Sorry to those folks on the Hitbox stream last night that have already seen this.. but the results were so surprising and honestly pretty cool that I just had to share it :)
***** The last would be finding a context to give it good use, the puppeteer to print fighter drones or a floating mid-air repair bay. also merge the 2 into 1 bigger ship with a nose capable of going into space and leave the "wings behind".... I has potential.
what i think is this idea could be used (after reworking) to have the black ship be a cargo transport, and the white becomes a basic low resource method of getting it into space (or if your in space an easy way down) would be great for early game survival. start on planet take off into space find an asteroid, set up a mining base, return to planet. no hydrogen needed.
What you experienced with the white aircraft also happens in real life, for the same reasons. If the nose is pointed slightly upwards, the aircraft will climb until it begins to stall due to the thinner air at very high altitude and will then start to fall, but once it re-enters the thicker part of the atmosphere it will start climbing again, and the cycle can repeat indefinitely keeping the aircraft at a consistent average altitude. This is called "porpoising". Pretty cool that you managed to make it happen in Space Engineers, and even cooler that it turned out to be useful!
it's a great concept. Say you have a station in orbit and want to get there with minimal materials, this is the way to do it. Of course it has to be on a multiplayer server unless those ions are strong enough to carry both it and the carrier to space [highly doubt it]. i think it's a concept worth exploring. I think it's very practical especially on a cooperative sort of multiplayer.
thats what i was thinking, Sit in the black ship remotely controlling the white one, set up a timer block to sort out all the disconnection and at the same time set the white ship to fly back to a GPS position (or back and forth between a couple incase it wants to fall out of the sky!?). Alternatively you could use the parachute block mod and set the white bird to shut-off and deploy the chute, activating a beacon for future recovery. Alternatively you could set up a pay-load delivery system from the surface, having the black ship auto-pilot itself into orbit to wait for you to pick it up later. I've been thinking about a modular space station and fun ways to launch each piece so thanks for the enjoyable and informative vid as always Wastedspace!
I made a vanilla ship that can get to space without hydrogen thrusters or mods. I think it just has the right balance of atmo and Ion thrusters to make the transition from atmo to space. I haven't seen it done and wanted to try it. It is a large ship build.
to clarify, hes not using Digi's wings, well i mean he IS but they have absolutely no effect on movement/speed than any other block of similar dimension does
that is awesome mate... perfect for those who'd want a fast inexpensive way into space .. AND back again... with ease.. Nothing worse than constant crash landings.. and a trek and a half from your home base to go and get the supplies and/or salvage the crash site...
make four waypoints above the airfield and stick a remote control on the lifting craft. Then all you do is click autopilot on and it buggers off the go and circle the base instead of getting lost around the planet somewhere so when you end up back at base you can take over the remote and fly it down with a camera on the front or something.
I did think that would be the obvious next step :) Can it be done in reverse essentially, a carrier space craft that drops and then re-docks with aero craft for combat deployment and cargo delivery etc :) Gonna have to try it!
I dont play enough to say for sure (looking for a good survival server) but i feel this is more practical than you say, this allows you to make a pure space vehicle and launch it from the ground with a reusable method without having to add unnecessary parts to a pure space vehicle.
My friend once rescued me when we were both flying small grid miners into space for the first time, i had placed one of my forward thrusters in a weird spot and it damaged my large cargo container which was between the hydrogen supply and the thrusters and my lcd told me i was losing altitude, so he comes and docks onto my ship mid-flight which had about 700k ice in it at the time and stops the fall. Then we grind down a part of my front lcd array to get the components to fix the cargo container and we grind down that thruster, mid-flight docking IS possible.
Nice, yes I have noticed issues with connectors but it is a Keen issue. Happens in space too without any mods where a ship just loses all thrust control when it is near a connector.
+w4stedspace you are under valuing this thing, the issue of extraction can be solved by using the parasite craft to boost it to space, via hydrogen, also instead of the cockpit hoping, you can put a rc block in the Atmospheric craft and control from the parasite craft cockpit
I REALLY LIKE YOU VIDEOS. YOU ARE SUCH A HUMAN BEING. I ALSO ENJOY WALKING THROUGH THE PARK, AND TYPING IN ALL CAPS LIKE I'M ANGRY AT SOMETHING BUT REALLY I'M NOT.
