This was so helpful! Thank you!
great information - thank you so much
Thank you for clearing up so many question. I got a thousand going around in my head and you just answered another. I’m a new annual member and haven’t had time to sit and start with my 30 day challenge but I do get in some videos in so thanks again!
You are so welcome! Definitely dive into that 30 day course, it's a life saver!
Great video, as always.
Thank you so much! You're so sweet!
“Dishwasher safe” that makes sense. Have you seen the weather we are having these days? Like a freaking dishwasher! Lol
From experience... right after painting the poly onto the board, I cover it with a plastic box during the drying process to keep any floating dust off of the wood.
Yes, we definitely recommend this!
Ty!!! Needed this :-) !!
Thank YOU for watching and commenting!
Hi there! Great video - very informative. Does this work on ink jet printable vinyl and will it yellow in the sunlight? Thanks in advanced.
GREAT VID!!!!!!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! :)
Thanks very helpful video
You are SO welcome!❤
First ilysm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tanner and Rachel ❤️❤️❤️❤️
We love YOU so much!
Great video, per usual. 😊 Thanks! I really like the looks of the Polycrylic, but I have a question. I missed the part to apply the 2nd & 3rd coats within 30 minutes. The can states I now have to wait 3 days 😢. Also can states I need to sand before reapplying. Won’t that mess up my vinyl? Obv I must sand “lightly”, but still, I’m paranoid. Thanks 🙏
At last an answer to my question about using vinyl on outside surfaces!! Now about sealing vinyl on mugs, cure for 28 days!?! Should have started mugs in September or October!! I'm bad🤭
Thank you for informative tutorial🤗😉
Hello! So glad you enjoyed the tutorial!! Yes, the 28 day cure time is so crazy, but per the FDA once 28 days has passed it is food safe and dishwasher safe, so it's worth the wait! :) Thank you for your kind words!
Thanks for the How to video! When you are waiting to apply the second and third coats, are you washing your brush each time or do you have a way to store it without the polyacrylic drying on the brush?
Thank you!
Thank YOU for watching and commenting!
Are any of these protecting the wood or just the vinyl. I struggle with making the wood weatherproof not so worried about the vinyl. 🤔
I want to apply text to steering wheel cover. What would be the best vinyl & products to keep it from rubbing off from friction, moisture & cleaning products, & various weather temperatures? I ask these particular questions because the steering wheel over I made for a man did not last as I'm told it peeled off in 3 days. Not sure if he was cleaning his car with chemicals or what happened. Steering wheel cover material is TPR or some type of rubber/plastic combo material.
cool video
thank you!
Hi I have a wood sign and painted it with white matte acrylic paint. I bought black vinyl decals for my sign. I haven’t applied the decal yet because I’m scared and don’t want to mess it all up. Can you tell me if the vinyl decals adhere to matte acrylic paint? Do I need to sand the paint or clean it with something before I apply the decal? Also, I want a nice durable seal once the decal is applied. What kind of sealer do you suggest? Thank you so so much for your advice and help!!!! 😊
I have these little wooden pencil holders that I painted with crayola paint and I let them dry. I have vinyl stickers I'm going to put on them and try and seal. What is the best thing to use to make sure the pain doesnt spread but seal my stickers on it?
Thank ou so much, i was concerned about my milk jug redo for outside, I can now put it outside with the vinyl stickers without concern
You're welcome! :)
Would you do this step before putting holes in the sign to be able to hang it or after putting the holes in? Thank you for the advice! I was planning to just do mod podge but don't have that kind of time to wait
Can the polycrylic water based be put on in your home? What I mean is, I have my little crafting area setup in my room which is fairly large and I'm wondering if it's ok to put it on here. Any feedback is welcomed! Thanks!
Not sure if this is the place to post this question, but when adding a vinyl saying to a make-up bag, pencil bag/box...anything I want it to adhere very well, but cannot iron-on due to what I'm placing the vinyl on, is there a large difference between Premium vinyl or Permanent vinyl? I'm struggling to find a variety in Permanent vinyl. Thank you!
Does Polycrylic protect colored vinyl on outdoor signs from fading? Could I use removable vinyl if the polycrylic protects the colors?
1. I get it use spray adhesive first and let dry so what happens when trying to cut the next day. 2. Can I cut print/cut several decals and then cut???
This may be a duh question, but will the Polycrylic stop fading on colored vinyl for outdoor signs? Also if it does prevent fading, can I use in door only vinyl like orcal 630? Thank you
What would I use on a shower curtain liner that I have put vinyl on it to seal it?
