Ladyhawkke - and all in his memory too. He only used a score when there were three participants - orchestra, soloist and his brilliant self. If I have made an error in this statement please correct me but I believe it comes from a trustworthy source. The Maestro could 'demolish' a whole symphony in three to four working days at home, only needing a memory brush-up for later performances. All that and fluent in seven European languages. Whew! Makes me tired to think of it. One of Romania's greatest artists. So glad he adhered to his preference for music and didn't follow his heavy-handed father who wanted him to be a local government official.
Courtesy of Wikipedia.org "Maurice Ravel" The last composition Ravel completed in the 1920s, Boléro, became his most famous. He was commissioned to provide a score for Ida Rubinstein's ballet company & he decided on "an experiment in a very special and limited direction ... a piece lasting seventeen minutes and consisting wholly of orchestral tissue without music". Ravel continued that the work was "one long, very gradual crescendo. There are no contrasts, and there is practically no invention except the plan and the manner of the execution. The themes are altogether impersonal." He was astonished, and not wholly pleased, that it became a mass success. When one elderly member of the audience at the Opéra shouted "Rubbish!" at the premiere, he remarked, "That old lady got the message!" The work was popularised by the conductor Arturo Toscanini, and has been recorded several hundred times. Ravel commented to Arthur Honegger, one of Les Six, "I've written only one masterpiece - Boléro. Unfortunately there's no music in it."
If you see a duck gliding gracefully through the water, you don’t see the hard work it has to do under the waterline. Maestro Celibidache makes it looks like easy, gracefully and always in control, gliding on the waterline, the way he conducts his Orchestra.
He lives every note, he explained in his Musical Phenomenology that a musician is discovering the music every instant, the composer just makes a suggestion but the music is created in the interpretation, with a fresh first look approach, even though every thing was over rehearsed and the tempo more likely slower than most conductors so we could appreciate the complexity of the body of sound. He does not look upon the repetitions as reiterating or monotonous, every new frase is a fresh new start note by note and the build up in intensity is monumental, with total control over the volumes to be able to reach brilliantly the culmination, still with lower volumes than most directors. I have never heard any conductor do anything remotely like this. He explained that it occurs naturally in all music but mostly in Ravel we should try listen the super harmonics several octaves higher that we ignore but in the case of Ravel he generously writes some of them down for us, you can here some of those higher harmonies around minute 8:08 or 10:41 but they are happening all the time we don't hear them because of the microphones used in the recordings, the occur naturally in the concert hall so you had to see him live otherwise that was not his music. Ichi go ichi e was part of his philosophy. This is a once in a lifetime interpretation, a historic event. The greatest conductor in history! He used to receive 20 and 30 minutes of applause. And wouldn't mind the coughing or any noises in the hall, everything for him was a part of that unique instant. He had a very deep understanding of art and human emotions with a Buddhist inspiration, I had the good fortune to see him several times, the experience was electrifying, mystical. Thank you for sharing! Even though he would have never authorized it... he was vehemently opposed to recordings and electronic reproduction of music, imagine that! Today we mostly only hear electronically reproduced music in low quality digital audio in computer speakers and headsets which filter out all the harmonics, noises and also the emotion of life, into a beautifully wrapped present but empty. Our modern world has forgotten or never appreciated these concepts, we only have this moment. in most composer's lifetime before recordings began their music could only be heard once or twice, in a very special event, a concert! while today we can repeat it a hundreds times, fix it in our memory and then we lose the spontaneity of the first listening, the first love! we always compare it with what we've heard before, we already "know" it, when it should be like the discovery of a new landscape, an adventure, like you see on his expressions on every note. Today we buy low quality digitalized emotion, ones and zeros with no heart. Please study this man and his philosophy it's very important. One of the greatest minds of the 20th century. what is beauty? Truth, and Truth sets us free. Why do we feel emotion when we listen to beautiful music? Because we are experiencing the Truth.

Nicole Mitchell Yes ! , Nicole , that is exactly what I was feeling the first time I watched him conduct this and soaked up each and every note. But also his presence . He is nowhere else but smack-dab in the world of this piece of music. So playful and so appreciative of each member of the orchestra. Usually, maestros I have watched conduct, their egos have been fairly distracting. His playful confidence with the orchestra adds a whole other element to the experience. And not for one second does he seem self conscious or anything less than authentic . Like you said , "what life should be!!!!!"
I wonder if the Severn hundred plus people who gave this a thumbs down, are like me irritated by the annoying people who can’t sit quietly for a few minutes of their lives, without having to cough, sneeze, blow their noses, and or pass wind. For flip sake.
I have seen this video many times. Sometimes I don't revisit it for a few months . But when I do, I watch it incessantly. Over and over . I find something new each time. I'm mesmerized by this video. Ravel's Bolero is one of my favorite pieces of music . But this video ? Its mesmerizing , entrancing, incredibly passionate. I wish instead of a close up of the Master , it camera would have panned out to see him entirely. This man loses himself in this piece . He's no longer Sergiu, he's the entire orchestra, he becomes the embodiment of Bolero. From pianissimo to fortisimo. I watch it over and over and over and it mesmerizes me like the first time. My kids think I'm insane. I am for this video. I've made them watch it . Hopefully as they mature , they will see what brilliance , what a masterpiece this is.
D'acord, je sui totalment d'acord. The are no words!... All the orchestra is magnificent, and Sergiu, as ever, extract the better of them, and, at the play moment, he conveys to us the very Ravel´s emotions.

