I started learning guitar in 2020 and had this video saved since then. I would always come back and learn a little bit of this song at a time as it felt too overwhelming at the start. Today I finally put all the parts together and it felt great to play along with the original recording. Thanks Justin for another excellent tutorial.

I sang my heart out to Space Oddity when I was 10 years old and it was No. 1 in the UK 1975 ... the melancholic deep space loneliness of that first opening strummed Fmaj7 chord has stayed with me since ... now I'm 50 years old ... most songs get used up over x number of listens, but Space Oddity remains wondrous to me 40 years later ... RIP David Bowie

Wow! I have played this song since it was released and you made a huge change in the way I play it now!! I just love the way you ALWAYS go back to the artist's way of playing AND making it obvious that everythins is about choices. There is always another chord or way to render a song and by teaching us how you hear it and or see it, you are showing a remarkable sense of ethic for both viewers and artists. I just love your channel Sir and from the bottom of my heart and in all sincerity, thank you for all the work you put into this! I watched a few tutorials of this great classic and no one seems to want to try to explain the psychedelic little instrumental after ".........may God's love be with you". I did read your disclaimer about the tasty electric solos. I have listened to different versions and it seems there are several ways it is done. It never occurred to me to use a pick scratch. I find that keeping the D chord fingered after the pause and then moving that shape up the fretboard (with effects) whilst strumming seems to work well. Of course you need to build up to a crescendo, emphasiisng the first beat of each bar, speeding up your strumming (straight 8s) and intensifying it as you move up the fretboard, say to the octave of the regular open D. A Deluxe Memory Man or Behringer Time Machine seems to work well, but other effects could be added, maybe flanger, tremolo or both. Different versions done by Bowie have variations of this little instrumental and it lends itself to experimentation. To me, this instrumental is an integral part of the song, especially if you are in party mood and it is turned up a little loud! It would be interesting to see how the D shape coupled with your suggestion of the pick scratch would work. The idea, I think is to make it sound a bit chaotic, which seems to be an ingredient of psychedelia.
BTW, I enjoy your tutorials because they are accurate, concise and thorough and you explanations have all the right details. Many thanks. RIP David.

Thank you for this lesson! I have to play this sing soon and I was having trouble with the sound of the D7. I had tried putting the 7 in the bass and leaving it out on the 2nd string, which sounded better than a typical D7, but the F# in that you put in the bass solves the whole issue. The 3rd in the bass keeps the 7 in the high end from dominating the sound of the chord.
On a less mundane note, thank you for making David Bowie accessible to so many people now that we've lost the man himself.

Yeah that Fmaj7/E really is the space oddity chord, the quark quaternion space tension chord, sets the whole feel when it vamps back and forth w E minor, cool sound . A lot of times Bowies stuff is core acoustic guitar , but w overdubs and studio magic overtop is different. Never stopped to figure this one out, I was just staring off into the sky today, nice day, watching the loudspeaker roll by, space oddity just sort of fit the moment, how cool

Really cool version. I like the fact that you try to be as close as possible to how David Bowie played it. Sounds so much better. Many thanks for all the tips and tricks ...

Great video again! The main reason David did not use bar cords was that he did not play guitar that often and found it very difficult to play a bar on an acoustic! Some people just don't have the strength in their wrist to accomplish this unless they do exercises to strengthen them...Keep up the great work and I'll see you on UA-cam!

I've noticed that Jimi Hendrix also seemed to prefer using his thumb this way, instead of the classic bar chords. But he had really big hands, so my guess he found it easier that way. I've tried it myself over the years, but I really suck at using the thumb instead of bar chords, lol.

Thanks Justin - your teaching gets better and better.
One thought: Bowie probably wrote this song on his Hagstrom 12 string, which probably means he didn't use bar chords.

15:40 - Justin you're ace. I could not believe that this G-Chord actually is also an E-minor. Then checked again. And of course youre right. First Em is the parallel minor Chord to G - so apparently they share a lot of notes together. the notes you have from high to low (with funcitons) are e=1, d=7,B=5,G=3, D=7 and E=1 again. So just your perfect Em with all the necessary notes.

Perfect. I cant see anything wrong with the chords. I also like how you sang the low vocal so I could sing along and do the high vocal. We sounded pretty nice together...

Question: 7:40 Do we follow the same strumming pattern? Down, up - down, up - up - down - down - up - down ? Or did he change it?

I have been playing a long time and I just discovered your lessons. I have been wanting to learn some Bowie and these chords are so similar to chords I use in my own writings. Fun stuff, well explained. Thanks from well across the pond!
