- This video is a review of the Peavey 6505 MH mini tube amp head. The video includes some recorded songs using the amp, along with some demos of the sounds you can get out of the green and red channels. See written review for more details: masters-of-musi...
TSE X50 power amp and IR's used for software parts: www.tseaudio.co...
Sm57 and 4x12 with V30's used for mic'd parts
Joyo Vintage Overdrive used in front of amp
All guitar sounds are raw recordings with no EQing or post-processing. EZdrummer 2 for drums, Ignite amps' SHB-1 plugin on bass.
Boy, the send out sounded really good!
These are supposed to do metal with no pedals, but all the demos use pedals. It's infuriating.
Gotta agree. I just wanna hear what the amp sounds like , not the amp & a pedal.
I think the lead channel sounds amazing on these amps. But mine has a pulsing white noise when cranked up when not playing. Not sure if thats normal
it will be mine. oh yes...
...it will be mine
He does this every friday lol
Did you purchase that item?
@@jaychen2000metal no. I hate myself
@@richardpaulus9823 you can't have speakers with a lot of low mid because the amp already does imo
They are cheap on Facebook marketplace
Great review. Do you need the overdrive pedal? Also, when you use the send OUT, are you getting the tone from the amp to the recording interface?
Did u use a noise gate with the tube screamer? And how is the best way to hook up a boss noise suppressor and a ibanez ts9 into a peavey 6505mh. I have the 6505mh and i just ordered the ts9 and noisegate and i dont want to pierce my eardrums like ehen hooking a distortion pedal into a dirty channel into front of amp. All these items are new to me its my first tube amp and noise gate and ive had distortion pedals that i plugged into clean channels of solid-state amps but thst all. PLEASE HELP!!!!
Great vid! i used the minihead for giging and for recording, really like the build-in audio interface! With a stratocaster you have a new planet to discover!
guys I can't make up my mind between this and the Marshall DSL20 or EVH 5150 III 15W. I'm just looking for a good detailed, chunky/roaring recording metal tone for the mix. Please help !
I used to have two of those line 6 cabs. I sold one but i still swear for the price it has the best speakers. Currently i run a wet/dry rig with a 6505+ and want to shrink it down power wise. Gonna keep the same setup with dry going into the left side of the cab and wet going into the right
I've never owned a tube amp, so this may be a dumb question. Does the dummy load for the msdi affect the send, or is it necessary to run into a cab still? Nice review, btw.
You can use the send and MSDI without a cab connected thanks to the speaker disable switch; that's how I did the non-cab parts with the send going into an audio interface. Most tube amps require a cab connected though or it could ruin the amp, but you can turn the volume down or plug a loose adapter into the return jack to avoid problems.
My peavy vip 2 sounds like this on the 6505 setting. I have the same joyo pedal. I don't have the built in eq though. Though I've got a 10 band eq it just causes feedback.
I had a vip 2. Totally doesn't compare. Maybe because i got a od and an eq now but this thing slays
Awesome amp!
Cool review!
Cheers from Portugal 🍺🤘
To my ears, send out was far better sound than even mike in front of the cab 😮
XLR sucked not surprised since everyone complains about it.
Thanks for the demo btw 🤘
my footswicth ligyhts up but doesnt do ANYTHING. only lights up, Im in the Channel input, top right of the 4 holes.
just bought one 3 hours ago and a marshal 4x12 with v30s an i fucking love it. its amazing!
I just bought some WGS Reapers and paired them with my Eminence Diezel customs and holy shit. I think i found a spectacular pairing
Hi.. Can this amp handle huge show? I will use it direct with two notes torpedo live. How about you?
i cant crank up the presence and resonance if go to send out, anybody got same issues?
Nice vid, great samples! Question: do you need the speaker out connected to a cab in order to record the fx Send to an interface? So in other words, do you need the load connected? Thanks!!
That is a great question. Normally you would but there is actually a speaker defeat button on the back of the amp that is made for that. If you are using the XLR or USB out, you just push the speaker defeat button in and it simulates the load on the amp, which allows you to safely use the XLR or USB out options.
That is a very good question. I just looked at the manual, and here's what it says about the "defeat switch".
SPEAKER ENABLE/DEFEAT SWITCH
This feature effectively disconnects any speaker/cabinet connected to the SPEAKER OUTPUT (#20) and
redirects the output to an internal dummy load. This enables the user to monitor their playing using the
signal from either the MDSI™ output, USB output or headphone output, without producing any real volume.
Therefore, they can play or record at much lower volume levels.
Always use this feature if the amp is used without a cabinet connected to the SPEAKER OUTPUT (#20).
