however unintentional, her having a crown for her element of harmony feels like such foreshadowing. it's crazy how people were shocked or acted like it didn't fit when the show already treated her differently than the other 5 from the very start
The original creator of the show, so the one who gave her that crown (Lauren Faust) literally never wanted Twilight to become a princess as there were supposed to be only 2 alicorns in her version of the story (celestia and luna). Personally I like to think that only Twilight got the crown because her element was the only one that Nightmare Moon hadn't shattered or/and it was the hidden one. Moreover during the time the show was being made Lauren made it obvious multiple times that she doesnt like Twilight as an alicorn (e.g. her tweets, the funko pop situation)
honestly, even as a kid I felt like twilight becoming an alicorn was badass and something inevitable and made sense, scince she was the main character after all
When I was a kid, I was really excited for Twilight when she became an alicorn, but I remember being sad that there wasn't an equal number of each pony type in the mane six anymore. Goes to show where my priorities were
As someone who is the actual target demographic, I was absolutely ecstatic when twilight got her wings. I felt so proud of her, and I felt like all her hard work finally came through.
I always loved how Bronies feared Twilight would lose all conflict after she became a princess but that one male pony wouldn't even let her cut ahead for a Manehatten taxi in Rarity takes Manehatten. That guy must have been a revolutionary anti-royalist in Equestria
Manehattan seemed fairly developed compared to the rest of Equestria, I imagine if there was anywhere that was antimonarchy it would be there, probably one step away from breaking off of Equestria and becoming its own state
Everybody was afraid she could use her new found power to fix any problem. As princess, her word is law. As an alicorn, she has infinite magic. With wings, nothing can hold her down. Equestria Girls and seasons 4 and 5 successfully jumped the shark. Twilight suffered from imposter syndrome and was trying to sort out what ponies expect from a princess when she doesn't need to act any differently than before. Even with her talent being magic itself and the boost from being an alicorn, there are still unicorns out there that can perform stronger spells with less effort than Twilight. Then to round off the main cast, we got Starlight and her issues to give fans a fresh perspective.
I was late to MLP Gen 4...REALLY late. Like you, I just wasn't around during the controversy. But when I finally watched the show, I was floored by how much I related to Twilight as a character in the first few seasons. The books, the academics, the anxiety, the perfectionism, her initial closed-off nature, even some of the snark...it was all painfully familiar, at least in my teenage years. When she became an alicorn, it didn't make me upset or make her seem less relatable, especially when I saw she was still the same anxious pony trying her best under those new wings. It actually made me feel like, "Wow, if she can get there, maybe the mess of a person that is me can go places, too." And that's not something I'd ever want to take away from any children watching this show. Granted, unlike fans at the time, I had the privilege of watching the next season immediately. And the battle with Tirek next season was pretty sweet. 😏
Personally, I think people were overreacting. A character can't stay the same forever. Especially considering Twilight is treated like THE main character of the show in a way compared to the rest of the Mane Six.
@@baffledbrandon3132 She kinda was. Even before the alicorn thing, I'm pretty sure a majority of the show's main plot was centering around her life (granted, it also did so with the other Mane Six, but still). Not helping that she's pretty much the reason they were able to become friends too.
@@oranjaglad8648 The show's plot was only centered around her because the writers had to convolute some way of shoehorning her into the episode's story. And if the pilot episode and "Celestial Advice" are to be believed, these characters were already good friends long before Twilight came into their lives.
@@baffledbrandon3132 Even still, Twilight made them bond with each other even more (especially since Celestia basically tasked her with finding and forming genuine friendships).
@@baffledbrandon3132 bruh they r freinds or no just watch the show or the music start who is the one singing twilight saying “i was wondering what freinship could be” It always was obvious she was THE main Ngl when i was watching mlp as a kid i thought it was her before knowing that all the 6 were mains with that said she is my least fav character
twi being an alicorn def fits her and it's so strange seeing her as a unicorn now lol. also it makes rarity the only unicorn of the mane 6, making her an actual rarity 🤍
I honestly didn’t mind the change but only because I expected the rest of the mane 6 to turn into alicorns too, as they were literally the reason and source of why Twilight became a princess in the first place, I just thought it’d be unfair if they didn’t. And I honestly still stand by that? Especially because of The Last Problem where the rest got old and Twilight was just there, pretty and immortal, implying that the rest of the mane 6 died despite doing as much for Equestria as Twilight. They did them dirty and I still hold a bit of a grudge. Like CMON HASBRO THE ONE TIME YOU COULDVE REALLY MADE MONEY AND YOU DIDNT DO IT?? YOU KNOW HOW MUCH PRINCESS APPLEJACK MERCH ID BUY?? ALL OF ITTTTTT
Tbh I didn't mind the unfairness of it, since the show kind of dealt with Twilight having to come to terms with suddenly becoming a princess against her own will and having to take on more responsibility, but despite all of it, even in The Last Problem, they're still friends, even when she's now the ruler of Equestria and their lives are so different. It isn't fair, but Twilight didn't have a choice, she just had to accept what was thrusted onto her and keep going. Plus with the foreshadowing of her having a crown instead of an amulet for her Element of Harmony, I don't know if the other Mane 6 becoming alicorns would have made as much sense. I agree with the merch point though lol
@@leoleonvids I definitely see your point, i guess i didn’t necessarily want the others to become Princesses of their own kingdoms, just alicorns, and sort of like formal protectors of Equestria, with Twilight as the leader and the ruler. Cause for example I can’t imagine Applejack leaving her farm to live in a castle or smth. But for sure, Twilight was kinda thrown into the whole princess thing, at times it felt like Celestia was just sick of her job and wanted to get it over with lmao
Age spells are canon, and I refuse to believe Twilight didn't use them on the M6, maybe they were toward the end of once 'cycle' in the last episode. G5 may screw that up though...
To me the real confusion is why Season 3 went on so quickly. The CMC didn't even get their cutie marks. And frankly I feel like if they really wanted to make Twilight a princess shouldnt it have been some more epic fight with epic villian not a random spell mix up?
i think that was the point of the song “you’ll play your part” because like she was a princess but she wasn’t…important yet if that makes sense? cause in that 2 parter she fought with and destroyed terek and finally got her title and purpose i don’t know i personally liked how they did it, and let her live as a princess/alicorn for a while before they gave her a proper “role” in equestria but i agree, season 3 was super quick
Yeah, because that's totally why people fell in love with this snow: epic fights with epic villains. It wasn't anything sensible like the great characters or the decent writing or anything like that.
@@-.Abstract.- I hated how the writers went about that. It's as if they said, "Fuck it," and decided to just go ahead and give them their cutie marks for no reason. They didn't do anything to earn them.
