If I remember right, the Cadillac big block motors (472/500) are around 100 pounds lighter than a chevy 454. they are only a bit heavier than a 350, cool project!
Finally somebody who knows how to preload a wheel bearing. So many on UA-cam set the preload way to tight. Best bet is to take the spacer/adapter off and put a quadrajet back on. If you ever want to learn how to tune a quadrajet, just ask me. I worked in a Cadillac dealership from 1979 on, so I defiantly know how to tune a quadrajet. I'm really interested in this build. Good chance this is a 472 not a 500.With the HEI distributor the only car that had the 500 was the Eldorado. Check the numbers! Either way that engine should have the torque to make that boat fly!
The Quadrajet was the best carby ever made in my opinion. Holleys tend to be more like a bucket tipping heaps of fuel in the engine but the Q-jet metering is just so variable they can run from a 253ci V8 up to a 500ci V8 and deliver outstanding performance, drivability and fuel economy but not a lot of people know how to set them up properly. We would usually look up the factory jets, metering rods and hangers for a particular cubic inch engine and go from there. Lots of fun times tuning them. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

I noticed the prop is directly bolted to the crankshaft, prop's are not designed to turn more than about 2700 rpm. You would need to install a PSRU Propeller Speed Reduction Unit to be able to run the engine to redline and the prop at its max efficiency so just be careful running it as is
Its a caddy boat.. No need for gearbox. At 72 inches the prop can spin up to 3200rpms. More than enough to push that thing. But yes you dont want to spin it any faster. Caddys were made for low rpm. Unless its a built caddy you dont want to gearbox that engine for higher RPMs..

Back in the day the cheapest and best thing to use to clean out the motor inside was diesel. Doesnt how bad it was. always worked. Cut the ignition and just have it spinning over and replacing the diesel until it came out clean. It would clean all the oil passages as well. Pushrods. Diesel has its own lubricant in it so it would leave a flim on everything to help it from rusting as well on the inside. When done just toss in some cheap oil and let it rip. Obviously Diesel wasn't going to help a locked up motor. Love the videos btw 👍

Good stuff brother. The old girl is ready for some new shenanigans. Looking forward to the maiden. I can't believe we got that gem for $14,000. You're welcome.
You need to check into balancing that propeller. It’s not that hard to do it at home. There’s also a run out once you bolted to the crankshaft you put a pointer and then rotate the propeller and see how far away it is from the pointer if you rotate it to the next hand of the propeller, and you put shims underneath the back of the propeller to get it equal
Hey guys might want to check the direction that the prop should turn. Looks like she's gonna be a sucker not a blower. I made the same mistake, ended up mounting the prop to the front of the engine and turning the motor around.
just a heads up i noticed the motor spins anti clockwise looking at the flywheel the way your prop is pitched its gonna throw wind towards the front instead of being a pusher prop!
New subscriber here. I love these types of videos! Resurrecting an old boat or vehicle and getting 'em back on the water/road. Too cool! That motor sounds badass bud! Can't wait for the sea trials
Unbelievable! Truly Redneck Engineering at its finest! Your wife is amazing, when she got out into the muck and helped push the boat out! My wife would have maybe helped me too but there would be a few choice words!
Crazy good show. All the elements line up perfectly. Filming is great. Good timing, super knowledgeable host etc.
Chris NEVER ceases to amaze me! From the abandoned boats to that "Willy's?" Jeep (wow that's the most rusted thing I ever saw including the stuff "Restored" even does LOL). He's actually work a full time job as a Mechanic as well as doing all the insanely cool projects and work he does at home and for us on youtube. R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Chris is what it means to me. Sock it to me, sock it to me! LOL. OH YEA! YEEEAAA! And BOYS respect your Grandma!
You guys are amazing people I try to watch every video you guys put out it's like my happy place living life to the fullest is the best way
Good job Chris!!! I couldn't help but think however ... your neighbors must LOVE you!!!
Good stuff brother. The old girl is ready for some new shenanigans. Looking forward to the maiden. I can't believe we got that gem for $14,000. You're welcome.
Lol.
It would really sound good with a set of headers!👍
Very cool! I'm amazed that Caddy engine runs as well as it does 👍☮️
The Cadillac 500 cu in. engine is a highly prized mill,....... Too bad about all that water intrusion! Cheers Chris.
Great video can't wait to see part 2
Thanks Bigfoot and part two coming soon!
Great channel, no BS straight and to the point!
I love your channel, your knowledge is overwelming
Hey guys might want to check the direction that the prop should turn. Looks like she's gonna be a sucker not a blower. I made the same mistake, ended up mounting the prop to the front of the engine and turning the motor around.
a 472 and a 500 are basically the same engine only diff. cubes same block, diff bore stroke. good luck , they use them in the Florida air boats.
Wow w wowiwnssqbcwuwpompnbpomppom pom
Cool but expensive project.
You two are a great couple.
Good luck to you both .
Kudos to your music performances too.
just a heads up i noticed the motor spins anti clockwise looking at the flywheel the way your prop is pitched its gonna throw wind towards the front instead of being a pusher prop!
New subscriber here. I love these types of videos! Resurrecting an old boat or vehicle and getting 'em back on the water/road. Too cool! Did you guys even pop the valve covers to look at the valve train? Didn't look like it, but hey, whatever floats your boat!!!! Doh!!!! Keep these videos coming, PLEASE!!!!!
I also try to salvage anything that might still have a pulse!!
Namer for your air boat?....
Green Stretch
I like the way you improvise! Very clever.
