Off course on 1w you won't have any headroom. That is the whole point of low vs high wattage amps. It's not volume. It's the ability to get high volumes without over saturating the power amp. Put it on 20w with 4x12 and it cleans up. Still gonna be a 6505 though.
Kyle Bull constantly complains about headroom on EL84 tubes. But like you said exactly it’s not meant for being band and concert volumes. EL 84 tubes attenuate better and sound better when knocked down to 5 or 1 watt. Not as muffled as full size tubes attenuated. Bedroom amps should be EL84. If someone wants a loud head by a 50 watt
"Clean to be clean" ...Said no one EVER who own ANY Peavey 5150 or 6505 amp.😂 These amps are the equivalent of a NHRA dragster...They got ONE job only!!! LOL ...Great vid overall and amp sounds great! ....Perhaps trade it for the Classic 20 for great cleans!!! 😊
Hello Chris, that was the best test & demo on the 6505mh that I've seen You covered the real sounds of what that amp was meant for .good playing too . Some others don't test the way the given amp was intended for , good job.
The whole point of having a 1 watt setting is to get earlier break up, and lower volumes. That's what it's SUPPOSED to do. If you want clean headroom at higher volumes, you need to use higher wattage settings.
I finally found someone who uses the mid knob and doesn't "djent" on a 9-string. I've been looking for a small amp that I can get some classic thrash tones with (say, Rust in Piece by Megadeth or Ride the Lightning by Metallica) with lots of punch for gigs, but can still stay quiet since I live in an apartment (I mean, a tube amp with a headphone jack? HELL YES), all while staying affordable. I think this video has convinced me, thank you for this
Very good amp for thrash tones but I suggest pairing this amp with a tube screamer in front to boost the signal going in because the bass needs a little tightening.
Dammmm.... I love that clean channel. It's like Soldano labels his amps. Crunch and overdrive. Really nice chops BTW. I'm def buying this amp. Thanks for the Demo!!!!! (BTW.. buy a Marshall DSL 15H if you want a Blackface Fender clean and a really dirty OD channel.)
sounds good to me even through a camera microphone! Nice playing, it would be interesting to see if you still get the "dirty clean" with passive pickups. Glad I bought one! Thanks.
@@cegant I would like to buy an Mesa Mini Rectifier but mesa is so expensive in europe. It's like €1600 for the mini rectifier which is about $1750. So I go Engl
Singing FEDEX MAN i have a 6505+, i did nerd out and put low gain tubes in the slots that go to the clean channel, and use compression and reverb, but i get a killer clean from that amp
Cool demo but some things I would like to note since ive had mine for over a year now: 1) You can get a pristine clean out of this. Its even better than the full sized 5150/6505. Roll back the gain a knob and lower the volume pot on your guitar slightly. (and one of my guitars is using the EMG JH set so this does work) 2) BOOST IT!!! I mainly play on the crunch channel with the gain at 7. I use a maxon OD808 or 808x ( i have both) with the gain at 0 and balance up 2/3 to all the way. And even with those settings, im getting great old school metal to thrash tones. I do the same thing on the lead channel except the gain is only at 3 and its brutal as fucking boosting it with an overdrive. It really tightens up the low end and gets it saturated nicely. Here is a video I made. It's not a great demo since im actually demonstrating a problem I am having but you can hear a bit of my setup none the less. If you want a better demo, let me know and I can shoot something tomorrow. Mind you, I am only using an iPhone camera ua-cam.com/video/_M60dU-vJy0/v-deo.html
Most people going into this purchase aren't expecting a great "Clean" but you can get clean. I like the 5w setting personally. Keep the Pre gain under 4 and then up the post gain. Don't be afraid to use those mids either. This is one of the better demos out there BTW
That's odd..my 6505 MH can get clean sounds just fine even on the 1 watt setting. One very easy way to do it though, turn it on 20 watts, turn up the post gain and start from 0 on the pregain and very slowly turn it up until it's a fitting volume. That helps alot. And can still be at a manageable volume. Also just messed around with my own with both single coils and humbuckers. Sounds especially fantastic on clean with single coils. Humbuckers is decent too and still clean.
