Something I never liked about some Princess Celestia toys is how they’d make her eyes look to the side which makes her look incredibly weird from the front Also I kind of miss when they would include random “background” ponies in the early brushable toyline before they got completely phased out later on. I remember owning a few of them as a kid lol
8:45 is very funny to me, because when i was the target demographic i DEFINITELY noticed, and little inconsistencies like that annoyed me to an abnormal degree 😭😭 the same with fluttershy having rainbow dash's body type in the earliest blind bags, it made kid me so mad
I really like the toy exclusive princesses, they make collecting g4s much more fun since brushable ponies didnt have much character variety unlike the blind bags.
Honestly yeah and I do think that Skyla was part of a maybe idea of bringing "Flurryheart" to the show but was set on the backburner for whatever reason, being change in show plans, being moved due to the idea of Alicorn Twilight, or was just that, a weird toy only Alicorn with no real connection to any of the main ones.
@@Kaeyas_no1_Fan I KNOW I HAD HER AS A KID TOOO😭 i still have my childhood one but her leg is permanently bent from being in some box for several years
Great video! My theory on Gold Lily and Sterling's existence is that they wanted to put to use the large alicorn mold. Theres only a handful of canon characters that use it, and they probably can only do so many rereleases on Celestia, Chrysalis and Nightmare Moon before they run out of ideas. Im guessing thats also why Twilight got some toys where they used the medium size alicorn mold.
It feels like AJ was made for the more adventurous part that Lauren had planned for MLP before she left, so after that they probably just didnt know what to do with her and left her out
I've been the proud owner of a very pink celestia since childhood. Her hair's a mess and her body is a bit discolored from age but she has a special place in my heart
I feel like they felt like removing AJ’s hat because they didn’t want to spend more money to make a small hat that people would likely lose. Princess Sterling and Princess Gold Lily give me the vibe that they intended to translate Generation One’s interpretation of Princess Ponies into FiM, everyone forgot about it, and Sterling and Gold Lily are leftovers from that.
This helped me so much. I had these toys as a kid and always wondered what the characters came from. There were so many that were off the books not from the show! (Awesome video! keep up the good work.)
Honestly, Applejack not having a hat wouldn’t be such a big deal if the artwork on the package didn’t show her wearing one. It’d still be weird, but the toyline is clearly its own thing from the show, so you could maybe give it a pass.
It was fun getting to drive into the oddities of the MLP toys, i got to say the moldy furry Twilight was the strangest and weirdest one i saw in the video, it was interesting to learn about it. Loved the visual style in this video it was really unique!!!
1:26 Looks like Fluttershy cut her hair ! In the show, Fluttershy has a beautiful long hair, but instead of giving her a mold, they nade her with short hair ! They literally recolored Rainbow Dash 😅
For the Applejack plushies, they couldve gotten rid of her hat so you could put her in different outfits and/or to sell her hat as a seperate accessory. i know the build a bear mlp plushies did this.
7:04 these toys were made before the show started to be producted. I think Célestia was originally pink but they changed to white and used the pink on Cadance
I mostly think the hat was excluded because removable parts can be a choking hazard to children It could be molded to the toy though but itd probably be more work for them lol
7:03 I think those pink Celestia toys were manufactered after the series, that’s why Celestia in the early toys was pink 11:45 Princess Skyla would be the older sister of FlurryHeart 2:53 Bumblesweet actually was not made up for the sake of the blindbags, she was actually a Pony in G3 and she was also in the G4 MLP: FIM show as a background character, also Bumblesweet's name was changed to Honey Buzz in a brushable figure for some reason
Lauren Faust said that Celestia was supposed to be white, but Hasbro colored her pink in the toys so they would sell more. Once Cadance was introduced they started selling show accurate Celestia toys
I remember being pretty young when the Skyla thing was going around. There were badly photoshopped Cadence images and everything, it was a wild west I was really confused when Flurry Heart was revealed and when I came back to the show, seemingly no one remembered a certain pepto bismol horse... (I miss Skyla)
princess sterling and gold lily are so nostalgic to me. Celestia isn't the only one who is incorrectly thought by many to be white. Rarity isn't a white pony either, she is actually really light grey. You can tell by comparing the colour of their coat with the actual white in her eyes. This was also confirmed by one of the animators (was it Sibsy?) who revealed the RGB colour codes for each of the ponies
I don't think they "made moldy twilight red" I think the original color got terribly discolored or something. Or the purple color didn't come out the way they thought it would.