It's practical in a sense if you have a bigger atmospheric ship that ferries a bunch of smaller space ships/drones to collect resources out in space so you don't have to lug a huge freighter out of the atmosphere every time. I can see it working if you have a crew.
I suspect the redocking issue is cockpits. Since you've got two master cockpits, the moment the connector snaps together, both cockpits are no longer masters. Maybe try flying the black one from a local remote so when you lock in, the white craft cockpit takes command, without the cockpit in the black one fighting it. Wheel lock like the safety lock on rotors? Perhaps when you hit you're suddenly going so fast that the system automatically locks it into place?
Use in SE would be in Multiplayer, you need platinum to build that large escape ship, have taken out a pirate base or collected a little from a random drone? build something like this to get someone up to the moon with a container, some canned air and a good drill. and have them bring some back while the first person continues working on the major launch vehicle/satellite/star port initial construction.
Hey W4sted is it not possible to have the atmo ship to be set up for autopilot?? This way you can sit in the ion ship, trigger the autopilot, then once you reach the correct height you detach and fly off. After this your atmo ship turns around and lands back at base ^_^
You can also easily turn it into a one man version by using a merge block instead of a connector, and remove the cockpit from the first aircraft, basically turning the first aircraft into a disposable wing attachment.
+w4stedspace you should try out a mod called MArmOS, not just because i want to learn how to use it without directly asking you to ask me, but also because it would be really interesting to see what you would come up with.
you could leave the connector strengths up, and just unlock and switch the connector off from the small ship, that way you wouldnt have to chase the small ship after leaving the larger one, and all from the tool bar :D
Make the carrier a drone and fly the parisite, that way you could fly them both back without space master. you could even make the carrier run a GPS holding pattern over the main base or even automate the whole thing with scripts and timers.
ok now a mother ship for these thing. planetary exploration or something. oooo they do sorta resemble death gliders. think stargate. oh extend the skis ad a couple roll-bar wheels, and dresser up like a war-bird. maybe another connector on top to nest them together or something.
i can't wait till you make an SSTO based plane that heavily relies on fuel and gliding, that'll be a very interesting kerbal approach to the challenge :p
If you used Whip's rotor VTOL script you could probably control the combined plane from the seat of the spaceplane so you don't need to switch cockpits when undocking.
I hadn't heard of Virgin Galactic's plane, rocket thing? :P But I have heard of XCor and their plans for a passenger shuttle, mainly because it's in an airport in the same region as me, space travel for the average Joe is coming, and it's coming quick. This thing looks kind of cool, I'm thinking of getting Space engineers soon, so I may try it for fun one-day-not-too-far-in-the-future.
That's pretty cool. Why are you fiddling with the connector settings every time they hook up? Why not just unlock and then turn off the connector on the white ship?
also is it possible to rig the carrier plane you made to automatically activate a remote block that makes it return to base after you've ejected from it? perhaps a sensor that detects when the black craft is seperated from the carrier, that could work as the activation for the remote block to start a route.. hopefully it won't need any scripting and no more than one timer block at most.. thats another thing that could be interesting, the goal is to make every piece of hardware re-usable after all :)
Very nice. But you don't even need engines when the magic floating ship bug kicks in. Just had this happen with a big ship. Space Engineers doesn't want to play today. :(
I'm surprised two large ions can still give it lift - they should work once you break atmo but still having power in atmo at 30% should make it drop. Oh well, it's still a fun little design ;)
I really like the idea, but having said that, wouldn't you be better off just using a ship with ion thrusters and atmospheric thrusters? In the video you demonstrated that atmospheric thrusters begin to fail where ion thrusters take over, so you would be perfectly fine using a hybrid.
I was thinking, because the planets have real spherical gravity that act on a ship even in space, couldn't you put a ship into an orbit around the planet?
