How To Build A Full Size Bed Frame for Under $50

We show you how to make a easy, simple and affordable bed frame for a full size mattress with only 10-2x4's and a sheet of plywood.
Cut List:
Side rails: 2 - 79"
Platform cross rail: 1 - 52"
Headboard cross rail: 1 - 48"
Side rail supports: 4 - 3' 1/4" (2x4 ripped in half then cut to length)
Head & Footboard rails: 4 - 55"
Headboard styles: 2 - 40"
Headboard middle slats: 5 - 22 1/2"
Footboard styles: 2 - 17 1/2"
Footboard middle slats: 5 - 10 1/2"
Safety rail rail: 1 - 40"
Safety rail styles: 2 - 19"

Sorry for all the comments. I figured out the headboard frame for the left and right sides with the 1.5 cutout for the side rails is supposed to be 41 inches to be able to fit the hb cross rail and 22.5 middle headboard styles. Dsmn that was a headache
You should drill some holes in your plywood. Had the same set up before, but humidity from sleeping bodies migrates down through the mattress and can collect under if there's no airflow

Same here, had a mattress grow mold underneath because of no airflow.
Drilling holes will definitely work, but you need a lot of them, and flip your mattress every 6 months. You can also cut slats out of the plywood with your circular and add another 2x4 underneath for more stability. A downside of using plywood either way is if the edge isn't sealed and gets wet, it'll rot and start to fall apart. So I would do the bottom with just 2x4 and 1x2 as slats, and then this bed could really last a long time

If you don't have a box spring, drill holes in the ply wood to allow air flow so there is no moisture buildup
I have never had an issue before and I live in the Southern US.
I agree. In southern california I've seen instances where mold grew underneath the bed. They were on the floor or makeshift plywood platform.
Very nice work. I realize its for a toddler but do you think the 2x4 rails would be strong enough in the middle to support a couple adults? I am thinking of using 2x6 rails. Thanks
Thank you. You may be correct. 2x6 would be a nice upgrade. However, I have jumped around on the bed with my daughter and there was no weakness detected.
Mine is over kill but a 2x6 will work just fine. I used a 2x12 side board with a notched 2x6 accepting 2x4 slats. It was built to last many many years.
Hi was curious what the 32.5 inch styles are for? I got almost everything built and dont see the application for them. Thanks in advance
They are the sides of the headboard. I actually miswrote their size a while back. I had made a modification to the headboard making it taller to 40". This should not effect your build as you will just have a taller headboard. Additionally, the headboard cross rail should be 48" and not 50". Apologies.
Am I correct that this bed supports a mattress that is 52" wide (the length of the platform cross rail) and 76" deep? For a taller mattress, would it be better to move the side rail supports down further than 3/4"?
The size is correct. It is for a full sized mattress 76 x 52 x 11. You can modify it as you like. Why move the rails supports down?

I used 2 1/2" screws on the majority of the project. I used 1 5/8" on the head and footboards in the pockets I drilled. I used 2 1/2" lag bolts. Hope this helps.

I got a quick question would the 2 headboard styles be 37" instead of 32-1/2"? Because I couldn't get 67-3/4" square measurement out of my headboard.
i made a modification to the height in the middle of the build. You can make the headboard any height you want.
The point in the video is to use your diagonal measurements as a check for square. My original design was 32.5", I think I ended up at 40.

Thank you. Going to be renting a place again soon, so I need to be able to take the bed apart. And the slats are much easier to deal with, but I'll need a notch to go along the sides that the slats hide into so that it's level with the sides. My challenge is I want to be able to build and mount a headboard later. Another are the legs, I might want one in the middle or one in the middle of a side where i might get out of the bed, just to give it support where there will be continual concentration of force. What I will take from your video are the lap joints for joining the sides and ends, nice job. I was going to use bolts, but the lag screws... I didn't think of using those. Very beefy. I was also thinking of using 2x3s instead of 4s, to try and reduce the weight some more. Does the mattress slide around a little from side to side with your design? You might want to remind people about the plunge depth, I had to assume you set the saw bite depth on the circular saw, to 0.75"? I do like the forgiving measurements of the lap joints. In division of labour, just like you do your cuts all together, I do kreg holes in only one position on my table. I lay out my piece and i mark the holes and direction with a pencil, usually 2 per piece per end. Then i put all the wood beside in a stack on my table and i clamp a piece down and do 2 holes, then the next piece. I don't move, the clamping and drill pattern is the same, only the wood moves. I find this works well, but sometimes I make a mistake. It doesn't give you a little pilot hole in the receiving piece but i find a strong clamping when attaching solves this, plus i usually glue, especially a corner. This is just experience, i am not a carpenter at all.

How is the headboard and foot board 55 in wide, when a full size bed is 54inches wide? If you in cut the rail you subtract 1.5inches on both sides which gives you 52 inches. I'm just learning and like this design.

Yes, I designed it to be 1 inch bigger than the mattress. When you notch in the side rails, you will still end up with the same overall dimension of 55 inches as the head and foot board widths don't change.
Country Living Experience hahahahaha see I'm still learning. Wow I feel like a idiot. I did change how tall the headboard and footboard is. I wanted it a little taller and my side rails are 2x6. Also I'm having a hard time doing the lap joints, it ain't turning out as pretty as yours

They came from two sheets of plywood. The residual plywood was used for other projects.

I would thing the design should be scalable to King. Isn't King-size double the width of Twin?
@@danfarrow4857 yes double the width exactly. Our king size mattress has two twin box springs under it.
is it cheaper in the long term as a full board does not allow a mattress to breath so will go moldy?
I detect sarcasm. I have never had a mattress develop mold on it while sitting on a platform style bed. Longest time for our other mattress is 5 years.
No sarcasm intended, it must be due to climate what affects that. here in the UK it can be a big issue and lots of people in America have mentioned it in other videos :)

Where do you get 2x4x8's for $2.50-$3.50?? At Home Depot theyre about $5.50 and at Lowes they're about $7.50....
I made the bed 3.5 years ago. Those were the prices back then.

I am not sure if you are asking if it is possible or that you want me to do an additional video. It is surely possible to build a bookcase. I personally don't have time to add one to my daughters bed right now. Maybe in the future sometime I will think about it.
Would a twin size mattress fit under this? I'm looking to make a full size bed that would allow a twin size trundle to fit under the bed for my older boys who share a room when the oldest is home from college. Thanks!
It would not currently fit a twin underneath. It would be too thick. You can easily modify the height to accommodate it though.

Just so anyone's wondering and so that u dont gotta go back to the store again like I did, u need six 55 inch rails to follow his plan exactly not 4.
That is not correct. Where do you get the other 2 from? 2 for the footboard and 2 for the headboard. Don't add in the platform support under the bed that is 52" or the headboard cross rail that is 48". Those two are not lap jointed.

Ok. I remeasured the bed. I did make a modification. I made the headboard styles taller by 7.5". So they should be 40. But if you cut them at 32.5" as I wrote earlier, you would simply have a shorter headboard. Additionally, I miswrote the headboard cross rail width in the cut list. It is 48" not 50".
How about building a storage bed with 2 x 4
Maybe in the future I can schedule a project like that. Thanks for the suggestion
