July 22, 2019 | Collin Marshall -- As the the NPR staff gathered to watch his performance, Jacob Collier sprinted full bore down the hallway. It seems the North London 24-year-old can hardly contain his creative energy. It comes out in his wardrobe and most definitely in his music, but it's not misdirected or out of control. These are intricate and precise compositions, like a ship in a bottle made of thousands of planks of wood, yet light enough to sail in a breeze. It's on a scale you wouldn't imagine. Here's an example: This year he covered Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer's "Moon River" by recording himself 5,000 times and working in 144 other vocal submissions, and then he printed and sold signed copies of his Logic Pro audio session for fans while on tour. Though this is is a regular day for Jacob, his output continues to astonish everyone around him, both in its quality and sheer quantity. This year alone, he's putting out a project called Djesse with four distinct and complete volumes. Many of the songs are being written along the way, including one crafted specifically for the Tiny Desk called "It Don't Matter."
The whole Tiny Desk Concert has a lot to unpack. Check my math, but by my count Jacob plays seven instruments, if you include his singing. And you should - Jacob's stamp has always been to use voice in his compositions like a Swiss army knife, and virtually every combination of band members harmonizes at some point in the show. It's reflective of his philosophy on music as a connecting tool, to use the instrument we all possess, which drew me to his art in the first place. And as if to make good on those beliefs and bring all of us into one moment, he invited the crowd to sing the final lyrics of the concert together. It was the end of the show, but not even close to the limit of Jacob's imaginative bounds. He obsessed over leaving us a gift: a fake ID fashioned out of a passport photo and an Oyster Card - London's public transit fare card - which now sits on the hallowed shelves of the Tiny Desk. Extra credit if you can spot it in future episodes.

My Mom loved to be introduced to new music. A week before she passed (about a month ago), I was visiting her and my father and I played this for her. She loved it. "Feel" brought tears to her eyes. You were the last musician I introduced her to, and now every time I listen to you she is with me. Thank you for that. Your music will move music forward.
thanks for sharing that Pauli... much love
That's beautiful, and what a final musician to show her! Probably the best alive right now in terms of talent and theory.
That's beautiful. Your mother still lives in your heart. Don't forget that.

Yes!! Revisiting after djesse 4 and its insane to see how long hes been planning this album series

Beautifull ❤
Imagine an artist, who's able to play piano like a genius, nearly every instrument on this world on a high level, has a perfect pitch, understands music on a level it has never been before AND being a insane entertainer, making music with the crowd like we have never seen before AND being an insanely kind human being.
There you go, this is Jacob Collier.
Man, I love this dude.
I do see and hear all of those mention things. And still the music sounds really bland to me.
Same, he's so good it's almost annoying haha
His name is masego
O yeh I love lil xan
It's so perfect it feels soulless. I really don't like Jacob Collier, even if I admit he's a musical genius. For example, I've never seen him playing/singing acoustic blues, I'm pretty sure it would feel kind of robotic and non human.
The sound engineer did an absolutely stunning job with capturing every instrument tonal depth and clarity. The piano sounds like a studio sound room recording job!

@@Ikbeneengeit Exactly what I wanted to say, precies wat ik wilde zeggen
How did you like his music? Did you see the stuff he crafted as an adolescent? Look at "don't you worry bout a thing" by him. A masterclass, he shows an incredibly broad understanding of even music (brazilian, african) he had no business knowing about at that age or even anyone should be able to master like he had at that age, playing not only each part, but each part masterfully, exquisitely. The most stunning pan-instrumentalist and gift to humanity I have ever seen in the musical world. But I really wonder how you feel about it. I was shocked to read that you only just came across him, but, understandable as that is, I just commented on that "don't you worry bout a thing" video that I can't believe it's only been seen 6 million times over the span of 10 years. I figured I must have watched it on 1000 different devices A crazy under-appreciation of his talent, if you ask me. Everyone should atleast hear and see him operate once in their life. Glad you came across him!
I did not expect his voice to be that deep or that range.

