Neil Finn and his brother Tim founded the band "Split Enz" here in New Zealand. When they split up Neil went to Straylia and founded Crowded House. You missed the end off this video but this was their final performance and their final song that they would play together before dis-banding. Neil has since gone on to perform with Fleetwood Mac who do perform some of Neils songs also.
To be fair, Crowded House disbanding is about as believable as Farnham's final tour. They always get back together again. They've even had more than one of these "Final Performance at the Opera House". Not that I'm complaining - Neil and Crowded House are some of my favourite artists.
Neil was not a founding member of Split Enz, he replaced former guitarist Phil Judd, who went on to form The Swingers, and had a hit here in Australia with Counting The Beat. Paul Hester was also in Split Enz, so it was just a case of adding bassist Nick Seymour. Later, a keyboard player was added and Tim popped in and out of the band. I feel many reaction channel make a mistake by not paying any attention to Tim's solo stuff. Staring At The Embers, Through The Years and Fraction Too Much Friction were great, and Made My Day is one of the most uplifting songs you will ever hear!
I saw Crowded House live around 1990 in a fairly small venue on a college campus and it is to date one of the best shows I can remember. They are stellar musicians.
This is one of those standout songs. FWIW, if you have a convertible top, you can easily have a hole in it. A deluge is a big flood - like Noah's - which you can't catch in a paper cup. The song is about not giving up, delivered in the context of a relationship where people object to them being together, like Romeo & Juliet, rich family v poor family, etc.
Watching the music video I got a different take on the song. I got that it was about the old world keeping a wall ( a literal wall in the case of the Berlin wall) around the younger generations to keep the status quo going. Black v White. East v West. Rich v Poor...ect. All to detract from what the globalist are really up to. Witch is still going on today.
The deluge in a paper cup line is a nod to John Lennon and Across the Universe, where he sings “words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup”
Crowded House lead singer Neil Finn wrote this song. He explained in an interview with Goldmine: "I wrote that on my brother's piano. I'm not sure if I remember what the context was, exactly, but it was just about on the one hand feeling kind of lost, and on the other hand sort of urging myself on: Don't dream it's over. That one actually fell out literally, without me thinking about it too much." Definitions of deluge. a heavy rain. synonyms: cloudburst, downpour, pelting, soaker, torrent, waterspout. Peace out.
Neil Finn is an iconic Kiwi musician who has travelled with many band groups since the seventies. He has been acknowledged as one of the best song writers of his era. He has been performing with Fleetwood Mac over the last few years. Crowded House is an Australasian group based mainly in Australia. They were loved by fans on both sides of the Tasman Sea. PS Stan also does a great version of this song. Great reaction Britt 😀 ("Fall at Your Feet" @ Sydney Opera House)
Crowded House is a great band. They did many great hits. You can’t go wrong with Fall at Your Feet, Weather With you, Distant Sun, World where you live.
The band called it a day during a tour in the US. They played one last concert on the steps of the Sydney Opera House. This is the final song from that concert. The last time they would ever play together. The emotions are apparent in the band and the crowd
It always breaks my heart seeing this concert and especially this song at the end with Paul in tears at the start of the song. He died a little that day, and i believe this toke a huge part in his depression and subsequent death years later
Crowded House are a rock band, formed in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, in 1985 - Its founding members were New Zealander Neil Finn (singer and gutarist)
Paul Mcartney called Neil Finn one of the greatest songwriters ever. Pretty big compliment from a Beatle 😊 the greatest hits album is 19 absolutely great songs. It’s called reoccurring dream. Also check out “better be home soon” 👍🏻

Brilliant band and song! Neil was in Fleetwood Mac for their recent tour! One of the best vocalist and songwriter ever! Crowded House are considered an Australian band, but Neil Finn is New Zealand! His first band with his brother Tom was Split Enz and are fantastically quirky with many brilliant songs!
Crowded house are also very much considered a New Zealand band, the most important member - the co-founder singer song writer and guitarist of the band is a New Zealander and Crowded House was formed from the ruins of New Zealand band Split Enz breaking up, its quite hard to justify calling it an Australian band.
@@howardkip99 yet we do! I agree with all you say, but 2/3 Australians, formed in Australia and the industry recognises them as Australian. Based on what you are saying is ACDC Scottish? The picks on the stand is so that incase there is a problem (drops pick, pick breaks, or whatever happens) there is always extra picks on hand immediately and the song has the smallest amount of interruption. That's why they all do it.
