I remember this crackfic I once read that had the reason Applejack wasn't in the McDonald's sets was because she was offended by the quality of their apple pies.
She sure is a silly little pony. it's really sad that Hasbro wants to ignore Applejack, she's been in the franchise since the beginning and should be treated with more respect.
thanks for putting it into words, when I was looking at the merch without her it almost felt like a completely different show, almost as if it was a generic little girl show, adding applejack reminded me that theres an actual world structure
I don’t get why Hasbro is opposed to Country aesthetics? They must realise they have fans from a farming background. Tbh, with the state of recent MLP I’m quite content with having Hasbro keep AJ out of it
it sucks because girls have very few tomboyish/physical labourer types of characters to look up to as it is, and they want to take away one of the few. we need more characters like applejack, not less...
Applejack has always been my favorite out of the mane 6. She's (obviously) honest, hardworking, straight to the point, and showed little me what it was like to have great loving family bonds when I myself didn't have that. I really wish more people and hasbro could see this...
AJ is one of my fav ponies too^^ Along with Twi, Luna and Sunset Shimmer. She was a great pony, but unfortunately, the cartoon crew hated her so she truly got unfairly treated.
Simple answer: Applejack speaks with a Southern accent, these toys are produced in the U.S.A. In most of the US people assume that if you speak with a Southern accent that you're uneducated, prejudiced and dangerous. That Hasbro email literally spelled it out. No matter how many good qualities she has, as long as she says "ain't" and works on a farm, rich Americans will view her as a bad role model and thus, unmarketable.
That would imply the extremely far fetched scenario that those making merchandising decisions had ever actually watched the show or even knew the names of any of the characters, as opposed to deciding that R255 G185 B95 has marketed the worst as a colour.
Seeing the shirts “Friends Forever” and “Best friends squad” with no Applejack gives off the same sad vibes as seeing your “friends” post a pic with the caption like “Just hanging with the besties!”
We Applejack fans have acclimated to her being forgotten and left out. It has instilled into us unwavering resilience and dedication to best pony. The harsh fires of reality forged our strength, and no amount of neglect or exclusion will compromise our resilience. Us AJ fans will emulate the traits exemplified by our beloved underrated yeehaw horsie. She is the rock, the foundation, the grounded cornerstone that every friend group necessitates. She may be silenced, ridiculed, pushed aside, brushed off, but her spirit will NEVER break. So long as she stands steadfast, so too shall we.
Well said, reminded me of "you can take our barn, but you can't take our freedom!" but in this case is "you can take our AJ, but you can't take our fan spirit"
growing up, and still to this day, applejack has always been my favorite. i'm a southerner, and growing up it was really hard to find characters who were southern who weren't the butt of the joke until i saw applejack. so it was always such a shame it was hard to find toys and other merch of her! i still have my first applejack toy to this day. and wow, i had never seen those emails before... honestly to see a core part of her almost stripped away makes me glad we never got the g4 reboot and got current g5 instead. to see that a character i related to so heavily with be seen as a blemish on the brand... that's a different kind of hurt :(
i hadnt realized it until i got older, but yeah, its surprisingly difficult to find southern people in fiction that arent portrayed like theyre stupid. i guess i got so used to it i just didnt notice but wow. most of my childhood movies and show had at least _one_ comic relief redneck and im only realizing now how much that bothers me.
Legit. I feel like so many southern and/or rural characters are either "Cowboy™," "doesn't understand technology," or "blames aliens for all their problems." Applejack is one of the few well-rounded southern cartoon characters that I've seen.
Ok but being orange was the whole reason I loved her when I was little. As an orange obsessed 4 year old she was the only pony I would buy. Now she is my favorite because of her part in mlp history, mom energy, and good work ethic.
I like how this video was recorded in the middle of the void with just appearing pictures and text which would stay on its place for the rest of the video
Compared to the rest, that are all very colorful and have wings/horns, Applejack really sticks out as the more “grounded”design, squinting a bit she looks like a regular horse the most, and even her hobbies/passions are wayy to ordinary compared to the rest, farming just doesn’t sound that glamorous compared to fashion designer, flying acrobat, partying, being basically a disney princess living with forest critters and wizardry. Also I really don’t think adding more brown to her designs with a cowboy hat and sometimes boots helps at all, brown is a very “boring” color in a way, especially for a child. I like applejack as a character but for a franchise for kids her weaknesses are pretty obvious
I think your perspective on farming being boring is a you issue. I've seen a lot of kids fascinated with farming, and as a gardener I'm fascinated by it myself. Farming is so much more complex and beautiful and HARD than people who don't grow things realize, and I love that having a farmer pony in the show gives that world more representation. Farming is cool, y'all!