Oh I remember this... I was 15 when it all happened. I was an akward teen fully invested in the brony fandom and followed through all of their drama. This was definitely an interesting time! There was so much that contributed to that fear, and a lot of MLP history has been lost to time with many of the people who watched the show as kids having context completely removed from certain things and thus can't understand the older content. I don't think I can fully describe it all. But I do remember crying because of how proud I was of Twilight. I embraced the change, but it was scary. We had no idea what was in store for the future and this truly seemed like the end.
I remember seeing this and I was upset. Not at her becoming a alicorn princess, but because I thought it was so unfair that she became a alicorn and the rest didn’t. I thought it was so unfair because she would never would have gotten to that point without her friends. I started liking it overtime, but I still wish the rest became alicorn to tbh (though I still wish they gave more time for twilight to become a alicorn and her ending as a pallet swap of Celestia..)
Magical mystery cure was literally the very first mlp episode I watched on TV, imagine how big of a spoiler that became for me but I neither realise nor remember it until I watched the series in order.
Ah yes one of the many incidents that threw the entire fandom into a riot... I still don't get why people got so mad about the change, but I guess they were likely uncertain about what would happen next in the show so I guess it is understandable. Anyways, continue the great work Toby, you do a fantastic job!
Spike and his wings too tbh. (More so if anything. Even pre-G4, I thought G1 and G3 Spike looked super weird being wingless dragons, when all other dragons had wings.)
I thought her unicorn design was pretty nice, but yeah her alicorn design was fitting and looks great. Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to make of it at first. But she was an alicorn for so long, you sometimes forget that she didn’t have wings at first.
twilight becomes alicorn: the fandom: *complete fan rage, discussing how it will change the show forever, nothing will be the same, people deciding to stop watching the show* sunny becomes alicorn: the fandom: s u r e.
Lol, I believe the fandom didn't really care too much about Sunny being alicorn because she turned into one in the very same movie she was introduced in. So nobody was really attached to her just being an earth pony.
@@TobbyMLP Plus, it fits thematically. She had been the driving force for years before her friends had come along, and was the driving force during the quest. Uniting the three tribes, becoming a pony who is all three tribes.
Sunny becoming an alicorn is even worse than twilight. Twilight at least went through 3 seasons while sunny did absolutely nothing. And twilight already had a horn, so she only got wings, while sunny got both at once?? Pathetic. I rather think that the bronies are just so tired from the rage of twilight’s alicorn form, that we don’t have any energy left to rage over sunny anymore. Besides, g5 also isn’t as popular as g4.
When I first heard about Twilight becoming an alicorn (I was only 9 when the episode first aired), I was honestly really happy for her. I liked the idea of Twilight getting wings and becoming an alicorn. I'm just so used to seeing Twilight with wings, that it's kinda hard for me to imagine her without them. I didn't think anyone would actually hate on Twilicorn. Hell, I didn't even know there was a controversy surrounding Twilight getting wings and becoming a princess back then. Thinking about it now, I still like Twilicorn, but I feel like she became an alicorn too soon. She only spent the first 2 seasons and most of season 3 as a unicorn and the rest as an alicorn. They could've just waited until something special happened, like the mlp movie or the series finale. When I asked my little sister (who just started getting into mlp) on her thoughts about Twilight becoming an alicorn, she said didn't really like it. My sister also asked me why the other mane 6 ponies couldn't be alicorns, too, just like Twilight, and I was like "It's probably because 1. Twilight is Celestia's student and 2. She's like, the star of the show lol." Funny enough, ever since Twilight became an alicorn, I expected the other mane 6 ponies to become alicorns too, but that sadly never happened. My sister doesn't really like Twilight very much. Twilight's her least favorite mane 6 pony because according to my sister, she's "too bossy" lol.
i honestly prefer that it happened earlier because i actually like twilight better as an alicorn and i like that we got to spend so much time with her as an alicorn. she became so much more powerful and i feel like if it had just happened at the end of the series we wouldn’t have been able to see any of that
I was in a phase that I like MLP for the design than the art philosophy of MLP. Lauren Faust was against the idea that Cadance and Twilight Sparkle being Alicorn because this is against the rarity aspect as Celestia and Luna are mean to be the only unicorn. The others issue is that MLP was mean to end on Season 3, thus why Twilight become an Alicorn, but with the success (and Hasbro's business model), they keep going untile season 9. Diving into quantity over quality. Six seasons with her an Alicorn! For me, I prefers Twilight as an Unicorn, it makes her more grounded and have her face many adversity. Being an Alicorn, it's like she bypasses most of them instead of going through. Also, why would Twilight become an Alicorn? She doesn't need to be one, she has virtue that bring the mane 6 together. 8:22 Bru, they took Twilight vector and added wings! One is attached to her plot!
I've been in the fandom since October 2011, so I was around to witness the entire controversy firsthand, including the first few images that were leaked. I just never really cared all that much about the whole thing, despite Twilight being my favorite pony. That's because I was sure that - just as Tara Strong had said - her actual character wouldn't change all that much. However, I did think Magical Mystery Cure was somewhat rushed and they could have found a better justification for her to actually turn into an alicorn. My opinion on that hasn't changed even after 10 years, though I've mellowed out a bit on the episode, for sure. In the end, I agree that the show can clearly be separated into a pre-Twilicorn and post-Twilicorn era, but that doesn't mean that I didn't still enjoy many of the later seasons. I have to admit that Twilight did lose a bit of her edge over time, but she still stayed recognizably "Twilight" throughout, which is why she's still my favorite character to this day. Wings or not - Twilight is Twilight.
Why were people so surprised that the protagonist of noble background, whose element of harmony is an ornate princess crown, who studies directly under the queen, whose cutie mark represents one of the most important aspects of her world, and whose organization and leadership skills are greatly emphasized very often, became a magical pony princess. Like, I know it wasn't _actually_ planned from the beginning, but it REALLY looks the part, which is why it just felt like such a natural next step for the show.
"Girls like stories with real conflict; girls are smart enough to understand complex plots; girls aren't as easily frightened as everyone seems to think. Girls are complex human beings, and they can be brave, strong, kind and independent-but they can also be uncertain, awkward, silly, arrogant, or stubborn. They shouldn't have to succumb to pressure to be perfect." - Lauren Faust, 2010 “We’re building a very unique mythology around being a princess. Every little girl wants to be a princess, and not everybody can get to be a princess - but you can live up to the ideals that should come along with being a princess.” - Megan McCarthy, 2013 That about sums it up.
I never had those memories. Thanks for taking me back to that time. I agree with what Tara Strong said in the interview, Twilight is still the Twilight. What makes her unique and lovable is still there.
