A moon is not a year. On earth, a lunar cycle is a little under 28 days. The word month comes from moon. How long is a lunar cycle in Equestia? ...IDK.
I thought that in the beginning of the show they were 18-19 years old and near the end I thought they were in their early 30s and in the very last episode, they were 50
Seems to be that the order is Twilight, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, and then Fluttershy. Applejack is harder to place since she is just working with a family business, but she's probably in the middle. Rarity is definitely older, but not by TOO much.
1:30, I'm sure I'm not the first to say so, but the cakes are her employers, not her guardians. Her parents live on a farm. We've seen them several times
yah, it's possible they also acted like her psuedo guardians since it seems like she left the farm young right after getting her mark. but regardless I think it makes sense for her to still live there, there's just no reason for her to move purely for being older.
I love these headcanons, but age theories with large age differences sort of fall apart when we consider that the Mane 6 all got their cutie marks on the same day 😭 since cutie marks are lowkey symbolism for “coming of age”, I don’t think the Mane 6 could be much more than 5ish years apart from each other if we assume some of them were early & late bloomers? it’s all very confusing tbh
Can’t remember EXACT episode, I believe it was when Flim and Flam opened a school, but starswirl explicitly states “As someone with over 1,000 years of experience…” but that time in limbo passed like nothing for the pillars so he couldn’t be getting experience from that. Wouldn’t that mean starswirl has 1,000 years of experience AT LEAST prior to his time in limbo?
they all got their cutie marks at the same time, so we see them all being young fillies at the same time, so I would argue they are all within a few years of each other.
It varies a LOT. Seriously - There is no "one" definition of what a moon is. It's genuinely just an expression of time to mean "time has passed." I said a moon was around a year because that's what G5's bible said - But then again, a moon is absolutely whatever the writers want in that episode.
@@Cxcd In the context of G5, a moon being a yearish makes sense because ANG claims that Phyllis's business had been protecting Maretime Bay for "over 30 moons" and she seems to have unchallenged political control over the city that has been established for some time. But in G4, a moon being a year would mean the Apple Family Reunion happens once every 100 years… and it happens twice in the show. It really just is whatever the writers want it to be. I'm convinced "moons" is just an expression for a lengthy period of time and doesn't actually have value.
The most objective statistics: Mane 6: 21-25 (youngest Rainbow, oldest Fluttershy) Celestia and Luna: a bit more than 1000 Sunset: more than 25 Starlight: less than 21 Trixie: 21
its a little strange to think of the idea of moons being years, I had always surmised that moons meant stuff like months, cause of the lunar cycle here on earth and all that?! but this whole thing is very intriguing, well done Cxcd! hope all is well for you and also for fellow viewers :D
Going off quite a few comment I'll take a swing at this: Rainbow dash is around 18 years old at the start and 21 in Season 4 Twilight is gonna be around 18/19 at the start (she's young, she's a prodigy as well) Pinkie I'm gonna actually put at 19/20 at the start [Feel like the Cakes concerns were more in line with her personality/maturity than her actual age] Fluttershy I'm going to say is actually around 20/21 (She established she is a year older than PInkie, but I don't think she's as old as you said. I think she may've established herself as an animal caretaker quite young and thus was able to start earlier due to her talents.) Applejack is gonna be similar to you, I'll say shes around 20 (She did say she was the last one in her class to get her cutie mark, and remember when they were all remembering how they got their cutie marks) Rarity is gonna be a touch different. I'll say she's around 19/20 (remember this is a fictional universe where cost of living doesn't matter)
The thing is with Granny Smith, and maybe I'm wrong, but I personally think that Twilight meant that the earth ponies themselves, as a race, have cleaned up winter for hundreds of years and Ponyville's foundation could've been 50ish years ago. But hey, that's just a theory. A PONY THEORY. AAAAAAND CUT!
