I've been a Craft Buddy for a while and don't know how I missed this video!!! It helped me out with measuring and making signs!!! Thanks for the amazing content. Finn was a lil guy back then.💙
Great job on how to select lumber. Been doing wood crafts for over 30 years and you hit the nail on the head. The signs were beautiful. I just made your Ronald Reagan quote sign. I did it with a flag background and I absolutely love it. Thank you so much for sharing your talent!
I learn so much from you! I have to quit being afraid and just do it! I’m finally getting good and comfortable with iron on reverse canvases but haven’t ventured out much from those. I love watching you and learning from you! Love the tip of the using same color paint vs mod podge to prevent bleeding! I’ll definitely remember that! Thank you so much for sharing your secrets Whitney! Finn is just too cute and growing up so fast! Seems like he was just born yesterday! 🥰🤍😘
You rock with wood and power tools! TY for this video! You are awesome with what you create! I love the words from special songs you use! I really want a Cricut! 👍💞🌞
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video & share your knowledge with us! You are so talented, I love your channel! Finn is precious 💙☺️
Thank you for sharing your trip to Home Depot and showing us the wood you typically use for your signs. I just started making signs a few months ago and really want to start framing them out more. Been hitting the clearance section of the craft stores but now I can legit say I made it all from scratch!
Hi Whitney! I loved the walk through Home Depot to check out their wood. I was there recently and I really had no idea what I should be looking at, never mind buying! You covered what I need to know to start making my own signs. I was also glad to see your most used Cricut is the Explore 2, that I the one I have and finally started using. ♥
this is a great video! Thank you for sharing your tips and secrets. I have a cricut that I treated myself to last black Friday. I am ashamed to admit, it's still in the box. I need to get it out and play with it. I have created a playlist now entitled 'wood signs how-to' and saved it for when I finally unbox the cricut!
Your signs turned out beautiful! Thank you so much for this video.. I am new to wood signs, but really love making them.. you included so many tips and tricks that I will for sure be coming back to watch again and again to help me with my signs
Love 💗 this You give really great instructions and I really appreciate that so much!!! Also I love the Home Depot trip. I have been trying to teach myself about the different woods and supplies and tools I’m super excited I just got my first ever cordless circular saw to add to my drill and my corded jigsaw collection. Now I want a cordless nail gun !!! Something I have always wanted to do and never took the time for myself until recently. So thanks again and I can’t wait for the nightstand builds 😬🤗
Yay! This makes me so happy. The past 2 years I've done that and being able to build things myself is THE BEST! And I can't wait either - we have to get going on those, we gave ourselves a deadline of 4th of July to have our room done. :)
I love all your projects and I have recreated many of them for my home lol you are such an inspiration and you explain how to make them so well. These signs have been on my list just trying to figure out what I want them to say, now I'm thinking of using my wedding song for them so thank you for giving me an idea. Finn is adorable 😍
I loved using personalized wording that you know you won't/can't find in the store. That's my favorite part of DIYing is making something that is truly. my own :)
I’ve been wanting to do frames for my signs, but just didn’t know where to begin. Thank you so much for putting out such a helpful, easy to follow video!!
Yesssss! Love it and I’m so glad she took us to the store with her, bc I can’t ever find the firring strips(might not be spelled right) so I’ll definitely show this to our guys! Such an informative video…as always!! Love her so much! 🥰🙌🏻
Thanks Lindsey! The furring strips will be in the off the shelf lumber section, typically with the 8 foot long boards. The stores usually have 6 ft, 8 ft, 10 ft, and 12 ft pieces. Typically the framing pieces are only sold in 8 ft, sometimes 10.
Thank you so so much for this content 💜 I've wanted to make things like these so bad & am glad I have the knowledge for finding the materials before I got up enough courage to actually go into Menards & waste $$$ especially with the cost of wood right now 😊 Love all your stuff per usual
These are beautiful!. I love how you show the way you find a, NOT CROOKED piece of wood at home depot...lol Its so crazy how some of those piece are legit ridiculously crooked for no reason...lol The cost of wood these days is giving me the the blues
Loved this video. I have all kinds of pallets I have to tear apart first. But that’s how I want to make signs. What scares me is the tools. I’d love to frame out one with wood.
So so so Cute!! curious what will you do with them once they are hung or do they stand alone with the phrases that mean something to you? either way very nice!!! Little tip for bleeding--use the fine tip paint markers!!! I could never do detail painting with a brush and the markers are almost like holding a pencil!! Hobby Lobby has a good selection. Happy crafting!
That's a great tip Kelly! I plan to hang one over my husband's nightstand and the other over mine, maybe with photos, but I might also keep it simple. I have a couple gallery walls in my house and that's usually where my signs get set up - that and on my mantle :)
Your signs are gorgeous and so high end! I work with vinyl all the time but I don't do a lot of stenciling. As a sign maker yourself, can you tell me why people trim their transfer tape to the exact size of the backing paper? lol. I never understood that.
Thank you so much! I trimmed mine here for 2 reasons 1) so the unneeded extra transfer tape didn't have any chance of pulling up my black paint when I pulled it off. and 2) so I could line up my stencil with the edges of my wood and having it flush helped me see the line. I'm always putting stuff on crooked 😂 so that helps me get it lined up so I don't have to remake things 20 times haha! I hope that helps!
Whitney, I want to know what wood is good to buy at lowes for using the qood cutting blade with my cricut ? I want to be able to make wood cut outs but I don't want to pay the price for the tiny amount u get at the craft stores .
Hi Jennifer, I would suggest bass or balsa wood, the hard part is you need it to be pretty thin to cut with your Cricut and I don't think you can get big sheets that thin at Lowes. You might be able to, but I haven't. I usually get mine from Amazon :)
Depends on the surface, but I do use that for vinyl signs when needed. If it's going outside with vinyl on it, I'd suggest the brush on vs. the spray. It will give you a stronger seal. The spray works great for indoors w/o the elements to contend with :)
Oh girl I feel you. We just bought wood for a Father's Day gift and my husband was like "we have to pump the breaks on wood for a bit, this is getting out of hand" It CRAZY!
For me, it's a preference thing, I like the hand-painted look, but you could absolutely do vinyl instead. You'll want to probably do a coat of brush on polycrylic before you go to apply the vinyl to give it something to stick to. And then seal afterwards.
I find it sooo difficult to “touch up” the paint when it bleeds. Most of the time I end up going to far inwards toward the letter. And making it look worse. Wondering how much is considered normal bleeding...what you showed on your sign? Thanks for all your videos they’ve been very helpful
Sometimes I have no bleeding, other times I have about what I showed. If you're getting much more, you're either putting on too much paint or the stencil isn't sealed down. One suggestion is to use a paint pen for touchups, that can be easier than using a paint brush. That way you have more control over the application. I hope that helps!
Hi Whitney. I am Robin's husband Doug. She watches you all the time. She is in the hospital due to an adverse reaction to a chemo treatment. Is there any way I can get your email address to explain more. She loves your DIYS. And watches you everytime you download.