I would've liked you to mention the episode "fame and misfortune" where they parody this controvy. I really don't imagine how would've been continued MLP without Twilight being an Alicorn and a princess.
Fame and Misfortune in of itself is its whole separate can of worms that could probably take up an entire video by itself lol, so I decided it wasn't relevant enough to mention here.
As someone who was the actual demographic for the show at that time (I was 11 years old) I remember absolutely *dreading* the wholw alicorn Twilight concept. It just didn't sit right with me, specially due to my mixed feelings about Twilight at that time. I found it unfair that only she got promoted to a higher position when she couldn't have gotten there if it wasn't for her friends. All that said, ten years later and I cannot imagine Twilight without her wings now. I just got used to it as it became the normal. I think it was a proper creative choice that pushed the narrative forward, and if all mane 6 were turned into alicorns it would just be too much. Just wished they would handle the alicorn thing a bit better in the new generation.
I never understood the uproar and thought it was ridiculous honestly. Since episode 1 it was very clear that twilight was destined for something and being prepared for it. (Her element of harmony was even a crown. Like how much more obvious could it have been???) This was the logical next step to take with her character. I'm fine with the arguments about it not being handled great in execution, and worries about her personality changing. But it's not an unnatural direction for her character to have gone in over all.
As a little 6 year old, I had mixed feelings about Twilight having wings. I thought it was cool she had wings, but at the same time I was mad, I don’t know 😂 but what I do know is that I was especially made when she became the full on princess of the whole equestria in season 9…
As someone was a little girl when this came out i honestly was sad that only twilight became an alicorn and not the rest. Felt like it would be better id they were all rewarded not just her.
I remember an explosion of sad art showing twilight out living her friends. One of the writers said she wouldn't out live them but no one really bought that at the time. I guess they followed through on that with g5...
I remember being a 16 year old really invested in the fandom being absolutely sickened by the idea of her becoming an alicorn. I got over it quick because I never cared for twilight all that much to begin with but it was a fun time to be around.
@@TobbyMLP And sadly this wasn't the last instance of bronies destroying the show because of a new status quo challenging concept. I will say this. As long as these obvious toy plugs work within the context of the show, it's fine. What I like about MLP, is how self aware it was, but not in a way that felt asshole...ish. The show knew people would be skeptical, so the show would basically be saying "Look we know change can be difficult to come to terms with. But we can assure you, we still got it.". As apposed to saying "Oh boo boo! Don't like change?! Let me play a sad song for ye on the world's smallest violin!!".
I was SO happy when twilight got her wings when I first watched it. And, I still am! Although, in retrospective, I feels she got them to early sometimes…not necessarily that Magical Mystery cure was a bad episode for her to become a princess. But that, logistically speaking, out of the 9 seasons. She was only a unicorn for 2 and a half seasons, essentially. Meaning, out of the 221 mlp episodes there are, she was only a unicorn, for the first 65. I don’t know…maybe it does make sense…? But it usually felt. A little too soon for me.
I was a part of the target demographic at the time, and I remember watching the episode and having mixed emotions. Like everyone else, I felt like the other 5 ponies should have gotten some sort of upgrade too, considering they were also learning about friendship and were writing to Princess Celestia like Twilight, and helped her get to where she was by the end of S3. Though I did go back and watch episodes like The Crystal Empire, and the Friendship is Magic two-parter, and noticed that Twilight becoming a princess was something foreshadowed since the beginning of the series. Still, I have mixed feelings with it overall because it definitely seems like Twilight got all of the "credit" with her princess transformation, while her friends got nothing.
Back in 2013 I think people disliked the idea of traditional Disney princesses. They saw them as outdated ideals of feminity especially for a show with more modern values like MLP. But I think people these days appreciate the idea of princesses as empowering especially compared to how modern female role models can be alienating.
*I honestly felt like she deserved to be an Alicorn but waaayyyy later in the seasons, because the spell she casted made it seem like the rest of the main 6 should have became alicorns as well. LMAO*
I still think it's interesting how much MLP steered away from Lauren Faust's initial vision. A while ago, she stated that she never intended on more alicorns existing other than Celestia and Luna, so many characters like Cadence or Queen Chrysalis would have never existed. Sometimes I wish we could've seen the show if it were to be only run by Lauren, but I also know it probably wouldn't have continued after 3 seasons if it had
Yeah I think it is pretty interesting. I think in the long run though Lauren Faust leaving was sort of beneficial for the show. It seemed like she wanted to keep the show as more slice of life, while the other writers were more motivated to change things up more often.
In fact all the alicornation happened because Celestia wanted to have a heir, as she was probably sick and tired of ruling over Equestria for thousands year. And I think there were much more candidates over these years long before Sunset and Twilight were even born, but they were swopped away for some reasons (like Sunset was for her own selfishness and impatience). But there is thing - why Celestia didn't give birth a heir she needed by herself? Or she tried... but failed - meaning Celestia is infertile? Not sure if it because of her age, being an alicorn (as Cadence, in opposite, had successfully given birth to Flurry) or it is just Celestia is unlucky, but I guess this is reason. There is also Luna, of course, but she had been banished on the Moon for thousand years and by the time she was freed Celestia already had picked Twilight as potential heir.
Maybe Celestia didn't want to make it into a "royal blood" thing where in the future only descendants with the Celestia blood can rule. By choosing Twilight, and mentoring her, it doesn't restrict the future of Equestria to only Celestia's bloodline while also ensuring her ideals are taught and there is a right fit. I mean, what if Celestia's child didn't want to rule? I'm sure she also wouldn't want to force them to. She cares more about the future of Equestria than making her bloodline be the ones in charge, I think. So it was more important to her to have a good fit to rule rather than it be a blood heir.
I remember this happening back in 2013 but I wouldn’t say it was the “biggest” controversy at the time. Let’s not forget Derpygate was happening at the time too; she had completely disappeared from all the episodes of season 3 except for the small cameo she had at the end of episode 13 and she wouldn’t be back until mid season 4 when Hasbro decided it was ok to include her.
I call it the 'biggest' because this actually had an impact on the show itself. Derpygate was big too, but in reality the impact it had on the actual show was minimal.
@@TobbyMLP I understand. I totally see what you mean, both incidents were pretty big in the fandom at the time but alicorn Twilight was crazy!! I think it got so big even Hasbro didn’t know what to do with her which is why the series went in the direction it did after season 4.
Off topic but i would love to see G1 get more respect considering it's extremely similar to G4. I also would love to see the Williams siblings get more respect considering they are extremely important to G1 (and all three are pretty cute.). Plus Danny Williams seems to be the same age as the CMC and has a lot in common with Scootaloo but is still his own character, plus he's just fun. Molly is adorable and does great with the baby's ponies, Megan holds a powerful artifact. And all three are great friends and have saved poniws multiple times.