As someone who’s literally never watched a single MLP show, I find this so utterly baffling, as, to me, Applejack has always been one of the two ponies with the most iconic designs out of the main 6 (the other one being Rainbow Dash).
There is definite truth to this my dad who usually doesn't always remember stuff from my interests absolutely remembers Applejack her and Rainbow Dash are always the first two he mentions if I talk about mlp. One of my coworkers too who doesn't really care for mlp said she likes Applejack and thinks she's cool. Not to mention Applejack literally helped me get my job I brought my Applejack plush with me and they liked that she shared colours with my jobs logo and uniforms. Applejack in general is favoured in my town due to it being known for its farming and such. Applejack has a little place in our heart here.
@@funkyfeem727 That's super interesting and definitely validates my thoughts about it! Rainbow Dash used to be my favourite as a kid, now being Applejack. As an artist myself working in the field, from a character design standpoint, I'd say they're all solid designs - but these two definitely stand out (and so does Twilight probably, even though I don't like her design as much). I also personally like Rarity, even though I don't find her design particularly memorable. She's actually the one I'd always forget about up until recently 💀 Also, super cute story, congratulations on the job!! \o/
While Fluttershy was my favourite, I very much identified with Rainbowdash's and Applejack's boyishness. Especially Applejack's honesty and stubbornness. As a kid growing up in the city I found her country background 'exotic' almost lol. She's a physically strong, badass, and straightforward character who's true to herself and cares for her friends as well as her Apple family. I think we need more female characters like her, but the world is too afraid of masculine women/girls apparently. I also like her hair/mane style, and her colour scheme reminds me of apple pie and vanilla pudding, and it also happens to be realistic which is a bonus for me. She's seriously, seriously underrated still.
@@UwUImTheoyou finding the country "exotic" is hilarious to me as a southerner. if theres one thing the south aint, its exotic lmao. i cant say i dont get it though, i always preferred the city.
@@LtJackStoneyeah but rainbow dash had rainbow hair and that's usually more marketably girly, even if the character was not so much.as for the other four they had pink or purple in their color pallets and those are "girly" colors that sell well
Rainbow wasn’t girly either and she was one of the most famous fan faves, not to mention that one of the most girly characters rarity got the same treatment (tho a lot less compared to aj) I think it’s a matter of marketing and the fact that when you reduce a character to only their stereotype (very country masc and very chic femme) people tend to dislike the characters. One of the reasons why rarity and aj are loved when they’re both on screen is that they’re directly opposite and thus bring out conflict and with that the best of their characters depth can show and they can both grow. Imo their fall happened after s3/4 it’s like the writers gave up on them
Just so you know: as I kid, I scraped off her outline on my old wooden wardrobe next to my bed, so every time I woke up I would see her, get motivated and work hard at school.
This theory makes so much sense in the color aspect since despite AJ having the same design since G1 her G3 design weirdly changed her coat to be this bright red color with her mane being a light green with blonde highlights probably in an attempt to make her more visually appealing to little girls
I always admired Applejack. I remember balling my eyes out when I saw those sad pony comics about her parents dying. Despite having a missing piece in her family she was always so resilent and self assured, proud of her work. I liked how when Twilight was absent, AJ would take on the leadership role. It's sad though since she was the more well rounded of the mane six she didn't have many flaws or personal conflicts to overcome compared to her friends. She didn't even get her own story arc, she started on the farm and stayed there. When it came to the G5 leaked redesigns of her, they made her the most horse with natural markings and patches. I loved that! However, I nevered agreed with Hasbro exects wanting to make Applejack "evil". What was that about?
funny, because I actually ship twijack due to them both having good leadership qualities above other things :D, but yeah I sadly have to agree, applejack doesn't get much merch which is a huge shame cause she's one of my other favorite ponies
i kinda disagree with some of your points, a major flaw of applejack is that she can be stubborn and set in her own ways no matter how flawed they are, and there are some episodes that touch on that. from the top of my head: the episode where twilight tries to make applejack accept help and she refuses until it burns her out, the episode where applejack is shown to do her farm chores in weird and inconvenient ways to which twi and rarity teach her more effective ones, etc. she also tends to be quite competitive which is touched on with rd a lot i do agree tho that she had like... less of an "arc" i guess? she remained on the farm, she didn't move on to bigger things like the rest of the m6. but i don't think that necessarily means she isn't developed, and it's nice to have a character who's more grounded and knows their place from the start imo ^^
The funniest part to me, was growing up. I was LITERALLY applejack. I lived and worked on a farm. I was the mom friend who wasn’t as reckless my other friends. I was also very stubborn. And sometimes insultingly honest because I was raised with no reason to lie, but didn’t yet have a filter. Fluttershy was and still is my favorite, due to her design and her job. But applejack definitely didn’t deserve to get shoved to the side.
