having a gout episode right now. Am a teetotaler and vegetarian. So Gout doesn't discriminate 😀.

Gout, I have had a few times, even in my knees and shoulders. I took Tart Cherrie extract 4 times a day for 3 days and the Gout all left. This is an old remedy and worked well for me. Drinking Coffee also helps.

I just experienced my first gout attack. Im very strict as an eater and I know that I incorporated red meat into my diet when I moved out west 3yrs ago. Before that I ate a lot of chicken n veggies. Im a NON-drinker, no significant sweets or fructose. Im into fitness so it was a set back. Im backing out the red meat as I believe this has direct correlation to MY gout flare up. From my research n dissecting the large amount of conflicting information, Ive instituted organic tart cherry juice, use of dark cherries in a smoothie, turmeric with high level curcuminoids n low/no fat dairy and nuts and seeds. Hoping this mitigates the chance of a flare up. Strength n luck to all those that have suffered this Excruciatingly painful condition 💪🏼

Yes, there are Monitors for sale similar to Glucose monitors. You stick your finger and place drop of blood on a strip, then place into monitor
My brother gets the crystals from beef and alcohol! He then formed two kidney stones! Dehydration plays a huge role for him.
I am having my second battle with a acute gout attack. The first time was painful, but 5 years later this gout attack the pain has been unbearable. I have it in my ankle and know most of my foot has become numb. I was drinking nothing, but soda and I am sure that is what brought it on.

I’m currently going through a bout with gout. 1st time ever in my knee. Going on my 4th week as it moves to different locations. Dr prescribed allopurinol 300 6yrs ago. I’m also on colchicine .6mg and norco’s. I received my 1 cortisone shot ever to relieve some swelling that slowly worked after a week. Still can’t put any weight on it. I noticed years ago organ meats set it off, due to reoccurring bouts at around Thanksgiving, organs in gravy..... also from brined turkey. I do believe after 3 years w/o issue this case was caused by dehydration(heat exhaustion) with a couple ice cold Gatorade’s which I haven’t had in years. This is the 2 case I’ve had that has lasted multiple weeks, one lasted 2 1/2 months, bout was so bad a powdery substance formed outside on my skin, dr suggested crystallization. Not fun in any way, wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Thanks for hearing my story. PS, I’ve tried all the remedies cherries, cherry juice, alkaline drinks, cbd’s, essential oils and I even purchased an ice man power pump for long term chilling. Cbd’s and the constant icing have helped the most.
Mine moves down from one of my knees into the toe on the same foot and then crosses over to the other foot and up to the knee. Often in one of my elbows all at the same time. It usually takes more than a month. I don't get much sleep.
Stop all fruit consumption for at least three weeks and you may be surprised with the results.

My big toe joint pain seems more consistent, and doesn't really flare up or ache as bad as it sounds like some folks does. And rubbing that joint, particularly the top side is where and when I'll really feel it.
Turkey, drinking alcohol multiple days in a row, seafood with high purines all seem to trigger gout. I also get a gout flare up in an area where I get an injury. Gout seems to follow and flare up that area where I get an injury at.
I have that same issue with a flare up occurring at the site of a previous injury. In fact that’s how I first got diagnosed was after an injury to my big toe that never seemed to heal.
DEHYDRATION! Number one reason for gout. Also fasting too long causing rapid weight loss EVEN when on a healthy diet. Also the secondary causes are due to the dehydration factor. Alcohol is extremely dehydrating.

Thanks for your input. I have been rollerblading a lot which makes me sweat a lot. I was happy that I lost about 10 pounds. But I was sweating every day and I drank two cans of beers every night for past four weeks . Then I just had gout flare last night after rollerblading. Now, I will make sure that I drink plenty of fluids and cut down on drinking so I will not be subject to extreme dehydration.