@@user-uo8ny1kj4c I mean it's the normal 80s style and like a lot of 80s shows it does have adorable characters (like the Williams siblings and some of the ponies). Plus it's close enough to G4 to where they can crossover without looking off putting.
@@user-uo8ny1kj4c that doesn't really make sense because only one show has your favorite characters. Besides a lot of G4 characters are based on G1 characters anyways.
@@lunakingsley.7247 Yeah I know. But it just wouldn't feel the same. Plus, lauren faust's work on the g4 show made it feel like the other shows I used to watch when I was little. Fosters home for imaginary friends, powerpuff girls, esc.
as someone who was part of the actual target demographic (i was 11 when the change happened) it did make me upset because to me it felt like there was no 'harmony' in the elements of harmony anymore. That, plus the fact that i identified with twilight so much because she was an introverted bookworm like me made me take the change a little more harshly, idk how to explain it really, but it felt like betrayal? like i lost someone i trusted
I remember this happening at the height of the fandom, I actually left it due to it no longer being the story originally intended for Twilight. It really did divide the fandom, being in school back in those days as a brony was certainly an experience
While I don't dislike the idea of Twilight being an alicorn, I do feel like it messed up the balance between the main six. Like before you had: 2 earth ponies, 2 unicorns, and 2 pegasus. Now you have 2 earth ponies, 1 unicorn, 2 pegasus, and 1 alicorn. It was more even before.
when i first learned Twilight became an alicorn i never got to watch the official episode but *did* see the redbull parody so for many many years i was convinced she actually drank redbull and it gave her wings
I was a young fan when it happened and i remember vividly watching the episode she got her wings. I felt such PURE JOY seeing her for the first time I thought it was the greatest thing ever and I became such a big Princess Twilight fan. The adult fans really ruined it for me though honestly. Its fine to enjoy kids shows as adults, but the way bronies absolutely ruined everything for younger fans sucked SO BAD at the time. I will forever still dislike a lot of bronies for that reason.
I was the demographic age for the show back then (i was 6 or 7 and a huge fan) i really thought twilight becoming an alicorn was the best thing to happen. Young children cant really grasp if its a good or bad decision all their really thinking is "Princess princess wings horsie" but yeah, i loved alicorn twilight.
I think I was 12? I was totally pissed. Twilight is obviously the main character but personally I thought the episodes where she played an equal or lesser role than the others were the strongest, and every episode where she was a savior was super obnoxious. Then I hated how the episode was an absolute whirlwind, it felt so contrived-we couldn’t get a special for this? And then I hated the princess thing, like it always bugged the shit out of me that nominally, she held the same power as Celestia, when Celestia truly should have been called queen. Weird to see other people who were my age at the time who disagree, because I genuinely still dislike them turning her into a princess--especially this early in the show.
I've been a fan since before g4 and I remember the first commercial announcing g4, but when it came out I was only 5. I do remember when this episode aired being really happy because I was a little girl, but looking back I can see how older me could have been upset with the change plot wise. I have a very specific memory of running to my parents after seeing the announcement for equestria girls and begging my parents to get the movies 😭
I just got into the show, i started watching only last year...and other the fact often ponies around her seem to not notice she is an alicorn at times and treat her like a normal unicorn, i dun kind her being a princess at all. Sure, from then on I think they should have slowly made ALL the main 6 alicorns to balance, but I imagine the story like that may have turned maybe too formulaic if that was the case
Did you know Discovery Family actually spoiled Applejack's parents reveal in "The Perfect Pear"? In the symptoms it literally said "The Apple siblings learn about their parents"! 🤦 Oh! And dont forget they also spoiled Spike getting wings in a promo they did for FIM one time by showing him flying fighting the giant Roc. It was only 10 seconds but still! 🤬 💢
I honestly remember coming across Mlp a bit later as a child on a streaming service, and gettinh confused on why in some episodes Twilight was a unicorn but in a different one she was an Alicorn. When I found the episode I honestly tought it was one of the most epic stuff to happen to a Mc in a serie
I agree twilight just seemed overly favoured over her friends and what she did to get that alicorn title wasn't all that if you know what im saying. But i like her design tho
I would also like to point out something that happened outside of MLP during the Alicorn phase. Season 4 was overall pretty good. But those like myself who grew comfortable around the Lauren Faust concept of MLP couldnt grow attached to this new era. In October of 2014, Five Nights at Freddy's dropped and a big portion of the MLP community had moved on to see what new adventure lies. I...gravitate often towards MLP content often to hear what people like you have to say. :D Thanks for the video, it was super informative.
Maybe in a reboot or new timeline of FIM with different animation, villains, adventures, etc (Hasbro please I beg of you) when Twilight witnesses this once again. She humbly refuses to become a princess (for reasons I’m still thinking about) Celestia understands but tells her she always has her place when she’s ready. And she continues to be unicorn Twilight for the rest of this potential series thus part of the fandom is happy
Every time there is a change in status quo there are going to be some angry people. What Larson twitted back in the day still applies today even with G5. Just watch the darn show already, so we can have more interesting discussions on what is good and bad.
Thank you! As someone who likes G5, this is something I keep saying: people hated it when Twilight got her wings, and nowadays season 4 is considered one of the best. People hated Equestria Girls when it first came out, and now there are people who prefer it to Friendship is Magic. People hated Starlight Glimmer when she joined the mane six, and now there are people who say she's their favorite character. Does G5 have it's flaws? Yes, and people are right to point them out. But let's be honest: a lot of people are being very reactionary, or just milking the controversy for clout.
I was the biggest Twilicorn hater back in 2013 lol. I was 14 at the time, so my reasons were slightly shaky (mostly just based in being uneasy about change) but some of them I still sort of stand by. 1) I hated that the balance of the show was thrown off - the cast had been perfectly balanced with 2 girls of each race and now that was thrown off. 2) I hated that it was also imbalanced because Twilight's friends were all ordinary, whereas she outranked them and would probably outlive them. 3) I hated what this meant for her as a character because I really liked sarcastic, somewhat awkward Twi from season 1 and wanted that character arc stretched out. 4) They could not have chosen a worse looking design to promote her with. I hate that dress and that hairstyle and it filled me with dread. Twilight's signature secondary color had always been BLUE, so seeing her in a frilly pink dress was a bad omen. Also the wings look kinda weird on her. I still hold that opinion tbh... 5) Oh noooo! Not MY headcanons about future Twilight! Now I also won't be able to look at all that fanart or read the fanfics of the girls in the future the same because I know it's wrong. And think about what this could do to the PMV scene! It's just going to look weird mixing all those scenes of Unicorn!Twilight and Alicorn!Twilight :(
I get what the people saying Celestia made her an Alicorn without her consent are saying but you have to understand Celestia was singing the song moments before about it being Twilight’s destiny, you can’t control what’s meant to happen for or to you.