Given that connectors' strength is the lowest of the two, you could just leave the black one's connector to max and adjust the white one's as necessary for landed docking. Otherwise, very novel idea! Now I want to see the inverse, but with the space carrier launched by similar means. Carrier carrying a carrier!
Rather nifty concept to see rendered in space engineers. Could make for a viable method for getting cargo in to orbit without needing hydrogen thrusters
Do you have a build up already that tackles the problem of getting into space for the first time? I'm an erratic enough player that I've actually yet to achieve that, and am wondering what a sane approach would be. Looks like I should consider grabbing the speed mod for it, though - make hydrogen thrusters (if I make e.g. a disposable rocket stage merged/connected to a lighter atmo/hydro lander) need a lot less burn time overall.
cool! I was trying to make a no engine glider that could be launched from space and land safely with this mod, couldn't do it, you should have a go at it if you want.
you can drop drones using that aircraft as a carrier if it was longer you could have 2 or 3 drones or to send fake sos signals in to space to get other players attention and then whene they get to it they will find more people like them and fight over it.
What Would Happen If ... you made the wings more crescent shaped to extend the wheels up to the nose of the white ship, would it still fly and prevent that nose tipping ?? effectively increasing the wing area by a third I'd estimate just eyeballing it.
i guess there kinda is a purpose if you just want to get into space without too much effort or something. of course, then you'd be out in space pretty much without anything except what you have on your character but maybe that's just how some people would like to do it.
What if I can overpower the gravity of the planet by say, using a lot of gravity gens. Could it be possible to suspend an aircraft or station in an atmosphere without the use of thrusters?
Hi wasted! I have a question, how do you make the front wheel work on the black ship? It is not attached to a suspension i see. What is going on there ?
Shouldn't you remote control the white ship from the black ship? You wouldn't have to manually switch cockpits mid-air.
Sorry to those folks on the Hitbox stream last night that have already seen this.. but the results were so surprising and honestly pretty cool that I just had to share it :)
There are still some small changes, i remember the black fish having 4 ions in the back, glad to see the idea already improving.
Well, in my timezone (EST), your night is our afternoon meaning I'd've missed your stream on a weekday.
hehe yeah karras, as always it has some small changes still :) But still you guys saw most of!
***** The last would be finding a context to give it good use, the puppeteer to print fighter drones or a floating mid-air repair bay. also merge the 2 into 1 bigger ship with a nose capable of going into space and leave the "wings behind"....
I has potential.
Is Space Master a mod or a ingame feature?
Great concept, gets me excited for things working right in SE. Let's put Engineering back into Space Engineers, shall we? XD
engineering in space engineers??? heresy :P
POTATOES!
what i think is this idea could be used (after reworking) to have the black ship be a cargo transport, and the white becomes a basic low resource method of getting it into space (or if your in space an easy way down) would be great for early game survival.

i'd love to see a station assembled from modules brought up by a space plane ala the ISS.
Can't you just have a ship with atm. Thrusters and Ions To get to Space ? I Use Speed unlimited and i can get to Space with atm. Only
Marc Klein
I've seen someone build one of those.
I've never had that game run so smooth. Is this the result of some miracle update?
keemstar the fat loser Taking after your role model, I see.
this is really cool , but how about using a remote control block to control the white stage from the black stage
thats what i was thinking, Sit in the black ship remotely controlling the white one, set up a timer block to sort out all the disconnection and at the same time set the white ship to fly back to a GPS position (or back and forth between a couple incase it wants to fall out of the sky!?). I want to see bomber version of the white bird. looks perfect for bomber use with that giant space under it
I made a vanilla ship that can get to space without hydrogen thrusters or mods. I think it just has the right balance of atmo and Ion thrusters to make the transition from atmo to space. I haven't seen it done and wanted to try it. It is a large ship build.
If you want to reduce the sideways motion, try using vertical fins.
if he was just using Digi's wings that'ed work, but with this mode they would add extra drag.
to clarify, hes not using Digi's wings, well i mean he IS but they have absolutely no effect on movement/speed than any other block of similar dimension does
Was a very interesting stream, and a very good idea that was executed near flawlessly.