Speaking of the color orange, do you think this is also the reason they didn’t put much effort into making Sunny the main character, since she’s orange too? 😔Dang...
Hardworking doesn't resonate with kids. Farms don't resonate with (many) kids. Apples don't resonate with kids. And any kid that don't want to be girly... have Rainbow Dash, the COOL one. Makes a lot of sense why AJ wasn't marketable.
i still think of the Friendship is Witchcraft joke of "have an apple" "I'm an American". she was doomed from the start. Americans be eating cheeseburger
All of the rest of the mane 6 have pink/purple in their designs, their eye colours stay in the blue to purple range and Applejack is the only one of the mane 6 to wear any accessories. Paired with her orange coat and lack of fantastical features (wings or a horn), she was really destined to be the most excluded of the group. It doesn't help that her mane and coat colours are the closest to the regular colours of real life horses, making her look even more plain by comparison. A lot of people think it's because of in-show content, like her playing in the mud or having a southern accent, but marketing teams rarely if ever actually watch the shows they market for. They just have the character design in front of them and nothing else. So those are basically non-factors when it comes to why she was excluded from merchandise.
I remember thinking of a while back a mlp horror series where there is a lost and forgotten main character that slowly haunts the show and corrupts it Turns out Hasbro beat me to the punch with Applejack lmao
Though Fluttershy eventually became my overall favorite, Applejack was the first pony I became invested in. The fact she was strong, hardworking, and basically a personification (ponification?) of the notion of Southern hospitality made her so endearing to me. I guess she could be called a Southern stereotype but at least she's a positive one? My best friend at the time was from the South and he saw Applejack as great representation.
@@ToiletDestroyer2000 there's also the stigma that black cats cause bad luck, which leaves them less likely to be adopted by people due to the stigma around them leading them to be killed or put down sadly.
honestly... as tin foil hat-y as it may sound, I think this is sorta part of it, in a roundabout way. Southerners get a bad rap for being "mean," "bigoted," and/or "stupid," and therefore they fear promoting a southern main character is somehow going to be a bad look for the brand. While i don't actually think they're trying to push a political agenda with the technicolor horse show, i do think they're afraid of criticism from people who do have a bad opinion of country people if they do promote AJ... particularly considering she has a LOT of stereotypical country traits outside of just the accent (farmgirl, brutally honest, hardworking, etc.) Im from the south, and have a very thick accent, and do not look it at all (very "edgy" style, lesbian, young person who uses a cane sometimes.) Very regularly I see people look like they've seen a ghost when i start speaking to them, like they cant comprehend a person like me being country. There's definitely a bad stereotype about it, so i can 100% believe hasbro would try to avoid getting any bad attention due to having a country main character because of it. anyways, sorry for the essay, just some thoughts i have
Or it might becoming too racist, because of her skin color is orange, compared to the blacks. This harkens back to the civil rights movement in the 1960’s.
@@Looona_fan Well, she was inspired by Surprise from G1. But her name and appearance were taken from Pinkie Pie, a G3 pony. Same goes for Rarity and Rainbow Dash: Inspired by Dazzler and Firefly respectively, but were taken from the G3 Rarity and Rainbow Dash.
Now I know why my mom could rarely get me a toy of her :'( she was my favorite as a kid, I grew up in the country so seeing her was very comforting to me, she was a female character I could finally relate to
I always thought of it being a mix of her being the most mature one out of the group and her being a southern character. She's the mom friend of the group, which i believe lots of kids would like about her. But comparing her to pinky, twighlight, and rarity. Then yea, most kids might just like the more expressive characters. Also, with her being a tomboy, rainbow dash is also one. But with her, she's the 'cooler' one. She does the fun crazy sports and makes rainbooms and is awesome. (The shows descriptor of her) While applejack is just a down to earth farmer, she's someone you'd most likely meet in real life.
As someone who was a fan of MLP as a little kid, I can confirm that Applejack was indeed the least appealing to me because of her more down to earth personality and aesthetic. But now that I’m older I’ve come to quite appreaciate her as I always should’ve!
@@hollytheanimalcrossingfanshe did not cause she had similar complaints to applejack where they were considered to have lees personality. Her fan base now is a lot bigger tho
I really like Applejack. Her blunt, hardworking, and sassy personality is usually enjoying to watch. She's exactly how I'd imagine a horse to act if one were to be capable of human speech and thought. Such a shame Hasbro went out of their way to deliberately not include her in most merchandise.
