woman in the first story needs to protect her peace and leave that man alone 😭 after hearing that he was unfaithful, it definitely solidified the fact that she just needs to stop worrying about him. being empathetic is a great thing but too much of anything isn’t always ideal
"That man" is also her child's father. Maybe she wants him around to keep playing that role. He's lost his rights to being a husband, (drugs and whatever else she thinks went on) but he hasn't lost his rights, yet, to fatherhood.

@@kpoparmyorbit Maybe you'll see that I was playing "devil's advocate" and trying to see it from OP's perspective. Not anywhere in my comment did I say that he was an admirable role model. Some people have a sentimental view of how important a man is to their mutual children, without fully realizing just HOW that may manifest. Idealistic. Absolutely not ideal, in practice. They believe that children are always better off with a some male in the picture, despite all the evidence to the contrary. Sad, really.

First story: what a mess. He’s aware of what he is doing. She cannot help him. Second story: he knows what she wants and doesn’t want. If he wants marriage and a family he is going to have to leave her. If he doesn’t leave her then he knows what his life will be. Third story: it’s her hair. She should do as she wants. If she really wants to make a statement she should get it all cut off in a buzz cut.
Story 3: “plus she spent 12 years agreeing to my terms” this is exactly why I can’t fully sympathize with OP. She tried talking to him about marriage at a younger age, when they had plenty of time to decide if they wanted to plan their future together or break up and look for someone else who agrees to ‘their terms’ but he blew it off saying it wasn’t the right time. She wasn’t asking for marriage there and then, but to see if OP sees a future for them, moving the relationship forward at some point, and he couldn’t even answer that? It didn’t even sound like he was making any attempts to show how much he wanted to progress their relationship if he hadn’t even considered living together before this.
I’m wondering if OP’s gf really loved him to the point she was willing to wait and eventually stay with him even after figuring he’d never propose, or if she decided they’d been together for so long, she was afraid to break up and have to start over again with dating.
Maybe she found out that she had the best of both worlds; a father to a child she may wish to have, but not having to run around picking up his dirty socks all the time.
They were definitely both stuck. I mean the fact that they were living separately for 12 years? Of course she got used to it. Bet she even forgot she had a bf sometimes and the relationship just became convenient to her and she thought he felt the same way
In the first story, that man is still the father of her daughter and have shared custody of her. OP probably want to help him not for his sake, but for the sake of their daughter. He doesn't sm abusive, just a mess and no child deserve to see their parent at such low point, or worse, dead...

I had a friend like that who would say things like , I will stop talking to you if you cut your hair. He also wanted to date me. But I never did as I saw hugeeee red flags. When I cut him off, I finally cut my waist length hair to my shoulder, it was a big chop, he messaged me awful things saying how I was undesirable now. The AUDACITY OF SOME PEOPLE.
Disregard. He stopped being even remotely desirable (even as a friend) when he started trying to control your choices. Therefore, anything he says is invalid, void, has nil value and shouldn't even take up rent space in your head.
Oh, some people _genuinly_ can't fathome the absolut compliment them not finding a person desirable is.

How does shorter (not even short) hair make someone look old by itself??? In theory if he’s saying that because old people have short hair it makes her look old, the old age should cancel out with the fact that babies also usually have short (if any) hair. Exactly! In many cases long hair actually makes people look older, it depends a lot on the personality of a person as well as several other factors: type of haircut, face shape, hair and skin color, if they have damaged hair or not, etc.
If a loved one said that type comment to me, I would have gotten a pixie haircut, see how they liked it.
Third story, GET THAT HAIRCUT. The hair will grow healthier. Besides, anything a lot longer than "shoulder-lenght" looks exactly the same from the front!
I know the fear of cutting curly/wavy hair, that maybe it will puff up: it won't do that at boob lenght and besides hair products have improved a lot in the last +20 years.

Second story: they could get married but maintain seperate residences. It called living apart together. That way they and the child/children have the legal protection of marriage but she still has the space she needs.
I’m pretty sure in the Reddit post he stated he wanted to live with her and go the extra mile so they would likely be breaking up. If only he figured it out sooner

Wow- I’m 59 & have long hair to my tailbone , my husband likes my hair “long” too, but every time it gets to my tailbone, he asks when am I going to cut it, like 3-5 “ shorter- and I actually agree with him, as I’ve been trimming it 2-4 inches like every other year- and I’ll say, it does indeed give me “headaches” at times, so I feel for her wanting to cut some off. I’m just used to it being long, & have had it cut shorter way above my breast, many, many times throughout the 30 plus years, without complaint from my man. Wish her all the luck too. ( yes, m hair grows fast )

In the very first story, the main protagonist's ex husband being depressed isn't her problem at all because it was him who chose to cheat on her with her own brother. That is a completely lame excuse blaming his actions on the substances that him and her brother took. He just needs to accept the fact that she's never, ever coming back to him and just move on with his life. She just seriously should sit him down and tell him that he needs to get his life in order so that he can be there for their daughter.. In the second story, I think that he really should just go ahead and break up with her because it's very obvious to see that they both want different things. Maybe when they first got to together back in their early twentiies she was thinking about marriage while he was like I'm way to young for that right now, and now that he's in his mid thirties the roles have reversed to where now he wants to get married and start a family, but she doesn't want to get married anymore. I completely blame him for waiting so long to pop the question to her. In the third story, you go ahead and cut your girl and kick his sorry self to the curve, and how dare he say that you'll look ugly if you cut your hair. I hope that you love your new hair!! Story 1. This is a really hard one, as we are talking about two people who were hit really hard by a bad decision. I would not recommend that OP reach out to her ex again, based on what he did previously when she tried to reach out and expressed her concern about his condition. Maybe she can contact his parents if they are still alive and talking to him, or other relatives. or friends. I definitely hope the guy gets the help he needs.
First story, "last time (I told him I was worried) he misunderstood thinking that I would give him another chance". Do not help him, same thing is going to happen again. Maybe help the sister that's housing him, but that's it.

The hair one. I think its only fair game as long as she doesn't go having a problem if the guy did something with himself.
Like its sucks you like the person to have a certain hair style or colour but at the end of the day, he can't forced her. So if the guy cut his hair and styled it into a mohawk, she can't get angry at him, right?
It's not a red flag to have a preference but it is a red flag to blow up over hair. Especially what the girl was going to do is pretty reasonable. Where as some girls would cut all their hair off and give it a ridiculous colour.

Last story: OP doesn't say how long they've been married, but I wonder if the 9-year age gap has him thinking he's some kind of older-brother/father figure. Does he do what he wants with his own hair? 🤨 If so, do what you want with yours.

Hes going to keep doing whatever he wants whenever he wants because he knows you will always be there for him at the end of the day with your arms right open for whenever it is that he wants (something from) you.
This is all because there are never any real consequences for him to have to face when he acts up like this just as a teenager would.
Im sorry but he is not your husband, he is your oldest child in this relationship and will always want to be your highest priority at all times.
He doesn't see you as his equal and therefore he has no respect for you.