Thank you Lindsey! It's all going so fast! 😱
I love that you use song lyrics. So cool. Great idea to paint the background colour first. I find it really helps with bleeding. Thanks for sharing.
So pretty!!! Thank you for sharing!! 🥰

Oh yes, wood prices are NUTS 😱 I've gotten home with too many crooked pieces to not check every one now!
Finn is getting so big, still would like a cricket joy
He is! He's walking (well running now) everywhere! Never a dull moment at our house!
Loved this video. I have all kinds of pallets I have to tear apart first. But that’s how I want to make signs. What scares me is the tools. I’d love to frame out one with wood.
I was very apprehensive of tools and at first, it is a little scary. But after you get going, you will learn and feel more comfortable :)

5:20 How do you use that mitre saw please? Do you cut before or after the line you draw? Thanks a heap!

@@Whiskeyandwhit yes! It makes perfect sense to me now. Idk why I never thought of it that way. Thank you!
I find that the cheap giant roll
Of clear contact paper works better than the cricut stencil paper for making stencils
Great idea - I've also used Dollar Tree contact paper for stencils!
Whitney, I want to know what wood is good to buy at lowes for using the qood cutting blade with my cricut ? I want to be able to make wood cut outs but I don't want to pay the price for the tiny amount u get at the craft stores .

Does that spray you used to seal the signs work for sealing vinyl?
Depends on the surface, but I do use that for vinyl signs when needed. If it's going outside with vinyl on it, I'd suggest the brush on vs. the spray. It will give you a stronger seal. The spray works great for indoors w/o the elements to contend with :)
Lately buying lumber makes me weep lol.
Oh girl I feel you. We just bought wood for a Father's Day gift and my husband was like "we have to pump the breaks on wood for a bit, this is getting out of hand" It CRAZY!
What is the benefit of making a stencil over applying vinyl letters?
For me, it's a preference thing, I like the hand-painted look, but you could absolutely do vinyl instead. You'll want to probably do a coat of brush on polycrylic before you go to apply the vinyl to give it something to stick to. And then seal afterwards.

Tha k you SO very much for sharing your wisdom! Valerie County
What kind of nail gun you use???
It's a cordless Ryobi! The exact one is linked in the description :)
I made your Ronald Reagan quote and your popsicle as garland
Yay thats so awesome Jules!!
Hi Whitney. I am Robin's husband Doug. She watches you all the time. She is in the hospital due to an adverse reaction to a chemo treatment. Is there any way I can get your email address to explain more. She loves your DIYS. And watches you everytime you download.
Hi Doug, I'm so sorry to hear that! I hope she's doing better today. Sure - my email is whiskeyandwhit@gmail.com
It's burnished, not varnished, lol! You're so talented :)
Oh no, I said that, but be my midwest accent that made it sound like varnished 😂
Does that not make the sign weigh a lot?
Nope - they are actually very light with the 1x2s :)