Each of the mane six in beginning of FiM to the end of FiM: (Twilight Sparkle) Beginning: Apprentice to the ruler of Equestria End: Ruler of Equestria (Rainbow Dash) Beginning: Wonderbolts wannabe End: Wonderbolts captain & coach (Pinkie Pie) Beginning: Working at a bakery End: Married and a mother (Fluttershy) Beginning: Living in a small cottage with a few animals End: Running & managing a sanctuary with many animals (Rarity) Beginning: Owns & manages one boutique in a small town End: Owns & manages multiple boutiques across Equestria (Applejack) Beginning: Works at a family owned farm End: Works at a family owned farm
I remember actively ignoring certain lines of mlp toys simply because they excluded applejack. I WANTED my full set. Honestly, I still do. Fuck Hasbro lmao
tbh I feel like "tomboy farm girl" AJ is more relatable to child viewers than "haute couture fashion designer" Rarity. While more kids probably aspire to be fashion designers, there are plenty of kids still living and working on their family farms. I think AJ is, as stated, more boring, as she is less likely to take risks and is very level headed.
the fact that sunny and hitch are orange too but still even in the new season or whatever they want to call it (ponyman into the ponyverse😦 ponyman no way home) applejack isnt even there either boils my blood
A southern character that isn't a complete idiot, joke character, or moral antagonist? Oh the humanity! You think she'd be a staple character since she can appeal to horse girls, but I guess since she doesn't have loud colors or an exaggerated/loud character means that she has no place in the bran-I mean show.
I grew up with more farms around and working with cattle and horses and whatnot so I never quite picked up on her being all that 'unrelatable' right away
Actually yes. When I was a little girl Rarity and Rainbowdash were my favs, now rewatching it as an adult Applejack is my favorite because I think she's the kindest, most caring and the best friend. My least fav is Rainbowdash now lol
I always thought the whole “AJ being a background pony” thing was a joke, but after seeing this video and how she’s been excluded from certain toys and merch makes me rethink things
She embodies traits such as honesty, hard work, and loyalty. Her down-to-earth nature and straightforward personality make her relatable and likable to many viewers. Applejack is the "Element of Honesty," and she consistently represents integrity and dependability. Her strong moral compass and willingness to help others resonate with audiences. Her strong ties to her family and the importance she places on family values are appealing. The relationship dynamics with her siblings and grandmother add depth to her character. As a hardworking farmer, Applejack is often seen working on her family’s apple farm, Sweet Apple Acres. This dedication to her work and the sense of responsibility she carries is admired by fans. Her southern accent, cowboy hat, and occasional witty remarks add a unique charm to her character. She often provides comic relief with her straightforward and sometimes blunt observations. Although she's a traditionalist, Applejack can also be adventurous and open-minded, showing that she can balance her values with flexibility when needed.
Sunny looks like their scrapped Applejack redesign. Interestingly, enough Sonny’s not very popular or liked compared to other pony characters, maybe her color scheme has something to do with it and the fact that she’s a little “boring” too.
I always used to think if any of the ponies didn’t make it to marketing and stuff, that would be rarity, don’t get me wrong, she’s my fav out of all the ponies but by my childhood memories, i did not remember her existence at all until I re-watched the series. Like i had literally NO image of her by my childhood memories. Even when i started rewatching i questioned if she was a main character at the beginning or not. I just had an image of all the ponies except for her. Proud to say that now she’s my very favourite as she should
Yap session incoming ya'll As someone who grew up in the south, had cowgirls for aunts, literally lived next to a farm & helped feed the cattle; I was not an Applejack fan when I was a kid 😭 I liked her but she wasn't ever my favorite, and I defo think it was bc she was kinda boring compared to the rest of the main 6. There were character's that flew, could do magic, and were every color of the rainbow, so she would fade into the background sometimes. Now that I'm older she is nostalgic for me and how I grew up, but I couldn't relate to her the way I related to Fluttershy and Twilight. Thank GOD they didn't turn her into a new character because she's severely underrated. Southern character's aren't that common, especially one's that aren't just stereotypes, so I've grown to appreciate her a lot. I can see why she wasn't popular with kids but I think the older fans, including me, can relate to her more often than not. She's my fave horse/cowgirl representation and I'll defend her to my grave
It makes me so sad to see her pushed to the side so often, I love her so much and I find it so cool how she had been a consistent named character in every single generation, but now she is just forgotten. Justice for AJ, hope she is brought back as a more important character
It's so weird to me that they didn't like applejack being orange and then they proceeded to make two of their new main characters different shades of orange
Applejack is the most functional out of all the Main Six. While she literally stated in a song she’s a people pleaser type, she still is more resilient, versatile, balanced and mature because off all the responsibilities she carries in her daily life. Compare her to the others especially in the first seasons, Fluttershy is borderline agoraphobic, Rainbow Dash is a megalomaniac, Twilight is antisocial, Rarity is vane, and Pinkie Pie is on drugs (lol) 😂. Applejack brings a sense of reality and sincerity to the surreal world and events of MLP and that is good. Applejack is the ROCK of the group. ✊🍎
I feel very offended by the way you called my precious, innocent and shy pony, Fluttershy... (Joke, hehe) Well, i mean, she's just introvert and shy, this is even in her name. She may also have stage fright and social anxiety (this one maybe not) and she may learn the same thing over and over... But even with all those "flaws", she's very important in the show because she teaches the audience to be kind to every creature, to have empathy and also how to stand up for ourselvers, for the animals and for what's right, with kindness. It's hard to be kind sometimes but it's never impossible (I'm still learning for example...)