@Kevin maybe he hasn't the most special timbre, but he has a crazy good range and technique. he grew up singing in operas so he definitely has a good voice.
@Kevin he doesn't have the most powerful voice by any means, but i don't necessarily love his music for his voice. (Even though i dont mind it). It's his savant level composition that makes me love his music.
@Kevin that mental image is just TOO good hahaha!

Time stamp?
Danny McCaffrey It’s been a minute since I last saw this, but I think I was talking about 14:47, someone correct me if I’m wrong as I’m now watching on a much smaller screen
The guy just went from Joni Mitchell to D'angelo to Bobby Mcferrin as if it was nothing and absolutely excelled at it.
Was looking through comments to see if anyone said anything about the strong D'Angelo vibes on the second song. Couldn't agree more with ya.
i guess there in lies my only issue with jacob...he has no readily identifiable style,. His style is pretty much i can take everyone else's style and do it well. now ofcourse developing your own style takes time but the day he does, it will be so powerful.
@@pandapaul the drum pattern has a lot to do with imo. Forsme it's still jazzier, but ya, the voicings are reminiscent,
What freaks me out is I've written out my influences and those three always make the list. And the fact that Jacob made those choices and you noticed too makes the world just feel a little bit smaller. And connected. If art is morale then I can't think of anything more quietly inspiring than when someone you love, loves the same things you do.
All true. Also Fleet Foxes (1st song particularly), Dirty Projectors (instrumentation/arrangement choices) and very strong Stevie Wonder.
I want to talk about the drummer for a moment. Especially during 'feel'.
He adds these subdivisions and stabs with the ride and hihat that fly completely under the radar. You don't hear them, you just... -feel- the change in the feel of the section of the song. That's what a great drummer should do to a song. Change it completely without it being obvious it was him. Just, such a humble and transformative approach to an otherwise loud and pride-prone instrument. (No shade, I'm a drummer, just stating as I see)
He's definitely good at 'shuffling' the notes- real fidgety. Also I LOVE drummers who can play that softly.. rare (and brilliant) trait
He’s rocking the xylo on top of it all
Now remember Jacob wrote and played the instruments of that song on his record.
There's nothing better than a subtle drummer. There's nothing worse than an unsubtle one. (Except maybe a lead guitarist with too many pedals).
alright drummer then would you please splain that wonk feel at the end?
I've never seen a group of people playing musics this complex in such joy. Jacob sure is the Mozart of our Generation
This is fantastic. In my humble opinion, Jacob should play more shows in this "acoustic" format. Without live-looping and pre-recorded bits, the compositions really get a chance to breathe and the playful musicality factor is increased to 1000%.
Amen to that
He has been this past year
you have to see his live shows with the same band (except Becca Stevens) he did in the last year.. for me it was incredible.. sure there are still some smal parts with looping but still it was fuckin awesome
Totally agree.. I was waiting for the Collier Band!
I totally agree .. at the age of 60.... some things, he performs live are too loud for me
I bet Jacob Collier knows what the key of H sounds like.
Most German musicians do, B is H in Germany 😜
@@wilcokostermusic5943 The reason why I asked myself: "What does he mean?", shortly before I realized :-)
@@wilcokostermusic5943 like all the other keys? They all sound the same in equal temperament if you're not comparing to a different key and don't have perfect pitch
Probably sounds like G half sharp
@Lev WHITELAW that's crazy because I'm pretty sure that's not what he was talking about because he didn't say 'what notes are in the key' he asked what the key sounds like.
Unless I missed something, at the beginning of the second song, the band starts singing a three part harmony without a starting pitch note. Any musicians out there will know how insanely talented and well rehearsed you have to be to do that. Basically means each member had to inherently know the key of the song in their head and adjust their harmony accordingly without hearing any music to base it off of. Mad props cause I know I woulda came in with some wild hyena note.
damn i didn't even notice that but yeah that's tight
If you listen really closely at about 5:15 you can hear Jacob singing each note in the harmony
I know Jacob has perfect pitch, dont know about the other members