Only 20% with increased uric acid levels experience gout pain.. In other words the human body is designed to tolerate uric acid crystals anyway.. Therefore I don't believe the crystals are the real reason.. Instead a LACK of certain elements could cause these crystals to become harmful.. Think of something like: "crystals to X" ratio.. Just like the oil in the engine that prevents the heat of elements rubbing with each other.. Excessive meat could be depleting or blocking this X that normally would avoid the gout pain.. Scientists must find what X is and raise or restore that instead of trying to reduce uric acid.. Maybe X is "cortisol" and pain starts especially when there is an excessive cortisol drop in the body based on chronic stress and that shows itself mostly at nights, maybe X is a certain vitamin, a certain mineral.. Maybe X is "water".. Just thinking out loud.. Orthodox studies always focus on isolating the suspected elements... But Isolation kills the idea how the micro elements in our bodies interact with each other.. It ignores the mechanism as a whole which if they were included could have changed the research outcome drastically.. My two cents.. Peace.. Out ✌
So I was actually Diagnosed at 19 as having Gout. I'm now 31 and have had many flares through out the year, but its interesting to hear others stories and what triggers theirs. When I first went to the doctors, they gave me 3 full pages of foods I was to avoid, over time I found my Trigger foods and honestly because of the pain I just avoid them all together. Red meat is on the list but I eat alot of red Meat daily(Cow) and I'm fine, If I eat Deer, my gout will flare up, if I eat Pork, that night my gout will flare up. I can't eat seafood any more, but I found that I can eat tilapia and be ok. Nuts I avoid all together as well. If I eat Almonds it will flare up, but Almond milk I'm fine. I can't eat peanuts or peanut butter any more.. I have definitely done alot of research on this matter, but each person is different to and extent. I also found that the Hops in beer is what causes that to be so bad, but liquor doesn't affect me.
Bradley, do a keyword search for "ketogenic diet" and "gout" and you will see that a ketogenic diet is a highly effective non-medical dietary approach to preventing gout and a host of other interrelated metabolic problems stemming from insulin resistance. The ketogenic diet is a high fat, moderate protein, low carbohydrate diet (< 20 grams per day of net carbs). Carbs are not your friend with with high fructose corn syrup, sugar, grains (wheat, corn, rice), starchy vegetables like potatoes, and fruit juice (orange, apple, etc.) all making the worst of the worst list of carbs.
Gout is a metabolic inflammatory response caused by insulin resistance which is in turn caused by years of chronically high blood sugar, which is in turn caused by a high daily intake of carbohydrates typical of the standard American diet. I am 57. I was first diagnosed with gout at age 24. I suffered from frequent severe gout attacks for over 30 years until I started the ketogenic diet about 2 years ago. Within a month of starting the ketogenic diet my gout just went away. I stopped taking my gout prevention meds (allopurinol) and have remained gout free for over 2 years. I also lost 45 pounds switching to the ketogenic diet. My experience is quite common and normal for gout sufferers who switch to a ketogenic diet.
Oddly, many of the trigger foods you listed are are highly recommended on a ketogenic diet. Carbohydrates are the root cause of chronically high blood sugar leading to insulin resistance and gout. If you were to switch to a ketogenic diet you may find you are able to go back to enjoying the foods you listed as trigger foods.

@@fattofitguy I'm doing great, I maybe have 1 flare up a year now, sometimes not for a for years in-between attacks. I watch what I eat, and take cherry Tart pills twice a day, and if I feel a attack coming on ill add potassium citrate powder. Stops it cold
Beer and shellfish are the killers for me. There are a few prescribed meds that really help. To end flare ups quickly, I’ve had success taking both colchicine as well as separately taking indomethacin. Besides changing your diet and eating habits, allopurinol can be taken as a preventative to help control your uric acid levels.

Just saw this video. I follow Bob and Brad but hadn't seen this video yet. I take allopurinol (prescription drug) which cuts way back on the gout attacks, but they still occur every few months. I found that if i also take some form of cherry (fresh, juice or capsule) with the allopurinol that i can usually expect to have an attack only about every year or year and one half...I ran out of the cherry capsules i take about a month ago and kept forgetting to pick some up at the vitamin store...sure enough, last week i got gout in my left knee...Cherries are a miracle drug to help prevent gout. If you have severe gout like me you should consider getting a prescription from your Doc for allopurinol as well.
I've suffered from gout for 20 year tried different diets tablets even stopped drinking alcohol it was always sore but really bad 2 or 3 times a year. I started smoking cannabis totally cured and back on the alcohol

I barely eat sugar, don't drink alcohol and eat meat about once a week. I still have gout. My rheumatologist believes it's a simple case of my kidney doesn't break down purine normally. My flare-ups seem pretty random since I barely consume some trigger food but eat others (broccoli, tofu, fungi) almost daily. It doesn't seem related to my food consumption :/
I would say food that dehydrates you seems to be more likely to trigger a flare-up (e.g. red meat, organ meat etc.). So water seems to be the key. There are inexpensive medications available out there with little side effects so if you are consistent with your meds you should be fine. I do live in a country with universal healthcare so the price thing may be different for peeps in the US tho.

