Fixing Exhaust Flex Pipe Leak when you're Poor | Toyota, Lexus, Etc...

- Tutorial for fixing a Leaking Exhaust Flex Pipe, if you don't really care about your car and just need to make it through the winter. Probably the worst tutorial ever, but hopefully you'll find it entertaining. Also, there is a lift in the shop, but we figured it'd be more realistic on the ground.
Done on a $850* 1998 Toyota Avalon, with 3.0L V6 1MZ-FE. Very similar for all cars, but particularly all 90s/00s Toyota and Lexus.

Absolutely amazing video! I just replaced mine and my car is almost silent compared to what it used to be. Best $30 I’ve ever spent
My 06 Sienna needs this. I almost replaced the whole pipe but I found this video. Thanks for the tip.
where's the J-B Weld and the bailing wire hose clamp poor man fix i was looking for?
I was about to replace my whole pipe and found the mid pipe bolts rusted so bad they are one with the pipe now. Glad I found this video, I'll just chop the flex off both pipes and replace it that way 😂 Thanks guys!
My 2005 Honda accord just started making this sound, thank you for this problem.
hahah I have the same leak on my '05 accord
the headers end could be splayed and then clamped with a good seal of exhaust sealer cement.
My 09 Camry needs flex replacement, and I wish you guys are near by.
No braid flex pipe then the torque of the engine twisting back and forth will snap exhaust or wear it out quuicker. I was gonna used corrgurated flex pipe instead but i found a braided flex pipe and clamped it instead of welding it.
Clamps, good call. Maybe a bit of exhaust repair putty between the old pipe and the new braid beneath the clamp
Yeah, but you still need a angle grinder for the job lol
How has it been holding up so far
Just looking at the engine layout. I knew it was the tried and true, 1mz-fe that my Sienna has
Good job! I'm so poor I couldn't even do this. I don't have a sawzall, grinder/cutter or welding equipment. Unless it uses a ratchet wrench, screwdriver or hammer, I can't do it. :)
DIY for when you're poor!*
*= (But happen to have a few grand in good tools)
Not really... I had no choice to get mine done in a shop. The flex pipe was in too awkward a place for us to get at it. The cost from my guy was $260...
If it's in a place you can get at then, a cheap saw-za to cut the pipe can be found around $70 on amazon, careful with the reviews and you can find a welder for $120, the part is only $20 and I've seen it cheaper on amazon. with miscellaneous other things you'll need you'll probably break even around $260, except now you have a welder, a sawzaw, and new skills to put toward other money saving projects.
@@SylkieDev sawzall is 20 dollars at Harbor Freight
@@SylkieDev You go from saw-za to sawzaw? Keep trying. Not really hard to spell, especially when you are literally looking at other comments spelling it correctly, and have clearly already taken the time to Google it/shop for it.
Idk why the name of this tool is so hard for people
@@ragnaroksangel My bad, next time I'll spell the sawzer-zawizer correctly!
Welllll actually the flex pipe to due to engine movements. The flex pipe prevents your exhaust cracking, snapping, breaking due to engine movement when torqued. The rubber boots on hangers are to prevent rattling due to vibration.
Meineke did mine just cut the pipe out and put a regular pipe in it... Works fine.
Heck yeah, can definitely live without one. Some people have suggested that flex pipes are just a repair shop conspiracy lol
Theonomics no your fuel economy goes down with a busted one. I know having it happen to my car.
About how much did Meineke charge? I need one done on my Lexus ES350
After replacing mines today it sounds better and I feel like my car runs better also but on a red light it starts to shake somewhere in the engine.
This is just great!
That is just great!
I was poor like you years ago.
Now I have 2 mansions, 2 private jets,2 wives and 2 mistresses.
So don't give up.
And 2 likez
So can this make your car more noise and lose power?
on my car, I definetely have less kick because of this
Could gum some sealant up there and clamp a half sleeve on.
My 2012 Nissan Altima flex pipe is broken on one side. So I'm guessing fixing this would repair the slight exhaust leak and vibrations
Most likely. Easiest way to tell if leaking is when start car on cold morning, should be able to see exhaust fumes leaking from it.
What size flex pipe is it
What size is the flex pipe my toyota need repair front that
So you had a leaking flexpipe removed it just to put the new one on and still have a leak becasue you were to lazy to remove the manifold which is very easy to do, total fail and waste of time.
Does it make any difference in the sound if I don't put flex pipe? I mean putting a pipe instead of flex pipe
You can technically do regular exhaust pipe, but it isn't recommended. The flex pipe allows some flexibility when working on the exhaust. It also absorbs vibrations from the motor and keeps the rest of the exhaust from wearing out.
2000 camry same I think had sienna van same tried to get 400 from me said no way gave the van away still running driving
When welding a flex pipe, is it better to insert it inside the pipe or outside, or does it not matter? How about when using exhaust clamps?
Inside
Would this cause the car to smoke and have a bad acceleration
Yes, an exhaust leak can impact the air/fuel mix and cause the car to accelerate poorly and burn oil, which causes smoke to come from the exhaust.
Hey Theo, my flex pipe is badly torn, car runs lean, how bad does this affect gas mileage and performance?
Can you tell me which pipe you bought ? I need to do this on my 1MZ but need to in on the size of the flex pipe
I believe the internal diameter is 2 inches. They can vary depending on how they are supposed to be installed. If they are supposed to go over and be clamped on, it will usually be 1/4 inch bigger.
Put a big glob of JB Weld on that top part that you couldn't weld........
Great vid
Hank Hill thanks! Hope it helped!
Good job, but you could have finished the job by taking the bolts out of the manifold exhaust and weld all around the pipe and put back on.
That's exactly what I was wondering. It only takes an extra couple of minutes to take off the manifold and finish up the weld
In the video near the end, one of you says that should get you back to London. Is that London, ON? I am not too far away if it is, I am in Woodstock.