But that's exactly why some people don't like the whole idea of "destiny" because it means they're not actually in control of their own life. I'd hate it if I had a certain career I wanted to purse, but then get told I have to be something different because "it's your destiny." F*** with destiny, I should be in control of my own life. My future shouldn't be written for me, my future should be whatever I alone make it to be.
While not at first around s6 and so on in the show all the fears that the bronies of the past had with Twilight becoming an Alicorn came to pass It really felt like they didn't know what to do with her as the show went on and after S4 her character arc pretty much was done because it was focused on her finding her purpose. (Also the fact that by the later half of the show the old writers all pretty much left) It really felt like they tried to phase her out of being the main character in favor of Starlight but were afraid to go all the way on that plot point
We know from the internal development leaks that Josh Haber had his own ulterior motives once he became story editor. He wanted Starlight and a new cast of characters to replace the mane six, but Hasbro wouldn't let him. This eventually manifested as the student six instead, and is why Starlight's role in the show feels so jarring and inorganic at times.
I remember when this happened. I was 21 at the time, and I'd be lying if I said it didn't bother me at first. It wasn't just the fact that Twilight was getting her wings: 1.) It was the assumption that the show was suddenly coming to an end. Even M.A. Larson admitted that he thought it was as well, and that's why the episode was written as such. I think we would've been fine if it was the ultimate conclusion to the series, but it all felt too rushed and out of the blue. 2.) She was going to outlive her friends since alicorns are either immortal or long-living. 3.) Twilight was going to leave Ponyville and move back to Canterlot to fulfill her royal duties, thus not seeing her friends as often. 4.) She'd be treated differently now that she was royalty. Looking back on it, I think we eventually got used to Twilight's status, and the show treated the situation organically with each episode. They acknowledged it, while also learned to evolve as the series went on.
Very funny to me just HOW big of a deal this was back in the day and then Season 4 ended up being a fan favorite. Not only that, but the season finale begins with a (totally fantastic) song literally all about Twilight anxious about being a princess and other princesses singing how she deserves to be one I don't think looking back at old memes and forum posts can truly portray how salty people were over learning about Twilicorn. Somehow fans of the show back then were convinces that it wasnt a Toy Show, it was a Show that had Toys. As time would go on, I fuckin WISH the show were more craven with hocking merchandise. Its a crime against me specifically that we never got toys for the Friendship School students As a Transformers fan, I was used to things like Optimus getting a new body to sell a new toy (this happened TWICE in Beast Wars), so none of this fazed me. I was just excited to see what could have been a potential series finale.
A lot of the fandom couldnt seem to understand the whole "toy commercial" aspect honestly. Most fans didnt seem to realzie that it was a slice of life show first and a adventure show second
Funny, how Lauren Faust herself (possibly) realized that Hasbro's shows were toy adverts first and good stories second in the company's eyes before anybrony ever did.
to be honest, since i used to watch mlp since like 2014, i still prefer the episodes where she didn't have wings, or at least before she got the castle. i don't know but s1-s3 was PEAK mlp for me.
Ah yes, Twilight becoming an alicorn is one of if not the biggest controversy in MLP. I'mma just say this, the claims about Twilight becoming a "Mary Sue" because she became an Alicorn and a princess did NOT aged well. Anyway, this is an interesting video.
Especially since discord dropped the bomb shell that the sisters never did anything as to train twilight to take over, not because they were wraker than twilight
I think that all of them should have been alicorns because they all equally contributed to helping out Equestria Also, having 1 princess, 2 pegasi 2 earth ponies and just *1* unicorn just felt unbalanced
(I'm someone who was the actual demographic for the show at the time) Twilight getting wings was cool at first, but then I quickly realized what a bad move from Hasbro it was (mind u I was a literal child) I'd literally imagine how Twilight didn't want her wings; that's how much I hated the idea They changed her personality from an amazing one to a literal boomer when she got the wings, kinda like a mother to the group which wasn't really true to first seasons' concept where everyone was equal and just basically a bunch of random civil ponies who could've been anyone tbh (that's what made them special and fun to watch) Basically she's a completely different character that changed the dynamic in mane 6 and I aint here for it, especially since Twilight herself was visibly disappointed w the fact she couldn't pursue the path she'd chosen
yess couldn't agree more! I'd also say that she instantly became less of an actual character and more of a prop. The really really smart one who spends all day studying and knows more than everybody else and is in pony academia is the one who gets to be the princess! Great...
The problem wasn't that it came out of left field - it didn't, she got her first crown in Ep.2 - the problem was that without Fausts supervision the writers didn't know what to do with a 'Princess' Twilight. So they ignored her status as royalty for almost the entirety of the show. Sadly, considering the skill of some of the writers, we probably didn't miss out on much. They weren't even able to write her into a dangerous situation without making her spontaneously forget literally all of her magical abilities ... so side arcs or entire episodes about Twiggles trying to survive the politics of the sisters court, let alone forming her own, would've been a disaster and probably even worse than what we got. Anyway ... all hail the Princess of Books
there was foreshadowing from the beginning from her having a crown instead of a necklace for her element of harmony, to celestia saying (something like) “once she completes this task, we will know she is that much closer to being ready” to luna during the crystal empire episode i personally liked the show as a whole and think that twilight becoming a princess opened a few doors that wouldn’t have been possible if she hadn’t ex: the battle with terek. what would they have done instead of giving twilight all the alicorn magic?
to me the whole twilight becoming an alicorn thing was very fascinating, and just made things better for me. it was like a key element to keep the story and lore going. it's really funny to see how the mlp fandom was coping so fucking hard over something that to me, seemed expected lmao. I haven't been in this fandom since the very beginning but it's still funny.
I mean tbh people now should be more upset over the fact sunny starscout got her alicorn powers at the very beginning of this new series _I know some are but y'know, like- huh??_
As someone who was the actual target demographic for the show at the time ( I think I was 10 maybe 12 I'm not sure), I was really angry was Twilight gets wings. I remember very well how angry I was that this happened. I don't remember the main reason, maybe because I didn't like the character changes too much, or because I thought Twilight's reason for getting those wings was stupid or maybe because my childhood alicorn theory was shattered by this episode and that's why I didn't like it so much xD
While I wasn't around in the fandom at the time, looking at it retrospectively I have to say I didn't like the change. When Twilight became a Princess I felt that a lot of the smaller interpersonal conflicts were suddenly elevated to dimensions which they were never supposed to. I also feel that it made her character less relateble, in theory I don't dislike the concept, but in actuallity her character arc, as well as its conclusion made her personality more bland instead of developing it in my opionion. I can still appreciate how they gave her some time to express anxieties and uncertaintied about her new role and a bit of time to ease in, it made Twily feel more grounded as a character. In concept I believe that Friendship problems and the whole Princess thing could work, the reason I dislike probablly has more to do with the fact that Lauren Faust left, as well as the show padding out some of the character in ways they were probablly never conceived to, to saturate its runtime in order to appease the higher-ups.