I need help my porch sign the vinyl curled up I used chalk paint on the sign . What should I use to keep this from happening . To seal do I spray a sealer bfore I put vinyl on or after and what works better on pine
Is that you guys on your cricut maker? I want a tutorial on how you made the characters pretty please.
can i use varnish over my white paint instead of shellac before using polycrylic? i used polyurethane and it yellowed my products and i had to redo them. im afraid to seal with anything but varnish! but i dont know how weather proof that is.
What about using multiple forms of sealant? For example, laying down a couple coats of brushed on poly and then the final layer would be spray coat?
Thanks! Is polycrylic in weather even though it's water based? Thanks I appreciate your help so much!!
That’s what I was wondering, too.
I have a question how about tile will the vinyl stick to it and is it ok to use modge podge and then spray polyurethane and leave outside.
Ok I have a question. I have the MINWAX Polycrylic Crystal Clear Topcoat Clear Matte it says interior on it. I put it on a welcome before seeing that is it still ok to put my sign outdoors or do I need to get something else to seal it? The sign is stained and the letters are painted on.
If i am are sticking the Vinyl to a plaque outside that I can’t take down. What is the best sealant to use that cures faster as to not get debris on it?
I’m adding vinyl to metal as a sign for my beauty salon what would b best to seal this so it doesn’t yellow in the sun? Thanks in advance
Our church vinyl banner is faded. I wanted my students to repaint it but it needs to be weatherproof. Which product would be best to use?
Would this work if I put vinyl on top of a vehicle that’s wrapped??
Polysilicon has come out with a one coat product that is pretty thick and very nice to use also.
Thanks for the tip!
Does it yellow in the sun?
Can you use Resin? I find the polyurethane turns yellow in sunlight over time.
How do I clean stained wood with vinyl before sealing with polycrylic? I don’t think I can use rubbing alcohol right?
can i lightly sand ployacrlic on my plastic cup if i have a brush spot
Thank you for this tutorial. Very helpful. Just one question. If your sign is painted white does the polyacrylic yellow the white? I have tried other top coats that have done this. Thanks!
It will most likely not, just make sure you use water based poly.
If I stained a wood round and then added vinyl then added the polyurethane am I ok? Or should I have stained and then polyurethane and then vinyl?
Great video, would it be OK touse the tin polyurethan on wood over the vinyl stencil? Thanks
Sure!!
Polyurethane is not meant for outdoors. It says indoor use only right on the can. The only urethane product made specifically for outdoors is Spar Urethane.
Not is not actually true - there are different types of Poly - some for indoors, some for outdoors. It will tell you on the can if it is interior or exterior poly. I do a lot of woodworking for outdoor furniture and use exterior poly on them all.
Since polycrylic is water-based, is it still good for outdoor use?
How east is it to write on these finishes?? Making a growth chart. Thanks
Thanks Rachel! Can I use the spray to seal decal on car window?
On a car window you do not need to seal this type of vinyl. That is one of the acceptions to our recommendation to seal all vinyl projects. The vinyl will peel up, but overtime. Also, feel free to use ANY type of adhesive vinyl. There is no such thing as permanent vinyl, like some companies advertise for outdoor use, so using what you have will work just fine :)
Will the sign fade if it is in direct sunlight?
I was confused. I thought polycrylic was for indoor and polyurethane was for outdoor. So I bought both. Now I have to plan mugs and glasses a month in advance of gifting to use the dishwasher Mod Podge. LOL silly me. I am always doing things last minute.
Poly is made in two different types - interior and exterior. Ensure to look at the can and it should say what it is for.
I have tried different methods of sealing my outside porch sign but the vinyl keeps lifting. I've sealed the paint or stain, then applied vinyl then added more sealant; I've not sealed the paint or stain, added the vinyl and then sealed but either way it keeps lifting. If also left it all unsealed. Im wondering if it's because it's in direct sun a lot of the day or the cold weather? Anyone have this issue?
Do you reuse the paint brush and if you do how do you recommend cleaning the minwax off of it? Normal dish soap?
Great question!!! Ours is water-based, not oil-based. We would highly recommend getting the water-based formula because it cleans off brushes like a breeze! We just rinse them off with water :)
Very informative, thank you! Does the spray work just as good, in your opinion?
Hi, did you ever get a response to your question? I was thinking of trying out the spray but I’m not too sure.