When I was younger i used to collect and Yes play a lot of my little pony toys and I loved getting the sets. I remember having some of the target exclusive canterlot stuff and also having a lot of the limited stuff.
I think you’re looking at this through too much of a G4 lens. As long as my little pony toy lines have existed there have been characters created that don’t show up in the shows. They are both to add variety to the toy line for kids, but I think the bigger draw is adding variety to the toy line for collectors. I learned recently that toy companies like Hasbro have to market to children’s parents because children don’t have money so that also means marketing to an adult audience and Hasbro is very aware of their adult collectors otherwise ponies like upside down Applejack and the original line rereleases wouldn't have been developed.
Plus some of the ones he talks about, Bumblesweet I know for sure but I think I recognised other names, are just ponies from previous generations, not really "new" ponies
I remember as a kid whenever I would see a pony toy who didn't appear in the show, I was convinced they were coming to the show at some point. I was so disappointed when they never made it on tv! I was convinced the two princesses must be the lost sisters or something.
I honestly miss some of those Hasbro OC ponies. A lot of the bg ponies from the show don't really do it for me and I just prefer those original characters way better. Not to mention that at some point Hasbro just said "whatever" and only ever released the main six and Starlight with only new ponies coming in those blind bags. Makes collecting really unfun.
7:03 I think those pink Celestia toys were manufactered after the series, that’s why Celestia in the early toys was pink 11:45 Princess Skyla would be the older sister of FlurryHearth
Twinkleshine appears to actually be a real pony in the show, a background one, but one none the less her coat color is supposed to be ivory, and it appears almost every white pony ends up light pink for some reason. Also the main theory of the pony baby was that it was supposed to be flurryheart but the episode with flurry hearts birth came out in i think season 5 which is a few years from 2012, so the theory basically goes that they where supposed to do the whole baby thing earlier but for one reason or another decided not to and ended up doing it later instead but since the baby design was used in the toy they scrapped it and made an entirely new one.
You can tell Celestia is a pink off white color if you compare to her teeth It would also make sense given her outline is also pink, and the show uses colored line art mostly
i remember finding it really weird that fluttershy was the only mane six member to not have a unique mold, especially when that means that all of the pegasi figures have to share the same mold. my guess for luna's color palette is that her model sheets were given to the toy designers either before or during her debut but before her redesign, and they didn't want to go back to change it because they didn't want to make another model sheet when they can just keep making purple luna toys
I remember when I was a kid, my parents bought me a set with Gold Lily, I chose it myself, and then when I got carried away with the ask blog of Princess Molestia, I started playing as if Gold Lily was a Molestia.
Early art for Applejack didn’t show her with a hat and considering the toys were developed alongside the show that’s likely why she didn’t have her hat (though that doesn’t explain why she didn’t have her hat later on)
When it comes to the lack of Applejack's hat, I think the toys with brushable hair is understandable since hair has been a longtime selling point for the toys.
My mom used to buy me the little figurines in one box during Christmas back in the 2000s I loved those things I had small books cds etc and the baby ponies I had baby sweetie belle and baby sunny daze and many more lol
As of this video, the “My Little Pony” toys are now inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame this year. The others were “Transformers” and “Phase 10” as their inductees. Congratulations to “My Little Pony”.
having random toy exclusive ponies has been a thing ever since the start of mlp. hell its been a thing for transformers as well, using the same toy mold and just recoloring main characters to make other characters (ie starscream's trine all looking exactly like him) its a hasbro thing that they always have done with their toys and they always will do with their toys.
If I had to guess I’d say Luna is lighter in her toys because her earlier design was probably the model all the toy manufacturers were given. It also could be because some of the details (the lines for her eyes or whatever) wouldn’t appear that well on a darker body color. Either way, neat video!