Awesome video! My friend I was watching the show with through high school actually stopped watching the show because of Twilight becoming an alicorn. could not convince him to keep watching no matter what I did. I am super happy with how things turned on with Twilight in the end. honestly the only thing I hate about her arch is her castle. I loved the library so much more :(
As someone who was part of the show's target demographic when MMC came out and only got into the show late season 2 (i was 8) i was just glad that twilight got her wings because she wasn't able to help rainbow dash in the winter wrap up episode due to NOT having them, like no joke when i first learned about twilicorn my first thought was "yayyyy now she can help dashie :DDDD"
I will never get over Twilicorn. My old iPad 2 is still full of anti Twilicorn memes and stuff. I remember the fear and the dread; we had been watching how MLP was slowly starting to become the "Twilight Sparkle Show". MMC only confirmed it. All the other characters became nothing more than steps for Twi to climb up the ladder of Godhood. To quote L. Faust "the plans I had for her are now completely irrelevant". This felt like a stab in the back. A betrayal to what this show had been so far, and what made it so amazing.
As a kid, I literally did not give a shit about the alicorn twilight controversy. I was more worried about whether the show would continue or not. I was on that 3rd/4th grader copium until season 4 relased.
i was a fan since the show started airing, although i was too young to use the internet at that time so i wasn't around for the controversy around this. i did enjoy this episode when i first watched it and i still do, but in hindsight i do think that twilight becoming an alicorn was kind of a... Bad decision? even if twilight is like the _main_ main character, the other 5 girls are also main characters as well. the point of the show was that they're all best friends and through sticking together they get through hardships and grow as people, they all had their differences but they were equals, y'know? but twilight becoming not only a princess but an ALICORN threw that way off kilter, like if i'm remembering correctly the other mane six bowed to her when her alicorn form got revealed lmao. they were no longer equals, and now in the finale we saw pinkie, fluttershy, rainbow, AJ and rarity all grow old while twilights living an immortal life as the ruler of equestria, doomed to literally watch her friends pass away. that feels like a really dark ending for a show about magical horses that love friendship? X) now i just remembered the episode where they're performing the play about unicorns, earth ponies and pegasi and how in the end, they were all equal. that episode is kind of ironic looking back on it lol, even more so when you think about the plot in G5's movie
I only started watching mlp:fim after the first equestria girls movie came out but before season 4 started. So for me it was just part of the story. Although I thought that Twilight's element of harmony being a crown instead of a necklace like the others was foreshadowing her becoming a princess eventually. Magical mystery cure is one of my favourite episodes.
I remember how I left the fandom because of twicorn and lauren faust wasn't happy with that change, which motivated me more to stop being a brony. twicorn just became so hideous, her body and wings look terrible lmao it was all rushed, if she became an alicorn in season 5 or so, uniting other species it would have been impactful. but we have what we have. the equestria girls wingless twilight in one of the sequels was such a joy to see again by the way.
Funny enough I was the target demographic for this at the time and really fell in love with MLP during 2012. According to Historical Pony events on Twitter, Princess Twilght Sparkle was hands down the most controversial, out of everything post season 3. Despite what I am about to say I still love MLP and its later episodes. K thanks. I dont feel like people actually remember why people were so mad about what was going on in Season 3. The Crystal Empire was oddly written. Keep Calm and Flutter on happened and it was shocking to see Discord tamed, so with Magical Mystery cure strolling in, it worried people about what MLP was turning into. It went from Slice of Life learning lessons, to actually having a heads-on approach to establishing the story, something which was a stark contrast to the past 2 seasons. Magical Mystery cure fits the name perfectly. Its an actual mystery how any of this makes sence from 2013's prespective. There have been bronies sitting and debating for over 16 hours on how this episode is supposed to sound. Twilight reads a book which is incomplete and that is enough to alter the Elements of Harmony. How did Celestia know this was going to happen? Did Starswirl know about the Elements of harmony? The what? The how? And then the Alicorn transformation, can all Alicorns do this? Can Twilight now do this power? "The show's storyline only gets more fragmented from here" - Littleshy 2013 In my opinion: MLP seasons 1 and 2 and a little bit of 3, focus mainly on what the mane 6 can achieve through friendship. It was written so carefully that almost all characters that represented the elements of Harmony, stayed in their elements and often didnt break outside of that character. The mane 6 always relied on eachother to often fix and mend problems they couldnt fix themselves. (A dog and Pony show, Green Isnt your color, The Return of Harmony) And above all else, not hearing "Dear princess Celestia" at the end of my episode gives me stockholm syndrome. So where does Twilight becoming an Alicorn affect this? Her ascention into royalty caused a dynamic shift away from the Mane six and towards saving or helping Equestria. It put the "friendship is magic" into question becuase now the Mane six arent her priority and learning about friendship took a step back, this gets further rammed into us by returning the Elements to the "tree" macguffin.
Yes, i do agree that Twilight becoming an alicorn in ONE EPISODE with almost NO foreshadowing/hints was pretty rushed, but i also do not think it was a bad thing! Twilight was the main character after all, and her being an alicorn princess made sense.
Me being the dumb 13 year old I was in 2013, wanting to get into MLP, Watched the first EQG movie first instead of the ACTUAL show. So, when I went to watch the show, I was surprised to see that Twilight wasn't an alicorn from the get go. Then, when I watched the S3 finale, it started to make sense. It wasn't so much of a strong opinion I had as much as it was just "ooooohhhhh gotcha. Ok" Looking back, I should've just watched the show. I was just a grieving child looking for a fun show that simulated having friends when I didn't.
Thanks for watching! While you're here, consider joining my Discord server, it has a bunch of other like-minded pony fans in there! discord.gg/7KCGRQwrNb 💯
however unintentional, her having a crown for her element of harmony feels like such foreshadowing. it's crazy how people were shocked or acted like it didn't fit when the show already treated her differently than the other 5 from the very start
Yea
Yea
The original creator of the show, so the one who gave her that crown (Lauren Faust) literally never wanted Twilight to become a princess as there were supposed to be only 2 alicorns in her version of the story (celestia and luna). Personally I like to think that only Twilight got the crown because her element was the only one that Nightmare Moon hadn't shattered or/and it was the hidden one. Moreover during the time the show was being made Lauren made it obvious multiple times that she doesnt like Twilight as an alicorn (e.g. her tweets, the funko pop situation)

I think that happen for the celebration of the 30th anniversary for the whole My Little Pony franchise
I wasn't part of the fandom by that time but even still i heard al the hate towards it
I always loved how Bronies feared Twilight would lose all conflict after she became a princess but that one male pony wouldn't even let her cut ahead for a Manehatten taxi in Rarity takes Manehatten.