4:13 my guess is that when it starts to break up you can CUT some of the frequencies with the EQ dials or EQ pedal, which should leave you with the benefits of Gain (increased sustain) without the saturation
but yeah not sure why these Knobs start distorting at such low positions such as 3 or 4, should be more towards 6 or 7... it seems to be a common problem with circuit designs
On one watt, turned up like that, you are getting power tube breakup too. I run mine on the 20w mode, with gain around 3 and the post-gain about 4, to get a clean. You can also change the v1 to a 12at7 to great really clean The crunch channel is a beast. I also recommend not scooping those mids, this amp sings with the mids around 6-7.. I've had my mh for a year or so, and play it all the time.
wayne fry Agreed, I have the mids on mine at the same. I barely boost the treble or bass on the eq and do most of my adjustments with the resonance and presence knobs. I personally find the 5 watt mode a lot better than the 1 watt mode, I usually record with 5w and about 6-7 on post gain for the rhythm. For cleans I like the pre-gain around 5 and I could split my humbuckers and roll back a tiny bit for good cleans that I can go to dirt easily. 20watt mode sounds the best overall, sounds deeper, but for recording (mostly what I use this amp for) I use the 5 watt mode to get some power tube distortion out of it.
Boo Radely is the higher the watt, the more headroom huh? Good to know! Seems like since I’m in a apartment I’ll be going DI into my interface on 20 watt mode
these recordings with "room mic" like you did sound so much more lively than the other line out recordings that "professional" retailer channels use... there's something about AIR MOVING that sounds fascinating to me
Lots of factors affect the clean channel, you could have it on the lowest setting on the back which won't push the speakers and will break easier, but will sound worse because it was not pushing the speaker, also how much gain vs main volume etc, active vs passive pickups, how hard you are strumming, how big your speakers are....if you want perfect cleans this is NOT the amp for that, it can give you very usable cleans but not what you might be looking for.
Boy, you sure are all over the place when it comes to your opinion of this amp. Heard you say at least three times already that you love the rock tones of this anp but then you go on in the comments to say you werent impressed at all with it and think the boss katana is superior. Lol. I think the katana blows
I am really considering getting one of these. Do you still use one? I cannot find anything for my needs at $500 that can beat this amp. the closest of the EVH LBX but that is $200 more and you lose features.
Hi Chris, nice video. I have Boss Katana head for bedroom playing, I'm thinking about getting 6505MH, I saw your Katana video - is it worth to upgrade in your opinion?
This is the best review ever made for this amp and I wish I watched this demo before I bought my 6505mh. The amp has so uncontrollable gain. Once you crank it up you lose control over the fizziness and zzzzzz sound. Its ok for its value consideting 20 watt power only however if time goes back, nah, pass of course. But thanks a lot for the video, i wish it was in a higher quality but its honest and I loved it. Big like.
that clean actually sounded pretty damn decent to me. Yeah, it's no fender twin or anything, but it's playable. It's a metal amp, it's expected to deliver lots of gainy madness, not made for superb clean anyway.
I like it ! Thanks .like your playing.like a George lynch sound .awesome Andy LaRocque ! 🤟I'm trying to get one cheap.killer amp Not a clean amp really
Well, it was turned up pretty loud and I was sitting 2 feet away from the speaker. If I were distanced from the speaker cabinet, it would not get the feedback squeak as much.
INeverWanted2010 you can get clean sounds from this amp just fine, the reviewer just has the pregain too high. It only needs to be at 1 and preferably on the higher wattage settings to ensure more head room.
Back of the gain when you go high on volume. It takes pedals very well on crunch channel, boost it and you'll be blown away. Changing those Chinese tubes is mandatory. Amp will go clean, but make sure you're on 20W mode and not using very high output humbackers. Maxout rhythm post volume, and use pre-gain rhythm as volume. Nice playing and demo.
Lmao, changing the tubes is preference, not necessary. Been doing live sound for a decade now, you can get almost any sound you want out of anything if you know what you're doing.
low gain AlNiCo pickups should allow you a cleaner sound. This amp seem to break up very easily, looks to me that it has been designed to be a super voracious half stack.
With such a high gain amp, and only 2 (not 3) channels, in order to get clean, you should have the pre-gain around half of what you have it (yes, like 2) ,have it on the 20 watt setting with post gain around 9, and the bright switch engaged...jus' sayin'
The 5150/6505 never had a good clean channel. That came with the 5150 II/6505+ versions. If you look at the schematic, it's essentially just a one channel amp. The clean/crunch setting just knock out some gain stages. People back then mainly bought the amps for the gain sounds. Still do. Many guys back in the day, myself included, actually preferred the crunch setting for most stuff. Nice playing BTW.