Ok but can we talk about R A N G E ? Baritone to falsetto so *smoothly* gosh
The voice is an instrument too.
Falsetto is not a voice classification. Every bass singer has a falsetto. Jacob is also more of a low baritone, not a real bass.
Seems like a pretty standard baritone, the microphone helps us hear his lower range which isn't as powerful. From the color of his voice you can tell he's a regular bari

Jacob Collier's music is accessible and wonderful to listen to, but the more you know about music, the more every single part of it absolutely explodes your brain. How can anyone have so much command of the structure and texture of music, such unfathomable power to play with rhythm and harmony, seemingly completely effortlessly, and yet still manage to craft a melody so approachable and singable that he can get a whole group to sing along on their first hearing? What Jacob Collier does with music reflects the reasons I listen to Bach and Brahms: drawing you in with a beautiful and memorable melody, laid overtop a complex and spidering web of harmony, counterpoint, and structural interrelation, which deeply rewards every single repeated listening. I never imagined I would see in my lifetime a single man blessed with so much talent, but I'm glad I'm alive now to hear what he does.
Sir, I concur with your observations and could not have said it better. I haven't stopped listening to him since my first time, the songs and playing get better and juicier with repeated listening, though ever fresh and surprising. They unpack, rewire your brain, and become your favorite drug...
I think it's also us that are, in a way, blessed. We are because we can listen and appreciate what he has to do in his whole life.

I wonder if Jacob is saved by Jesus Christ. If not, all his music is worthless and will be forgotten.
I really like how Jacob gave the backsingers so much room. I feel like often times they are just assistants and no actual band member like in this one.
True, but backsingers are Maro and Becca Stevens, and they are quite confirmed artists on their own 😊
If you're familiar with his work, they're actually fully featured artists that he gave title credit on a handful of tracks -- definitely more than just "backup" singers to him
They're not even his band members, but rather good friends who support each other, and you can feel their relationship is bigger than just proffessional by the way they interact with each other... Just beautiful to watch

It's amazing how Jacob Collier can have multiple grammies but yet bet so criminally underrated.
Casual Introvert ❶ I definitely wouldn’t call him underrated, his entire fan base adores him. I’d call him criminally undiscovered or unknown by most, but not underrated, as the people who do know him rate him very very highly ;)

Music is best felt, not heard.
The bass always needs to be heard
Every member of that band was smiling and just purely enjoying being in the moment. That is special.
Helps when the guy just wrote the song a few days ago, and it's still fresh. Goodness.
You can tell how much the drummer loves his craft. So talented.
playing the stapler for jacob collier would be an honour
Aha I'd probably end up stuffing it up tbh
funniest comment
Please get some self respect
Is no one going gonna talk about how that drummer was feeling the music!! He was jammin and lookin like he could stay in these moments forever
Lily Rapoza he’s were he’s supposed to be
he's right in the pocket.
IKR. His face was like "Damn, I'm lovin this"
At 10:05, he attempts the D'angelo drunk beat. Jacob smiles at him because it's so hard to keep up with the bass being straight and all. Love this concert to bits.
10:05 that kick drum tempo is just something else man
NPR Tiny Desk need to be given an award. Consistently they bring great artists on here. 😍😍😍😍
right?!?!
I think the artists reward for being fantastic is the chance to come on here and share that with all of us. Sooo beautiful
The best thing about Jacob Collier is that he show clearly shows the joy he feels while he performs his music. It's so obvious he is someone who chose to live his life for music and loves every second.
And it's so effortless, he is so at ease with musical complexities which would baffle most people that he can just lie back and play with all the patterns and intricacies and give us little bits of beauty, followed by fragments of tongue-in-cheek indecision, all blending together to create a really complex and fulfilling piece of time.

