I usually cook with a canteen cup and stove. Tricks I have learned. 1. I use an Esbit alcohol burner or a pop can burner. The pop can burner I use is a penny style rather than a double wall. It is also very short so as to not take up space. 2. Canteen cup lids are not all created equal. Rothco typically makes their lids to fit their own cups which are non standard sized. Go with G.A.K. or Pathfinder. 3. Yes, most of your heat is coming out of the side vents. To avoid this, reverse the direction the canteen cup sits on the stove. This allows venting through the top and up the sides of the cup and is actually more efficient. 4. Only use the stove hooked to the bottom if you are cooking in a fire.
Two words: Trangia burner! It will direct the heat, have no trouble staying alight, there are cheap and efficient copies and it's more fuel efficient. I'm British, well Scottish and i bought the lid for my bcb cookset from a veteran who makes them. It is a good set up and works well with sticks too. You were asking a lot from that wee Altoids tin brother lol. A hobo stove made from two soda cans should work equally well too. Good luck, stick with it. 🏴
GREAT TO HEAR FROM YOU BROTHER! The Trangia is a little tall, but I could easily dig a wee bit of a hole to nest it in. I have wanted one of the BCB Crusader Cook sets (Mk I and II) for quite a while now but shipping costs has made the purchase too expensive. As I was doing some follow-up research inspired by the comments on this video, I discovered MRE Mountain, here in the U.S. now sells BOTH. I really like what I've seen of them, especially the Mk II stove. I think I'll get myself both for my birthday😉👍 Thanks for the tip Brother!
@@boonedockery7220 always good to see you work. You ideally want the Mk1 cup with the Mk2 stove on the bcb but the Mk2 cup is ok. They were a serious game changer for us. Enjoy and don't forget to post a video. You stay safe and happy brother, hope the family are all well. 🏴
Take a G.I. canteen. Put it in the cup. Run a wide Sharpie around it. Cut CAREFULLY through the top of the mark. A hacksaw works, but take your time so as to cut as straight as possible. A band saw is best, if you have one available. This gives you a cup/ insert with a lip about 1/8 inch higher than the cup. Inverted, it will fit over the canteen and cup. Now, this will not fit the G.I. pouch, but neither will the Crusader. Mine rides in a Field Line MOLLE type utility pouch. Room left for fuel, lighter, etc. I'd like to know where your flea market is!
This is exactly how I spend too much money on research and development of my ideas gone awry. I tell myself "Well, it's only a couple of bucks so no big loss if it doesn't work out." Then I keep chasing the bear til it eats me and I have spent 3/4ths the value of something ready made that I should have bought in the first place because I'm really not pleased with how my "Rube Goldberg" has turned out.

Brother John, another home run video. I own a bunch of camping stoves but no canteen stoves. Don't think I've missed anything. You did A bang up job of showing us the deficiencies of the canteen style stoves and I for one appreciate it. Keep up the good work and I see the channel growing. Blessings, Daavid.
It worked very well with the large Esbit Tabs and my small titanium alcohol burner. I was really wanting it to work with my Altoids tin burner. I really like that thing!
My first observation is that you should probably measure the distance between the fire source and cup on the esbit stove, and compare it to the same distance on the canteen setup. Alcohol takes a relatively short distance because it burns cooler. I believe the distance should be about an inch and a half separation between the fuel and the cup; correct me if I'm wrong. To me, the distance in the video appears to be more than 2 inches. If so, one fix might be to trim off the bottom of the wind shield/stand, making it shorter (and lighter), and doing a retest. Just saying. Disclaimer: I'm definitely no expert.
Thank You Very Much For Sharing Your Tips Through Experience! I have received quite a few helpful comments that I will be implementing in future experiments, so the stove isn't completely dead yet, just in ICU!😄😅😆👍
It’s a twig stove, turn the stove either perpendicular to the Canteen Cup or so it doesn’t “lock up” and easily remove from the stove. The stove also works great with banking coals from the Campfire when the cup is “locked on”
Thanks for the tips! I have received a few helpful comments that I will be implementing in future experiments, so the stove isn't completely dead yet, just in ICU!😄😅😆👍
I used a similar setup back in the 1980's while serving in the Army, using military heat tabs with no problems. When the tabs ran out, the stove allowed for a tig fire underneath the cup.
That’s right! Turn the canteen cup sideways on stove and use military heat tabs or the Coghlans tabs. Take that foil off the stove. That water be boiling in just a few minutes.😂
If you place tent pegs on top of stove will boill as is more of a chimney and draw the heat to the pot not out holes. Or look at bcb British army kit put carbon felt in stove can stay there and use alcohol works fantastic .
Try using sticks with the USGI canteen cup stove, that is what I use to boil water all the time. That large opening on the side allows feeding of twigs into the fire. It also works to attach the stove onto the cup and sit it on top of hot coals from a campfire. And BTW, the Rothco lids only fit the Rothco cups.
Yep. They were built to heat coffee and coco from the old C rations/MCI's or heat the canned meat, etc, with one hex tab. If you want to boil water and such, you used two or more tabs, or augment with twigs and such. Works fine.
