he's at that level where you can see his hands trying to go through some chords before deciding on one.. must be overwhelming to decide what chord to use when your mind tells you hundreds of options.

Whether or not you "master" multiple instruments or not, playing more than one instrument can give you a wide sense of your space and roll in the music. It makes you empathetic, not sympathetic musically. Jacob Collier's grasp of most instruments at this early age shows a holistic understanding of what music truly is.

Phrasing is a key element inside of melody and rhythm. To become a master of melody, you must first become a master of phrasing.

Truly, listening and enjoying jazz is the best way to learn it! Once you start to really feel a tune and love it, try to learn it by ear, it'll build your jazz ear strength, and your vocabulary, all the while look up the chords and changes for the songs you're listening for, keep doing it and having fun playing improvising on simple parts of it, like keeping it on one note, then thirds, then between the chords, then eventually let yourself go and I can assure you, that feeling is every bit worth it to be able to lose yourself in the music of jazz, with everyone you play with!!! I wish you the best of luck Keep Your Mellow Chill, you've got this!!!!!

I think if I had to choose only one lesson to show a young student who’s eager to learn what’s “musical playing?” What’s “musicality”? I would show them this improvisation. It has it all.
The way he develops his ideas, introducing these short but very effective and memorable little melodies. Those textures and harmonies, the endless flow of chords and ideas, the unbelievable amount of surprise, the way he flawlessly exchange between sweet classic diatonic harmony and complex jazz voicings, between hymn, gospel and virtuosic runs. It’s music from the first two notes.
And off top of all that totally improvised of course!
Just unbelievable. I find myself returning again and again to this video. Thank you so much

The album IN MY ROOM is the clue. It's a celebration of the many years Jacob has spent in his music room, undisturbed, throughout his teens exploring harmony and rhythm and deepening his mastery of the keyboard and other instruments. He says "sometimes you break for a bit of food or something". That's how the hours slip away.... As a boy he had the 'luxury' of this freedom at home. Ideal conditions!

A luxury and a curse. But on the whole a youth well used. Most waste it on computer games. They play more than 10,000 hours of GTA and Assassins Creed and the like, before the age of 21. Spent by a piano, Collier happens.

That was so beautiful. I had chills the whole time, so smooth, so perfect. The fact that he can improvise something so soulful and from the heart is truly incredible. He’s better than most full time pianists who play ONLY the piano. Talk about multi talented. We are truly blessed with his presence on this earth.

Anybody else hear those Art Tatum, Lennie Tristano influenced lines in there. And the chording at the end? Bill Evans, maybe? or some of those dense voicings that Herbie uses? Like damn, this kid has studied the masters and mastered the art and he's doing The Thing at 22. It's lit.

This video brought me to buy Keyscape for myself several years ago and to this day it remains as one of my best purchases as a composer and pianist. No other sound library comes close to the richness and fidelity in sound that Keyscape has to offer, and the wide selection of different keyboards available is paramount to the program's uniqueness. To say that Keyscape is one of the best virtual instruments on the market is an understatement, and these videos that bring in a wealth of talented players showcasing the capabilities of the program was an incredibly smart decision by Spectrasonics. Thank you for this excellent product!