Another thing I forgot to mention in my OP is salt. Breaking down salt takes a lot of water from your system.
I just got diagnosed with gout in the usual big toe joint. Geez it hurt like hell and I thought my toe was broken or dislocated! Could barely walk! I also have finger joint and elbow soreness. It is a mystery how this has happened though. I have been a vegetarian for around 3yrs so I eat a lot of vegetables, eat fish, drink a lot of spring water and the occasional iced tea (no corn syrup listed in the ingredients). I don’t drink alcohol. I do also eat grains. I like a lot of salt on my food. I have a kidney stone and I’m on the borderline of diabetes. Now the slow process of eliminating different foods from my diet to see what the culprit is. 😞
Just at tail end of my first attack which has lasted two weeks...probably acute pain for at least 4 or 5 days. Many sleepless nights. And trying to get my head around what changes are necessary. While I ate all the healthy stuff, I also had a lot of potential triggers. I have stopped drinking alcohol. And eating red meat and fish (at least while attack in progress). Cutting back on fructose and sugars (life-long sweet tooth). Looking out for yeast. Basically stripped out all of the stuff I love from my diet :( But there is a lot of contradictory and hard-to-verify info....esp anecdotal. And, in the end, it's possible diet may not be that important at all.

haven't had a gout attack in years. I got rid of everything that had yeast in is. Bread, beer, alcohol, ect. Also I cut out all sugar. I think now that I am doing a Keto/Carnivore diet and not had any attacks in a year and a half is nothing that causes inflammation. Hope this helps. Oh ya I got my first case of gout when in my early 30's.

Have suffered from gout for many years. I have recently changed to a vegan plant based diet but this is not preventing attacks! I drink minimal alcohol and a lot of water but I do also drink fizzy soft drinks daily which is most likely the trigger
Just got over a gout attack 11/14/23, very painful.
My first attack came when I was in the hospital for pancreatitis. My feet swelled up and it was painful. Turns out I had my first case.of gout. I've had flare ups ever since. I'm an alcoholic, so mine are due to drinking. The most recent one came after three days of no drinking and bam!! Gout flare up. I can thankfully walk this time and am able to work while sitting. I'm only 38.

I first got gout as 34 yr old woman, healthy lifestyle, pescatarian low BMI no soda etc- other than 3-5 drinks a weeks I did not partake in obvious triggers. BUT I believe my gout is affected largely by genetics, all of my grandparents suffered from gout before they were 65+ and my triggers seemed to be not consuming enough water (dehydration) and being on my feet for longer than 6 hours. If I have a lobster roll and a beer I know I have to stay off my feet. I have found relief with using a Cannabis lotion (1:1 CBD/THC ratio) as soon as I get the telltale sign of a hot itchy tender spot somewhere on my foot I massage the lotion in, this seems to help a lot.

I don't have triggers. I feel like it just comes on randomly, mostly overnight but sometimes it'll start in the afternoon. Since I'm on my feet all day, they kinda get sore any ways so I'm often wondering is it gout or just fatigue? Sure, I've put myself in a serious gout penalty box if I eat ONLY meat for like 5 days but other than that I have no idea.
Black cherries seem to help gout. Eating no meats or sugars helps as well when there’s flare ups. Apple cider vinegar, turmeric , cbd oil...
I have clients with gout- they say carbs- meats- rich fishes like salmon, sugars all give them gout flare ups. Never massage gout. I do send love energy into the area.

I’m 32 years old and have been dealing with gout on and off for about 8 years. I take allopurinol daily along with multiple vitamins for preventing inflammation. If I have 2 beers I get a gout attack. If I eat any tuna I get a gout attack. If I take Aleve as soon as I feel it coming I can usually prevent a full on flair up. I also have celiac and found if I consume any gluten it can also cause a flare up.
I'm female and developed gout in my big toe at age 22. I've looked at the inflammatory food list. I don't eat hardly any refined carbohydrates, I avoid sugar (have never been a soda drinker), eat red meat about once or twice a week at the most, rarely have shrimp or shellfish of any sort, I don't consume margarine or shortening, don't eat fried foods (I'm gluten free besides), can't eat french fries (my body retains too much of the potassium in potatoes), and I eat all the anti-inflammatory foods that I can (that I'm not allergic to). Mostly I've been eating a Mediterranean diet my entire adult life.

My number one is soda. I did a test after not having soda for a year, had ZERO gout flare ups during that time, I drank 2 cans of soda in one day. The next day I had a massive flare up. I always get gout in my toes like most people. I recognized that my toes would turn purple after sitting in a chair for periods of time. My wife suggested I purchase a pair of leg massager and best compression socks to help circulation. I can now drink soda and pretty much anything I want, at a reasonable level, as long has I wear my socks on those days. Zero flare ups. I don’t take alopurinal or anything anymore. They have been a a Godsend!
First got gout about 10 years ago after having a large piece of liver in a diner in Albany, NY. Couldn't believe the pain and thought I had kicked the end of the bed during the night. Haven't had liver since, I also get triggered by OJ particularly the stuff they serve in hotels at breakfast. Was prescribe Alupurinol but didn't seem to work as effectively as taking some Ibuprofen when I get the first twinge of a flair up.

