  • Sketched between 1925 and 1949, Enescu's Caprice roumain pour violon et orchestre will, ultimately, be left unfinished. Almost half a century later, part of the sketches for the unfinished work were found among the composer's manuscripts at the George Enescu Museum in Bucharest. At the insistance of violinist Sherban Lupu, an enthusiast interpreter of Enescu's music, the composer Cornel Ţăranu took up the challenge to complete and orchestrate the work. After years of piecing together the available material originating from different sources (including the George Enescu Museum, the National Library of Romania and the Library of the Romanian Academy) Cornel Ţăranu was able to complete the work, and the Caprice Roumain was given its premiere as a four-movement extended composition for violin and orchestra in 1997, with Sherban Lupu as soloist.
Similar in manner with Enescu's third violin sonata (dans le caractère populaire roumain), the Caprice Roumain pays homage to the romanian folk fiddler (lăutar), presenting (in the writing for the violin part) all the lăutar's characteristic wealth of tonal effects. The work also evokes, with a certain feeling of nostalgia, the moldavian lands of the composer's childhood, lands which, after his exile following the ascent of the communist party in Romania, he was never to see again.

    [3] Lento 15:14
    [4] Allegro molto 21:28

I’m born and grew up in Romania, am familiar with Enescu’s music, studied it, I thought I new everything about him, but listening these unfinished pieces, arranged postmortem, I simply cry, identifying myself with his roots, the old Romanian folklore and the Romanian soul in exile. His music touch my deep, deep feelings and great love for my country. Thanks and appreciations to the performers and those who did the recordings. Eugenia, California Sept 2nd, 2021

Glad to have found this work on You Tube. As far as our two local classical music stations are concerned, Enescu was a one-work composer.

The last time I listened to a classical radiostation was about fourty years ago, when I started to build my own collection of classical and other music. But indeed, UT is the station I listen now most. And Roumanian music has always been one of my favorites. Happy listening.

I would maintain that Enescu's five symphonies--the last two completed after his death--are probably the greatest symphonic accomplishment of the 20th century. Each is bold in conception and expression, masterfully accomplished, and absolutely distinctive, with a different dramaturgy and expressive world for each.
And his chamber music is magnificent as well, above all the 3rd Violin Sonata, 2nd Cello Sonata, both Piano Quartets, and the Piano Quintet. Each work is at the summit for 20th century chamber music.
The songs that have been recorded are also magnificent, especially the Clement Marot set. And Oedipe is one of the greatest operas of the century.
His accomplishments defy reason. He was also one of the greatest violinist of the century, a magnificent conductor, a brilliant pianist, and a professional-level cellist. Evidently he had all of the standard symphonic repertory, including all of Wagner's repertory operas, memorized. And he could sing beautifully as well.