@@flowersshy16 the mistreatment of Applejack is even more baffling when you consider they ALL are an integral part of the show and its message, despite their flaws and in spite of fans having a favorite out of the bunch, quoting ‘Grogar’ out of all characters: “one is strong, another is weak, and together they make a formidable force”. Fluttershy and Applejack might also have more in common than people think, both are big sisters and outdoor workers, it’s just that Fluttershy wasn’t naturally assertive and upfront before, making her a polar opposite to Applejack. Part of Applejack’s ‘unpopularity’ may be due to the fact she’s less blatantly flawed than the others making her appear less relatable, at the same time the problems she deals with are kinda more relatable to adults than they are to kids. My favorite is actually Twilight ngl, I’m nerdy and antisocial 🤣.
I noticed this from the very beginning because Applejack was always my favorite. In recent months, Hot topic has gone back to selling some G4 MLP items. They have A bracelet set of 5, and the pony missing from the set is actually Rarity. I actually find it both funny and annoying that the bracelet set has A "1 star" review rating because its few reviews are complaining about no Rarity being in the set. Yes us Applejack fans have put up with this for years!
The biggest (but not the only one) problem with Applejack. Was that in G4. She rarely got many episodes dedicated to her character. Or even that many good ones. The fan base fell in love with every other pony. The show had to offer mostly because. They just had more to offer with more episodes dedicated to them. Plus Applejack as a character. Didn’t always have that much personality in compared to the others.
Yeah, looking at all the merch, I could see how an orange pony wouldn't fit in. Maybe if at least she had Mac's color pallet, she'd stand out more? And maybe a green mane and tail? I'm no artist, but it would make her stand out at least a little more instead of being on the orange color spectrum. It also doesn't look good when she wears Granny Smith's scarf in the finale. It's the same color as her.
not that long ago i found some old mlp character stickers i had hidden away, like the kind theyd give u after getting a shot at the doctors, or going through the bank car line and they see theres a kid in the vehicle, and upon going through these stickers, i found it odd that i had all of the mane 6 (including a couple dupes) except applejack. i had to know if there was some way i could obtain one online to finish the set, so i looked them up only to find out that there was no applejack sticker. there never was an applejack sticker. it was then that i realized applejack being a background pony was never just a bit
Out of the mane 6, I personally considered Rarity to be the slightly lacklustre one. (At least in the main series). Why? 1. Twilight was always the star of the show and later became an alicorn. Obviously special. 2. Pinke Pie was known for her personality, overall chaoticness, and Pinkie-sense. Plus, she had an interesting family. She's Pinkie. What more is there to say. 3. Applejack, too, had family tied into her character, but it was more front and centre. Due to her family bonds, she was connected to many background ponies. Her sister Apple Bloom was written to be sort of the leader of the Cutiemark Crusaders (even if this isn't formally addressed). 4. Fluttershy was written with great depth. There were lots of episodes dedicated to her overcoming her fears and her showing that she could be harsh when she needed to be. Additionally, Fluttershy has an alternative form; Flutterbat. If that wasn't enough, she befriended the Lord of Chaos himself. 5. Rainbow Dash's case is pretty simple. Her sonic rainboom was the reason everyone in the group got their cutie marks. Without her, Equestria would be going through countless disasters. The sonic rainbow, or her rainbow mane itself, has the same colours of the rainbow they use to defeat villains. This doesn’t have to mean anything, but it makes her stand out a little more. 6. Finally, Rarity. I never really picked up anything about her character that really stood out. The main thing is that she's the element of generosity. She's a designer, Spike has a crush on her, and she has a sister named Sweetie Bell. Rarity does have character development and good episodes. She's not boring exactly, but something about her feels hollow.
If I had to take a stab at Rarity being underutilized... Its probably because being "not like other girls" was really popular at the time so Rarity wasnt as popular with kids as it would normally be expected
Yess.. also when i was little i wanted all the equestria girls but none of my local stores had rarity. Even though they did have vinyl scratch. So i bought her and pretended it was rarity 😭
And before Applejack became part of the Mane 6, there was a song called “Applejack” by Dolly Parton, it was from her 1977 album “New Harvest…First Gathering”. Ashleigh Ball did the voice of Applejack to make her sound like Dolly Parton, except another actress named Pam Grier, who starred in a string of Blaxploitation films from the 1970’s including “Foxy Brown”, and she was a black actress with her voice sounds almost close to Applejack. That’s why Applejack’s voice sounds half Dolly Parton, half Pam Grier.