You are correct. the surface area against height of column. It doesn't work. Fuel tabs were free. I ALWAYS used two at a time. I used 4 of them every second day while on exercise just to boil water for a full-on spongebath. My fire-team partner didn't do that, so I used his cup and canteen as well. The absolute LUXURY of a full Litre of boiled water to bathe I indescribable! I have never been able to duplicate that with any other solid fuel except wood pellets. Twigs don't work because feeding them is difficult. Liquid fuels like propane or naphtha worked well, but then you didn't need the "stove." My Trangia and even my popcan alcohol stoves worked, but they hold WAY more than 3 tbsps of alcohol. Now, you have me thinking, though ... would the canteen stove act as an efficient windscreen for my BRS-3000 butane stove? To the super coop, Fred!!
I had to put a small pot stand on top of the burner which create more draw air flow. I do think the stove was designed very well it does work to a degree but my idea definitely helped. It works better with my trangia burner than a small fire
Don't know why it took me so long to come across your channel. But luckily for me, I did, and just subbed. You have some mighty fine content Brother! 👍
I cooked with it differently. I raised the cup above the stove so the flame can also touch the sides. I notched the top of the stove and used 2 tentpegs so they do not move. The ideal flame height to cup is one inch with alcohol and a windscreen is very advisable.
Something ive found that works with the canteen system for boiling water is the hell fire bushcraft stove. simply find a tree, clear off the ground where you plan to build a small fire, saw a small knotch in the base of the tree and wedge the stove at a desired height, set your canteen on that bad boy and you'll have boiling water in no time. You can also cook on it directly only issue is its not a self contained system like what you were hoping for but thats my advice. Keep at it love the content 👌
I have a USGI canteen cup (I use it for basically everything on a daily basis). I wanted to make a cook set based on it so I went online and I found that the German company MFH produces a canteen cup lid. I ordered one. When I got it, it was a bit dinged in 2 spots but I bent it back with pliers and it fits a bit snug but that's fine for me. I use it with an esbit stove and beer can alcohol burners.
I've yet to use/experiment with heating/boiling using alcohol. What I did do is melt a handful of candles and pour the wax into an Altoids "box" with 4 wicks. And with the ambient temperature of 60° F, I was able to get a low boil with a half full stainless canteen cup in roughly 12 minutes. Two of the Altoids candle boxes will heat your tent fairly decently without fumes or setting your gear alight.
What if you find a way to raise your altoid alcohol burner up closer to the canteen pot? I feel like there’s too much space between the altoid alcohol burner and the pot. These I’ve typically seen people use twigs and small branches under for burning, not the denatured alcohol. Curious if you try that.
I could use the Altoid's tin lid to lift it a bit. I have received quite a few helpful comments that I will be implementing in future experiments, so the stove isn't completely dead yet, just in ICU!😄😅😆👍
Seems the “Rothco” canteen cup lids only fit the Rothco canteen cups. (What I’ve found from watching other UA-camr’s reviews) I ended up using a “Pathfinder School Canteen cup lid and stove with my Nalgene Canteen in the same style canteen cover but I added “D” rings added to the Mollie straps on the back and added a shoulder strap to carry it. I also have added a “French Army” canteen stove to use solid fuel tabs and make the whole system more versatile. I also added a folding panel style wind screen. Keep up the good work! 😃👍
After reading through the comments, the Nalgene Canteen is on my list. Great idea adding the d-rings! I'll have to check out the "French Army" canteen stove. I usually use a wind screen but I wanted to see how it would do without one. I have received a few helpful comments that I will be implementing in future experiments, so the stove isn't completely dead yet, just in ICU!😄😅😆👍
The top heaviness combined with the cup sticking in the stove when it's cold has shied me away from this set up. I'm still pretty dang happy with my small titanium setup that nests a large pot, cup, fuel canister, tin foil shield, mini lighter and pocket rocket...all the size of a nalgene bottle. Thank you as always for your amazing reviews!
Wow John, Brother you did get a steal of a deal on those canteen sets 😳 Can’t believe, though I do believe ya 😉 the difficulty with heating up water in the canteen cup 🤔 I have always had pretty good results with my setup like that but use a large sardine/herring can for my alcohol container or else a regular wood fire 🔥 in the Stove. Always enjoy your content Brother and ALWAYS a blessing to see ya and the info you share ❤️🔥🙏🏻🤟🏻☝🏻🕊️💯
I absolutely loved watching this video! Thank you for posting it. It’s like brain candy for this military surplus kit nerd! Your experiments did not produce your desired result, but are in no way fails. You learned some things and shared that knowledge gain; so, “win-win!” I for one appreciate the fruits of that effort. I did a similar experiment with alcohol stoves some months ago using the Trangia Spirit burner and the Pathfinder alcohol stove (first version with wind screen). The test measured the boil time of 16 oz. of room temperature tap water with each stove in a different configuration (a) US GI canteen stove, (b) Pathfinder Burner with attached wind screen and (c) Trangia burner with FireBox titanium Nano stove. What I learned from that was the heat efficiency (within those test controls) was determined by the distance between the flame and surface of the covered container. The sweet spot being about 1-1/4”. Any closer and you achieve more of a “simmer”. Any further and you’re just too far away to achieve any real heat efficienc. Anyway, this is all fun stuff! So thank you for taking us along on your bushcraft experiment! Also wanted to tell you that I carry on my daily pack two of your patches, courtesy of Jason Hunt at CampCraft Outdoors. The Tetelestai and the Chi Rho. As a 58 yr old Christian wife, mother and grandmother, the meaning behind those patches and their true significance are very important to me. And as such, your personal ministry is being shared with others in rural Indiana. Just wanted to say Thank you for that!