I'm in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Not too far away. Love visiting Ontario.
i think i paid a shop to do this figured they didnt weld top :(
I hope it's that easy for my 2005 Avalon
I have a 98 Avalon. Flex pipe is done for and the flanged that connect the cat to the rest of the pipe downward is rusted and leaking. I'm gonna take the exhaust off from the engine back (hope I can because bolts are rusted tf out.thats my only issue. The rest is easy ..even with a shitty old job it shall hold
Can you use regular non braided flex pipe? I can welded a new braided one. But if i can go with flex pipe and clamp it, i prefer that so i can easily replace it.
I'm not sure what kind of pipe you're looking to replace it with, but as long as it isn't leaky, it will work. Technically you don't need any flex pipe at all, but it does serve it's purpose.
doesnt the exhaust gases leak through the weave??
You’d think so, but I guess most of these have a steel bellow like tube running inside. You can kinda see the remnants (ribbed parts) in this one at 2:10
tack weld it and clamp her it'll stop the leak
Would this leak cause a CEL to come on ? It's after the O2 sensors ??
Yes it would .you have a 02 at the cat convertor and it will set that off due to to much oxygen being drawn in thru the leak
@@westsidedavie I ended up replacing the whole system....from engine to tail pipe, no CEL anymore. Fixed the brakes, steam cleaned the car, it was so nice, I did not want to sell it. 07 Camry I bought new. Paid cash, franklins in a paper bag, seeing the sales guys face, Priceless....
Hey anyo, anyone, know where to find the flexpipe. Is it the FLX2008B Jones exhaust on amazon?
My exhaust shop did that with removing anything just cut it off
No more exaust buzz!
They say these are there because the exhaust would break from engine movment if it where solid, in "some" cases this is true
But all the exhaust mounts are rubber and flexible anyways, so i don't understand the need. the exhaust is already flexible.
@@jondoe6926 true but that's really only side to side movement not up and down which is how a transverse mounted engine will be trying to move the exhaust if it where solid
I' m HAVE Trouble with my Exzause As Well!!
Pretty good I guess.
when your poor you dont have a welder or even no how so this dont help me
EXACTLY !!! :D
Use straight pipe and clamps
Yea I think the headline is wrong because if your poor you don't have a welder or a grinder
Its.....fast?
If you're poor then you don't have access to a welder! Where's the exhaust clamps? ;)
I can do it by titanium
damn I new I should've bought a welder instead of beer, I'm poor in the noggin
Not Sure What it is!! 203 Toyota Camry!
Would it be easier to take the entire exhaust system out and work this thing outside, instead of try to do everything under the car. It looks very dangerous the way they did it.
In a perfect world yea
That would take a long time and exhaust bolts tend to break. I work at an exhaust shop and we do it this way, and most people are not willing to pay extra for all that.
What size is that flex pipe?
I believe the exhaust was 2in diameter, the pipe was 2.25in and 6in long. It's holding up surprisingly well, but sometimes it's better/easier to just buy the whole front exhaust section.
Very hard job I know thanks
Linus mechanic tips
Can u weld mine too. Lol
What do you think of cutting the new flex pipe in half. Wrap it around the old damaged flex pipe and maybe just clamp it?
Wouldn't that be even more work?
@@Wilcoranking You wouldn't have to remove old one or weld the new one in.
Its a toyota...it doesnt need oil
That's not fixing. You're replacing it
I guess it's for poor people...with a MIG! LoL.
😅
How great it is
Just great 😂
Ah ebay! I wish the local auto parts store would sell these.
Who poor has a welder???????
Lol it's easier then this, there making it hard
You make martial arts seem easy.
Owen Parseghian use one of my kicks it will fall right off
My 09 Camry needs flex replacement, and I wish you guys are near by.