So polyacrylic will stick to the vinyl and not peel off?
Good tutorial! Can you use a sponge brush?
I had the same question in mind
Can I use a lacquer spray??
Poly is for indoors only, I'm confused why you say to seal with this for outdoors? Shouldn't spar urethane be used for outdoors?
So would the ModPodge gloss water base sealer be a good option to seal vinyl to wood ornaments after the wood is sanded?
Sure!!
Will the white vinyl turn yellow ?
All those items say for indoor use - so does it hold up ?
is it safe to use the poly on something like a mug? i would avoid putting around the lip area but the dishwasher safe modge podge shows the brush strokes something awful.
After a 28 day cure time using polycrylic on a mug or a cutting board or anything for that matter is in fact food safe, per the FDA :)
I made a big welcome sign for outside. For different holiday signs to hang on the welcome sign. I bought them at Michaels. Hubby said they are basswood.
I painted them and then used htv. They turned out so cool!
When we sealed them with polycrylic, the paint bubbled up ruining them.
HELP any suggestions would be great!
TIA
Oh no! This sounds like you haven't allowed your paint to dry.
I would’ve used polyurethane!
Will my vinyl stick to my glass jars? without peeling on the edges with the spray?
yes :) As long as your glasses are smooth and you clean them well, your vinyl will stick wonderfully :)
Now I am really confused 😕
So many people say NOT to seal vinyl because it causes it to bubble underneath the sealant. So now I don't know what to do! I just started making wood rounds (thin ones) which people have seen and are wanting to pay me to make them one. So now I Don know, do I seal the vinyl or no?
Also my can of water-based polycrylic says it's for indoor use only, is it really safe to use for outdoors?
I have a similar question too because the minwax polycrylic sealer that she used is for indoor only
Makers Gonna Learn... I've watched this video a cpl times lol. I am applying vinyl to stained wood for OUTDOOR signs..will this make it WATERPROOF for different weather? I live in Wisconsin and we get ALLLL different weather!! HELP HELP HELP!! They are Christmas gifts!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Yes, the Minwax Polycrylic: amzn.to/2KzC588 will make this waterproof if you cover the entire thing and allow it to fully cure :)
I made an outdoor sign on a yard sale sign. I painted it so could I seal it with polyurethane so the paint don’t wash away when it rains?....Thanks 😊
Great idea!
I'm confused. I have a can of Minwax water-based polycrylic protective finish and it specifically states "for interior use only." But you state it is great for outdoor signs. I'm wanting to protect a door hanger sign with some items painted and other are permanent vinyl. The sign will be on a covered front porch. Would this still be ok to use even though it says for interior used only (and use on interior wood doors, cabinets etc. only)
That is correct, you can use this for your outdoor projects. If you'd prefer not to, you can use Outdoor Mod Podge: amzn.to/3hgRn0I
I created a sign that has scrap book paper, acrylic paint and vinyl wording. What sealer do you recommend that will not make any of my paint smear. I am worried that the poly acrylic sealer might make some of my stuff smear. I really am new at this and this is my first diy craft. This a gift for someone and I would hate to use the wrong thing. Please help and advise.
I'd like the answer to this also
What about polyacrylic spray?
I used spray Minwax Polycrylic on my project. I did a very light coat at first, so it didn't ruin my vinyl. Then did about 4 light coats. It was on wood.
Where did you get the product?
@@DanielleMisc96 you can find the spray at Home Depot, Lowe’s and I think Walmart has it to.
I want to put glitter stripes on a board, can I than spray paint clear and put vinyl over that???
Yes you can :)
What about polyurethane... for vinyl on indoor signs?
Would I also do this for vinyl on a car magnet? Does it cure hard or flexible? Thank you.
it cures hard! you'll need to find something with silicone in it to be flexible
I have used polycrylic on suede boots that I decoupaged .... wearing them most days through the winter , they lasted 2 years ... I am very pleased , as its flexible ...purchased from Jackson’s art supplies ...
What is the spray called?
Can i use uv resistant clear acrylic coating on metal?
You can try it! :)
Is this htv vinyl? I use HTV do I still need to seal it? I’ll seal the wood first and then put down my htv
feel free to use whatever you'd like. You can seal it if you want, but you don't have to. All of those options are just personal preference.
Why satin over gloss? I ask because I just bought the gloss minwax poly and didn’t even consider the satin. Wondering if I made a mistake.