Sister, Thank you for this comment and sharing your stove/burner data. I will be doing a little measuring from now on. Yet another positive from a failed experiment! I learn so much from the comments. I really need to keep a journal about all of the great information folks have shared with me. You truly blessed my heart by sharing that you have a couple of my patches and how you came by them. I anoint and pray over them before I send them out. I truly believe the mark of a successful ministry is not in the immediate response, but where it travels from there and who and how it touches. I am grateful to you for sharing this. I pray you have a blessed week!
Observations based on my own experiments over the years are as follows: 1) if you want heavy duty tin foil for a wind break or other projects, dollar store cooking tins work awesome. 2)the Rothco lid fits the cups they make, there are actual lids that fit the USGI cup, you need to make sure what you are getting. 3)the distance is too great between the cup and the stove/fuel. 4)covering the holes of the canteen cup stove actually inhibits the burn, use a wind screen made of foil as both of these fuel sources are susceptible to a breeze. 5)both of these methods will boil water in a canteen cup once you get it sorted. 6)you aren't done experimenting yet!
Thank You Very Much For Sharing Your Tips Through Experience! I have received quite a few helpful comments that I will be implementing in future experiments, so the stove isn't completely dead yet, just in ICU!😄😅😆👍
@@boonedockery7220 if I remember right the sweet spot for most alcohol stoves is just under an inch for best performance. You could measure the distance between the cup and the perlite burner when using the esbit stove and that should give you a good starting point. Personally, I use fire rope (same as off a wood stove) in my little esbit burners and really like it. They are insanely susceptible to any breeze though, which is where the windscreen comes in-often secured to the ground with wire type tent pegs.
Take a hammer and a 2 by 4 and beat the lid flat. LOL, it works. You don't want a tight seal unless you're pressure cooking. Another hack is to put an old canteen in the cup. Now mark a line with a wide Sharpy all the way round. Carefully cut just above the line. You now have a cup insert/ bowl. Keeps the cup clean, and saved your lips. The new insert can be inverted onto the canteen ala the Crusader. Needs a bigger pouch though.
The Rothco Canteen Cup, and Lid are slightly different than the USGI Canteen Cup. The Self Reliance Outfitters Pathfinder Canteen Cup Lid is a perfect fit for the USGI Canteen Cup. You can modify the Rothco Canteen Cup Lid by bending the lip of the cup to fit the USGI Cup. I recently learned that you can remove the handle from the Rothco Cup drill to holes for a bail and use it as a Mini Bush Pot. The Rothco will nest inside of the USGI Cup after removing the handle. I use the BCB MK-ll Crusader Stove with a Trangia B24 Alcohol Burner. I modified the stove to accommodate the use of a Pathfinder 25oz Cup. The USGI Cup fits perfectly. The Crusader MK l doesn’t fit the Trangia Burner because of the height, the USGI Stove doesn’t fit for the same reason unless you raise the stove to get it above the Trangia Burner.
Hi, Blackie Thomas uses the canteen stove as a twig stove with success. He has a couple videos showing it in use.. Wonder if two fuel tabs would create enough heat. Nalgene makes army style canteens that look pretty good. Thanks for showing what doesn’t work.
Good video man. The stove is WW2 reissue. I tend to use alcohol gel. Sometimes hexi or esbit. I do have a tin or bit of foil under the fuel (reflector?) plus a foil wind shield around the whole thing to near the top of the pot. Boils 4c temp 500ml of water in 7-10 minutes in most circumstances. Not super quick but it will do it.
With my experiments, I found that a looser wind screen will allow a better burn and sealing the sides of the pot prevents the heat from coming up the sides which helps quite a bit.
You are completely correct! I use a wind screen most all the time. I chose not to with this experiment. I wanted to see how it would perform in a minimalist capacity.
I agree with some of the others here, don't lock the cup in the stove, heat needs to get around it, not just the bottom. I've used these in the past mainly with twigs, but never locked the cup in it. Stick a couple tent pegs over it and set the cup on them, works better.
Great video. At home I have a small and medium saucepan. I do find the medium boils faster for the same or more volume because of the greater surface to height ratio. This is why I still use a cook pot over a cook cup that is so popular with ultralight hikers. Funny how people still defent this set up in the comments, but solid fuel has also been a week point and I have a ton of Triox/Hex tabs (Canadian military used them)/Dragon fuel are all low BTU fuels compared to gas.
Have you tried just a couple of cross bars. 😂 ya I’ve played a lot with alcohol stoves & adding a couple bars would be an easy test. It should let the heat up & around the cup. Will it work?? … well I don’t have that setup so only one way to find out. I have so many DIY alcohol stoves but I do like my Trangia in a FireBox Nano 🔥
Back to the drawing board I guess. This idea failed, I REALLY want to try the British Mk 2 Crusader Cook Set! Shipping is as much as the 6 piece set though...
