    My great granddad was in a horse and cart crash on a stormy night around 1910. The horse came loose from the reins and made its way back to the house and was able to guide the family to the crash scene. Sadly it was too late for great granddad but I always thought it was very clever of the horse. This was in rural Ireland.

    You don’t understand how easy it is to get lost until it happens to you. Back when I was 20 I went to a horse camp in the Bankhead national forest for a weekend of horseback riding. I had 8 years riding experience and so did my two sisters that came along. This was a new trail so we met with two girls who “knew the trails like the back of their hands” and set out on the easy trail to warm up with them leading us. Two hours later we realized we lost the trail, 6 more hours go by and our horses were beginning to develop hoof bruises as the terrain we were on was extremely rugged.. we tried over and over to call for help but we could not find a signal so in a last ditch effort I climbed to the top of a rock formation and attempted to make a call, it went through but with only 1% battery left I barely got out the words “we’re lost” before it died. It had been 11 hours since we entered the trail when the two girls we followed in became hysterical and couldn’t maintain their composure let alone ride their horses and being that they had the only two horses that weren’t limping or going lame we made the decision to take their horses. We left them and my youngest sister behind, gave them my lighter (for a signal fire if we couldn’t find our way back to them) and set off with my other sister on the horses. We decided to test the theory that if you’re ever lost, let go of the reigns and let the horses take you home. Long story short, it worked. Within an hour the horses got us to a highway where we flagged down a car and called for help. We were lost for a total of nearly 13 hours and ended up 10 miles off trail.. our family had called the police hours earlier and they had people on the ground searching for us but the search was taking place 5 miles in the opposite direction. Thank God we found the two girls and our younger sister pretty easily and our dad met us with a trailer to load the horses and take us back to camp. If we had not let the horses take the lead things could have been so much worse. We set out with no food and only a couple bottles of water as we only expected to be gone for two hours tops.

      My sister, who's a very experienced hiker, lost the trail in a park she hiked regularly. She was out overnight in 40° f weather in shorts and a long sleeved t-shirt. Luckily she wasn't injured and had her dogs to help keep her warm. Right before sunrise she realized she could see the airport in the distance and was able to figure out wich direction to start hiking. If she'd been in an unfamiliar park, she might not have been so lucky.
      Horses are 👍 aren't they? Glad you guys were ok.

    Tracks don't "suddenly stop", they just continue and need to be picked up again at some point along their route. Tracks can be measured to determine distance between each foot and that measurement can be marked on a stick, which will literally pinpoint the location of the next track. This process needs to be continued until the tracks are again visible. Its painstaking but necessary sometimes.

    A friend of mine got lost overnight in Glacier. On a well established hiking trail to boot. A guy had gotten lost on the same trail the week prior, but was never found. In any case, there was confusion in a trail turn on the way down and she had gotten split from her group as they assumed she had just jogged ahead a bit. On the route, going down made sense but the proper route was to go up hill for awhile, and the path would eventually take you down. A reasonable mistake.
    She had heard her fellow hikers looking for her through the night but could not find them. She had a whistle and would blow it but they could not hear it at all...even though she could hear them. Why they could not hear her yell out or her whistle was probably due to the way the mountain was positioned between them (canyon type nook). In any case it made me think of carrying a flashlight to shine should you ever get lost, and maybe a firearm to shoot to alert people where you are. Whistles don’t work. It is so easy to get lost yet it just happens upon us when we least expect it.

Often someone fell and ended up under som ledge or crevasse in scraggly terrain along the mountain side that is impossible to see for passerby. There was a moment, where we were rock hunting on a slide and both of us, without knowing what the other was feeling, felt anxious with a feeling we were being watched from the treeline above us! It got so bad for me that I walked over to my husband and said, "let's get the the fuck out of here!" I don't use this language. He responded with "can't do it fast enough!" After getting back into the jeep and driving away, we both realized that we felt something, ominous, almost threatening and it took us out of the camping mood and shortened our trip by days. We are two very experienced campers, both in our later years and have never experienced such discord in a natural setting. Something or someone, didn't appreciate us hanging out in their neighborhood!

      Yup, that's the feeling of being the 'prey', while out in the woods. You and your husband definitely stumbled into the territory of something or someone that maybe doesn't want you there or maybe wants you there too much. I hear grizz attacks are on the rise, especially in Montana. You'll generally know when you are in the presence of a big bear, but every once in awhile you'll get an old, sneaky one that knows better than to make too much noise. It's apparently all the rage right now to have your meth lab out in the woods too, from what I read in the news. When the woods go silent and you have that ominous feeling of danger, it's time to retreat, no matter what it may or may not be that's causing it. Good call.

Her dog stayed with her for days, but she eventually told him to go home (or something of that nature)... The dog ended up going to the beginning of the trail where she started, saw the search party and led them back to her. If she hadn't taken him that day, she never would have been found as she was near death by the time they got to her and was in an area not easily visible.

