    I think the key concept is being missed here though. Penetration is great and all, but the real test is how long it takes to destroy a critical module on the other side. Try guarding a refinery on the other side of those plates. If you have the refinery up against the wall without a space, you'll blow it up without even getting close to penetrating the actual hull since the armor deformations squash it. That is why leaving a space in armor makes such a huge difference.
    Penetration is a bad metric for armor effectiveness.

    Well you basically created composite armor
    Modern composite tank armors use different metals, plastics, ceramics and such
    and the tire acts as shock absorbing plastic like filling
    the heavy armor is hardened steel and inside the ship you couldput spaced light armor to absorb the remaining frags and explosions

      I think it can be very effective on capital ships with a design like leopard 2a5's turret: some armor covering the outside of the ship to hide the sloped armor inside. That way, the attacker won't know how to angle itself to counter the slope.

    I use a 3 layered armor similar to the composite but arranged differently.
    The layer closest to the ship is solid heavy armor. The most outer layer is crossed heavy armor, so it is arranged to look like a tic tac toe game. In the middle layer i use light armor to fill in the gaps created by the crossed heavy armor.
    The outer most layer is very effective at absorbing rocket shots the light armor in the middle act as a sponge that absorbs the blast. The layer closest to the ship is for stopping the Gatling gun. Because the crossed heavy armor and middle light armor layer has gaps in it the explosion from the rocket deforms the armor much much slower, and thus the armor lasts much longer.

    Trying to slope armor is useless most of the time, as you are rarely paralell
    to your enemies and your position will vary either way making slopes straight
    and vice versa.
    For survival the most practical solution i found to be build a ship out of light armor, then slap a heavy shell on it.

    This is the only things that bothers me in this game. We now have limpets, spider silk, carbon nano-tubes and what not, in a game that is supposedly set in the near future we use steel to make armor! Steel...!? Better armor and plasma shields please.

      May I add that Boeing recently got a patent for shielding technology, which basically detects incoming projectiles and generates targeted, directional shockwaves to repulse the shockwaves from the enemy explosives. It's useless against shrapnel (as of now), but I'd imagine by the time of SE, we'd have the technology to shield against kinetic weapons (bullets, shrapnel) too. We also already have the tech to create small plasma windows. Scaling it up is difficult as of today, but those plasma windows are damn near impenetrable from what I know. And, lastly, there's those two students from a college (I forget the name but think it's George Mason University) that use low pitch sound waves, aka heavy bass, to put out flames. They're working towards getting a patent and will probably begin building and selling usable units to firefighters once that's done. My point here is that given currently existing and emerging technologies, in my mind it's completely justifiable to add more defensive and offensive weapons to the vanilla game, especially ways to counter missiles. Hell, some limited form of shielding ain't a bad idea. Maybe instead of Star Wars style shields special blocks would be needed to generate the shields between them using plasma and would have a limited distance and heavy energy consumption. Or a new block to generate shockwaves to deflect missiles and what not. Nevertheless, I'm excited for this game's future and hope they add more advanced (but realistic) combat capabilities to the vanilla game! And they need to put those damn demonstration mods they make into the vanilla game!!!

    • @Todiros
      @Todiros 9 років тому +1

      Peter Clarke Theoretically yes, but in practice it can't bond with anything well as of now and it'll always be one atom thick or its properties will be changed. The same is true for the carbon nano-tubes. Scientists are continuously trying to find the perfect element to bond it with, so there is decent possibility that they'll figure something out in near future. Tungsten carbide is also very strong but shatters so it must combined into alloy as well. Just for the sake of gameplay, the could just add an armor made of e.g. titanium-carbon alloy and call it a day.
      P.S. What about the rest 20%?