Great attempts, and information, Brother !!! Have you tried some "Dragon Fuel" ??? You can put it on the open perlite stove, instead of putting distilled alcohol in it. That would be interesting to find out if that would work. Or maybe you could use a second Altoids tin, under your perlite-filled one, to raise the height closer to the canteen. You can keep the extra tin under the canteen, with the greenie-weenie (green scotch pad) in between, inside the canteen pouch. I hope you can share that experiment with us too. Keep up the great work !!! P.S. I made the same mistake with the canteen cup lid. I had to buy one without that overhanging lip. It had to stick straight out on the edges, instead of having that groove that you have on yours. Good luck, Brother !!!
Howdy Brother! I have tried Dragon Fuel, I Really Like It! Thank You Very Much For Sharing Your Tips! Dont give up! Lol I have pretty good success turning the cup sideways on the stove & using a wind screen. For a burner l use an empty cat food can, no holes, no nuthin, no foolin. It takes 12 to 15 mins & 1.5 ozs alcohol to bring 16 oz of ice water too a boil. If there's any acohol left in the burner it can be snuffed & salvaged. I think boiling 16oz of cold water with 3tbsp of alcohol is a little optimistic. Cheers & good luck in the laboratory, 🇨🇦
Was a great purchase price Earlier comments are correct. Altidore stove too for away from bottom. Having the cup slid tightly into stove starves flame of O2. Sit cup cross ways on top of stove. Works for me with puck style alcohol stove raised to 1 inch from bottom of cup.

In the end, that "Stove" cup stand, was really only made to heat water enough to make coffee. Or heat a ration. Never meant to boil water. Or so my friend who was in the army back in 91 has told me. Or you can keep feeding the fire.
My fixation of the 16oz. amount is what I want from all my stoves/burners. It's my benchmark. I have received a few helpful comments that I will be implementing in future experiments, so the stove isn't completely dead yet, just in ICU!😄😅😆👍 If things change for the better I'll post a follow-up video.
Two tabs burning at once will bring 2 cups to a full rolling boil. I did it a few minutes ago. Temperature is about 50 degrees. Water was about 70 degrees.
@@boonedockery7220 I did the first one with a titanium cup, and 2 actual Esbit cubes. My second test used an aluminum canteen cup, and 2 round knock off fuel tablets. Resulting in lightly boiling water. Small bubbles, it would be enough to reconstitute a freeze dried meal, or make coffee. I just think the fuel tabs smell terrible.
I do like your attempt to use an Altoids alcohol stove to keep the stove integral with the kit. I tried something similar with soda can alcohol stoves. Unfortunately with my approach the stove was carried separately. The problem you are having is that the canteen cup sits so far down into the canteen cup stove that it covers up the holes. Not enough air flow to feed the flame. As others said, turn the canteen cup around so that it's outline is opposite of the canteen cup stove. This allows air gaps between the bottom of the canteen cup and top of the canteen cup stove. However I found this is a bit unstable. I took some heavy wire, one can use a coat hanger, and make two large staple looking U shaped wire clips. Clip each one over the top end of the stove between the fire fuel slot and the other end into one of the vent holes on the opposite side. With two of these, the wire forms a two bar grill surface across the top of the canteen cup stove. Together they lift the cup up a bit and allows flow of the stove heat to come up around the entire bottom of the cup. I store this clips under the canteen pouch flap. Along with a bale I made to turn the canteen cup into a pot. Just drill two holes just under the lip of the cup between the handles and on the opposite side. Clip in the bale and the cup can now hang as a pot. As others said, Self Reliance Outfitters cup lid works great.
I was wondering if you drilled two, or three holes opposite to the bottom of the Air Opening to insert tent stakes to raise up the Altoids Alcohol Burner. Also maybe don’t “lock up” the Cup and the Stove to allow better access to the Altoids Stove and for heating the sides of the cup.
Thanks for the tips! I have received quite a few helpful comments that I will be implementing in future experiments, so the stove isn't completely dead yet, just in ICU!😄😅😆👍
I got rid of my Stainless steel military surplus ones and got a Maxi Titanium canteen cup. It's oversized and offers a person the capability of actually cooking a full size meal when camping. This canteen cup is larger ( 950 ml / or 32.1 oz ) then the Heavy Cover (700ml / or 23.7 oz ) Titanium Canteen cup. I have both cups and I really like the extra capacity of the Maxi Titanium. Inside the Maxi Canteen cup I pack a Firebox Nano X case with a Titanium Folding Firebox Nano Gen 2 wood burning stove. Also included is a Hammock Gear titanium alcohol burning stove as a auxiliary heat source. it makes one complete unit. The canteen cup comes with it's own camo carrying case. Which is really nice since it will not get soot on anything when packed in your backpack. Total weight as I have it is (17 and 1/10th oz or 1.1.1 ) ( 486 Grams ) One other benefit , titanium cols a lot quicker then stainless or aluminum so it can be cleaned and packed sooner.
Most freezes dried meals usually only need 11 ounces or 3/4 canteen cup of water to reconstitute. I use Hexamine or Trixamine tablets to heat the water but not a real boil. The original USGI setup serves well as a lightweight cooking method
Rothco and Miltec have a cup, stove and lid that are compatible. Slightly different dimensions than the issue but still stack with the issue canteen & Nalgene. The stove is much thinner aluminium, works but is flimsy. The cup is okay but the handles don’t lock very well. The Chinese copies of the US issue and Pathfinder set are much better than this. Lixada and Tommshoo (I think) lids are a fair fit on an issue mug.