This was from the 80's and was super popular ❤ Paul Carrack wrote it and his is a fantastic rabbit hole to go down! He was in Squeeze, Mike + The Mechanics and wrote for alot of artists, including The Eagles.
Have to agree with oblongsquare here... Carrack wrote some great songs, but this is pure Neil Finn. (I'm not aware of any Crowded House songs being written by Paul Carrack although, thinking about it, I can see how there's a bit of shared sensibility between Carrack and Finn when it comes to song lyrics.)
Guitar picks on the mic stand - they are incase you drop them / throw them out into the crowd etc but they will all be the same pick (brand, shape. thickness, 'model'). But yes different picks will slightly effect the tone but more how you play, most guitarist will have specific picks they like to use cause its comfortable / suits their playing style
This is, I believe, from their farewell concert. If I recall correctly, the band disbanded after this concert. You can see at least one of them is playing with tears in his eyes. A "deluge" is a sudden flood.
This is a classic ‘80’s song, Britt. Check out the official video. Nothing wrong with the live performance but the official video has what we heard on the radio back then. Love this song.
Crowded House were always very "stream of consciousness" in their songs ~ this particular song is about sticking together, facing the challenges of everyday life, "they" being e.g. pressure from the family, a bad boss, a deadbeat job, not being where you want to be in life. As you picked up on, their name is very unassuming ~ Crowded House's songs were always about living a regular "little" life (and not being ashamed of it) ~ as opposed to most music today, which is always about being a star, wearing bling, and making it big (not actually a life most people will live). You are allowed to feel overwhelmed in your "little" non-winner regular life with Crowded House ~ they offer you comfort and even guidance in how to get through being a regular person living a regular life. It's very human - and humanE, in a sense - music. ✌😉
Actually, when they were struggling musicians, the band shared a small residence. Hence the name, Crowded House. I've seen them live and they are, basically, the "Australian Beatles" ...
Them is anyone who stands in the way of the dream or puts up obstacles to it. A deluge is a flood, hence very hard to catch in a cup. The band formed in Australia but the lead singer and his brother are from New Zealand.
People put guitar picks on mic stands, so they are easy to grab. You can quickly grab a pick if you drop one, or you can throw them to the crowd. Neil doesn't strike me as the kind of person who throws guitar picks often. Crowded House was a band that was well respected but just couldn't really break big in the USA. This song was a huge hit though and was all over the radio. There's no question that it was their biggest song. I'm pretty sure that their drummer quit a few months before this, but came back for it. This was their final show. It was a big deal, and they were obviously loved in Australia. They did reunite in the early 2000's, but their drummer had passed away by then. They still tour with a different lineup.
Just take yourself down the Crowded House rabbit hole. Chocolate Cake, Weather With You, Better be Home Sonn, Something So Strong, Mean to Me, Now We're Getting Somewhere, Sister Madly, Fall at Your Feet, It's Only Natural. All good, all different.
To answer your question about the picks, they're most likely just extras. Picks get lost all the time and many times, artists will throw their picks out to the audience as souvenirs. Also, while some picks do have a different sound, guitarist don't usually change the type of picks to get different sounds. Usually they just have a thickness and material they like and they just stick to that. For a future video, I'd recommend checking out Something So Strong! This is definitely my favorite of theirs, but that one is a close second.
It wasn't until they featured it on the TV mini series "The Stand," that I came to appreciate this song. In fairness, it was the perfect song for the story.
Very nostalgic, loved it from day 1. Sweet, sweet song. 💜 edit: you cracked me up, your train was on the right track but it was going pretty slow for awhile. Haha.
I looked up these lyrics 39 years ago .. when I saw them perform this live. deluge ( dell - luge ) : heavy rainfall or flooding .. not catching that in a paper cup. He is a mesmerizing singer !! Amazing song 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 I saw them in Tampa , Florida.
One of the great songs from our generation. It has meaning for any angsty, rebellious, free-spirited, footloose, worried teenager. Us against the world. Also - listen to the studio cut.
“It was one of those songs that came largely in one go, which doesn’t happen very often and is usually a good sign. In a sense, it was a private message from me to someone who was withdrawing from their world.” ~ Neil Finn ... So we probably can't really know what the song is about and just get to enjoy those luscious vocals and dreamy instrumentation.
A beautiful coming of age song from way back when . The one verse was about a newspaper ehere the headlines were of war and waste but she just wanted to see what was on tv today. British and Australian newspapers used to have a TV page IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS.Assie crowds love to sing along .