    • @Todiros
      @Todiros 9 років тому +2

      ***** Its possible actually to create a magnetic field with big enough electromagnet that can hold plasma around the ship and protect it from almost anything. The drawback is that the field will slowly weakens over time and you'll need two capacitors to switch between in order to keep the field strong. (which in game can be done with batteries and a timer). Also the shield will work both ways so you would not be able to shoot as well, which is fine by me. Can be useful as purely defensive mechanism when you are fleeing and trying to save yourself from battle. Although I read in comments somewhere that if you shoot a plasma beam with opposite charge of the one of the shield it will create a temporary hole you can shoot through.

    Isn't talking about angled Armor for fighter a bit pointless?
    In the end, we are in a threedimensional environment. enemies can attack from all angles! therefore it make no sense to deliberately angle your armor...
    Maybe in a fight between capital ships, where you can adjust your position to the enemy but as solution for fighter?!? I don't think so...

    • @XpVersusVista
      @XpVersusVista 9 років тому +38

      The question with the angled armor was if it makes a difference from where you shoot at the enemy ship. Now we know, it is more clever to line up with the enemy ship so we can shoot straight at the armor, instead of just shooting at it while it's angled due to our relative position to the enemy.

    • @MultiNonymous
      @MultiNonymous 9 років тому +6

      Seth90TOF The nearest thing to angling armor from all sides is to get the armor as sphere-like as possible so that anything that didn't hit dead center hits at an angle. This much might be useful for fighter designs.

    • @cuttlefish6839
      @cuttlefish6839 9 років тому +2

      what palo said as well as angled armour is not useless what are you generally shooting at when attacking a fighter the sides and rears, angling say the back of the spine also adds effective armour to it so they don't shoot straight into your cockpit. etc with the side armour. Sure its three dimensional but it doesn't mean people will let you hit them in the flat areas. also it can lower the hit boxes of said fighter adding less mass and decreasing its size

      Yeah, these crazy armor types for fighters aren't practical in the slightest. However, on a big ship I've been working on, I simply made liberal use of the vanilla angled blocks, and the thing was able to eat a shot from a gravity cannon with no damage except for some weird internal warping. We haven't tested it with more conventional weapons, but the likelihood of my group using those is slim anyways.

    So we've seen how the armor slope and composition helps protect ships but what about construction methods? say for instance you started building the ship with a sort of hardened rib cage made out of heavey armor and likewise a rigid spine. and I'm talking about that in a literal sense and think of armor as the skin/muscle of a ship. And seeing how badly some of your missiles have cut through some ship I wonder if this idea would work to also make a ship considerably more survivable if it had a hardened skeleton to keep it from being cut/severed from other parts of the ship.

  • @mattiasaronsson3737

    I did some tests on the armor blocks after the last update because it was mentianed that the way damage is applied to block had been change, something about the number of components welded into the block. What I found out was that the gatling gun and the gatling turret, which are using the same ammo, damage for about half a steel plate per bullet regaredless of the block being a small ship, large ship, light armor or heavy armor block. The rocket launchers and missile turret had similar result where each hit head on a singel block destroyed +- the same number of steel plates. What should be noted is that gatling bullets of course only damage the block it hits. Also rockets may have a blast radius but it's much smaller than it looks only damageing a few block around the point of impact on small ships and not often more than two on large ships, blocks dose deform around the point of impact but dosen't actually take any damage. This proves that, at leaset with vanilla weapons, block integrity is based on the number of components in the block and also just because a block is warped dosen't mean it's damaged, I have not tested if different components have different integrity however.
    Lastly I just want to correct Aaron on the number of steel plates in the armor blocks. Small light is 1, small heavy is 5, large light 25 and large heavy is 150, last time i cheaked but I could be wrong about the large heavy.

    Place a projector on your ship, then put the entire ship's blueprint on the projector while matching it up with the ship and set it to "Show Only Buildable" ... you now have a Repair Projector. Combine it with a welder wall for instant repairs or welders spaced out inside the armor for self repairing armor that will even replace missing blocks mid combat.

    what about sprinkling heavy armor blocks on a single sheet of light armor? my guess is that the heavier armor would pen in the deformations of the lighter blocks and increase thier effectiveness without the high costs of layering armors or building solely from heavy blocks. though I imagine figuring out the best intervals and patterns would take some experimenting.