i like the idea of Rarity being the oldest, like a millenial hanging with a bunch of gen z's. she has these higher comfort standards people usually gain with status and age (like around 30). also my friend group is literally like this with the youngest member being 20 and the oldest 28 and we're a perfectly disfunctional found family of people learning the ways of the ✨magic of friendship ✨ p.s. also the magic of friendship implies the skill and general ability for people from different backgrounds and social circles to become friends so the age gap between the main 6 adds even more to the strength of their friendship
I've always thought they were teenagers or young adults, mostly teenagers since at the end of season 9,it looked like they all got alot older,so I've been guessing they're all around 16 or 17 years old while at the end of season 9 they're around they're early or mid 20's or late 20's
Great video. In “The Perfect Pear”, Bright Mac says that he first met Pear Butter “one hundred and thirty-one thousand, four hundred and fifty-six hour(s)” ago. That is fifteen years and two days. When they first met, they looked like they were about three or four years old, and when he says that, they appear to be young adults, perhaps eighteen to twenty, old enough to marry. Therefore, we know that the ponies age in roughly the same way as humans. It is possible that they live much longer than humans, but I think a better explanation is simply that Twilight didn’t know precisely when Ponyville was founded, and just said “hundreds of years” (not moons) as a general way of saying they always have cleaned up winter without magic. Yes it may be odd for Twilight not to have quickly learned her new hometown’s history, but for me at least, it’s a better explanation of a one-off line than changing everything we know about how ponies age.
On an episode Pinkie pie said she was born on a tuesday, and the Hub/ Discovery Family confirmed her birthday is on May 3th, which means she was born in 1994 and was 16 years old on the first episode. Also in one episode Fluttershy said she is a year older than Pinkie pie, Fluttershy could be the same age (early bloomer) or also a year older than Rainbow Dash because both went to summer flight camp together, usually on summer camp they are put on groups. For example, Group A age 6-8 yrs old, Group B 9-11 yrs old, also it could be by academic level if Fluttershy fail a class or need extra practice to be at the same level as her peers maybe she was put on a class with younger students.
For the cake thing for rainbow dash, I wouldn’t count the edge candles of the cake because rounded shape and all that. So, counting up and taking that into account, she’d more so be about 31. Which lines up way better than 42
I really like the idea of Twilight being 18-19 for the reasons explained in the video, I’d never thought of it like that and the interpretation is great. Same with Pinkie. I think Rarity being 30/the oldest/way older is actually a popular headcanon people have. However even though it’s a kids show and in a few countries cider had to be censored to apple juice (or something along those lines iirc) because of the alcoholic implications - seeing as FiM is both a US and Canadian produced show, it’s hard to tell if the M6 would have to be over 18 or 21 to each purchase the apple cider legally. I wouldn’t know about specific ages but I think Rarity is oldest with Fluttershy quickly following. Then RD close behind, AJ either slotted next to Rarity because a lot of people headcanon they went to school together having both grown up in Ponyville around the same time, or next to RD due to their competitive natures reducing them to a similar maturity level. Then Twilight and then Pinkie, possibly, though I could also just see Pinkie being a naturally sporadic/eccentric/mature 20-something and not being the youngest at all.
So personally the way I nailed down the main 6's ages was thinking about equestria girls because they are in a high school. I originally thought younger but my mind was changed about the prom related events (and I think they drive cars and shit lol,) so my theory ended up rounding ages in senior year students making the main six as independent as they are while making them young enough to still have their parents and such, but old enough to do things but that was just my theory mainly.
