That's cause x pipes don't do what he's claiming they do. They usually just make it more high pitched. What he needs is back pressure, muffling or resonating. So unless the x shaped pipes are resonated they won't do shit to improve the sound.

A single Magnaflow dual in/out muffler with a built in x-pipe would've been more simple and gotten rid of all the clapping, so it sounds like a grown up truck.

    • @SteelyEyedMissileDan
      @SteelyEyedMissileDan 4 місяці тому +1

I don't recommend those Magnaflow "Tru-X" resonator/x-pipe combos. X-pipes need high-velocity, smooth-flowing exhaust pulses, because those pulses need to pass straight through the crossover without expanding out into the other pipe, which would slow it down, increasing backpressure, reducing scavenging, and thus completely defeating the sole purpose of the x-pipe. Muffling harsh frequencies and drone is the sole purpose of resonators and mufflers. You can certainly build a resonator by sticking a heavily perforated x-pipe into a muffler case full of packing and/or baffle chambers. That muffles the sound by intentionally diffusing exhaust gases into the case's larger volume, which slows them down, and usally forces them through obstacles to further reduce the gas velocity before they exit the tailpipe. That might be an excellent design for a resonator or muffler, but it's a terrible design for an x-pipe that needs high exhaust velocity to function. Why compromise when you can just install one proper x-pipe near the headers, then add a pair of short bottle-style resonators downstream and have the best of both worlds?

Based on that year 4.7 if youre stock power levels then trying to get it to have higher RPM flow isnt worth it, they dont spin higher than 5800rpm even at that after about 5500 you can feel it running out of steam. The stock exhaust valves are 1.46" Manifold primaries are only 1-1/2" so basically the same size as the exhaust valve, so dual 2.25 or single 2.5 is the best and the OEM Y collector outlet is 2.5" Unless youre pushing 300+ horses then dual 2.5" OEM Dodge cats of that era were already "high flow" so as long as you got the identical ones or a less dense honey combed core like they are from factory.
It just doesnt sound as good under load without a muffler leeast when they straight pipe dual them. Idle is fully chonky and deep, but under load is like a wet fart/clap noise

My buddy had the crew cab version, we did a single pipe, with 1 Magnaflow performance with an exit in front of the RR wheel. It sounded great, the cop even complimented it the next day, (Buddy was speeding, cop heard him coming, lol.) Now it sounded really nice without costing a lot. The other mod was pulling the wire from the TCM. That wire changes timing before a shift. Without that wire hooked up the truck became fun. Have a transmission on standby. Since then I've been looking for a cheap Dakota with a 4.7.

    This has me thinking.
I have a 1990 Corvette that i am doing a complete semi custom resto to.
I am at the point of saving for a massive motor machining and rebuild, nasty cam, heads, et'cetera. Currently, i have cat delete, x-pipe and 2 high end mufflers out back.
I am thinking of doing shorties, h-pipe, x-pipe and no mufflers out back. Should sound nasty! :) if it is to loud, i will be calling Karnage Performance. :)

90 Corvette- Do your manifold/headers as you wish into 2 pipes 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 dia depending on hp (2 1/2" supports up to 500ish hp) bring them back behind trans nice and even and side by side. Now bring these into a 4" dia pipe that you have flattened to 2 1/2" tall by about 5" wide and run this flattened tube down your driveline tunnel back to the rear transverse leaf spring splitting it again into two pipes to finish out your exit on either side at the rear as you wish, muffler or no muffler. I'd at least do a small resonator on either side if your Vette is cat-less. On that car forget the true duals unless you really want that raspy crap. The flattened 4" tube down the tunnel should come close in volume to 8 x one cylinders displacement which acts as a termination box and effectively shortens the length of the exhaust system that the engine exhaust flow "sees". This is going to increase your hp over a twin pipe system with a balance or X pipe and build a lot of torque and will sound rich and big block-ish. I don't suggest Flowmasters on this system. Something with a nice even non turbulent flow through.
Mufflerman 38 years, personally 60,000 muffler jobs and still counting.

@@JG-kv4oi , I like your thoughts on the design.
I will have to seriously consider that when i am to that point.

Put a flowmaster on one side and MWA on the other.

If you have a resonated x-pipe (x-pipe inside of a muffler basically) and a non resonated X-pipe back to back would that count as a double x? Or does the resonated x-pipe cancel that out?

      Still a double X

I think the X into H or H into X pipes are more interesting.

@@tjtrainzCSX i've thought about switching to X into H. I have double X currently but my low end torque kinda sucks and I hear H pipes help with that

too stupidly loud.....put a couple 30" x 21/2" glaspaks on it and an x pipe just ahead of them......and I did performance exhaust before you kids were born

Damn. He should have gone with flowmaster flow fx rounds instead of double x's.