I'm a physically fit male with hereditary gout; my father, brother & son have it. I recently experienced a 2 week gout attack in the big toe following 9 gout free years. I did a complete analysis of everything I ate in the week leading up to the attack. I like to eat healthy & had several high protein 'Quorn' vegetarian meals. The weather was hot & I failed to increase my fluid intake. I should have seen the first warning signs when I noticed that my pee was frothy. This is a sign of protein in the urine & kidneys under stress. Some research revealed 'Quorn' contains high levels of Mycoproteins which are high in purines & this elevated my uric acid levels. The week ended at a friend's BBQ where I ate sausages, burgers & several grain based ales. This was the trigger to already elevated levels of uric acid, a perfect storm! At 2am the following morning my big toe was pounding! If I were to give any advice on 9 gout free years it would be everything in moderation & drink at least five pints of water per day to flush uric acid out of the body! I will never be so complacent again!

I'm getting mixed messages with my computer research on gout. Some say coffee, asparagus, beans okay while other sites say avoid them. I think my flare up came from an asprin a day. Seems the last time I was taking an asprin a day my toe flared up. The gout went away when I stopped taking the asprin or it just may have been a coincidence. I'm drinking a lot of water now.

[2] Many sources say that asparagus doesn’t cause gout, but for some people asparagus (like spinach) is a trigger food, regardless of how much purines it has. I’ve having an attack right now, caused by the oxalates in spinach. [3] Aspirin (salicylic acid) definitely elevates uric acid levels.

I notice that mine acts up mostly when dehydrated. I can have the typical trigger foods and drinks with no issues provided I'm drinking plenty of water consistently.
Take Quercetin 250-500 mg a day. Also Vitamin C 500 mg a day. Limit meats, beer and high fructose corn (soda mostly)
I have osteoarthritis, especially in my knee. When I went on the keto diet, I had a "bout of gout" . I tried several months later to go on the keto diet again, and again I had a gout flare-up. Don't know what part of the diet causes this, but I am avoiding this diet.

Causes: Meat, of any kind, and even fish. Whole food plant based diet is the best way of eating for lowering inflammation, uric acid and preventing gout.
Hydrochlorothiazide was the main reason for getting gout. My Rheumatologist thought my doctor should have discontinued HZTZ as soon as I got my test results. It took 4 years for my doctor to figure it out.
Cured my gout by adopting a ketogenic diet and intermittent/extended fasting. Sugar and grains are inflammatory. Get rid of them. And gut health -- critical. ACV and probiotic daily.
Question about your keto diet-do you have a person you go to for help (like a keto dietician)? I've been watching Dr. Eric Berg's channel and it all seems so overwhelming, but the comments from everyone tell me that keto is the way to go. But I definitely need someone's help in getting started with it. I can't seem to find anyone in my area who could direct me on this lifetime diet change. The intermittent fasting is surprisingly not so tough for me, it's just finding the right foods. There aren't any farmer's markets in my area for me to get organic foods, either. :c(

First time gout attack, 53 morbidly obese, type 2 diabetes last 6 years (stable sugar level 5.9 since 1990) Usually drink 8-10 cups of tea per day with 2 teaspoons brown sugar. Onset appears to be dehydration drank only 4 cups tea. Usual diet low carb high protein last 3 years, seafood about 500 grams per week. was drinking about 1lt a week beetroot juice last 2 month.(alcohol nil). Took the 3 tablets prescribed by doctor, 24 hours later pain low.
I've had very rare gout attacks for a few years now. I believe it's mostly stress that causes mine to flare up as I can go a few months changing very little what I eat and one appears out of nowhere, but always at a time when a new stress gets introduced to my life. I think not getting enough sleep helps them start up too. I've tried everything to get them to stop too (tart cherries, tons of water etc) and the only thing that's consistent is colchicine. I take 2 pills and it's gone about 4 hours later, I don't need the 3rd pill like it says on the instructions.
Also, I'm curious how many people take Metoprolol and have gout attacks.. it'd be an interesting thing to do a study on.