I may be wrong but I never took Pinkie living with the Cakes as living with her guardians...I viewed it as then letting her live there because she also works at Sugar Cube Corner
year* she is hundreds of years old. Twi used years whil talking about when Ponnyville started celebrating "Winter wrap up". Tho it could be a mistranslation mabe? Also: Moons are monts... ever heard of lunar cycle? Also moon cycle is the same as the one of earth as portal is synchronized with it on both sides
Damn 3 hours ago anyways I really like your head canons and reasoning and honestly I considered Rarity like the 2nd oldest because of her grey hair but personally I think Fluttershy is the oldest. Not only because of her job and like the reasoning in this video but in the episode where we get to see how each of the mane 6 earn their cutie marks, we know that they got their cutie marks at the exact same time and everyone’s ig “build” when they were younger were like kids like Apple bloom. Everyone except Fluttershy, she was more tall, skinny and yeah that could be seen as just her body type since most people head canon her to have that lanky type of body ( including me ) BUT we have something that proves that might be more of an age-related thing than a body type thing because of the episode “Where the Apple lies” we see Applejack with a similar almost identical build to Fluttershy when she got her cutie mark. Applejack had more of that tall and skinny body type after she got her cutie mark since she had it in the “flashback” ( hopefully that made sense ) but yeah that’s just a random theory I’m surprised no one else thought of and a personal head canon if you read ‘till her thanks lol I’d love to hear other opinions on this too
The problem with the RD cake is that its a circular cake and we only see one side of it. Now excluding the top layer we have to assume the other side has just as many candles which by your logic would make her 41 which I severely doubt. Now I agree that pony's live longer lives then humans but not by huge gaps. IMO the pony mane 6 are early 20's which is enough to be on there own but still have younger siblings that still attend school. Now in comparison the human mane 6 are clearly late teens 16-17 IMO so pony's probably live roughly 20% longer than humans. Now yeah the whole "moon" time measurement is a bit tricky but honestly I think it does refer to each new moon or roughly one month as that seems to be the most consistent. In season 3 AJ states the Apples have a reunion every 100 moons which would be just under 10 years which is decent time for big family reunions, then in the last episode Twilight suggests they meet once every moon or roughly once a month which again is a decent time to meet up.
i respect ur headcanons, i made some of my own before watching this video to see if we'd have the same ones lol oldest to youngest: - fluttershy - pinkie pie - aj and rarity are the same age - twilight - RD i don't have specfic ages for them, but i imagine they are all between 20 - 25. if this gets a few likes ill explain my loose reasons for this :3
A moon is a month, obviously. The word "month" is just an old world meaning, guess what, Moon. If we want to get pedantic about it it's probably a full moon cycle, which on earth is approximately 29.5 days. What we really need to know is how many moons are in a year, or in each season. It seems like that Equestria has a longer spring and summer time compared to Earth, as there's much fewer episodes that take place in autumn and winter.
None of the Main Six can be more than 2 or 3 years older or younger than any of the others. They all received their cutie marks at exactly the same time when they were all fillies. As for Granny Smith, there might be an in-universe explanation that's never been revealed for her having an unusually long life. I'd argue that a moon has to be closer to a month than a year (at least in Friendship is Magic; I'm ignoring the TYT series bible for now). Otherwise, Sunset would have to be decades older than Twilight.
i think fluttershy is the oldest (still love ur head canons and stuff tho as they make sense still) because when you see fluttershy and the main 6 as fouls fluttershy is a lot taller and stuff. but I definitely see twilight being around 19 as well because of the college stuff and everything! 😁
Rarity was in the same class as Cheerilee so i'd say she's actually older than 30 all considering. So, call of the cutie right? The picture of Cheerilee shows her in 80s style clothing in her teens i'd say early teens maybe 15. Obviously this isn't earth but we can say that this is probably the writers hinting at her age. That would make her age relative to 2011 about 46 we could say rarity skipped a few grades and it was late 80s but still she's probably at least mid to late 30s.
Wait Twilight being the youngest is controversial? I always assumed she was the youngest I mean in the beginning of the series she's in some kind of college like setting while everyone else is already living lives I always thought she was 18
Hold up he said Kaleigh is 19 which makes sense that he was talking about flush I probably being on the youngest and all the reason why she could be on the youngest fossil is the best you can be on the oldest, but then goes right into what he feels about pinkie pie that actually stating how old he actually thinks, for Shiesty forgot to actually say the age he thinks Fluttershy is so technically he didn’t give us what he thought her age was, unless he goes back and actually says her age later on, but I don’t know
pinky pie could also be on the spectrum witch can also explain the lives with gardens and only really baking as she's good with it and is her favorite hobby aka job i thoght of this bc my frend is an adult who lives with there mum and has a job but thats bc hes autistic and has had a suport system that helped him get to where he is today henc my thought on pinky liveing with them
Moons refers to months, not years. Months were based on the lunar cycle. One cycle is about 28 days or about 1 month. 100 moons is about 100 months or 8 years and 4 months. A year is about 12 months as there are usually about 12 complete moon cycles in a year and there are 12 months in a year.