If orange doesn’t sell too well then how has Nickelodeon been surviving all these years with their orange theme not to mention the most popular turtle Michelangelo has been selling more toys then his brothers so I find it hard to believe that orange doesn’t sell well I’m sure appleJack would’ve had some kind of audience I mean look at the non my little pony toys that have natural color fur they sell really well too
I loved this video as a massive aj fan 😆 Even if she isn’t ‘marketable’, AJ’s ‘normalness’ provides such a great storytelling contrast in regard to the cartoon. She’s often the one to pull everyone back down to earth (sometimes literally in rainbow’s case) and acts as a strong support to the rest of the cast. Maybe I’m bias because she’s my fav but without AJ the show would fundamentally be different, like a pillar just wasn’t there. It makes sense with her being in more episodes than even Twilight was. But it is subtle so it might not be obvious to the average viewer. The show is obviously one big ad for the toys so without her it would be really different lol and am not sure it would have worked as well. (I also see her as the “mum friend” in that sense !!) It also sucked - I was the country girl farm kid who loved applejack so much as a child and going to toy stores and not seeing much of her really disappointed me. It’s also ironic because I always went for the orange characters! Anyway I could go on and on about the silly apple horse but I won’t. Great video!!
Hasbro was always ashamed of Applejack. She was invented in times when Cowboy characters were still popular whether its the Simpsons or Fairyodd Parents or Xialoin Showdown. However this trend declined and Southern accent characters were mostly reflecting conservative people which became less popular after Trumps election. Now add the Fedex Shooter who was a brony and Applejack fan on top of this and you have Hasbro pretty much in panic mode. The change of culture didn't just include Applejack either. Zecora and zebras were removed because Hasbro felt afraid of people who said they were stereotypes of Black people, so they made other ponies like Misty more black coded. And I'm personally 99% sure we will also never going to see Rarity again. Her 60's fashion diva personality is already outdated and none other than adults would even get it. Then there's also her femininity and stallion chasing aspect which is also less popular in mainstream media that would chew and spit cartoons like Johnny Bravo or Panty&Stocking if it was released now. Suffice to say i doubt Aj, Zecora and Rarity will return in G6. Fluttershy might appear due to being a normal character archetype and she could also bring back Discord, but if they going to include Misty who is also same shy archetype then Fluttershy might be gone too due to being redundant.
It kinda surprised me because AJ's voice in the latin spanish dub is one of the most iconic things from the show, thus she is really popular in the spanish fanbase. Her character really had a lot of potential as well, I miss her 😞
While she was never my favourite, as a kid I was irritated she was always excluded. I loved collecting the figures and toys which I still have and I refused to settle with just 5 of them. I wanted all. I have a rare mlp AppleJack plush. Now, another thing that irritated me about merch of her...they always forget her hat. And even the official figure I have just lazily comes with an uncolored green hat that doesn't even look like a cowboy hat. I have almost the full set of MLP plushies. The ones where they have the same hair and body structure. I forced my family as a young child to go out of their way to find an Applejack plush with a hat. And sure enough they did. We even braided the mane and tail with red ribbons to make her stand out. I love my collection with all my heart.
Applejack being my favorite mane 6, knowing they basically wanted to replace her made me legit upset lol. I'll always love Applejack for the exact same reasons she was not liked by those in the big chairs.
Hearing Applejack has the color palette closest to human skin tone just makes me think of the Bishoujo MLP FIM figures and how they gave everyone some pretty convincing human skin tones EXCEPT for Applejack who is STILL orange! She looks like an oompa loompa! It sucks because you can see they absolutely can manage a more natural looking tan or darker skin tones with Dash and Luna but for some reason Applejack looks like she goes through a bottle of spray tan a day as opposed to working in the sun. Later, the released exclusive versions of the figures where they are colorful like their equestria girls counterparts and applejack is only barely a little more orange than her "human" skin tone version.
I figured it was a license issue. But interesting idea, if we ignore the marketing, how much screen time does AJ have compared to the rest of the "friendship squad"?
The reason why that Applejack doesn’t appeared anywhere on promotional pieces, because it was considered too woke, or too southern, her voice sounded a lot like Dolly Parton.