I remember hearing this song a lot on the radio when it first came out, but I don't think I really felt what it was about until I saw it in the Stephen King mini-series The Stand with Gary Sinise and Molly Ringwald. There is a scene where two of the characters dance together while this song plays. They are trying to comfort each other because everyone else in their town has died. It is a very poignant moment. It is about not letting the obstacles in life get in between two people who care for each other. "We know that they won't win." Love in life is worth fighting for. I have loved the song ever since.
Crowed House is from Australia. Two members are brothers Neil and Tim Finn. Neil had a solo career. On his album One Neil Wendy & Lisa from Prince’s band the Revolution are playing and singing on all songs
Long time guitar player here. And yeah it's pretty standard during live performance to use a pick holder on the mic stand. And yeah different kinds of picks have different effects but usually there is a certain pick that you prefer and you just have a bunch of them up there. Of course it's handy if you drop one but it really serves another purpose, which is every once in a while you flip the pick out into the audience with a flourish, and then either play with your fingers for a bit or immediately grab another pick and keep going. It's just a ritual of live performance for many many years now.
This is brilliant song writing. It reminds memory the structure in the Phil Collins song, "In The Air Tonight". It's going to mean something different to everyone who hears it. It's never overt but always evocative.
It's a song about life's ups and downs. About apathy, hope, fear, love, perseverance. About forging ahead even when things seem impossible , bleak. It's not about fantasy and delusion. It's about the harsh reality of life. Things not going right. Things not turning out how you expect them. In the face of it all, the darkness, shadows, there is still light somewhere at the end of it all...
DEL yooj, or sometimes pronounced: duh LOOJ DAY looj. a: an overflowing of the land by water b: a drenching rain "a deluge causing mudslides in the area" 2: an overwhelming amount or number "received a deluge of angry phone calls"
I miss the old days when these reaction videos were all abouth the song with 2 or 3 interruptions. Now it's all about the reactor and their life's story, sermonizing, and ability to kill the groove.
A deluge (del-uge) is a downpour, a flood. Usually applied to rainfall, but can be applied to other things. For example, if you advertise a high paid job, you might receive a deluge of applications.
'They' is life and all the things that can get in between a couple in a relationship... a very talented song writer. Their best work 'I feel' is the album 'Together Alone.' it is a masterpiece, Neil says the best song he ever wrote, is Private Universe on that album, but Distance Sun was the hit off it. Give it a whirl, its gold.
Sir Paul McCartney is quoted as saying: "I wish I could write music like Neil Finn" - and he is a huge fan. You cut the video off too soon. Context...this was their final song of their final concert farewell... Don't dream it's over, so it was emotional especially for the crowd there. 💡Always play em out 👍
If you liked this song, try checking out The Dream Academy's "Life in a Northern Town" or "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want". Same time period (mid-80's) roughly and I always thought the songs gave me the same dreamy vibe.
neil finn is a well-known nz singer - originally from split enz a nz group his brother tim formed in the 70s and then neil formed his aussie band crowded house in melbourne in the 80s
Split Enz (New Zealand) and Crowded House (Australia) were great. I remember watching a full concert on UA-cam and loved all the familiar songs coming by, like Weather With You.
Another Kiwi - (New Zealander). That’s why he sings in a relaxed fashion. Like Stan Walker who covered this song- which you also loved by the way. 80’s song
I feel like this song was everywhere for a few years. Nice rich sound, chill, but even though I've heard it a thousand times, I have no idea what it's about! That one high note creates a really nice hook. Catching heavy rain in a paper cup would be hard - like digging a hole with a teaspoon.
Nah... there you go claiming another Kiwi gem..😄 The true word is Australasian, or you could say ANZAC as this band was formed by Neil Finn (NZ) & Australians Paul Hester, Nick Seymour, plus American Mark Hart. Yes they played the majority of their music in Australia. Crowded House are still active with 3 Kiwis - Neil Finn, & sons Liam & Elroy Finn, Australian Nick Seymour & American Mitchell Froom.
The picks on the mic stand has a purpose. Picks can, and do wear out during a concert. You can also have different types of picks on the stand for different styles of play. It also allows you ready access to extra picks so you can randomly chuck a pick into the crowd and grab a new one. really makes the crowd react.
On the pick thing... Yeah, when playing, especially on a high-energy song, you can have picks flip out of your hand, so having extras where you can grab them in an instant and not lose the rhythm of the song is invaluable.