Applejack did once come with a hat once, in an old toy set with the applejack figurine with a cider stand with it. There was a hat with a little elastic at the bottom for applejack to wear :)
Brooo i HAD Princess Sterling and saw Gold Lily next to her but my dad would only let me buy one so I got Sterling I ADORED HER, she was my favorite in my entire collection of MLP toys, I knew she wasn’t related to the show in anyway but I didn’t care because I made up my own stories I had this one purple MLP toy that had giant butterfly like wings that I made Sterlings little sister (or daughter, I don’t remember) and god I wish I got Gold Lily too man I even had an extra really pink celestial toy that I painted and turned into a custom princess too but I don’t think I have her anymore, I don’t remember what I named her 😭
Maybe the alicorns could have been planned to appear but got scrapped from the show? Also i have a small apple jack figure that has her hat from a flavored water bottle

Cherry spices DID appear in the show as a background character. Twinkle Shine was a real character from the show, just white with light pink hair and blue eyes, and appear with Lemon Hearts, and Minuette as Twilight's old friends in the first episode of MLP: FIM
I think they wanted to do what they did with g3 and just recolour ponies that would never appear in the shows. G3 has tons of ponies but other than the colour pallets they’re all the same base. The company probably didn’t realize that since the show is much more than just an ad for people, they couldn’t get away with it reusing based and inventing one off characters the same way they could have in the past
my crack theory on luna's colors being weird is they just didn't get the memo on her S2 onward design until way late; her first few releases were based on her S1 design (using the smaller mold because there was no alternative), and then they made the medium alicorn mold for cadence and probably went "oh this fits (S1) luna pretty well let's do it." i don't think the show staff and toymakers communicate small details during production (which is why new show characters could take a year or two to get toys, they're going off of aired episodes), so while they were doing this they probably had no idea the show was changing luna's design. and by the time Luna Eclipsed aired they had already committed to S1 luna on the taller mold and i assume didn't want to change it a third time, so that's why it took until the reboot overhaul for them to finally fix her lol
Twinkleshine actually does appear in the show, she's one of twilight's unicorn friends in canterlot. You just didn't recognize her because they used rarity stock art on the brushable and made her pink even though she's white in the show
Moldy Twilight originally was in the video, however, I cut it out from the rest of the video at the request of the current owner of the prototype. But basically, the moldy Twilight is a weird prototype that was likely seemingly a failed/rejected attempt at making a flocked So Soft pony toyline for G4, similar to the So Soft pony toyline seen in G1 of MLP from the 1980s. Some person who worked at the factory the prototype was made at then sold it on Ebay.

my crack theory on luna's colors being weird is they just didn't get the memo on her S2 onward design until way late; her first few releases were based on her S1 design (using the smaller mold because there was no alternative), and then they made the medium alicorn mold for cadence and probably went "oh this fits (S1) luna pretty well let's do it." i don't think the show staff and toymakers communicate small details during production (which is why new show characters could take a year or two to get toys, they're going off of aired episodes), so while they were doing this they probably had no idea the show was changing luna's design. and by the time Luna Eclipsed aired they had already committed to S1 luna on the taller mold and i assume didn't want to change it a third time, so that's why it took until the reboot overhaul for them to finally fix her lol
Dear Princess Celestia
*cough cough cough*
I’m dying
*cough cough cough*
Take me out of my misery RIGHT NOW
I enjoyed making up my own story for the recolor ponies. I remember being so excited for Princesses Sterling and Goldlily but nope
Twinkleshine actually does appear in the show, she's one of twilight's unicorn friends in canterlot. You just didn't recognize her because they used rarity stock art on the brushable and made her pink even though she's white in the show
They likely made her pink for the same reason the early Celestia toys were pink

Why did no one talk about mouldy twilight? I need to know more about her.
Where is she in the video? She’s not there. Where is Moby Twilight?
Moldy Twilight originally was in the video, however, I cut it out from the rest of the video at the request of the current owner of the prototype.
But basically, the moldy Twilight is a weird prototype that was likely seemingly a failed/rejected attempt at making a flocked So Soft pony toyline for G4, similar to the So Soft pony toyline seen in G1 of MLP from the 1980s. Some person who worked at the factory the prototype was made at then sold it on Ebay.
@@TobbyMLP ty forgiving the information
I used to have both Princess sterling and goldlily, until my friend stole them and never told me
i love sporelight sparkle
That Twilight Sparkle thing is the most hilariously weird thing I've seen all day
Omg I just thrifted Dew Drop Dazzle the other day😂😂😂
Sporelight sparkle is my favourite background pony
Wish they did a so soft collection with gen 4