There is nothing wrong with AppleJack's design, colour palette, Cutie Mark or concept. It is always refreshing to have two ponies that weren't stereotypically girly like the other FOUR, because that is a load of sexist bs to have them all like that or to be honest most of them and is beyond boring when that is something that you see EVERYWHERE, especially as not every girl is girly and they don't have to be if that's not who they are inside. I always found it so annoying that AppleJack and in some cases Rarity, were and are left out of merchandise because I and I am sure I am not alone in this that I want MORE merch of both of them! 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 The colour palette AJ has works really well with the others as they then are all unique but they still look fantastic together. Going back to her being tomboyish, I am so glad they didn't do that whole bs - "well secretly she wanted to be girly after all" - nonsense and gradually change her - thank goodness for that. 😌😌😌😌😌😌
It's so sad, AJ is literally my favorite pony for the exact reasons you mentioned - she just grounds everything, and I can relate so much to her stubbornness and honesty (especially stubbornness lol), but also her tomboyish nature ❤💔

Hasbro sees through results, through data. Seem she means less sales on average in products that feature her, and selling stuff is what Hasbro does.

@@bowser3017 not often but most foreign made products will still try to follow the trends of the country of origin

It has instilled into us unwavering resilience and dedication to best pony. growing up, and still to this day, applejack has always been my favorite. i'm a southerner, and growing up it was really hard to find characters who were southern who weren't the butt of the joke until i saw applejack. so it was always such a shame it was hard to find toys and other merch of her! i still have my first applejack toy to this day. and wow, i had never seen those emails before... honestly to see a core part of her almost stripped away makes me glad we never got the g4 reboot and got current g5 instead. to see that a character i related to so heavily with be seen as a blemish on the brand... that's a different kind of hurt :(
oh my godi s that agent 8 as ur pfp??
i hadnt realized it until i got older, but yeah, its surprisingly difficult to find southern people in fiction that arent portrayed like theyre stupid. i guess i got so used to it i just didnt notice but wow. most of my childhood movies and show had at least _one_ comic relief redneck and im only realizing now how much that bothers me.
real.
Southerners don't need representation, grow up

I like applejack as a character but for a franchise for kids her weaknesses are pretty obvious
it’s sad because most people I have met especially as a kid who loved the show loved applejack Hasbro just didn’t give her a chance 😔
She's actually the one I'd always forget about up until recently 💀
Also, super cute story, congratulations on the job!! \o/
This shows how problematic gender stereotypes are. They literally try to change Applejack because she wasn't "girly"
@@UwUImTheo that she is, she's probably one of the best examples of a "everyday" person. I'm very fond of her warm personality
This is so cute
That's great!
That’s so cute 😭
that is so cute
What was that about?
funny, because I actually ship twijack due to them both having good leadership qualities above other things :D, but yeah I sadly have to agree, applejack doesn't get much merch which is a huge shame cause she's one of my other favorite ponies
i kinda disagree with some of your points, a major flaw of applejack is that she can be stubborn and set in her own ways no matter how flawed they are, and there are some episodes that touch on that. from the top of my head: the episode where twilight tries to make applejack accept help and she refuses until it burns her out, the episode where applejack is shown to do her farm chores in weird and inconvenient ways to which twi and rarity teach her more effective ones, etc. she also tends to be quite competitive which is touched on with rd a lot
i do agree tho that she had like... less of an "arc" i guess? she remained on the farm, she didn't move on to bigger things like the rest of the m6. but i don't think that necessarily means she isn't developed, and it's nice to have a character who's more grounded and knows their place from the start imo ^^
Applejack is so healing for me. She's so underrated and it wouldn't be the same without her!!!

Hardworking doesn't resonate with kids. Farms don't resonate with (many) kids. Apples don't resonate with kids.
And any kid that don't want to be girly... have Rainbow Dash, the COOL one.
Makes a lot of sense why AJ wasn't marketable.
And I'm sure some designers were put off by her hat too.
Very iconic for her, but extra work. Easier to just make someone else.
i still think of the Friendship is Witchcraft joke of "have an apple" "I'm an American".
she was doomed from the start.
So those are basically non-factors when it comes to why she was excluded from merchandise.

honestly... as tin foil hat-y as it may sound, I think this is sorta part of it, in a roundabout way. Southerners get a bad rap for being "mean," "bigoted," and/or "stupid," and therefore they fear promoting a southern main character is somehow going to be a bad look for the brand. While i don't actually think they're trying to push a political agenda with the technicolor horse show, i do think they're afraid of criticism from people who do have a bad opinion of country people if they do promote AJ... particularly considering she has a LOT of stereotypical country traits outside of just the accent (farmgirl, brutally honest, hardworking, etc.)
Im from the south, and have a very thick accent, and do not look it at all (very "edgy" style, lesbian, young person who uses a cane sometimes.) Very regularly I see people look like they've seen a ghost when i start speaking to them, like they cant comprehend a person like me being country. There's definitely a bad stereotype about it, so i can 100% believe hasbro would try to avoid getting any bad attention due to having a country main character because of it.

Apple Jack is one of the only names Hasbro inherited from the original My Little Pony name. She's the most OG of them all.