Britt, Britt, Britt! I f you only knew the abundant treasures that await you if you dig deeper. You'd hear the best music of the 80s and 90s has to offer. See songs like Fall at your Feet, Private Universe, I Feel Possessed (my favorite), Four Seasons in one Day, Weather with You, Something so Strong........ you'd have reactions for days with tons of hits. AND you'd get a million more views with their Split Enz and solo stuff. YOu cannot go wrong with this band.
I think it's something like: While the world around us straddles between grasping materialism and gluttony (catching deluge in paper cup) and outright hopelessness (turn to the TV page), I want us to chart a path that remains balanced and pure (liberation and relief). Or something like that.
guitarists want a bunch of picks handy because they drop them as well as they get worn places in them from the guitar strings....so they need to quickly have access to the next one.....some players go thru2 dozen a night.....some throw a lot out to the fans as they have the picks personalized with their names and logos.....
I put Neil Finn in the league with Lennon and McCarthy (the Beatles) as a lyricist and songwriter. Crowded House produced some of the best, most creative pop music of the past 40 years. (And they're still at it.) My wife and I have a Crowded House song that's "ours," but it's "Italian Plastic."
Neil is great so only another 229 sings and he matches the number written by Lennon/McCartney and, yes, that does include a few by George Harrison(Something,Here Comes The Sun, While My Guitar Gently Weeps) etc:)
@@zoeherriot its neil finns band regardless you can moan about semantics all you like but ultimately it was always neils band and is now his family band
There are SO many great Crowded House tracks to list off, my fave would be Pineapple Head but everybody has already suggested their most popular hits - it’s a biiiig and very enjoyable rabbit hole to delve into - and then there’s Split Enz, if you can find Neil doing a live acoustic solo version of Message To My Girl on the piano, your ears will thank you! Absolutely love this band and Neil Finn, saw CH live in November 2022 and they are aging like a fine wine! 👌🏻
I've been offline (ill) for awhile. Happy to come back to your little channel... and one of my favorite songs! Carry on! (del-yooj is a large amount of water or rain. Like a flood)
Hey Brit, the thing about songs like this is that the lyrics mean what they mean to you alone. A good example is the Jimi Hendrix version of "All Along the Watchtower" by Bob Dylan. Who knows what that is about, but you cannot stop listening. Love your work ♥from Australia.
Once u get your head around the lyrics then Stan walkers rendition with his vocals will knock Ur socks of especially transitioning into mauri which is new Zealand's native tongue
Crowded House were Split Enz in the 80's and definitely worth a reaction - check out MESSAGE TO MY GIRL by Split Enz - it is their Don't Dream is Over of the 80's :-D
Yes, those extra picks on the mic stand is for when you accidentally drop the one you're using. Ideally you'd be able to quickly grab a new one, so it doesn't affect your performance. Drummers typically have something similar for sticks.

@1:50 - Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup - Deluge means "A Severe Flood". Yes, they are from Australia.
This is still one of my favorite 80s songs ever! These guys are legendary! As a child of the 80s this is nostalgia personified!

I really like most of your reactions. This is the kind of song that's easier to appreciate when listened to more than one line at a time though :)
Crowed House is from Australia. Two members are brothers Neil and Tim Finn. Neil had a solo career. On his album One Neil Wendy & Lisa from Prince’s band the Revolution are playing and singing on all songs
Not Australia - New Zealand AND Australia... lead singer is a Kiwi.
Both Tim and Neil Finn are New Zealanders
.band brothers younger his was It .House Crowded in never was Tim
One of the all time great 80's songs...
Love that Gibson Gold Top he's playing.
You should listen to something so strong from Crowded House
love them so much! the very first time i heard this song i went out and bought this album! 1986 in Japan! life was good!
Good memories here, i was a senior in highschool when this came out
It's a song about life's ups and downs.
DEL yooj, or sometimes pronounced:
duh LOOJ
DAY looj.
a: an overflowing of the land by water
b: a drenching rain
"a deluge causing mudslides in the area"
2: an overwhelming amount or number
"received a deluge of angry phone calls"
I miss the old days when these reaction videos were all abouth the song with 2 or 3 interruptions. Now it's all about the reactor and their life's story, sermonizing, and ability to kill the groove.
I like how British Guitarist Analyses ...does it.
@@fm6419 Yes. He actually analyzes and breaks it down in its musical sense & components.