I use the Toaks siphon stove inside the canteen cup stove and cup turned at a 90 degree angle. Little fuel bottle fits inside siphon stove. Easily boils 2 cups.
Thank You For The Tips! I have received quite a few helpful comments that I will be implementing in future experiments, so the stove isn't completely dead yet, just in ICU!😄😅😆👍
if you have to use the taps (also the ones we used in mili) then you have to use at least two, we use/always used 3 to get it to boil😁🤣😉otherwise they are completely worthless😂with the one you have, it is best to use firewood underneath, but then all holes must also be free
I followed pretty much the same path you did, outfitting my similar kit, but I had a couple of the 1917(?) model cups which the aftermarket kit fit & I liked better anyhow. I ended up getting a new stainless steel lid & canteen cup kit, which fits the stove fine. Heavier but not by much & I use a Fiesta cat chow alcohol stove or trench/slit wood fire under a mini folding grill. Problem is, open flame fires aren't allowed in back coutry in my state, so I'll probably use a mini ultralight pressuurized cannister stove, because of lunatic bureaucracy, gone mad.
I had to use 2 Coghlans Camp Heat to get that setup to a boil in 20 min. Maybe you could do it in less time if you used 4 of those tablets in one go. If 4 would fit, that is.
You need to drill more holes so they go all the way around the stove. Don't push the cup down so tightly. It's really about burn time not heat efficiency. I use a puck stove made of 1 small pop can. It holds about 1 ounce of fuel. This gives me between 12 to 14 minutes of burn time. The only drawback is the cup used with either stove. The Esbit allows flames to heat the handle, so for safer heating go with the G.I. Plus there's only one component to worry about. And yeah, I've turned the cup. And rigged a grill with hanger wire. Unstable and heats the handle. I have pots as well, but again, that's not self contained. What i do have, is a unit that stays on a belt kit, is stealthy, always works, and can be used in more than one way. Y'all have a GOODN.
I feel that the heat source is too far from bottom of the canteen cup. I’ve always used a Hexamine style stove and tabs. However, I’ve never used a canteen stove such as the one you are using. We never had it issued to us in Australia🇦🇺
1. Get the lid from Self Reliance Outfitters. It may cost a little more, but it's the correct size. 2. Turn the stove 180° from the way that you did it. It will make a large difference.
Thanks, I'll give it a try! And I'll be ordering the Self Reliance Outfitters lid! Thank you for letting me know it is the correct size. I don't mind spending a little more fore something that works! Thanks again!
I use my canteen stove all the time, and it works absolutely perfect.. but, the difference is I use mine in the "campfire" scrape up a good pile of coals and set the cup with stove attached over the coals.. it will boil the shit out of a full canteen cup..!!! So, useless is absolutely incorrect.. useless in the world of alternative fuels..?? Maybe..
The canteen stove tends to work best as a way to use a fire/coals to heat water while still keeping your canteen itself cleaner and coated with stuff from the fire. My experience anyway
Thanks for the tips! I have received quite a few helpful comments that I will be implementing in future experiments, so the stove isn't completely dead yet, just in ICU!😄😅😆👍
I replaced the US Military Canteen with a Nalgene Canteen, you can place hot water in a Nalgene Canteen and you can also use Ultraviolet light for disinfecting your water.
Fantastic Suggestion! Of all the gatherings and stores I have visited, I have never seen a Nalgene Canteen sold where I could put my hands on one and check it out. Several of the commenters mentioned it. Guess I'll add a couple to my Christmas List! Thanks for sharing your experience, it's much appreciated!
Fill a screw top small metal tin with plumbing carbon felt and cut some stainless sink strainer to press over the felt and add denatured alcohol light it place stove and two nails o tent pegs across and cup on top walla BOILING FOR SURE.
a 64 oz. rectangular apple juice bottle fits *perfectly* into that pouch, and the straps lock it in. My new go-to. I MOLLE it onto my 3-day assault pack & "bob's yer uncle". I put lighters & fire-making stuff in the little pockets on the side. It is a useful pouch, indeed.
I found a lid that fits the stainless steel canteen cup pathfinder and has drain holes bought the fire dragon stove with jell packs it will bring the water to a boil if you put the lid on and use a larger canteen pouch that will hold everything you need saw the canteen pouch on the prepared wanderer utube video nice complete kit
I have wanted either the Mk I or II for a couple years now! Shipping costs has made the purchase too expensive. As I was doing some follow-up research inspired by the comments on this video, I discovered MRE Mountain, here in the U.S. now sells BOTH. I really like what I've seen of them, especially the Mk II stove. I think I'll get myself both for my birthday😉👍
I myself tried the Altoid tin with fibleglass inside saturated with fuel and believe me, it didn't stand a chance as compared with any one of my cheap Trangia knock off alcohol burners. It cooks meals and boils water in no time inside the very same GI Stove that you're using. The only problem I can see with your setup is the burner.
Why dont you use a simple trangia stove? In the swedish army its a standard part of this set. You can also make a little fire with twigs and sticks. I dont understand your problem. Esbit tablets were never efficient.