I can't stop listening to his recording of this piece. It's God driven.
Un crescendo di emozioni
Sin duda.
This was beautiful, his energy completely blows this up!
He dances and he feels the music.incredible
Outstanding performance
WOOOOOW!!!!!!! I had never heard of Maestro Celibidache before and I can't believe I've ever lived without knowing of his MAGNIFICENT artistry. What passion!!!!! This is what life should be!!!!!
doctor in music, philosophy, mathematics who spoke fluent german, english, french, italian and of course his native language! very rare a score in front of him!
Dawid Abdie And yours as well, thank you!!!

Grandiose !
This is the best version I've heard, outstanding
I wonder if the Severn hundred plus people who gave this a thumbs down, are like me irritated by the annoying people who can’t sit quietly for a few minutes of their lives, without having to cough, sneeze, blow their noses, and or pass wind. For flip sake.
Celibidache, my favorite orchestra director...great Romania!! Greetings with all my ♥️
What an amazing conductor. Love him. Brings me to tears. Beautiful
Exactly my sentiments
Its' the same for me!!!
They will adore this truly memorable performance if they let it into there hearts... Much love ❤
D'acord, je sui totalment d'acord. The are no words!... All the orchestra is magnificent, and Sergiu, as ever, extract the better of them, and, at the play moment, he conveys to us the very Ravel´s emotions.
I understand it so well, as the exact same fascination happens to me, can't stop listening.
So passionate! The band, the conductor and the music melted into one body!
Si Noi ! 💞
Celibidache could conduct an orchestra with only his eyebrows. What a genius.
I agree with you. Huge dissimilarity with Karajan.
@@zahrasi-youcef8593 You are so right. HvK used to be my favourite, now severely displaced.
In my opinion Sergiu Celibidache was one of the best conductors of the world. Drive with an unlimited passion.

I give this performance an absolute “10”...
Genije nad genijima... bravo Sergiu...
45 years lapsed but I never heard anything close to this performance of Bolero.
Masterpiece!
Almost as good as Morton Gould.
Denis Plutalov Better than schizoid, incoherent, characterless and bland piano performances of a racist loser like you.

@@mitican Hey, Meaty Can, for you I'm Dr. Plutalov, and the level of my expertise is much higher than most of those who comment here. Listen to Mengelberg's performance of the Bolero and shut up!

The expression and emotion of this man... I love it!
Era un vrajitor al muzicii simtea fiecare nota ne transmitea atata emotie!!so much emotions!! Thank you,Maestro
He is immortal. He shows what music is.
The greatest performance ever. When Ravel dreamt this master piece, Celibidache was directing it. And, not to forget the filmimg team, pure genius
Try Bernstein's
Thank me later :)
Ravel never thought that Bolero was a masterpiece. He thought of it more as a piece of trash ;-)
I was listening this masterpiece toghether with my father on his vinil records almost 40 years ago. He used to have more than 150 vinils, all of them only classic music.
Superb and very expressive mimicry of the Romanian conductor. A "feeler" of the melody composed by Ravel.
Sergiu Celibidache clearly was a wizard! Making magic every second, enjoying it like only chiidren, mad ones and genious may. He was casting spells with that wand and he didn't even mind trying to disguise. So was Ravel.
I'm appalled that there are so many "thumbs down". This Orchestra Director was a genius of our times. Anybody not seeing that is blind. Even deaf people would be delighted to watch immortal Celibidache at work. So much passion, I miss his shows. Sa te odihnesti in pace, Maestre! Esti nemuritor pentru noi.
he was, but paid one.

I think the tumb downs came from beings playing brainlessly over the keyboard.
Great performance not only the orchestra also the conductor whao!!! he really lives every note and its visible in his expression.
I believe that all conductor Love The conducting the Bolero but by far this is the best I have seen
You can see his spirit, his eyes, his mind dance with the notes. Brilliant.🕉️
around 10-12 minutes, he's not conducting the music, he has become the music .Look at the absolute joy in his face :) If god were to say "Sergiu, come to heaven and be with me forever and ever." I am sure he would reply, "just a minute god, I'm busy."
Best coment EVER!!! IN DEED!!!
That's from around 00:00 My friend! He Is Not "playing" he Is "played". Have a noice day!
He channels the divine vibration so that us mortals can hear. 💗
de imi curg lacrimile cand ascult asa ceva? ce vina am eu ca mai exista suflet in mine... melodia asta vrea sa o aud cand ma duc in rai , sau in partea opusa :)
A few years ago, thanks to Celibidache, I've fallen in a mad love with Bolero!
I adore his version!!!

Magnificent....I love watching him as he puts so much feeling into his conducting...❤🎶
I had to replay the video several times to be able to focus on the orchestra because on the first couple of views I couldn't take my eyes off Celibidache. Such a stage presence that he had, absolutely magnetic.
But you can't see the orchestra, just a few glimpses from behind. What an embarrassing ego trip.
Body ,gestures ,hands ,eye ,movement of the body all tell the story of this magic Bolero "by Ravel!Astonishing!Thank you!
He is full of emotions evoked by music. The movement of his body, the expression of his face and the rhythmic movements of his hands are driven by the emotions. this is music, Emotions...Emotions send the messages to the brain...

He's making perfect eye contact with his orchestra with every section and he's totally totally awesome.
After listening and watching twice, I removed the sound and watched, only with the inner music, the movements with which he would bring each instrument, his hand, his glance, his body. Oh! mon dieu! I'm sure that's what Ravel intended to tell us, and he surely did through Sergiu's body and soul. Merci, Merci, Merci!
Thank you for such an insightful comment