@@Coowallsky he also allows us to watch the whole thing through
A deluge (del-uge) is a downpour, a flood. Usually applied to rainfall, but can be applied to other things. For example, if you advertise a high paid job, you might receive a deluge of applications.
This song always makes me think of Stephen King's 'The Stand" movie (1994). Love this!!
Watched it not long ago ,remember it from the series on TV from 94, still crazy as hell 😂😂😂😂😂
💡Always play em out 👍
Neil's voice.. That is the Enzed accent, and we are all very calming like that. Straight up. P. S ignore the Strayan dissenters. 🤙
If you liked this song, try checking out The Dream Academy's "Life in a Northern Town" or "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want". Same time period (mid-80's) roughly and I always thought the songs gave me the same dreamy vibe.
Please Please is Smiths? Am I wrong?
Crowded House is a great band. Check out their other songs
it's called .. God given Talent..............
neil finn is a well-known nz singer - originally from split enz a nz group his brother tim formed in the 70s and then neil formed his aussie band crowded house in melbourne in the 80s
Split Enz (New Zealand) and Crowded House (Australia) were great. I remember watching a full concert on UA-cam and loved all the familiar songs coming by, like Weather With You.
The official video to this song is absolutely amazing..
They have some crazy good sings in their back catalogue, like a warm cup of hot chocolate
Couldn't agree more!
Crowded House is from Australia
Nah... there you go claiming another Kiwi gem..😄 The true word is Australasian, or you could say ANZAC as this band was formed by Neil Finn (NZ) & Australians Paul Hester, Nick Seymour, plus American Mark Hart.
The song is about believing in yourself and not giving up.
This is about... "Hey you, Don't Dream this Thing Between Us is Over", they come to build a wall between us but we know they won't win"...
Crowded House is a New Zealand band. Pls also check out the cover of this song by Maori (New Zealand native people) artist Stan Walker.
On the pick thing...
Yeah, when playing, especially on a high-energy song, you can have picks flip out of your hand, so having extras where you can grab them in an instant and not lose the rhythm of the song is invaluable.
Picks do break and having them taped on the mic stand (or taped on the guitar itself) is a convenient place to grab one quickly just in case.
He is from New Zealand, and the rest of the Band is from Australia.
Thanks, Britt! A gorgeous song... (also, the fact that they could do this LIVE)... like that you got the lyrics... appreciate your reaction...
This is top 5 of my all time favorite songs. Great song writing!
If I get a call in my car and this is playing I hang up and call back lol
Our relationship is stronger than the world around us.
I will say, when reacting to older songs, always go with the music video!! Give the ultimate vibe and throwback!
I put Neil Finn in the league with Lennon and McCarthy (the Beatles) as a lyricist and songwriter. Crowded House produced some of the best, most creative pop music of the past 40 years. (And they're still at it.)
My wife and I have a Crowded House song that's "ours," but it's "Italian Plastic."
Paul McCartney himself has praised Neil's songwriting calling him one of the greatest songwriters alive.
Neil is great so only another 229 sings and he matches the number written by Lennon/McCartney and, yes, that does include a few by George Harrison(Something,Here Comes The Sun, While My Guitar Gently Weeps) etc:)
@Isleofskye he's written 277 songs according to spotify. From mid 70s till now. The Beatles weren't actually together for very long.
Check out the studio version and video. It's a good watch
deluge is a big flood ..I concur ...cracking song amongst their catalogue of songs ...love CH
He’s a New Zealander (just like Stan Walker). Group is Australian
neil is crowded house regardless who is backing him up - CH was a nz/aussie band and now just a nz band as he has his sons as his backing now
@@bodybalanceU2 Not really, Nick Seymour is still in the band as is Mitchel Froom (who is American).
@@zoeherriot its neil finns band regardless you can moan about semantics all you like but ultimately it was always neils band and is now his family band
A deluge (DEL-yooj) is a massive rain, usually resulting in a flood.
🔵A is express. 🔵C is local. I’m not sure about the E, but that has different terminals at each end. 😊
I've been offline (ill) for awhile. Happy to come back to your little channel... and one of my favorite songs! Carry on!
(del-yooj is a large amount of water or rain. Like a flood)
Released my high school senior year, it was huge and all over the radio.
Crowded House are from New Zealand. Love this band and have seen them live.
Now you've GOT to see Stan Walker covering this. It's GORGEOUS ❤❤❤
Overwhelm with a flood.
"caravans were deluged by the heavy rains"