It's unclear to me from just that part, but when I read further it says,
EFFECTS LOOP SEND
This 1/4” output jack supplies signal to external low-level effects or signal processing equipment. Although
the actual effects loop is footswitchable, the SEND output is always active which can make it useful for
sending the preamp signal to another amplifier.
So it's sounds like the Send is always live, and therefore should be active when using the internal dummy load. I sure hope so because that's one of the main things I'd like to do with this amp once I purchase it. I am not at all interested in the MSDI or USB outputs. I understand why they're on the head though.
That send out caught me by surprise sense most amps sound like shit when recording. Thats amazing.
The 5150 family of amps have always had great sounding preamps.
What DAW are you using ? Also, thanks for the JJ tip! I've been pissing and moaning how "fizzy" this amp sounds since I've had it. The red channel sounds so damn thin . But my JJs come tomorrow so I'm hoping that helps out!
I like Ableton Live's session view to easily put together different riffs quickly. I just hope they finally add audio comping with version 10...
Masters-of-Music thanks!
Masters-of-Music hey man I bought the TSE audio v2.4 package. Can't seem to login to their website despite getting a confirmation email with a file and receipt. Did you have any issues? They definitely took my 70 bucks within mins but I haven't heard from them in over two days.
1:13 What's with all these review videos that put something else in the signal chain... I'm not interested in a "cheap" joyless OD pedal.
GREAT review !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why is your volume so damn low? Post gain needs to be at least 3......
Preamp distortion sounds much better than power amp distortion. The EL84 tubes sound like shit on this amp, imo. It sounds much better through a software power amp sim.
Masters-of-Music change the JJ El84. Rebias it and crank it through a good 412 with the post at 4-5 and you will be floored. Mic the cab and it will sound freaking awesome. That's what I did. Also, change the Ruby tube to a great ECC83 and it becomes a killer.
@@masters-of-music7602 yeah EL84s don't do metal justice really, one of the main reasons i'd
rather deal with the volume of the full 6505 over this.
When you said channel out instead of using the MSDI, do you mean you use a load box or a cabinett?
What's the palm mute chug like?
phantumgrey sick!
phantumgrey Very good
With the Fx send method is it possible to add an eq pedal to shape?I know an vst will do but kinda want an physical pedal.Ts is in front as well
That's what I do. Eq and gate in the loop, TS and gate in front.
This is just a slight tweaked version from the valve king 20mh. Please buy the the greenback 2x12 with it and you will be set for days of metal. If you bought this for any another reason you will be sadly disappointed.
your cab IR's sound like 50x better than the ones i've used with this amp. mine came out sounding thin and almost like you could tell it was a DI somewhere in there..i ran from my FX send as well and used some different Mesa/Peavey cabs, but mine don't sound nearly as beefy as yours. what exactly did you use?
It's probably a lack of a power amp. I used the default Kalthallen Mesa cab that comes with the TSE-X50 amp sim, but the X50's power amp section was also turned on since going out of the send is before MH's power amp. Some IRs account for using a power amp and some don't.
Sooo, i just put some WGS Reapers in my Diezel cab with the Eminence customs and let me tell you something. 9.5/10 all day and they're not even broken in yet...
What cab was used for this demo please ?
How loud can this get?
Too loud.
@@masters-of-music7602 great
I want one of these & a 2x12 loaded with Eminence SwampThangs .....trouble is...............the amps only 20 watts ,,, not sure how well it could push the eminence.
So you recorded using the amps FX loop send, and then used an IR within your DAW?
Yeah, that's the gist of it.
Hi.. Can this amp handle huge show? I will use it direct with two notes torpedo live. How about you?
Ive been using it for rehearsals. It can do a small venue no problem. Volume not the issue. Quality of clean channel when you crank it for small venue is where it lacks.
It would be cool if it could get the tighter low end heavy Metallica type tone. Played this and it’s just too loose for playing thrash. The 6505 on the other hand is a beast. Wish there was a way to get 6L6 rectified distortion at low apartment friendly volumes
Attenuators
Od pedal man. Totally changes that! Set it to 1w mode
Nice bit of shred bro :) I liked the review and found it helpful. First time I've heard of coming right out of the send jack. You said the tone was harsh-ish and I was wondering if you were referencing another amp for comparison. I always like to hear "compared to" examples, or preferences... this little gem is in the company of the Mark V Mesa, 5150 III, Diavlo by Randall, Blackstar Metal, etc. Comments on how the Peavey (or any reviewed head) compare to others like it are always appreciated for us guys trying to zero in on a purchase.
I've been using amp sims for the past couple of years and this was the first real amp I've had in awhile so I can't compare it with other gear. I ended up selling the 6505 MH because I couldn't get the tone I like. It turns out I just prefer rectifier tones better so I bought a used single rectifier and I love the sound of it. It has a nice powerful, cleaner distortion that lets you hear individual notes better, whereas the MH had a harsher edge to the distortion that made the scratchiness from pick seem too loud and overpowering. It probably didn't help using new V30's that weren't broken in yet...