Interesting to hear another perspective from someone who also wasn't around back then lol
Personally, I think people were overreacting. A character can't stay the same forever. Especially considering Twilight is treated like THE main character of the show in a way compared to the rest of the Mane Six.
Except she wasn't.
@@baffledbrandon3132 Even still, Twilight made them bond with each other even more (especially since Celestia basically tasked her with finding and forming genuine friendships).

literally perfectly said !!
even 10 years on seeing twilight as an alicorn is incredibly alien to me lol
And that's where G5 came along
@@kidsbelikethat249the rest of the Mane 6 could have been like Luna, where she's the protector of ponies rather than the ruler like Celestia.
And frankly I feel like if they really wanted to make Twilight a princess shouldnt it have been some more epic fight with epic villian not a random spell mix up?
because it was supposed to be the end of the show and they really didn't want to continue its production back then
i think that was the point of the song “you’ll play your part” because like she was a princess but she wasn’t…important yet if that makes sense?
cause in that 2 parter she fought with and destroyed terek and finally got her title and purpose
i don’t know i personally liked how they did it, and let her live as a princess/alicorn for a while before they gave her a proper “role” in equestria
but i agree, season 3 was super quick
Yeah, because that's totally why people fell in love with this snow: epic fights with epic villains. It wasn't anything sensible like the great characters or the decent writing or anything like that.
Talking about the CMCs, they didnt even get their cutie marks till season 5-
Dont get me wrong, i was estatic when they got them.
And that's where G5 came along
I remember seeing this and I was upset. Not at her becoming a alicorn princess, but because I thought it was so unfair that she became a alicorn and the rest didn’t. I thought it was so unfair because she would never would have gotten to that point without her friends. I started liking it overtime, but I still wish the rest became alicorn to tbh (though I still wish they gave more time for twilight to become a alicorn and her ending as a pallet swap of Celestia..)
I feel like them all becoming alicorns would be a bit too much
Magical mystery cure was literally the very first mlp episode I watched on TV, imagine how big of a spoiler that became for me but I neither realise nor remember it until I watched the series in order.
Ah yes one of the many incidents that threw the entire fandom into a riot...
I still don't get why people got so mad about the change, but I guess they were likely uncertain about what would happen next in the show so I guess it is understandable.
Anyways, continue the great work Toby, you do a fantastic job!
Thank you :D
Np you deserve it! /)
Pretty much every season had a moment that pissed some people off lol
From a purely aesthetic standpoint, I honestly just think Twi's design looks way better with wings.
But she was an alicorn for so long, you sometimes forget that she didn’t have wings at first.
twilight becomes alicorn:

sunny becomes alicorn:
the fandom: s u r e.
I mean, I’d only really get upset if it was anyone else. I only really watch Gen 5 for Izzy.
Because G5 is complete ass so we don't care
Twilight's her least favorite mane 6 pony because according to my sister, she's "too bossy" lol.
i honestly prefer that it happened earlier because i actually like twilight better as an alicorn and i like that we got to spend so much time with her as an alicorn. she became so much more powerful and i feel like if it had just happened at the end of the series we wouldn’t have been able to see any of that
Little 5 year old my was HYPED. So imagine my surprise when I discovered the fandom years later, that people hated it.
I still am baffled that grown ass people were getting all butthurt over a kids show with a purple cartoon horse growing wings.

They shouldn't have to succumb to pressure to be perfect." - Lauren Faust, 2010
“We’re building a very unique mythology around being a princess. Every little girl wants to be a princess, and not everybody can get to be a princess - but you can live up to the ideals that should come along with being a princess.” - Megan McCarthy, 2013
That about sums it up.
Preach, you legend!
I never had those memories. Thanks for taking me back to that time. I agree with what Tara Strong said in the interview, Twilight is still the Twilight. What makes her unique and lovable is still there.
You're welcome :D
"My Little Pony's BIGGEST Controversy"
Starlight: *sweats nervously*
I would've liked you to mention the episode "fame and misfortune" where they parody this controvy. I really don't imagine how would've been continued MLP without Twilight being an Alicorn and a princess.
Fame and Misfortune in of itself is its whole separate can of worms that could probably take up an entire video by itself lol, so I decided it wasn't relevant enough to mention here.
Girl i loved that episode for that very reason😭😭
Maybe, though in the last episode it's still shown that they're definitely ageing when compared to Twilight... so yeah :/
I remember being a 16 year old really invested in the fandom being absolutely sickened by the idea of her becoming an alicorn. I got over it quick because I never cared for twilight all that much to begin with but it was a fun time to be around.
Ah yes, the first death of the MLP fandom. I remember like it was yesterday...
It was truly a My Little Pony fandom moment...
Honestly, I'm just happy the cute colorful horses are happy.
The artstyle isnt. And that's what drew me to MLP
@@user-uo8ny1kj4c I mean it's the normal 80s style and like a lot of 80s shows it does have adorable characters (like the Williams siblings and some of the ponies). Plus it's close enough to G4 to where they can crossover without looking off putting.
@@lunakingsley.7247 If you like it, that's fine. I just don't see myself watching it due to it not having my favorite characters.
Yup, I imagine so!
Lmao that's pretty funny
Weird to see other people who were my age at the time who disagree, because I genuinely still dislike them turning her into a princess--especially this early in the show.
i honestly think they either should have never done it or waited until maybe s6
I enjoyed that, thanks for sharing!
Awesome to know you enjoyed it lol
"this show is ruined"
wait till they hear about G5
Oh! And dont forget they also spoiled Spike getting wings in a promo they did for FIM one time by showing him flying fighting the giant Roc. It was only 10 seconds but still! 🤬 💢
That's pretty interesting lol
The final episode of the show was also spoiled in the "Decade of Pony" documentary that aired right before it 🤦
The spike thing was already spoiled when a batch of episodes from that season leaked before it premiered, including the one where he gets wings
That is not spoiling that is forshadowing
i remember seeing hundreds of anti-alicorn twilight stamps on deviantart when i was little
Alicorn Twilight Sparkle > Unicorn Twilight Sparkle (I own a figure of Alicorn Twilight Sparkle btw)
I honestly remember coming across Mlp a bit later as a child on a streaming service, and gettinh confused on why in some episodes Twilight was a unicorn but in a different one she was an Alicorn. When I found the episode I honestly tought it was one of the most epic stuff to happen to a Mc in a serie
i think its just that literally nothing made her deserve to be a princess any more than the other ponies
I agree twilight just seemed overly favoured over her friends and what she did to get that alicorn title wasn't all that if you know what im saying. But i like her design tho
I was 10 when this happened, literally was so excited!! I still remember every moment, this show was my childhood ❤️❤️
You're welcome! And thanks for your comments, they were pretty interesting to read!