    A Shot Trap is a concept in tank design. Downward sloping armour on usually the turret may deflect a round down into a weak point like a weld, a pocket, or the less armoured top of the tank body, causing more damage than it would have otherwise.

    Did not think of the tire concept but it makes perfect sense now that you've show it. The tire like most blocks does not have a damage set in game like armor blocks do (note blast door blocks also do not) and this means that the only way the armor blocks can deform is outward. So until the devs add those damage sets putting any none armor block in the center will have that huge effect making anti missile designs very easy to make, and gatling based ships will become more practical. Great work on it!

  • @faressdiri9857

    there needs to be penetration values in this game, so 2 light blocks equal 1 heavy block, so shooting 1 layer of heavy armour with a machine can will completely stop the bullet, so the bullet does no damage, but shooting 1 layer of light armour means that you can penetrate effectively with a machine gun, but shooting 2 layers of light armour with a machine gun does absolutely nothing, so as to nerf the machine guns, since in real life machine guns cannot penetrate heavy armour, unless they are a big enough caliber, or they ar specifically made to penetrate armour...

    I get the impression that people are still misunderstanding the simplest part of how damage works in this game. The toughness of all blocks against weapons fire is determined by their components. A heavy armour cube will survive exactly five times the fire-power because it contains five times the steel plate. And a block mostly comprised of steel components is far tougher than one mostly comprised of computer chips and radio equipment. Components listed higher/later in the weld order take damage first, and thus can potentially act as armour for that block (eg, bullet proof glass in cockpits).
    The other form of damage that blocks take, is deformation, which does nothing until it hits a certain threshold, and then removes the block. During the video I was thinking that Arron was reading a bit too much into the shape and deformation of the block, since in my experience it has almost no bearing on actually resisting weapons fire. That last experiment with the tire did seem to lean against those thoughts though, so is worth testing further.

    So I did a little test with your armor... Ok a big test I shot at a fully built armored and armed to the tip Destroyer. I shot at it with guns, launchers, even15 modded weapons like the rail guns and it still takes 10+rounds to penetrate. (Railgun 3 rounds to pass though inner hull, heavy inner, tire, then outer. All other guns would just dent, warp, or crack the armor. After I did gun tests I moved to torpedoes and remote torpedoes not fired by gravity launchers. Still just dents and cracks, large impact area but still no pen. Your slanted tire armor concept is best for all PPP ships.

    i think the most useful armour desigs are those that work well against projectiles ie oki turrets and the standard gatling guns because imo the best way to deal with rockets is to instal ciws (close in weapon systems) that just takes out the rockets (or meteor storms) before they can even impact the armour, just my opinion
    i wonder how these here armour designs (and equivalents made of heavy armour) would actually stand up to some of the modded turrets

    heres one you haven't tried from this video i see ;) i use a variant of armor that is a sort of overlapping checker board of light and heavy armor offset in multiple layers so that under every heavy armor block is a light armor block and under every light armor block is a heavy armor block i normally use 4 thick layering with this configuration and i usually use angled outer armor as well to prevent griefers from just randomly building a warhead on the hull

    the key is (in large ship, on small ship its not working unfortunetly :S) > Big armor block+welder+projectors (with keep projecting settings) > and you have an infinite armor. I hope I could help with that.

      1 welder can repair a 3x3x1 teritory, but usually I use more than one (to speed the welding speed). "cold injure your crew" Dont run into the BIG FLASHING RED LIGHT! usually helps.

      Yeah this is workable for large ships where a massive footprint to contain all the additional systems is achievable. Personally I prefer it keeping crucial systems online, so gyros, propulsion, life support and power and weapons. The best application of the self repair/welder system is for maintaining your offensive capability in a large ship, that is essential to stop the enemy from creating a massive offensive blind spot, this is almost essential . It can be made more energy efficient by using sensors to determine if/when a component is damage or destroyed to toggle the self repair system on and off as required too.