Great demo. One criticism would be your inability to get a workable clean tone. These amps have a surprisingly good clean up. Back of the rhythm channel gain and nudge the post a bit more. It works a treat. Roll off the guitar volume a bit for better results. Also back off the gain in general. Use a tube screamer for boost and it will give that chunky, meaty thrash metal tone while cleaning up the bottom end. This will reduce the farting. Keep up the great work. Subscribed

Chris Tompkins Really?! A dude with mad skills prefers digital over tube?!!! Wow uv given much to think about. I haven't tried a Katana yet. Do you find any guitar sounds good thru it. Single Coli and/or humbuckers?
I was originally going to just get a Boss Katana for $329 with a 1x12" but to be honest i think this head with some pedals and a 1x12" cab would sound infinitely better even though it would cost more overall.
Guitarz 5150 Everyone has their own tastes. I will say though that, for me, the katana eats this head. And, no tubes to maintain. Best of luck with whichever you go with. 😊😊
The Katana is Really that good? I will have to really do a side by side sound test at the store. The katana would be less money i would have to spend so i hope you are right. :)
I was going to buy the same Katana with the foot switch, which would've been around $440 ish. I then found a 6505mh with an orange ppc112 (vintage 30) for $600. I'm really happy with my decision, the amp has delivered everything I want and without the option paralysis I was worried about with the Katana. Clean, crunch, face melting gain, and I like to throw a big muff in and it's a beast.
had the Boss Katana 100 1x12 .... Didnt like that the knobs wpould sometimes change, especially in the gain section. and the boost section, I could turn it down then back up & have a differnt tone. Minor issue but didnt like that.
his lights are green throughout the whole video, when he puts it to standby that's when it shuts off the signal to the tubes and the color goes red but the second he put it back from stand by they're green lol
It's called Rythm, not Clean, if you expect clean from a Peavey 6505, I think you forgot to do some research man, you don't get a metal amp for cleans!!! :) A Marshall will get clean...ish, a Peavey will get even less clean...ish, always been the case since the Plexi and 5150.
Well for starter you're complaining about it being clean ,its a peavey 6505 probably most people that purchase these like me dont purchase these amps for a clean sound I bought one for the sound of the overdrive in the first place other things I play are van halen type stuff, this amp wasnt made for the country guy playing old hank Williams stuff it's meant for Rock stuff ,anyway I own one and i like every channel but then again knew what to expect when i bought it maybe if a person invest money in one if these heads they should perhaps know that this is not a clean sweetie amp
The clean doesn’t dial into a useable clean. And it is dull sounding. The crunch is decent but it lacks definition. It’s a big wall of crunch mush. The lead channel is not articulate. Too fizzy. Too much extra noise. The amp comes very close to being a winner. Especially for the price. But fussy ears will be frustrated that it can only get close.
Change those garbage Chinese tubes for some quality ones, use some boost or Eq in front to tight things up and this amp is a killer platform for the money.
Off course on 1w you won't have any headroom. That is the whole point of low vs high wattage amps. It's not volume. It's the ability to get high volumes without over saturating the power amp. Put it on 20w with 4x12 and it cleans up. Still gonna be a 6505 though.

Yes, most amps sound great with the addition of those pedals. However, I only demo the actual capability of the amp by itself.
I use almost the exact same settings on my 6505 MH. I will vary my gain between 4-6 and my low from 5-6.

I really wanted to like mine...wound up getting rid of it.
thoes red lights mean you have bad tubes or your bias is off
Really? This amp was brand spanking new when I made the video. Maybe that was why I didn't care for it and sent it back... oh well... :/
his lights are green throughout the whole video, when he puts it to standby that's when it shuts off the signal to the tubes and the color goes red but the second he put it back from stand by they're green lol
It states right on the amp rhythm and lead, not clean/lead.
Clean channel=something I never use or need.
also ..you change tubes. its got stock tubes. mod it.....
This amp was made hard rock n heavy metal......
There is no clean lol \m/
Single coils are a no no.
This amp dont have clean!!!!
Hi gain so much!!!
TheBnslayer you put it on the crunch channel and dial back the gain.
le vieux souffle derrière, don't buy
Next time turn the bass down, WAY too much.