I feel privilaged to be alive while this guy is making music.
same!!
@@peterd-k853 seem him live twice guys, solo and with this band. Really crazy good guys
Same!!!
I feel like a proud uncle. Crazy!
My exact feeling as well.
It is like Ghibli movie, full of fantasy and dreamy feelings, like it🧡
damn bro right on the spot
Most definitely. This band's flow is so damn dreamy. The lyrics and music just float from one concept to another.
That's a perfect description.
Yea!
In my 8 years on UA-cam, I don't think I have never commented on a youtube video before, but if any video deserves it, this is probably it.
I knew that Jacob Collier was an amazing musician, but: WOW. Just at a loss for words at the talent on display here.
Astounded? Blown away? Flabbergasted? Humbled? Grateful? None of them do proper justice to the emotion I felt watching this.
... Alright, fine. Second comment. Just realized it might be possible to look it up. ;)
Ha! If you like this also check out Bobby Mcferrin - By the Sea and Bobby Mcferrin - Improvisation with Richard Bona. Just beautiful. Brings me to tears.
Same. Am loss for words...
And not only Jacob, but the rest of the band as well
I think what makes it special is the constraint. On his own Jacob goes wild with harmony, melody, layers upon layers as tall as skyscrapers as he can't pour out his voice quickly enough.
Here there are 6 of them. Each, albeit, playing multiple parts and instruments, but still only 6. The essence of each piece has to be distilled to something performable, and performed at a tiny desk, no less. I like this kind of Jacob the best, and I think as he's matured as a musician we're seeing more and more restraint as he's practiced playing in constraint with different collaborators. I feel like it's freeing him more, and we're just getting better and better expressions of his overflowing musical fount with each passing year.
Agreed. The arrangements and performances are more felt and have more soulfulness to them.
That performance of "Feel" is just unbelievable.
Totally!!
Exquisite
In deed man in deed
can we respect the drummer really doing his best controlling and consistantly maintaining the tempo
East Bros are you saying he is fundamentally challenged in his drumming?
@@ryanz06 i think what they're trying to say is that the rhythm in jacob's songs can get a little crazy sometimes.
@@ryanz06 The way Jacob has his music transcribed makes me feel fundamentally challenged.
I just think that jacob's songs has some crazy rhythm in it so i was really wondering what made jacob chose that guy instead of someone else. The only possible reason is because he is a living metronome
and it is so interesting that he played a simple beat but I can see a high level of focus on his face
as a drummer controlling and consistently maintaining tempo is like the minimum
How talented do you have to be to tour with Jacob Collier???😮
That band is ridiculous!!!
It’s not often artists this talented get mic’d and recorded by engineers and techs equal to the task. And we have to love Jacob and his coat of many colors.
If Jacob scored a Disney film it would be the best thing to happen to Disney’s soundtracks since the people who scored brother bear
Now I wanna watch brother bear💀
Phil Collins did Brother Bear.
and Tarzan. Phil Collins is awesome.
I think Lin Manuel Miranda did pretty well with Moana, but Jacob would be great too
Hans Zimmer did Lion King

This man is absolutely top tier. If music could manifest itself as a human it would be him.
Can we also just talk about how PERFECT the mix is?
My friend and I noticed this right off the bat too 😂
Honestly Tiny Desk is incredible. They can get a better mix with a live recording than I get get with months of finessing
@gbbzhgvbgfjzffvvzgdf Almost Bach but he can still do it, he is young. All the others were put to shame already tho
Imagine the burden of being Jacob Collier, doing his best to translate all the things that played in his brain with only two hand and legs at a time
Angela Wu I read this comment as he pulled out the blow piano thing and it landed just perfect. Appreciated.

So true. He's incomprehensible to me. The level of EVERYTHING brimming in him.