I have my own reasoning for all of these, but I'll just put them in a list: Twilight - 18 (turns 19 in season 1) Pinkie - 20 Rainbow - 21 Applejack -21 Rarity - 22 Fluttershy - 23
So by the time she banished her sister, she already had 111 years under her belt!?! Geez no wonder luna got a power itch 😅 and did luna age while she was gone??? Or is it like being locked in stone or in limbo, it just freezes?

(Basically, they were adults when they got them.) I would guess they're (at least) 1,130 years old. It also says that Star Swirl had brown hair when he first met the princesses.
We've seen them several times
yah, it's possible they also acted like her psuedo guardians since it seems like she left the farm young right after getting her mark. but regardless I think it makes sense for her to still live there, there's just no reason for her to move purely for being older.
unrelated to the video i genuinely thought the main six were called the "mane six" im so dumb brah
they are, it's another fandom horse pun. both are correct, mane six is just the cheeky pun version
Imo with Granny Smith it was probably just an oversight
Clearly Rarity is 38
Because she is already balding, source trust me
I love these headcanons, but age theories with large age differences sort of fall apart when we consider that the Mane 6 all got their cutie marks on the same day 😭 since cutie marks are lowkey symbolism for “coming of age”, I don’t think the Mane 6 could be much more than 5ish years apart from each other if we assume some of them were early & late bloomers? it’s all very confusing tbh
Can’t remember EXACT episode, I believe it was when Flim and Flam opened a school, but starswirl explicitly states “As someone with over 1,000 years of experience…” but that time in limbo passed like nothing for the pillars so he couldn’t be getting experience from that.
Wouldn’t that mean starswirl has 1,000 years of experience AT LEAST prior to his time in limbo?
they all got their cutie marks at the same time, so we see them all being young fillies at the same time, so I would argue they are all within a few years of each other.
i thought moons was months oops?
A moon is whatever the writers want it to be for the sake of the plot.
It varies a LOT. Seriously - There is no "one" definition of what a moon is. It's genuinely just an expression of time to mean "time has passed." I said a moon was around a year because that's what G5's bible said - But then again, a moon is absolutely whatever the writers want in that episode.
it is
@@Cxcd In the context of G5, a moon being a yearish makes sense because ANG claims that Phyllis's business had been protecting Maretime Bay for "over 30 moons" and she seems to have unchallenged political control over the city that has been established for some time. But in G4, a moon being a year would mean the Apple Family Reunion happens once every 100 years… and it happens twice in the show. It really just is whatever the writers want it to be. I'm convinced "moons" is just an expression for a lengthy period of time and doesn't actually have value.
I thought that because of warrior cats lol
The most objective statistics:
Mane 6: 21-25 (youngest Rainbow, oldest Fluttershy)
Celestia and Luna: a bit more than 1000
Sunset: more than 25
Starlight: less than 21
Trixie: 21
0:02 Da Cat!! 🐈❤❤😊
11:53 ITS A TORTOISE
“Its a f**ck¡ng turtle”
its a little strange to think of the idea of moons being years, I had always surmised that moons meant stuff like months, cause of the lunar cycle here on earth and all that?! but this whole thing is very intriguing, well done Cxcd! hope all is well for you and also for fellow viewers :D
Going off quite a few comment I'll take a swing at this:
Rainbow dash is around 18 years old at the start and 21 in Season 4
Twilight is gonna be around 18/19 at the start (she's young, she's a prodigy as well)
Pinkie I'm gonna actually put at 19/20 at the start [Feel like the Cakes concerns were more in line with her personality/maturity than her actual age]
Fluttershy I'm going to say is actually around 20/21 (She established she is a year older than PInkie, but I don't think she's as old as you said. I think she may've established herself as an animal caretaker quite young and thus was able to start earlier due to her talents.)
Applejack is gonna be similar to you, I'll say shes around 20 (She did say she was the last one in her class to get her cutie mark, and remember when they were all remembering how they got their cutie marks)
Rarity is gonna be a touch different. I'll say she's around 19/20 (remember this is a fictional universe where cost of living doesn't matter)
The age of the Mane 6 is equivalent to that of the Equestria Girls, which are 17-18 years old.
based on what source?