No ma'am, no mistake made! Feel free to use whichever finish you'd like. All of them in this brand works great :)
I’m doing stains wood signs and do you use it before vinyl and after?
Stain the wood then you can apply a thin layer of sealer (if you think your vinyl needs a little extra help sticking) and then apply your vinyl, and then more sealer! :)
@@MakersGonnaLearn thank you so much
Will the Polycrylic turn white paint yellow? I've had to use water based spar urethane on white paint to avoid white paint turning yellow. But I don't know if it will work with vinyl. Guidance please
No, but it will pull stains from the wood so I would seal it with Clear Shellac before using white paint, then the polycrylic.
@@kraftwithkay7331 can i use varnish over my white paint instead of shellac before using polycrylic? i used polyurethane and it yellowed my products and i had to redo them. im afraid to seal with anything but varnish! but i dont know how weather proof that is.
would I be able to use this on a window glass? Like for putting up business hours signs?
We don't recommend sealing glass, no ma'am :) The vinyl will last a good long while without needing to be sealed!
You could mirror the image and apply it to the inside of your glass
I've heard that you should use a 220 grit sanding sponge between each coat. I don't think you all do that. Do we have to sand? I would think that would make it rough looking...
Hello! No, we do not do that. Your choice if you want to, but we dont.
I do woodworking and I lightly use steel wool between coats just to take off any little tiny bumps and then wipe it down with a tack cloth to get ready for the next coat. Works well for me, I'm just now using vinyl graphics and looking for some answers on that subject with spray finishes because they look better than anything brushed on
Good afternoon
Hello!
Do you seal it with one coat first then add vinyl?
Sometimes the viny wont stick to wood it’s self so I’m wondering how it works.
Feel free to do that if your sign is an odd texture and needs a layer of sealer to help it stick :)
I usually do two coats of polycyclic apply the vinyl then do one more coat. It works great for me
I also apply a coat to wood before laying down my vinyl.
I used a sponge brush and got streaks. How could I fix this?
It should even out once dried, but we always recommend a good soft brush, like these Paint Brushes: amzn.to/3eNdSsW
I have used outdoor modpodge and the sign only lasted one season.
What if its oil based Polycrylic ?
How do you store your brush in between coats?
Idk what they do but in my experience with polyurethane is I just put it in a freezer bag and throw it in the freezer! I plan to try it with the polycrillic as well!
Do you seal the back of the sign also?
You do not need to, but you can if you want to. The point of sealing is to seal your vinyl onto your sign with a barrier. No need for the back to have that as well unless you want to aesthetically.
Would you recommend htv on an outdoor wood sign or permanent vinyl?
Did you figure out if htv can work for an outdoor sign??
They say HTV adheres better to wood than permanent, haven't tried it yet but getting ready to start a new project.
I see everyone says HTV on wood is great but no one says anything about having it on wood for outdoor use! I guess trying it to see what happens would be the best thing to do! Lol
I used poly on a wood sign with vinyl and it made the vinyl bubble and I had to redo my order. Where did I go wrong??
Jill I just experienced the same issue and haven't had thus problem before. Did you ever come up with an answer?
I had a similar issue. I wonder if I put the sealer on too thick in one coat, or if it was temperature-related? I don’t see responses to a lot of questions on this page, but I hope you found an answer!
Where do you buy your alcohol pump from?
I scrolled down and found it
Can we use two the mod podge ploy
No, just use one :) No need for both!
@@MakersGonnaLearn Thank you!
The dishwasher safe mod podge says it takes 28 days to fully cure but their regular glossy mod podge also says it takes 4 weeks to cure and I’ve never had to wait that long for my projects to set. Does the dishwasher one actually take 28 days? 😳
Brooke Ford ... yes ... if you wash it before it’s cured, it goes white and sticky again ... which depending how many coats you applied can penetrate to your project your trying to protect ... definitely worth the wait ... or let the person know you’ve give it to to wait ... xx
SENTIMENTAL CRAFTING Oh interesting. I bought some but I haven’t tried it yet. Thanks!
When it’s cured fully it’s great , been using it years
This doesn’t turn the vinyl a yellowish tint ?
Over time it could, but it's not very noticeable. Also any other color of vinyl and it wouldn't be noticeable at all.
Polycrylic is not weatherproof so using water based spar urethane on a sign thats outside in rain alot might be better.
Does this smell/stink badly?
Would the Spray Poly acrylic work too?
It's not going to seal as well, but if it's all you have it's better than nothing!
Thank you