My God... I've been listening to music for well over 40 years... I've heard it all, truly.
But this young man, who sounds like the BEST of singers from the 1940s and 50s, is pure magic.
So sincere... so genuine... its totally retro, and yet somehow, so new.
Its how you know the Buddhists were onto something - he's channeling something older than time!
@Mark Brookman if you honestly think that Jacob is even close to the best singers of the 40s and 50s you have not listened to nearly as much music as you think you have. Jacob does not TOUCH the best of 40s and 50s singers list. He does not come close to any best singer list of any time period. I like his music, very smooth and nice sounding. But let’s get off the LSD and come back to earth. He is not a great singer.
I'm with you Mark, been listening to music for most of my close to 80yrs and Jacob is a genius. How do you define a "great singer"? Opera singers can "sing" but Jacob moves me in more ways, just with his sense of timing and feel for the emotion of the song.
@@petertoal371 ok rank Jacob on the list of top 1000 singers, where does he fall? what number is he?
@@petertoal371 ... exactly. I'm a muso of 30 plus years... and I know a genuine MUSICIAN when I hear/feel one.
I just watched his Glastonbury show as a Jacob Collier newbie and was blown apart by his talent. This video was my next stop. Dear god, this guy is just off the chart talented and deserves to be recognised on a truly global scale. Plus, he’s the best thing outta Britain right now!! 👏

@@lotusdragon5 Not good enough
For the sake of argument, would you be willing to pay some money - specifically - for this artist?
I think the idea is that you watch this then pay money to the artist for the actual recording of the albumd rather then pay tiny desk
Please and thank you🙏
One of the most impressive parts of this performance is when they all come in together at the beginning of Feel at 5:29 singing that F# sus 2 and its perfectly pitched. No reference tone from the piano, just that quick check around the room at 5:15, so subtle you'd miss it if you weren't paying attention. That's what perfect pitch looks like.
Became absolutely dumbfounded by this, so I had to search for this comment. That is absolutely insane.
But the bass played some reference notes and she followed with her voice...is that what you’re referring to?
Whisker Whippers ™️ True. At 5:14 you can hear the bass barely play the chord , while a singer hums the arpeggio. But still incredible to hit that chord and make it almost ring. So impressive!
It's truly amazing how the human ear can do that! I was in a choir for more than 10 years, and sometimes when singing something we would use notes from the piece that came before as references if we had to start with difficult chords. It worked (almost) every time xD
I listened to 5:15 to see if I can hit the right notes at 5:29 and it worked!
Imagine being gifted enough as a musician that Jacob Collier decides instead of doing it all himself he lets you play with him
Exactly what I was thinking as I watched the smile on the drummer's face during the 2bd number... He just looks so happy to be there ... And yet he is also so gifted. All these musicians are playing on a much much higher plane than the rest of us mere mortals.
they were terrible
Get over it(!) Music is better when disseminated with others alike. No one is an island and he certainly isn’t a God
ewereko55 lol shut up
CINESTHESIA I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings
"I don't know why... but it makes me cry" *sings a chord that makes you cry* ok Jacob you know exactly why
Dear NPR Music: Have you ever thought about releasing the Tiny Desk Concerts as High-Quality Audio downloads? I would be supperhappy to buy them and not only have to stream them via youtube.
It's pretty easy to download any UA-cam audio as an mp3
@@tylerluck378 Hey tyler, just fyi you can actually do it, but you won't really get high-quality audio, because youtube reduces audio quality to 192kbps (max) in every upload when encoded. So when you download it you can't get more than that, which is not a high-quality standard.

All the drummers on this show are insane
It hurts how perfect he is
it's almost disrespectful what he does behind this drum kit, goddamn
Jacob is outta this world, Maro is phenomenal, all are stunning
I love how he is enjoying his music and sharing with others, and has no ego, and does not judge himself or others, he is just playing and feeing free. This is unique in the performance world

10:22 the drummer has playing High Hats out of time or at odd “tuplets” to lend to this off-kilter spacey feel. Then he plays 1 bar of even hi hat hits & Jacob quickly looks at him. Then he shakes his head and goes back to out of time hi hats. I thought this was hilarious 😂
i am kintsugii 😂
Nah, it's the 5:4 polyrhythm on kick at 10:06
Man. I didn't notice. I appreciate your comment. Gives me more to appreciate about this amazing artist, group. They work hard!
I thought it was because he took a sharp breath out of time with the rest of the group! Haha
@@johnpeter3167 it's not 5:4 but it's close. It's like if he started the first bit of a 5:4 and took a breath. The space between the second note and the next in the lick is an 8th note more than it was 5:4. So its sort of like a 3:2 with a little spice