The thing is with Granny Smith, and maybe I'm wrong, but I personally think that Twilight meant that the earth ponies themselves, as a race, have cleaned up winter for hundreds of years and Ponyville's foundation could've been 50ish years ago. But hey, that's just a theory. A PONY THEORY. AAAAAAND CUT!
i like the idea of Rarity being the oldest, like a millenial hanging with a bunch of gen z's. she has these higher comfort standards people usually gain with status and age (like around 30). also my friend group is literally like this with the youngest member being 20 and the oldest 28 and we're a perfectly disfunctional found family of people learning the ways of the ✨magic of friendship ✨
p.s. also the magic of friendship implies the skill and general ability for people from different backgrounds and social circles to become friends so the age gap between the main 6 adds even more to the strength of their friendship
Wasn't granny Smith running the farm most of the time😎
For the cake thing for rainbow dash, I wouldn’t count the edge candles of the cake because rounded shape and all that.
Also:
Moons are monts... ever heard of lunar cycle?
Might not be canon in the series, but a moon tends to mean about a month bc there’s one full moon every month :P
i respect ur headcanons, i made some of my own before watching this video to see if we'd have the same ones lol
oldest to youngest:
- fluttershy
- pinkie pie
- aj and rarity are the same age
- twilight
- RD
i don't have specfic ages for them, but i imagine they are all between 20 - 25. if this gets a few likes ill explain my loose reasons for this :3
Those are actually good theories.
That's a big age gap between rarity and sweetie bell. Im about a year older than my sister
i think fluttershy is the oldest (still love ur head canons and stuff tho as they make sense still) because when you see fluttershy and the main 6 as fouls fluttershy is a lot taller and stuff. but I definitely see twilight being around 19 as well because of the college stuff and everything!
I always assumed she was the youngest I mean in the beginning of the series she's in some kind of college like setting while everyone else is already living lives I always thought she was 18
At least somewhere between 18 and 22
Hold up he said Kaleigh is 19 which makes sense that he was talking about flush I probably being on the youngest and all the reason why she could be on the youngest fossil is the best you can be on the oldest, but then goes right into what he feels about pinkie pie that actually stating how old he actually thinks, for Shiesty forgot to actually say the age he thinks Fluttershy is so technically he didn’t give us what he thought her age was, unless he goes back and actually says her age later on, but I don’t know
They were prob 18-20 at the first few seasons and then 30s as of now
🤓☝ errrrm actually they are called the mane six not main six.
Anyway, the video was cool, even though my headcanon puts them all in the early 20s.
pinky pie could also be on the spectrum witch can also explain the lives with gardens and only really baking as she's good with it and is her favorite hobby aka job
i thoght of this bc my frend is an adult who lives with there mum and has a job but thats bc hes autistic and has had a suport system that helped him get to where he is today
henc my thought on pinky liveing with them
One moon is one month! I full moon cycle is a month!
Moons refers to months, not years. Months were based on the lunar cycle. One cycle is about 28 days or about 1 month. 100 moons is about 100 months or 8 years and 4 months. A year is about 12 months as there are usually about 12 complete moon cycles in a year and there are 12 months in a year.
time to raise eyebrows at people that simp for pinkie and flutters (joking ofc, the ages are headcanons)
I have my own reasoning for all of these, but I'll just put them in a list:
Twilight - 18 (turns 19 in season 1)
Pinkie - 20
Rainbow - 21
Applejack -21
Rarity - 22
Fluttershy - 23
Didn't starswirl know a time spell
4:00 200 moons is only like 16 years
So by the time she banished her sister, she already had 111 years under her belt!?! Geez no wonder luna got a power itch 😅 and did luna age while she was gone??? Or is it like being locked in stone or in limbo, it just freezes?
Isn't a moon just around a month?
Wait, didn’t sweetie belle have a fifth birthday party?!
I think applejack is in her 70s
This is my opinion but I want rarity to be in her 20s because I think it would be better writing
11:03 he gets to the point here
(For the low attention span homies)
😍
Ok I think moons mean months bc each month where is always a full moon so each moon is each month so 100 moons is would be abt 8 years
im guessing
18 twi
18 pikie
19 fluttershy
21 rainbow
22 aj
25 rarity
Cozy Glow and the CMC are all 12
moons generally means months
Moons is months