Great video! I love your commentary style!
Thank you!
2:33 …was he serious??? People over obsess over the smallest things.
My thoughts exactly. This is literally every community and I getting annoyed about it
I was the biggest Twilicorn hater back in 2013 lol.
While not at first around s6 and so on in the show all the fears that the bronies of the past had with Twilight becoming an Alicorn came to pass
It really felt like they didn't know what to do with her as the show went on and after S4 her character arc pretty much was done because it was focused on her finding her purpose.
@@Horgler
I can see why Josh Haber isn't so well liked among the fandom
I remember when this happened. I was 21 at the time, and I'd be lying if I said it didn't bother me at first. It wasn't just the fact that Twilight was getting her wings:
1.) It was the assumption that the show was suddenly coming to an end.
Not only that, but the season finale begins with a (totally fantastic) song literally all about Twilight anxious about being a princess and other princesses singing how she deserves to be one
I don't think looking back at old memes and forum posts can truly portray how salty people were over learning about Twilicorn. Somehow fans of the show back then were convinces that it wasnt a Toy Show, it was a Show that had Toys. As time would go on, I fuckin WISH the show were more craven with hocking merchandise. Its a crime against me specifically that we never got toys for the Friendship School students
As a Transformers fan, I was used to things like Optimus getting a new body to sell a new toy (this happened TWICE in Beast Wars), so none of this fazed me.
Thank you! :D
You're welcome :)
Especially since discord dropped the bomb shell that the sisters never did anything as to train twilight to take over, not because they were wraker than twilight
I think that all of them should have been alicorns because they all equally contributed to helping out Equestria
Also, having 1 princess, 2 pegasi 2 earth ponies and just *1* unicorn just felt unbalanced
i don't really mind twlight being an alicorn but it felt too early for her to become one in season 3
(I'm someone who was the actual demographic for the show at the time)
Twilight getting wings was cool at first, but then I quickly realized what a bad move from Hasbro it was (mind u I was a literal child)
I'd literally imagine how Twilight didn't want her wings; that's how much I hated the idea
They changed her personality from an amazing one to a literal boomer when she got the wings, kinda like a mother to the group
which wasn't really true to first seasons' concept where everyone was equal and just basically a bunch of random civil ponies who could've been anyone tbh (that's what made them special and fun to watch)
Basically she's a completely different character that changed the dynamic in mane 6 and I aint here for it, especially since Twilight herself was visibly disappointed w the fact she couldn't pursue the path she'd chosen
yess couldn't agree more! I'd also say that she instantly became less of an actual character and more of a prop. The really really smart one who spends all day studying and knows more than everybody else and is in pony academia is the one who gets to be the princess! Great...
Why the hell did people dislike this? It’s amazing to see Twilight becoming an Alicorn!
Twilight being a allicorn and having wings is pretty! 💕
there was foreshadowing from the beginning
from her having a crown instead of a necklace for her element of harmony, to celestia saying (something like) “once she completes this task, we will know she is that much closer to being ready” to luna during the crystal empire episode
i personally liked the show as a whole and think that twilight becoming a princess opened a few doors that wouldn’t have been possible if she hadn’t
ex: the battle with terek. what would they have done instead of giving twilight all the alicorn magic?
As someone who joined the fandom relatively later (2015), I had no issue seeing her evolve that way
to me the whole twilight becoming an alicorn thing was very fascinating, and just made things better for me. it was like a key element to keep the story and lore going. it's really funny to see how the mlp fandom was coping so fucking hard over something that to me, seemed expected lmao.
I haven't been in this fandom since the very beginning but it's still funny.
I mean tbh people now should be more upset over the fact sunny starscout got her alicorn powers at the very beginning of this new series
_I know some are but y'know, like- huh??_
@@BennieBunfox I think that people weren't as mad when Sunny got her wings because they just weren't as attached to her as a character lol.
@@TobbyMLP yeah ig you’re right lol
As someone who was the actual target demographic for the show at the time ( I think I was 10 maybe 12 I'm not sure), I was really angry was Twilight gets wings. I remember very well how angry I was that this happened. I don't remember the main reason, maybe because I didn't like the character changes too much, or because I thought Twilight's reason for getting those wings was stupid or maybe because my childhood alicorn theory was shattered by this episode and that's why I didn't like it so much xD
i was 7 at that time, and i remember being SOOO excited ! i didnt even know twilight was so hated until YEAARS later
I loved the library so much more :(
Thanks! And yeah I agree with you about the castle, it's fine, but the library definitely felt a lot more charming and homey.
As being the age demographic for the show I loved her being a princess and it seems a lot of people who was growing up with the show also loved it to
I didn't mind twilight being an alicorn. But then learning that Lauren Faust didn't want twilight to be an alicorn. Now I'm mixed about it.
Honestly I stopped taking Faust seriously a long time ago.
Lauren's Faust vision literally doesn't include anything we see in the show after the season 2 premiere episode
That's sweet lol
I remember getting a twilight sparkle plush with wings and i cut the wings off
😔
now i just remembered the episode where they're performing the play about unicorns, earth ponies and pegasi and how in the end, they were all equal. that episode is kind of ironic looking back on it lol, even more so when you think about the plot in G5's movie
I remember how I left the fandom because of twicorn and lauren faust wasn't happy with that change, which motivated me more to stop being a brony.
twicorn just became so hideous, her body and wings look terrible lmao
it was all rushed, if she became an alicorn in season 5 or so, uniting other species it would have been impactful.
but we have what we have.
the equestria girls wingless twilight in one of the sequels was such a joy to see again by the way.
It doesn't look that bad
I think Season 4 would have bee a decent spot
I dont care about twilight becoming an alicorn i like it
Funny enough I was the target demographic for this at the time and really fell in love with MLP during 2012.
"The show's storyline only gets more fragmented from here" - Littleshy 2013
In my opinion: MLP seasons 1 and 2 and a little bit of 3, focus mainly on what the mane 6 can achieve through friendship.
Ok"
Looking back, I should've just watched the show. I was just a grieving child looking for a fun show that simulated having friends when I didn't.