Stay inspired!
that is awesome mate... perfect for those who'd want a fast inexpensive way into space .. AND back again... with ease..
Nothing worse than constant crash landings.. and a trek and a half from your home base to go and get the supplies and/or salvage the crash site...
I'm so glad I was there for the stream, but this revision of it looks and operates so much better. Nicely done w4stedspace!
make four waypoints above the airfield and stick a remote control on the lifting craft. cool design, love all this concept building recently
W4sted! There's a script that makes blocks slowly break down, it's called the block degrading
It would be interesting to see a parasite version of a Broadsword or a Rapier, and to see how you would set that up.
I did think that would be the obvious next step :) Can it be done in reverse essentially, a carrier space craft that drops and then re-docks with aero craft for combat deployment and cargo delivery etc :) Gonna have to try it!
Awesome! Excited to see it, man!

hmmm, the shuttle part can land at 30m/s? this is gonna make rovers interesting.
You guys should do this in Season 2. It would be really useful, and it's very legit.
+w4stedspace you are under valuing this thing, the issue of extraction can be solved by using the parasite craft to boost it to space, via hydrogen, also instead of the cockpit hoping, you can put a rc block in the Atmospheric craft and control from the parasite craft cockpit

TYPOS ARE MY SPECIALTY, TOO!
LMFAO

Wheel lock like the safety lock on rotors? Perhaps when you hit you're suddenly going so fast that the system automatically locks it into place?
Wasted could you upload it to the workshop, and maybe add a RC block to the top part for control from the bottom one.
i would like to see more of this idea expanded on and kept going
You never cease to amaze and entertain w4sted, keep up the good work and the nifty ideas.
You should use this setup in your series with Morph!
I always seed my planetary survival games by dropping a few ships randomly across the planet from orbit. Thrusters often survive and can be harvested.
Hey W4sted is it not possible to have the atmo ship to be set up for autopilot?? This way you can sit in the ion ship, trigger the autopilot, then once you reach the correct height you detach and fly off. After this your atmo ship turns around and lands back at base ^_^
that is so awesome w4sted I need to try this mod
I like it, I play with the realism mods so good job
Wow nice work W4sted!
You come up with the coolest stuff man
You can also easily turn it into a one man version by using a merge block instead of a connector, and remove the cockpit from the first aircraft, basically turning the first aircraft into a disposable wing attachment.
This made me very very happy to watch for some reason.
Maybe when you try to do the re-dock thing, you could use a censor to auto dock?
+w4stedspace you should try out a mod called MArmOS, not just because i want to learn how to use it without directly asking you to ask me, but also because it would be really interesting to see what you would come up with.
i kinda wanna see these ships on the work shop as well as the ship you used for the planet re entry thats covered in hydrogen thrusters
>How am I supposed to do it otherwise?
Is it not possible to get out, get in your OTHER cockpit first and disengage from the 2nd craft?
Could be an interesting surface to orbit interceptor. maybe replace the bottom part with some sort of guided missile/light fighter?
you could leave the connector strengths up, and just unlock and switch the connector off from the small ship, that way you wouldnt have to chase the small ship after leaving the larger one, and all from the tool bar :D
Have you considered locking the wheels as soon as the top is lined up before uping the magnetism on the bottom connector?
the carrier plane reminds me of the imperial shuttle from Star wars. really awesome wasted.
Interesting exercise. Very creative.
Make the carrier a drone and fly the parisite, that way you could fly them both back without space master. you could even make the carrier run a GPS holding pattern over the main base or even automate the whole thing with scripts and timers.
very much like, good job w4sted
ok now a mother ship for these thing. planetary exploration or something. oooo they do sorta resemble death gliders. think stargate. oh extend the skis ad a couple roll-bar wheels, and dresser up like a war-bird. maybe another connector on top to nest them together or something.
you could kinda use it as a "skydive plane glider" carrier to launch gliders up high in the air kinda like planes carry skydivers high up
i can't wait till you make an SSTO based plane that heavily relies on fuel and gliding, that'll be a very interesting kerbal approach to the challenge :p
If you used Whip's rotor VTOL script you could probably control the combined plane from the seat of the spaceplane so you don't need to switch cockpits when undocking.
i wouldn't have thought that'd work with gyros, given the behaviour of rotor turrets, so i think that might be a little hard to control.
