This is of course totally awesome, but shame on you BBC for not crediting the other musicians! This is not a pop session where the star of the show gets all the credit and everyone else gets totally ignored as if they contributed nothing. James Maddren on drums and Robin Mullarkey on bass - phenomenal playing from all 3, great job guys! UPDATE: they edited the description after I posted this comment and now they all get credit. Hooray!
I came here for Jacob and stayed (and have returned countless times) for the rhythm section. Or rather, for the amazing interplay between these three great musicians. I love the 70's Hancock-esque flavour of this jam. Hats off to everyone involved.
Postmodern Musical Sophist yeah but even Jacob has said in his masterclass at Berklee that he doesn't really "get" music theory, which is a bit contradicting to his interview with june lee lol
@postmodern Musical Sophist i think he had a pretty creative upbringing. in my experience I've been ok with music without theory so far, but as soon as you want to communicate what you play to someone its so hard without knowing theory. Rather it'd be super fast to tell someone a chord with understanding theory while its harder to tell someone "ok the fifth field on the A string, third on G and so on". In my opinion theory might put frames for you to play on, and its always easy to play in a frame, but its on you to go out of those frames and combine them into your own frame for the picture you paint with your music.
This is the entire point of Jazz and exploration, that dates to the original explorations of great soloists playing "standards", by exploring pop tunes of the day, through reharmonization and improvisation and exploring the possibilities a given piece offered. Jacob seems to be taking it to a new and inspiring level, combining technology, his vocal arrangement sensibilities and a really nice new voice on piano. I am excited to see what he does next and that is refreshing to me as most modern music has gotten so predictable and boring and with this young man you don't what is next and that is awesome!
You said it, it's the element of surprise that Jacob realizes is so effective about music. I mean to even appreciate and notice that takes a certain amount of listening experience of all sorts of music over time. What I like is that no matter where the harmony, (and rhythm) goes, the music is always accessible in one form or another, like, there are pianists that can play extremely dissonant atonal music, and yes, the harmony's complex but is it accessible? Not really. I just gotta give it up for Jacob's musical balls for not caring what the "elitists" think and just doing what he wants with his arrangements.
@@ohwhen7775 A great example of his musical philosophy can be found on the clip from his concert at USA where he is interviewed between pieces. It is well-worth giving listen to.
Rob Mullarkey is the heart and soul behind the group Brothery who released one of my favourite albums 'One Sweet Life' which is a must listen for any jazz musician.
Shame on BBC for not crediting the wonderfull Bass Player and Drummer. (And also not showing them more during the song) Thanks to James Maddren on drums and Robin Mullarkey on bass
I’m just hearing this for the first time. I am literally in a state of shock. The rhythm section is out of their minds! 😳 Rob Mullarkey: Bass James Maddren: Drums
Anthony Cruz I feel like I’ve snuck into a circus run by some wildly advanced species- discovering this kid on Christmas Eve has done more for chasing my blues away than I thought possible...
This cat rewrites the book on re-harmonization!!!!! Has incredible musical insight, an outstanding jazz/rock/funk/fusion feel and obviously surrounds himself with only the best talent when it comes to bass players and drummers. Makes me smile to know that someone is taking such a fresh approach to music performance. OUTSTANDING!
The more I listen to this the more I like it The first time I heard it I really didn’t like it but then I found myself humming it all the time Then I had to come back and listen to it again so here I am, having listened to this at least a hundred times
The joy and musicianship is both astounding and unique. Anyone that refuses to acknowledge this is either deaf or has no appreciation for raw genuine talent. For gods sake, embrace him, Jacob is everything we all loved about jazz in the first place.
I work with kids, and when I watch Collier I see the same joy and thrill of creating that I witness when I watch a bright, focused child step into a sandbox, or play with water, ride on a swing...It's totally effortless and no awareness of onlookers. There is no judgment of self, just discovery. This is so very rare to see in an adult and I can't get enough of it!
Jacob, you continue to blow our collective minds... I especially like bit around 4:30 mins when its goes all E.S.T, for a bit, theres a hat tip there surely? I make my living as a musician, and unlike others who say hearing you makes them want to just give up, hearing you just makes me want to get better!

I listen to this every couple months since it was posted and I am only just now hearing jacob play all the notes and rhythms of "the lick" except the last near the middle solo. Good luck finding it

While this is true, Collier goes way beyond jazz (a genre I love) to places music has never gone before. He is destroying the demarcation lines between genres.
2020... I'm from the Beatles generation and remember well this song when it came out. Jacob's much more complex harmonies and arrangement only enhance the original, giving the song a lot more emotional depth- it is a very poignant and evocative composition. Jacob's arrangements are often more like a movie soundtrack than a pop song. Love it, only a real genius could pull this off, and yes, great backing musicians!
Jacob is an expert in making a riff that tells a story and then make another story over it with repetitions of the riff in other forms. The riff of the three solos he play is the same one, its awesome how he started the second solo. He really makes me sswwuuuaaghhhhyeh
Dammit Jammes Maddren! you've done it again you killing cat! :) Also a fantastic performance from Robin Mullarkey. And Jacob Collier....well it goes without saying :) he's brilliant
astonishingly good! Wonderful and fresh take, Great playing by everyone but Jacob is a major force to be reckoned with and deserves major label interest.
I guess Jacob Collier is living proof that some people really do have super powers. I could be wrong, but I believe he accidentally fell into a vat of radioactive chemicals while listening to Beethoven as a child. Explains everything.
Actually Jacob is an archangel on sabbatical from the mansions of the celestial realm. Being an angelic spirit he is, of course, a terrifically nice person. That's why everyone loves him to bits.

sanjinans exactly. Theory should be used mostly to explain the music not to make it (but maybe to some extent)
@@sanjinans As they say, you gotta know the rules to break the rules.
That's nonsense. Music theory gives you more tools to use. If you can't use them creatively, you're not as creative as you thought to begin with