"Your problem"? or did you mean to write "The problem"? One is rude, one is not. I'm going to proceed with the assumption that rudeness was not intended. I could if I dig a wee bit of a hole for it to nest in. It's just a little too tall to burn efficiently. The two set criteria I set for this experiment was that I would use my Altoids tin burner and that it would boil 16oz. of water. I have received a few helpful comments that I will be implementing in future experiments, so the stove isn't completely dead yet, just in ICU!😄😅😆👍
@@boonedockery7220 I just put the holes in the bottom of the canteen cup, cut out a section of the side big enough for a trangia, and I put some Chicago screws thru some of the drill holes in the bottom/top to raise the pot/cup/pan a few millimeters off the “grill” part. I used a stainless steal cup, so I ruined quite a few drill bits, but it’s totally serviceable and still nests with my canteen and drinking cup.

@@boonedockery7220well I searched high and low (I’m kinda in the middle of unpacking a move right now) and I found 4 other canteens and kits but not the one with the stove I was describing. I’m going to keep looking (the garage is he last place it could be) so I’ll still make that video when I find it. Hopefully this week. 🙄 I think I even have a perlite altoids stove somewhere. I “think” it will get a boil but I haven’t tried it with the stove cup thing. I think I’ll need to raise it up to be closer to the water.
What I see wrong with your setup is that you stiffeled the air flow with foil. No fuel will burn without oxygen. You covered the holes and closed off the top with pot.
Junk! The plastic canteen bottle after awhile the cap breaks. The stove becomes metal fatigue. The cup is to small. You wasted your money. I strongly suggest the Pathfindet. Great Stuff I wish you great success with the channel. I do appreciate your recommendations, however I do not appreciate your tone. I'm not an expert on anything, don't claim to be nor will I ever. I started my channel during the covid lockdowns to have something to do. It's a hobby, nothing more. If you watched my video to the end, you saw that I mentioned all the short comings to that kit per my purposes for it. I received a tremendous amount of useful tips and recommendations (through the comments) which I plan on experimenting with. "If" they yield good results, the kit will perform as I've hoped it could. If not, oh well, I definitely got my money's worth out of the pouch alone. I'm good with it either way. You could have written your comment in a manner that relayed helpful recommendations without being insulting, i.e.: ( It's been my experience that The plastic canteen bottle cap breaks after a while. Also, The aluminum stove becomes metal fatigued. The cup is smaller than I would personally like. I own and use Pathfinder canteen cook set. It's a Military style Canteen Cook set. It's multi-functional and goes from cooking, to First Aid, or even a weapon. It's my "Never-Leave-Home-Without-It"!) Useful information without attempting to condensed to, belittle or project superiority. I spend several hours a week reading and replying to comments. I normally never reply to the rude ones. I generally just remove them. If the comment is hateful and/or uses profanity, I hide the user from the channel. I chose to reply to your comment because you actually produce content, you did share some useful recommendations, and I personally have a feeling you have something positive and useful to share / contribute (to the bushcrafting / survival / prepping community) through real experimentation and experience. I hope you take this reply in the manner It was intended. I pray you have a blessed day and good luck with your channel.

Thank you, I always try to show the "real"
Great Info! Thank You!

Thank you Brother David!
This is my setup. Works for me, very happy with it and always look forward to using it
It worked very well with the large Esbit Tabs and my small titanium alcohol burner. I was really wanting it to work with my Altoids tin burner. I really like that thing!
For Heavy Duty aluminum foil, buy a disposable roasting pan from the dollar-and-a-quarter store, and cut the sides off.😊
Brilliant! Thank You!
I have rothco cantteen cup with lid and nalgene oasis bottle. It fits perfectly!
I lived on that "cook set" for four years with a small Esbit stove at the bottom loved it
I used a similar setup back in the 1980's while serving in the Army, using military heat tabs with no problems. When the tabs ran out, the stove allowed for a tig fire underneath the cup.
Turn the canteen around on the stand so the indented sides are opposite of each other. It allows more heat transfer to the canteen sides.
I will try it the next time I hit the woods! Thanks for the advice!
That’s right! Turn the canteen cup sideways on stove and use military heat tabs or the Coghlans tabs. Take that foil off the stove. That water be boiling in just a few minutes.😂
Thanks for the test! 😁👍🏻
No problem 👍! Thanks for watching!!!
If you place tent pegs on top of stove will boill as is more of a chimney and draw the heat to the pot not out holes.
Or look at bcb British army kit put carbon felt in stove can stay there and use alcohol works fantastic .
All fantastic suggestions! I will be going a follow-up video based on all the suggestions I've recieved. Thank You!
Try a traditional fire with the canteen stove. It was designed as a "multifuel" stove. Primarily wood or solid fuel tabs.
We would dig a little and burn heat tabs and twigs. Worked pretty good.
Yep. They were built to heat coffee and coco from the old C rations/MCI's or heat the canned meat, etc, with one hex tab. If you want to boil water and such, you used two or more tabs, or augment with twigs and such. Works fine.
@@SSN515 Exactly! 😁👍🏻
Liquid fuels like propane or naphtha worked well, but then you didn't need the "stove."
My Trangia and even my popcan alcohol stoves worked, but they hold WAY more than 3 tbsps of alcohol.
Now, you have me thinking, though ... would the canteen stove act as an efficient windscreen for my BRS-3000 butane stove? To the super coop, Fred!!
I have had problems using aluminum stoves with wood fires. The aluminum couldn't handle the heat structurally.
I had to put a small pot stand on top of the burner which create more draw air flow.
I do think the stove was designed very well it does work to a degree but my idea definitely helped.