That batman sign shaped shadow under the carrier part whet it landed
+w4stedspace Great design! Waiting to see it on the survival series :D (like going to repair an old satellite in orbit or something like that ;D)
That's pretty cool.
Why are you fiddling with the connector settings every time they hook up? Why not just unlock and then turn off the connector on the white ship?
also is it possible to rig the carrier plane you made to automatically activate a remote block that makes it return to base after you've ejected from it? perhaps a sensor that detects when the black craft is seperated from the carrier, that could work as the activation for the remote block to start a route.. hopefully it won't need any scripting and no more than one timer block at most.. thats another thing that could be interesting, the goal is to make every piece of hardware re-usable after all :)
hi Wasted, you could save yourself some hassle by using remote control block on the carrier aircraft and pilot it from the parasite
Very nice. But you don't even need engines when the magic floating ship bug kicks in. Just had this happen with a big ship. Space Engineers doesn't want to play today. :(

nice dude I like the concept
Awesome Design!
maybe a concept you can work on a drop pod that can land on planets (make it as tactical as possible and make it require as less materials as possible
I really like the idea, but having said that, wouldn't you be better off just using a ship with ion thrusters and atmospheric thrusters? In the video you demonstrated that atmospheric thrusters begin to fail where ion thrusters take over, so you would be perfectly fine using a hybrid.

What about using landing gear instead of connectors to lock them together?
Slant the wings out on the front edges a bit and it'd look a bit like a Bird of Prey lol.
make a bomber out of it!! great video w4stedspace!!
The application of this could be a kamikaze type deal with the black one as a warhead with the mod the speed would make it better than most explosives
Could you plleeeeaaasse upload this to the workshop? When I watched this video, I got really inspired and excited to test it out myself
😃
Paraphrasing:
"You must be wondering how I landed both of them, when there's only one of me.
I cheated. What did you expect?"
I love those streams, but,i would like a play list with it, cuz when i miss one is hard to find
I was thinking you would put a remote control block!
oh so the super durpy death wheels even when locked where a result of multi?
nice work
What Would Happen If ... you made the wings more crescent shaped to extend the wheels up to the nose of the white ship, would it still fly and prevent that nose tipping ?? effectively increasing the wing area by a third I'd estimate just eyeballing it.
try taking off with the white part with a remote control block so you don't have to to the "dogy maneuver"
Whenever I see something like this, I think of Blue Midget and how I'd use a merge block instead of a connector so things will be properly aligned.
I dunno about the little one, but the big one could be used as-is for atmospheric lotus delivery. So, not completely useless, and cool either way.
i guess there kinda is a purpose if you just want to get into space without too much effort or something. of course, then you'd be out in space pretty much without anything except what you have on your character but maybe that's just how some people would like to do it.
use a second connector to help alignment or would that selfdestruct (because it's space engineers) ? :D
This thing makes X-43 (an aircraft launched from the bottom of another aircraft developed for test purposes.)
Turn it around have it like dock top side maybe that helps.
This is why they added remote control blocks
What if I can overpower the gravity of the planet by say, using a lot of gravity gens. Could it be possible to suspend an aircraft or station in an atmosphere without the use of thrusters?
That locking is probbably due to auto-lock on any landing gears and speed/safety limit
So.. why not just sit in the sub craft and control the carrier with a remote control?
Hi wasted! I have a question, how do you make the front wheel work on the black ship? It is not attached to a suspension i see. What is going on there ?
Thats an excellent build! yeah, not the best design, but if it works man, it works! Looking forward to the next one Wasted!
So when will season 2 of group survival will come out.
It's......beautiful
I need this on the workshop..
Thanks!
awesome,
you could use it to deliver a cargo rocket to space
