    Immortal Celibidache directing his orchestra on the music of the prodigy Enescu who at the age of 7 went to the University of Vienne to study music. This is genuine art.

    Celi dancing! He's actually dancing on the podium. Who'd a thunk it? This is the guy who managed to get that massive, magnificent Bruckner sound while making the fewest possible movements. Great performance, although this piece really demands a well-miked stereo recording.

    I'm not sure I understand you comment. It's the part with "It brought out the Roumanian gypsy in me" that I don't get. Enescu was inspired by the romanian traditional music for this, it has nothing to do with traditional gipsy music of the romanian gipsy's.
    As for the yelling from around 09:00 ... Celibidache was a lot unorthodox in deed, it's part of his style, like his dancing. He's yelling "STAI ASA !" which can be roughly translated as "KEEP IT LIKE THIS", or "HOLD IT LIKE THIS"

      That's the general accepted idea (dacians are the ancestors of romanians).
      There is still a big debate on how much of the dacians is still part of the heritage. Some are saying more, some saying less...

    RAPSODÍE s.f. 1. Episod dintr-o scriere epică, recitată și cântată public de rapsozi. ♦ Scriere lirică în versuri, fantezistă și sentimentală, de un colorit pitoresc. ♦ Lucrare formată din fragmente luate din diferite scrieri. 2. Piesă instrumentală scrisă pentru pian sau orchestră într-o formă liberă, al cărei element de bază îl constituie cântecul popular. [Gen. -iei. / cf. fr. rhapsodie, it. rapsodia, lat., gr. rhapsodia]. asta ca raspuns pentru dsarrafi a nu confunda cintecul popular romanesc cu productiile muzicale de provenienta rroma sau tiganeasca

    Dear Mr. dsarrafi, I'm sorry but I just can't help it to not reply to your comment! I understand what you meant, but I'm not sure others do. First of all in English language it's Romanian and not RoUmanian and second, by saying Romanian gypsy you've just insulted 20 million Romanians which are NOT GYPSYES. Gypsies in Romania are a minority and either you call them rroms or simply gypsies - there's no such thing as Romanian gypsy. ENESCU has nothing to do with gypsies nor does CELIBIDACHE!

      Lucius Priscus Pai vad ca tie de fapt nu iti place cum dirijeaza, nu ce parere are despre Enescu...Doar ca ti-ai gasit un alt motiv sa-l critici indirect.

    • @danieln.9233
      @danieln.9233 9 років тому

      Muzica stie, e clar, altfel nu ajungea unde a ajuns. Povestea nu e ca tin neaparat sa-l critic, am atentionat doar ca sa nu fie impovarat cu prea mult patriotism, data fiind parerea lui despre Enescu.. De ce nu se scalambaie la Mahler, de exemplu..?

    • @tudorconducta1929
      @tudorconducta1929 8 років тому +7

      Adica, fie ca e Mahler, fie ca e Bruckner, fie ca e Mozart, fie ca e Enescu... sa dirijam in acelasi fel? Incruntat si "serios", nu? Chiar si Enescu fiind... ori ca e Oedipe, ori ca e Rapsodia, ori ca e una din ultimele Simfonii, ori ca e Poema... sa dirijam totul la fel de "serios"? Rapsodia e o explozie de verva, de vana, de veselie si de sarbatoare. Celibidache, in aceasta versiune, da viata fiecarui episod. A-i reprosa faptul ca face asta in loc sa dirijeze la fel cum dirijeaza Mahler sau Bruckner este cu totul irelevant.
      Cat despre parerea lui despre Enescu... sa nu scoatem din context. Asa tot scotand din context s-a perpetuat ideea ca lui Celi nu-i placea Enescu. A spus doar atat, ca Enescu ar fi putut face Scoala Romaneasca de compozitie, de muzica, de cultura muzicala... dar n-a facut-o, sau a facut-o prea putin. Atat. In rest, astept dovada unde Celi spune ca nu-i place Enescu.

    Virtuosic orchestra and virtuosic (albeit unorthodox) conductor! It brought out the Roumanian gypsy in me and I'm not even Roumanian! I heard things in this old mono recording that I had not heard in any other Hi Fi recording before. Too bad the conductor put a small blemish on this historic recording by yelling at a member of the orchestra at around 09:00!

  • @DariusSarrafi
    @DariusSarrafi 11 років тому

    Rhapsody is a musical piece inspired by 19th century gypsy violin playing. The title alone implies “gypsy music”. You want to call it "traditional" be my guest.
    As for Celibidache yelling, he was clearly chastising a member or section. No excuse for that!
    Having said that, this is one of the best performances I have ever heard (not just of this piece). He is an extraordinary conductor conducting a virtuosic orchestra whose members deserved respect.

  • @DariusSarrafi
    @DariusSarrafi 11 років тому

    And you are insulting all gypsies by taking my complements to the performance as an insult to Roumanians (variant spelling of Romanian; check the dictionary). Also look up the definition of Rhapsody in a music dictionary. It started out as an orchestral piece inspired by gypsy violin playing. So Enescu had everything to do with gypsies when he wrote this Rhapsody. Finally the word gypsy is not derogatory (look that up in the dictionary too). I would be honored to be called a gypsy.