It works better with my trangia burner than a small fire
Thanks for the tip!

I too ordered a Rothco lid for a USGI stainless steel canteen cup….and I too was sadly disappointed. What were they thinking?
Apparently, they weren't thinking....
Rothco only fits Rothco... The canteen cup, stove, and lid are all slightly larger than the USGI.
thank you for showing your undesired results. It saves us the trouble.
Gotta share the good and the bad.... I had high hopes......
Esbit for the win.
Also I too fell into the Rothko lid trap.
I hammered the outer rim of the Rothco lid flat all the way around.
It works but doesn't lock down.
I'll be doing something with mine. Just wanted to keep it as I received it for the video.
I'll definitely look into the hell fire! Thanks for the tip!
Heavy duty aluminum foil 😂 I get some big turkey pans from the dollar store
Thank You Brother!
Try turning the cup 180 degrees.
Thanks, I'll give it a try!
Wow John, Brother you did get a steal of a deal on those canteen sets 😳
Can’t believe, though I do believe ya 😉 the difficulty with heating up water in the canteen cup 🤔
I have always had pretty good results with my setup like that but use a large sardine/herring can for my alcohol container or else a regular wood fire 🔥 in the Stove.

What was your boil time for 16 oz.? 16oz. is my standard for stoves.
The Self Reliance Outfitters Pathfinder Canteen Cup Lid fits the U.S. Military’s Canteen Cup perfectly.
I'll be ordering a couple! Thank You!!!!
Observations based on my own experiments over the years are as follows:
1) if you want heavy duty tin foil for a wind break or other projects, dollar store cooking tins work awesome.
@@turtlewolfpack6061 I'll have to try the Fire Rope!
So you are saying the Rothco lids are not USGI spec in dimension. That's very unfortunate.
Hi,
Blackie Thomas uses the canteen stove as a twig stove with success. He has a couple videos showing it in use..
Wonder if two fuel tabs would create enough heat.
Nalgene makes army style canteens that look pretty good.
Thanks for showing what doesn’t work.
I have received so many awesome suggestions about this set, that I will be continuing to experiment with it for quite a while.
Thank you for this information!
I use this setup myself but I place a trangia alcohol stove under there and have no problems boiling water
Surface area is key IMHO.
One of the main problems with using my Stanley cook kit, no surface.

Dont give up! Lol
I have pretty good success turning the cup sideways on the stove & using a wind screen.
Was a great purchase price
Earlier comments are correct. Altidore stove too for away from bottom. Having the cup slid tightly into stove starves flame of O2.
Sit cup cross ways on top of stove. Works for me with puck style alcohol stove raised to 1 inch from bottom of cup.

Not Yet.
In the end, that "Stove" cup stand, was really only made to heat water enough to make coffee. Or heat a ration. Never meant to boil water. Or so my friend who was in the army back in 91 has told me. Or you can keep feeding the fire.

My second test used an aluminum canteen cup, and 2 round knock off fuel tablets. good effort! now try turning the cup around on the stand and using your foil for a wind shield/heat funnel John...woods
I will try it the next time I hit the woods! Thanks for the advice!
All fantastic suggestions! I will be going a follow-up video based on all the suggestions I've received. Thank You!
No lip on the lid of the Pathfinder Canteen Cup Lid. You can modify the Rothco Lid by Cutting and blending the rim of the lid.
It's on my list of things to do. I wanted to keep it as I purchased it for the video. Thanks!
Total weight as I have it is (17 and 1/10th oz or 1.1.1 ) ( 486 Grams )
One other benefit , titanium cols a lot quicker then stainless or aluminum so it can be cleaned and packed sooner.
Most freezes dried meals usually only need 11 ounces or 3/4 canteen cup of water to reconstitute. I use Hexamine or Trixamine tablets to heat the water but not a real boil. The original USGI setup serves well as a lightweight cooking method
The lids from self reliance outfitters will fit the GI cups with butterfly handles.
Thank You! I'll be purchasing a couple!!!
I had planned on ordering a couple pathfinder lids, I've heard they fit propperly.
I use the Toaks siphon stove inside the canteen cup stove and cup turned at a 90 degree angle. Little fuel bottle fits inside siphon stove. Easily boils 2 cups.

if you have to use the taps (also the ones we used in mili) then you have to use at least two, we use/always used 3 to get it to boil😁🤣😉otherwise they are completely worthless😂with the one you have, it is best to use firewood underneath, but then all holes must also be free
Bravo!!!!!!
I like the name of the channel.
Why thank you sir! I think I see why :)
I had to use 2 Coghlans Camp Heat to get that setup to a boil in 20 min. Maybe you could do it in less time if you used 4 of those tablets in one go. If 4 would fit, that is.
I just think the stove design needs to be rethought!
I use the stove to rake up coals under it in a wood fire. With the lid you can put on top as well. I’ve made bread this way
Very Cool! Thanks for the tip!
The rothko lid is made exclusively in the rothko kit, i have the whole rothko kit, canteen, cup, kit and stove
I feel that the heat source is too far from bottom of the canteen cup. I’ve always used a Hexamine style stove and tabs. However, I’ve never used a canteen stove such as the one you are using. We never had it issued to us in Australia🇦🇺
Try two pop can bottoms and isopropyl bet it boils but not with that aluminum cup any way. They dissipate to much heat at once. Stainless will boil.