    Welder behind heavy armour blocks is enough for normal weapons. Project a welder, heavy armour block, gryo and heavy armour block. With as many build and repair as possible (mod). Even if you break the armour it will just reform. So long as important stuff behind the armour can be projected and fixed by welders and buildandrepair. You can still break any armour with remote controlled custom missles but the ship can regenerate. So you make your whole ship self printing. Ships can get big and heavy but with big missiles onboard, you can do a lot of damage. Warfare would then be about shooting done these missiles.
    Anyway it takes powerful mod guns and weapons to punch into regening ships to take them down. Big missiles leave blocks which need to be grinded which makes repair massively longer.
    The only down side is acceration is very low and thrusters must be inside the ship. You dont regenerate fuel and lost resourses. Regenerating damage makes the ship heavy. You need all the resources for repairs. The area with all the materials must be heavy armoured within the ship. The ship looks like a brick.
    Layered shields are better. You can make the other hull in sections and connect each hull armour module with connectors. Each with its own shield. The sections can regenerate if the sheilds go down. Thus when the ship restores shields to an armour module, the hull fully restores itself. With the connector system ships have to be built on the ground. The different modules are already connected via blocks before the connectors are connected and only disconnected at the end. This means that there is no gap between connector and block line up correctly. All gryos, thrusters and cockpits must be one section. Everything else can be other grinds connected via connectors. This means the connector part of the ship is vast because its smaller grinds but the merged part is reduced within game limits. I have yet to get it to work 100 %.

  • @Tryptic214
    @Tryptic214 9 років тому

    Of course, you also need to consider that if your armor profile is smaller, some of those shots that *would* have hit, will miss entirely. Zero damage is hard to argue with, and heavy armor increases the weight of your ship significantly making it harder to dodge.

  • @TeamColorSquad

    The only thing i rely on is evasion, dodging the attacks, (cant be done when the attacks coming at you is just bunches of gatling guns) I always put alot of booster on my ships, to rely on dodging, but if one bullet hits me, yep, a giant chunk of my ship is then a goner

  • @abrr2000

    I've found that light armour on top of heavy armour is rediculously tough.
    sure you blow holes in it. but it doesn't break. I've actually pummeled it with so many missiles that I've pushed the outer armour of a ship so far down that it's crushed to the floor of the deck below, and still the armour is intact and providing protection.
    In addition, it means you can't spot the heavily protected sections of the ship.

  • @bobmcbob49
    @bobmcbob49 5 років тому

    A cheaper way to implement some of the better designs would be to copy tank armor by saving the higher-quality protection for critical points.
    Either with obvious add-on armor to the outside, or slap in internal "spall liner" around critical systems. The latter being the cheaper option and probably more resistant to being completely bypassed by gravity weapons.

      No, that's the dumbest idea, because how are you going to shoot if your guns are inside the "cage" and if there on the cage, then they're going to constantly spin so they can't target anything, not to mention the thruster damage, it's just a dumb idea

  • @speed150mph
    @speed150mph 9 років тому

    I think spaced armour is great, if you use a light armour exterior layer and a heavy interior layer. now he is sitting there stationary shooting at the same spot over and over, which makes the spaced armour seem less effective. now consider that my ship is moving, and since all my ships typically have heavy AAA armaments your fighter has to keep moving to avoid being blasted by gattlings, missiles, laser turrets and the like.
    however I want to point out that a well designed inertia weapon can defeat most armour if it is traveling at terminal velocity.

    have you tested with 3 layers of armor except the middle layer is not constructed (only has 1 steel panel in it) I found surprisingly that by not constructing armor blocks they tend to resist collision even better so I should probably test it with weapons too
    The main point is that like your tires they do not deform but are much cheaper