6505 has more gain than the rectifier i believe at similar gain settings, its also a very compressed gain structure as well which also makes it sound like it has more gain, i never put my gain over 5 on my amp and usually its around 3-4. interesting you say that though because i find the rectifier to sound thin and brittle.
this may sound stupid but how do you adjust the volume
With the volume knob
Rancho casketongi alias pingolo racing and where is that
Hi did u experience overheating yet?
Marc see i have had one for two years with no issues yet.
thanks man. i have one for like 2 weeks. dont have much time maybe like 90min at the time and no issues. but i did remove front panels so its pretty open.
Marc, set the eq all over 12:00 even the resonance and presence
Is this laud enough to jam with a band or gig using a Marshall 4x12 cab
yes
paired with Wizard speaker, it's untouchable.
I need this amp
How do these compare sound wise to the full size 6505 heads?
Pc Gaming 5150 their pretty spot on tone wise. Obviously volume is the biggest difference. With a 4x12 cab i can play with a drummer on 5 watts cranked. A second guitarist plus drums probably 20 watts and maybe tweak the highs a bit depending on if you're lead. The second difference is low end. However, with a tube screamer or maxon OD i think the low end is just fine. But side by side the big model will stand out in terms of that low end thump. But you would really have to listen carefully to tell. If you are worried about volume though id say just save a few more hundred bucks and buy a used 6505+. But if you're looking for something that won't blow your windows out and can still gig this is it. But i only own a 4x12 idk how much air it can push through a 2x12
Thanks sounds like a great amp for $500
To put it in perspective. I just play at home right now. Not doing any live stuff. I owned both the 6505+ head with a 2x12 Vintage 30 cab and the 6505 MH with a 1x12 Greenback cab. Also swapped cabinets both ways just out of curiosity. I ended up selling the 100 watt head and kept the MH. They sound almost identical, other than of course the extra thump you get from the 100 watt. But there are ways to compensate for that with the MH even without the use of pedals. Utilize that 20 watt setting on it for one and turn your resonance up and presence down a little bit. The MH despite being 20 watts can also get VERY loud too.
This sounds like it is the perfect amp for me. There are cheaper options but they lack in area's like the gain or rawness.
Guitarz 5150 I would say buy it! You will not regret it. I have had mine for almost two years now. No problems at all. I just removed the black wood piece behind the front grill for more air flow and boom!
crank that post gain and it sounds much richer!
I literally keep it on 2.75 or 3 or it's too woofy but with an od and certain speakers, it's great. Get some wgs Reapers
@@jaychen2000metal ahhhhhh I get what you're saying. I always have an OD boosting it haha
The IR sounded massive. DId the IRs come from the TSE X50 pack?
Yeah, but they can also be purchased from the respective companies.
Bias drift? Run hot?
I read they run a tad hot. Probably why gain can be set at 3.5 outta 10 lol
awesome
You make it sound like a bad sim. But this is good. Which shows how important is the art of sound engineering.
i disagree i think he gets tones that sound very close the the full 6505 head
why is the msdi even an advertised feature? it sounds like absolute ass. completely unusable in any context
did you use the send + IR with the speaker defeat? that work?
Overdrive pedal? Wanna hear the amp.. just saying ✌️🤘
Am I the only one who heard a constant fizz / buzz overtone when he was chugging? That was annoying af
Yeah thats what im most worried about when buying amps like these .. i hate that fuzzy sound
It could be the cheap overdrive pedal he is using. A noise gate pedal in the fx loop removes any fizz
Mine doesn't sound fuzzy
its those el84s man theyre so shit thats why the mt15 i have kicks the shit out of any amp dude it has full size 6l6 and 6 12ax7s and has the most beautiful dedicated clean channel ever dudes
Controlling the fizz is part of becoming a Metal God.
6l6?

@@ВадимДавликанов You're right el 84
My 6505mh sounds nothing like that.Your gain setting on the lead channel was on 3 and sounded like mine on full gain.
Liegt dann vermutlich an deiner Gitarre bzw. an den Tonabnehmern. Was hast du für eine/welche?
He has a distortion pedal in front of his. Also, likely different pickups
McTwish von Noodles Ok, thanks, I didn't notice that before.
overdrive in front of amp, plus if he is using high output pickups its going to sound more metal.
He might have had the watts on a lower setting too. It sounds like he does.
riffs sounds like Parkway drive absolut power
Sounds killer and tasty riffage
Chug chug chug chug
If you need an overdrive pedal with this amp you're doing something really wrong.
Fukn made in Gina. I won't be getting one.
Have you tried the xlr out into a power amp or only the send?