Maybe..
The Rothco lid will fit older WWII cups with the rolled rim. Yours doesn't have a rolled rim. Earlier designs had the rolled rim.
The canteen stove tends to work best as a way to use a fire/coals to heat water while still keeping your canteen itself cleaner and coated with stuff from the fire. My experience anyway
Excellent! Thanks for sharing this!
Maybe no foil but leave the lid on the altoid open under the cup to block the holes. I expect that to push the flame up.
I use small sticks with mine and I don't have any issues with it. You're not always going to have fuel tabs or alcohol on hand in the woods
Fill a screw top small metal tin with plumbing carbon felt and cut some stainless sink strainer to press over the felt and add denatured alcohol light it place stove and two nails o tent pegs across and cup on top walla BOILING FOR SURE.
Thanks for the suggestion!
a 64 oz. rectangular apple juice bottle fits *perfectly* into that pouch, and the straps lock it in. My new go-to. I MOLLE it onto my 3-day assault pack & "bob's yer uncle". I put lighters & fire-making stuff in the little pockets on the side. It is a useful pouch, indeed.
Brilliant! Going to have to try this! Thanks for sharing!
Nalgene makes or made canteens. I have 3…..
I've put them on my Christmas list. Hopefully I'll get a couple of them instead of coal....
@@boonedockery7220 lumps of coal will keep you warm through a cold winter night 🍺🫵🤟🇨🇦🫡🇺🇸🤟🫵🍺
I feel like the holes should be closer to the bottom
Agreed!
Check out the British Army BCB Crusader Canteen Cook System (Osprey Water Bottle) I have the Mk-1 Cooker, it looks like it’s perfect for your system.
Pathfinder makes a vented lid that will work
I myself tried the Altoid tin with fibleglass inside saturated with fuel and believe me, it didn't stand a chance as compared with any one of my cheap Trangia knock off alcohol burners. It cooks meals and boils water in no time inside the very same GI Stove that you're using. The only problem I can see with your setup is the burner.
There's canteen cup stand the canteen cup stove is actually designed for solid fuel tabs and it supports the canteen cup
What is a boon dock ?@s I'm not American
Being in the middle of nowhere/primitive wilderness, primitive living conditions far from technology, would be "In The Boondocks".
Ok we would say been out in the sticks
Take the lid and bend the lips out and it will sit atop a GI cup. The non-GI cup that a Rothco lid fits on, the standard GI canteen will not fit in.
Thank You!
And yet military across the world have used the same style of canteen and cup for 100 years
I got a rothco lid and a milsurp stove... It works better than nothing.
Agreed!
Try hat again, but use the lid you should get a boil quicker
I'm in UK and after disappointment even I know Rothco canteen cup lids are crap, they don't even properly fit on Rothco canteen cups
I Believe That!!!!!
@boonedockery7220 Yes I had to take a hefty set of pliers to the rim and got a passable fit
I took a canteen cup and modified it into a stove.
Hmmmmm....... very cool idea.... I have quite a few canteen cups.....
@@LordThree You need to post a video of this! I won't forget to like, subscribe and hit the notification bell!
@@boonedockery7220 you know what, I guess I probably could do. I’ve got another channel for bushcrafty stuff tho. -This- particular channel is mostly comedy and I don’t wanna “cross the streams” so to speak. I’ll see if I can make one this afternoon and upload it. My other channel is “BeerAndBushcraft” but it hasn’t been updated in years. I’ll let you know when I upload that- my schedule is mostly clear for the day. 👍🏻
I think I even have a perlite altoids stove somewhere. I “think” it will get a boil but I haven’t tried it with the stove cup thing. I think I’ll need to raise it up to be closer to the water.
If you use fuel tabs like esbit or twigs, you wouldn't have had such a hard time.
Boone: We ALL know that WATCHED POTS NEVER BOIL! "Sodom and Godora!" What a shameless set of claims on those tabs!
Hahahahaaaaa!!!!! Truth! I unfortunately I watched it for far too long!
Might want to tuck that scarf in over invisible alcohol/tab flames...
good point
What I see wrong with your setup is that you stiffeled the air flow with foil. No fuel will burn without oxygen. You covered the holes and closed off the top with pot.
Your issue is the stove
The altoids tin is very ineffective
Switch to the soda can stove
Junk! The plastic canteen bottle after awhile the cap breaks. The stove becomes metal fatigue. The cup is to small. You wasted your money. I strongly suggest the Pathfindet. It's Military Canteen Cooking set is multi-function. Ot goes from cooking, First Aid, and weapon. You can't say much with your kit. You buy once and you cry once. It's my "Never-Leave-Home-Without-It "
I deeply appreciate your recommendations Nick. I checked out your channel and watched your Pathfinder Cook Set, GI Mess Kit, and Locking Butterfly Handles videos.
You could have written your comment in a manner that relayed helpful recommendations without being insulting, i.e.:
( It's been my experience that The plastic canteen bottle cap breaks after a while. Also, The aluminum stove becomes metal fatigued. The cup is smaller than I would personally like. I own and use Pathfinder canteen cook set. It's a Military style Canteen Cook set. It's multi-functional and goes from cooking, to First Aid, or even a weapon. It's my "Never-Leave-Home-Without-It"!)
Useful information without attempting to condensed to, belittle or project superiority.
