A chain of friends touch an electric fence and fall to the ground!
Scientific explanation for those interested:
For the benefit of the wider science community, I thought I would explain the basic principles behind this video. The electric fence used was a pulse electric fence. It shoots an electric pulse every few seconds. Note the first in line is holding the electric fence for the entire duration of the film. He is standing on plastic which is an insulator, therefore the electric current couldn't travel through the plastic into the ground so it just keeps going down the wire and not into the human chain. However, when the last in line takes of his shoes, it means the electricity can run right through the chain through his feet and into the ground. I have heard from other sources that the closer you are to the end of the line the more resistance you cause and therefore get the greatest shock. Poor guy! :) Hope that helps! - Комедії
Moral to this story - always be the person holding the camera.

In our physics class, my teacher used a Van De Graaf to show an experiment. But for a bit of fun she decided to do what she called “The Chain Of Pain” she does this for every year. Someone stands with their hands on the Van De Graff whilst on top of an insulator and a gain positive charge. The teacher then formed a line of students holding hands with one person at the end facing the person holding the Van De Graph. That student would then touch the person on the van de graph and the charges would discharge through all the students to the ground creating a shock. Thus the name “The Chain Of Pain”.
That…that is absolutely fucking incredible.
Did you get to experience it?
@@lynashmcmash4427 Yes, it’s not that bad to be honest. She made sure that the amount of charges we received wasn’t too much. I’d say it’s maybe just a bit worse than the kind of shock you get from a jumper. It does also depend how close you are to the person.
Plus, the person would have their hands off the Van De Graph at that point. But they would stay on the insulator so as the charge stays on them. It is really interesting since their hair sticks up due to the repulsion of the positively charged hair and the positively charged Van De Graph. Once the student touches the person who’s on the insulator their hair falls back since the charges have left. So it is a really good experiment. And funny in the process.
I remember doing that in my science class. The teacher started by having a student hold it so we could see his hair rise from the static. The teacher then asked the student how he was feeling and the student said "I feel powerful"
"Is he usually like that?"
"How will you get a photo where everyone jumps together, it is impossible"
"Easy, we just need to run electricity through us"

My shoes have never stopped an electric fence from shocking me.
I wouldn't expect sneakers to but I had some boots meant for pasture work that were specifically insulated, which let me get away with some dumb shit the summer I spent building fence.
We always used a piece of grass to test the wire before touching it. The resistance in the grass limits the shock.
Same.
It still goes through your hand. It just goes back into the wire after, instead of through your body, so there's a significant difference in intensity. Worked with horses for several years, and we had a bunch of kids come for horse camp every summer. I'd always demonstrate how the electric fence around the "high security" paddock(very crafty pony) worked by holding the wire normally, then holding the wire and touching the ground with my other hand. Do it normally and your hand and arm twitches a little, but touch the ground and your whole body tenses with each pulse.
@@KuchenEsser it does NOT go just through your hand. Current takes the path of least resistance, so there is zero reason why the current would go through your hand and back into the wire.
Shoes will add a lot of resistance, so you will feel only light shocks (that still travel through your whole body).
My physics teacher actually showed my class this video back in highschool lol. This made it easy to understand insulators

The second kid was the true king of the hill, he didn't fall of his throne
Amazing
Ikr!
The shock gets worse the further along the chain you are, so he would have had a mild shock compared to the poor guy at the end on the left, which is probably why he managed to stay standing there.
@J. Jonah Jameson not exactly sure of the science, but I'll give it a shot. Essentially the person who is grounding the charge (guy on the left) is receiving the energy he is storing plus some of the energy of everyone to his right. The same applies to each person, meaning the closer you get to the fence, the less energy you receive. With a long enough line, you could give the grounding person a fairly serious shock. It's a pretty common classroom demonstration with the Van de Graaff generator. I did it a few years ago with my physics class and our principal; we almost knocked our principal off his feet.
So you want to say, the last one had the whole earth as his throne?
They had some fun. A happy memory from 12 years ago to look back on.
Beautiful scenery. Go out there and live. Don't sit in your home or office your entire life.
As a general rule, you should never grab onto a wire the way he did in the video because if the voltage is high enough, it can cause your hand to grasp the wire even tighter and you won’t be able to release. So if you ever want to touch a live wire you should do it with the back of your hand to be safe, or preferably not do it at all 😂. I know it doesn’t matter for the low current of the electric fence in the vid, but just a little warning.
Electric fences are made to be safe, the current isn’t continuous but more of a pulse every few seconds. (You can see it takes a while between the moment they touch each other and the moment they jump). But yeah, always test fences with the back of your hand and palm up just in case
@@ameliegonissen7154Oh cool, I was wondering why there was a delay
bro no disrespect but why are you commenting when you have no idea how electric fences work lol they are incredibly high voltage + they pulse so theres no chance of becoming trapped on the wire i mean you can clearly see hes holding onto it at the beginning waiting for it to pulse
@@imLidan ok, my bad I thought electric fences have low voltage high current, when really they have high voltage low current, thanks for pointing that out. Either way though, I never said electric fences were dangerous. My point was just for general wire safety, you should never grasp a wire they way they did in the video even if you think it’s safe… it’s always better to test it with the back of your hand first just to be totally safe.
The weed burner models had enough voltage to kill grass and weeds that got tall enough to touch the wire. Sometimes the weeds would overwhelm the wire and just short out the wire.

There is something that is so wholesome about this. I think it is the collective agreement to all cross their borders of fear, and to be brave, all for the sake of the memory, despite the danger and the pain. They collectively experience and form a memory that will last them for their whole lives, it is a moment experienced for it's own sake (ambedo). The moment when you decide to cross the limits of your mind, guarded by the supposedly uncrossable wall of fear, you are reaching a form of transcendence, as you discover a new world on the other side.
