So remember how Mi-nyeo, the crazy lady, raved after the tug-of-war that she had never felt as powerful as when they leaned back? She did it again, to kill Deok-su. I've also read that this death is a reference to a Korean novel where a widow seduces and kills the soldier that killed her husband by grabbing him and pulling him off a cliff in the same way.
There are a lot of Korean culture references in the show. I learned that 212 staying alive is a thing there. They give the smaller weaker kids special abilities, like advantages or extra lives, so when picking teams it stops the usual American mindset of picking the “best” people on your team and learning to work with all people. When they call people over it is palm down. It is considered disrespectful the tell someone “come here” with your palm up. 212 death is a big story in Korea where a woman did the same thing off a cliff to save her village. Looking up all these small details makes the show soooo much better. This show was so good this is still my fave episode.
This is the game I found the most horrifying out of all of them.

Remember clause #3...if the majority decides to quit, then the player's families who were eliminated would be given money; the husband ( player 69) would have still gotten a pay day for his late wife.

But you forgot 2-3 facts:
1. The other players wouldn't want to quit anymore, after going through all of that.
2. I don't think that would make sense that the husband would have the money because he's also a player.
3. To the husband, money no longer mattered to him, especially since his wife is gone.
I don't think he was grooming Ali, at least before returning to the game. By that point, with the bus ticket, I think he was being genuine. The man was about to kill himsel, so I doubt he thought he'd get to play again
You keep saying that Sangwoo put his mother's house up for collateral. . But, Gi hun stole his mother's money out of her bank account and took her off health insurance for the extra money( that's why she's so sick). Both men are not perfect sons. Sangwoo wasn't the only one pushing people off, and if he hadn't they all would have died.
Also how people will come for Sangwoo about taking advantage of Ali’s foreigner status and not knowing the games or having complete command of the Korean language but forgive or forget that Gihun also knowingly took advantage of the Player 01 and his illness to survive. So much social and moral commentary to take away from this show and that’s one of my favorite parts 😃
Also sang woo didn’t put up his mothers home up for gambling. He thought he came across a good business deal but needed the money so he offered his mothers house up too thinking once the deal was made it would all pay off. Unfortunately he got fucked over and the deal landing him in big trouble. It wasn’t about a gambling addiction.
I love how the woman tried to survive, not for the cash prize anymore, but for revenge. And now, we all see Smart Guy's true colors

8:16 idk if anyone else experiences this, but I'm asian and it's considered more polite to beckon people over with your palm facing down. Everyone in my fam does it lol cos beckoning with your palm facing up feels rude. Since the director is Korean I wonder if that was a specific direction that he gave the actor :O!!
I think in Korea is the same. In Europe the hand is facing up, because if is facing down we think they are saying go away

Both Sang-Woo & Gi-Han are two sides of the same coin. Throughout the series we find out they committed the same selfish acts for similar reasons. The difference between these two is their conscience. Gi-Han shows his guilt & remorse for his actions & decisions. Whereas Sang-Woo doesn't feel guilty or remorse for his actions & decisions. Sang-Woo is the type that would "do it again" if given another opportunity. Gi-Han is the type that would "do it differently". We all want to believe that we'll be more like Gi-Han when our backs are against the wall. But the fearful reality is that we're possibly like Sang-Woo

Sangwoo tho is just realistic. He knows it’s one winner. I hate how when geehun tricked the old man everyone let him out of it, and how he’s treated his mom, but sangwoo is hated on when in reality he just knows he needs to survive. Double standards. All characters are broken and ruined. Sangwoo just did what he had to in the situation. Questionable morality is the epitome when survival is at hand. This entire show focuses on the fact that humanity actually is broken and are animals in the end because thats what society makes us be, and that the rich will overpower the poor no matter what

Yeah, one of the VIPs was Chinese. The rest were white and at least 2 of them had American accents.
Also, remember, you haven’t seen the host’s face yet. He’s the one running this rendition/season of the game.

You shouldn't be afraid to say the name of someone in another country or language if you don't know it. So long as you try and don't make it a joke then its fine. Even countries and languages like mine that have almost exactly the same letters, we don't pronounce or say them the same. Like I'm Þorsteinn Guðmundsson. My name is relatively easy I suppose, but a lot of our words have different pronounceistion than English speakers are use to. You could listen to an Icelandic Alphabet song if you're curious. Nobody expects you to get the names right.
the husband and wife probably felt they would double their chances if they both played. In theory that makes sense but they didn't know what the games would be so it was risky.

About the VIP calling the cop over: in Japan, it's considered rude if you use the gesture that we use to call someone over. So in Japan, if they want to call someone over to them, they use the gesture that we use when we're telling someone to go away. I'm guessing maybe it's the same way in Korea. Which would explain why the VIP used that gesture instead.

I don't see the darkening of the lights as inherently unfair. One player had an advantage the others didn't. Granted they would have been fine with that advantage cause it would have helped them, but it sorta wasn't fair to all the folks who had to go before him. It's debatable at least
yeah but there are all sorts of advantages throughout - the organisers chose an inherently unfair traditionally strength based game in Tug Of War. So people have had natural advantages throughout. Other peoples employment/ work helped them throughout , ie saebyoks thieving and deok sus gangster ruthlessness helped them, as did sangwoos intlelect help him.
I think the whole point is the Front Man may believe his spiel of being fair, but the second the billionarres were bored he was prepared to change all that and any 'morality' he had, showing that in reality it was never fair and always losing fight of rich vs poor.

I haven't even begun the reaction and I want to make some things clear because every comment thread devolves into the same counter points to the objection to the VIP's. TO BE CLEAR: 1) I understand it was written by non english speakers & it is difficult to find quality english acting in SK on a small budget. 2) I recognize they were supposed to be portrayed as immature morons who lucked into their fortunes yet judge these poor people. I get it, trust me, I do.
There is NO EXCUSE for how absolutely sacrilegiously horrible the VIP's were: 1) WRITTEN 2) ACTED. They were an abomination and a disgrace. Even the people defending them acknowledge the CHEESY dialogue. Look at a movie like the hunt where they also had elitist A holes who played with the poor's lives yet they wrote those villains in a humorous smart way.
All of the hard earned tension with these characters is wasted on these BRUTAL dialogue.