While more kids probably aspire to be fashion designers, there are plenty of kids still living and working on their family farms. I think AJ is, as stated, more boring, as she is less likely to take risks and is very level headed.

As someone who grew up in the south, had cowgirls for aunts, literally lived next to a farm & helped feed the cattle; I was not an Applejack fan when I was a kid 😭 I liked her but she wasn't ever my favorite, and I defo think it was bc she was kinda boring compared to the rest of the main 6.
Idk why but the fact they go through such efforts to not make merch of Applejack is kinda funny to me
It makes me so sad to see her pushed to the side so often, I love her so much and I find it so cool how she had been a consistent named character in every single generation, but now she is just forgotten.
(Joke, hehe)
Well, i mean, she's just introvert and shy, this is even in her name.
Nice new editing/animation style, I like it!
AJ doesn't desserve that slander.
Im pretty new to this fandom but im retroactively outraged, how can best pony be sidelined so hard
@@Flummoxyn I can see that being the case
@@Flummoxyn and after "coquette" and "yassification", Rarity is the one getting her renaissance
Yess.. also when i was little i wanted all the equestria girls but none of my local stores had rarity. Even though they did have vinyl scratch. So i bought her and pretended it was rarity 😭
Lol the gays LOVE Rarity
And before Applejack became part of the Mane 6, there was a song called “Applejack” by Dolly Parton, it was from her 1977 album “New Harvest…First Gathering”. Ashleigh Ball did the voice of Applejack to make her sound like Dolly Parton, except another actress named Pam Grier, who starred in a string of Blaxploitation films from the 1970’s including “Foxy Brown”, and she was a black actress with her voice sounds almost close to Applejack. That’s why Applejack’s voice sounds half Dolly Parton, half Pam Grier.
If orange doesn’t sell too well then how has Nickelodeon been surviving all these years with their orange theme not to mention the most popular turtle Michelangelo has been selling more toys then his brothers so I find it hard to believe that orange doesn’t sell well I’m sure appleJack would’ve had some kind of audience I mean look at the non my little pony toys that have natural color fur they sell really well too
Probably because it's not girly enough
@@cosmicjay1463 honestly the idea of what’s considered girly has been changing for so many centuries that it’s almost confusing
@Jinaria101 yes but marketing is more behind in times than we are
I loved this video as a massive aj fan 😆
Even if she isn’t ‘marketable’, AJ’s ‘normalness’ provides such a great storytelling contrast in regard to the cartoon. (I also see her as the “mum friend” in that sense !!)
It also sucked - I was the country girl farm kid who loved applejack so much as a child and going to toy stores and not seeing much of her really disappointed me. It’s also ironic because I always went for the orange characters!
Anyway I could go on and on about the silly apple horse but I won’t. Great video!!
this video's editing is so cool whattt
Applejack and Applebloom will always be my faves
Democrats...
Like Applejack is a part of the main cast yet she's missing from so many toy sets and merch
It kinda surprised me because AJ's voice in the latin spanish dub is one of the most iconic things from the show, thus she is really popular in the spanish fanbase. Her character really had a lot of potential as well, I miss her 😞
The Spanish voice of Applejack means a lot to all Puerto Ricans and New Yorkers who loves Applejack.
Applejack was always my least favorite of the mane 6, but I can't help but feel bad for her and her fans because of this.
This goes from funny to sad very quickly.
Applejack being my favorite mane 6, knowing they basically wanted to replace her made me legit upset lol.
I'll always love Applejack for the exact same reasons she was not liked by those in the big chairs.
you know whats funny about this? the fact that the actual g5 main focus character IS ORANGE
Do you edit your own videos? This thing looks great!
Yup I do! This is the result of basically everything being inside of a 3D space
1:10 - Forget Applejack's screentime. What's going on with Rarity's eye?
You are wise sam

Ironically, Applejack is the only one of the Mane six to have a closer color scheme to McDonalds
And mc donalds sells apple pies
I figured it was a license issue. But interesting idea, if we ignore the marketing, how much screen time does AJ have compared to the rest of the "friendship squad"?
The reason why that Applejack doesn’t appeared anywhere on promotional pieces, because it was considered too woke, or too southern, her voice sounded a lot like Dolly Parton.
@@Musicradio77NetworkI wouldn’t say woke lmao it’s just because she’s not “girly” enough for the brand
@@Musicradio77Network I think you're misusing the word "woke". Regardless I like the apple horse.
@@Musicradio77Network woke?? There's like a zillion people in the south and trust me, they're the opposite of "woke"
as a childhood fan of applejack im kinda happy people are finally starting to realize this
There is nothing wrong with AppleJack's design, colour palette, Cutie Mark or concept.
The colour palette AJ has works really well with the others as they then are all unique but they still look fantastic together.