    I've lived in Hamilton Montana for forty years. It always amazes me that people can get lost here. The Bitterroot and Sapphire mountains are two parallel, fairly low mountain ranges that border the east and west sides of the well populated valley. It would be highly unlikely to be in those mountains and not see the lights and highway in the valley below. Whenever they say someone is "lost" here....my first thought is that a Bear or Mountain Lion had a good meal!

    The Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness (first story: Susan, and the third one, Connie) is some of the most remote and wildest area in the country, short of Alaska. It's hard for people from more populated areas to imagine how vast and uninhabited this area is. The fact that the guide had to ride horseback out 25 miles should give you some clue, though. There are millions of acres of untouched wilderness. There are no roads, not one lives there. Straying away from the campsite and not being able to find your way back can be absolutely fatal--there's just so much for searchers to comb, and it is so rugged and hard to traverse. A very unforgiving landscape.

    We lived in northern Colorado, and literally every year during camping & hiking season the reports of mountain lion sightings or attacks would commence. They are easily camouflaged by their surroundings and notoriously stalk their prey. Add to that a brazen nature that’s not easily intimidated and you have a ferocious predator. Prey is often moved to caves for cubs and not left out in the open. Their scream will raise the hair on the back of your neck.

      i couldn't find anything from the parks service or her family. all my sources just said that there was radio contact, but they couldn't understand what she was trying to say. i wish there was more detail about what they heard. my guess is either, as the person above me said, she was having a stroke, or someone turned up at the camp and was attacking her, and she was trying to call for help mid-assault. or it could just be a coincidence-she tried to make a standard call to them and there was a problem with the radio, and she just happened to go missing sometime later. without more information, it's hard to tell if this contact has anything to do with her disappearance or not.

    • @ThisAlphaWolf
      @ThisAlphaWolf 4 роки тому +2

      @@heavycasefiles From what I read, there was evidence that she had left the cabin on foot, without her radio or her coat (I believe) and had taken a trail that led out deeper into the woods, due to there being footprints that led a short distance down a trail and then seemingly disappearing. Hers and her dogs. Unless she was extremely confused due to a stroke, I wouldn't imagine that she would head deeper into the woods and there was no information indicating that the footprints had any sort of gait issue, as you would likely expect from someone having a stroke. The article specifically mentions that nothing appeared to have been out of place, aside from Connie leaving her coat and radio behind. This area would have been extremely difficult to get to, unless someone knew exactly where they were going and walked or rode in on horseback. I seem to also recall reading in one of the articles that the radio transmission was full of static and cutting in and out. I've followed this case very closely, as I live in Idaho and have relatives that live fairly close to where this occurred. I ran across the article for Connie Johnson's and Terrance Woods' disappearances a few days after the search for both of them happened, when I was looking for updates on a friend's case, who went missing 5 years prior in the same region. His case got no publicity, other than being included on a couple of websites for the missing. Which is probably more related to him being a tribal member than anything else, due to notorious issues with tribal agencies sharing the information with outside sources. These cases tend to get little media coverage, even within our own state. I dont expect you to just take my word for everything that I've said here, but it is indeed all information that that I read, in the days after Ms. Johnson went missing. I find it horrifically fascinating that 2 people would go missing under such odd circumstances, just miles apart and on nearly the same day, in regards to Ms. Johnson and Mr. Wood. Its just strange to me. Anyhow, I want to say thank you for bringing light to Ms. Johnson's case. I don't know her or her family but I can bet that her family could use closure and in my eyes, videos like this one bring necessary exposure to these cases. That's never a bad thing.

    When you consider just how many people go missing annually in the forests and woods of the National Parks service and you realize that the Service DOES NOT keep a list of those who go missing or record ANY data at all it begs the question WHY NOT! I feel awful for those who have been lost, but more so to the families who have to live without the answer of "what happened to them and why can't we find remains?" If I knew that a child or spouse of mine was intending to go into the forests alone I would beg them not to. If you want solitude then go and lock yourself in your room alone but if you DO GO alone be prepared for the fact that it might be YOU who we are searching for in the future. There are things on this planet that we cant explain and some of it is evil. If you are not familiar with David Paulides work then I strongly suggest you get familiar with it. Allira when you realize how immense these national parks and forests are, it makes sense how people go missing all the time. I doubt it has anything to do with big foot or aliens. People go into these mountains not being prepared, no equipment, improper clothing, not enough water or food and no gps trackers. People and their remains can go missing to never been scene again. David Paulidas doesn’t think it’s possible for people or children to be able to travel as far as some people have when they are found, he must not take into account adrenaline or how much stamina a child has. My nephew runs five miles every day with his mother bc he loves it and has energy for days.