My first time getting gout, I’m a woman and 61. I read that shrimp and clams and mussels can be a trigger, well we were at the ocean and I had shrimp three times and clam chowder twice. It sure was good but now my big toe joint hurts like crazy! I’ll limit myself next time. Hope this is the first and last time!
For me, blueberry and red cherry concentrate are a must. I take it in capsule form. Everyday or I pay dearly with pain and or discomfort.

Londoj823. As I don’t know which country you are in, I’m sure if brand names will help. I am in Ontario, Canada and purchase ‘natural Factors’ super strength red Cherry Concentrate at the health food store. The Cherry Concentrate is what you are after. I was told that I had gout but that it wasn’t all that bad, although the pain was. At the beginning I was taking 1000mg day until the pained went away and now one 500mg capsule a day . I do not remember why I started to take the same with the blue berry capsules. May not have been with the gout problem, may have been leg cramps but I do much better with both. I find them a little bit pricey but still less than prescriptions without the chemicals. The labels say to clear it with your doctor first (other meds) but I didn’t as I take none. You may also want to look up the gout diet if you haven’t already. I was very surprised at what was on there. Most people just say meat and red wine, no no. Good luck with the red cherry concentrate.
Stress. I know when its going to flare almost 100% of the time when i get worked up.
Keto diet. The relative high protein with meats is what gets my flare up going. Citric acid seems to help (lime juice) and apple cider vinegar

Feeling the same but have been eating shrimp, cauliflower, and asparagus. Also not drinking much water. No electrolytes which I think are very important with keto. Ordered some natural pills for gout online.
In a food processor chop up
1 Cucumber with peel
1 pineapple without peel
1 grapefruit without peel or pith
2 inches fresh ginger(not ginger powder)
Thereafter blend in a blender and add 300ml water.
Drink one or two small glasses a day before morning meals and before evening meals.
Watch what triggers it. If it has started already take Colchicine and anti- inflammatory
Continue drinking until it is finished.
You should have relief for at least 2 months. Repeat this before you get another attack.

I want to share my experience about gout since I have it from 1990 until now, well what can i say :D but i success to reduce that very super painful gout attack, with not consume red meat, pork, seafood (squid, crabs, shrimp and other with high purines). I only consume chicken meat, fish with low purine category, lamb meat without its fat. don't drink beer, and other alcohol thing, especially with yeast in it, alcohol & yeast is forbidden. Sweet fructose syrup, yes, avoid any food/drink that contain high sugar level such like coca cola, soft drinks, power drinks, etc. take high dosage of vitamin C, I take 1000 mg every day with drink plenty of water, how plenty of water here's the formula : your weight x 30 ml = ..... cc/day. My weight 88 kg that means must drink : 88 kg x 30 ml = 2,64 Liter water minimum, if in sick condition and must take medicine, must drink more than 2,64 liter per day. Also the best way is losing weight, but be careful not to fast, because too fast losing weight can trigger the gout attack. for green vegetables , I avoid spinach, cabbage, asparagus, Kailan, red beans (don't eat at all) , Kale. @@tristansa5177 In my experience, avoid foods containing high levels of sugar and salt. little protein is needed. to avoid gout, we must continue to observe, if possible recorded per day, what we eat. Later we will know what foods our bodies avoid. because everyone is different in this case of gout. Red beans can quickly cause gout to me, but not necessarily to you. Maybe you can understand what I mean

It is better to check on the internet about whatever food one intends to eat, whether it is permitted or not.
The motto should be a focus on
* adequate hydration
* diet control
* regular exercise
Gout flares can also be triggered when your uric acid level is decreasing...that’s why when starting medications many people get gout flares. If you are hydrating and cutting out trigger foods, for me it’s soda, and have a flare hopefully it is from decreasing uric acid levels.
I'm a 73 yr. old female. Had a few gout attacks in my toes....just in the last year. Juiced celery & added it to Ocean Spray's 5 cal. cherry/cranberry juice. Bamm...Gone!
I went on a huge binge of drinking soda that did include high fructose corn syrup, but it was so delicious (Ginger beer) I lost control. After drinking so much of it, I had my first intensely painful flare up and was diagnosed with gout.

Raw pineapple and orange juice set mine off like a wildfire it’s horrible. Takes 2-3 weeks to go away even using meds.

I haven’t figured out my trigger yet but I just got over a “bout of gout.” Lasted 5 weeks to the day. The only thing that helped was over hydrating with water and 100% tart cherry juice and ibuprofen.
I have a number of things that might cause my gout attacks.
I think stress has a lot to do with causing gout. Dehydration, beer, eating ham,
Processed lunch meats. Fasting can cause gout. Any change in your diet can raise uric acid in your blood.
