I grew up watching his reviews back in the late 90s - early 2Ks when it was Gametrailers. Crazy nostalgia. Back when games used to be great. Jones is legendary
This isn't surprising, Astro Bot is exactly what Playstation and PS5 needed. We need fun games that are vibrant and exciting because videogames are veering too far into the realms of emotional storytelling. I love the versatility of videogames, but Astro Bot reminds us that every now and then, we can receive a joyful old-school platforming experience.
If anything this should be a massive wake-up call to Sony who have been pushing many teams to make Live Service games to catch a slice of the Fortnite pie. Live Service trash like Concord is not why people like Playstation; they want fun and cool games with a ton of charm and love behind the project. Concord was a backwards thinking game with a tiring template, felt very by the numbers, made by immature people who openly mock gamers. Astrobot is what people want from PlayStation, a cool game that is putting a smile on players faces. It's not trying to force or push anything on you, or make you feel like you're playing a discount Overwatch knock-off at best-buy. Astrobot is just a great game by people who clearly love video games.
Crazy how Sony went from having had one of their biggest fails in their video gaming history to delivering seemingly one of the best games of the generation in the same week
Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart was the closest game behind Astro's Playroom to utilise the full potential of the dualsense imo. More games need to follow suit
I think this stands out so much ch because it's the first non Nintendo AAA game to come out in what feels like forever that's just focusing on being fun, there's no emotional story, no elaborate skill trees, no crafting, no open world shenanigans, no battle pass, no season pass, just pure fun game mechanics. More of this please.
They were the king of platformers at some point, don’t forget the likes of Spyro, Crash, Jack and Daxter, Sly Cooper, R&C (which is still going), ecc. But they definitely stepped back from the genre in the PS3 era, so it’s amazing to see Astro’s success.
I don't want to hear anyone complaining about 10-15 hours being too short when all I hear is how people want "smaller more handcrafted experiences vs. open world games". Vote with your wallet! Buy this game and show Sony we want more of this!
Astro bots playroom was something really special. Specially, as a gateway for entering the PS5 experience. Will look forward for this one because looks so so entertaining.
Games like this are what make the extra Dualsense features worth it and not gimmicky. Devs need to take note. Things like the motion controls that can lead to amazing mechanics such as Gyro Aim and other intuitive features. And the Touchpad which can act as an extension of the D-Pad for additional button mapping. And just the use of haptic feedbacks can really add to the immersion of a game. Would be nice if Xbox got with the program and updated their controller to help incentivize these devs to use all these excellent features.
I mean it's still gimmicky even if it only happens every so often that a game uses these features to their full potential. Last one that did it so well was again Astro Bot lol.
@Ayoul Returnal, Horizon, TLOU, Ratchet and Clank, Ghost of Tsushima....a lot of the 1st party exclusives utilize pretty much all (or most) of these features well. It would be nice if more 3rd party took advantage of them though.
More games need to have "fun" as their core goal. It used to be the norm, rather than the exception, and I'm glad we're getting some of that old magic back with this game 😊
I get what you are getting at, but I don't think video games of the past were supposed to be mostly "fun" at their core. I would not call the horror games of PS1/2 gen "fun" for example. I did not have "fun" playing Silent Hill. I was *engaged*. I think there are plenty fun games at their core today. They just don't come often from the AAA scene besides nintendo. Helldivers 2, for example, is pure unadultrated fun.
@grizzlybearking1878 ehh, I've had plenty of days playing HD2 that were not fun. I'm here now writing this comment when I was planning on loading up HD2 again, but too many bad experiences from toxic squads have almost completely ruined my enjoyment of the game unfortunately. I'm probably going to have to wait for squads/guilds to be added before I consistently enjoy my experience
Spent about 2 hours playing this tonight. I go to sleep still with a smile on my face. I don’t think a game has made me feel like this since Mario Galaxy/64/World or the original Uncharted trilogy. This is what games should be.
Not even watching the review until I've played it myself but I'm not even slightly surprised that Team Asobi are earning such accolades as they are with this game. Hopefully this is an important lesson for Sony.
Astro Bot is one of those characters where good gameplay carries the whole thing. His design and style only really click because of the whimsy that they allow when platforming. Still, with all that, the final score did shock me a bit lol. Glad that Team Asobi continues to stick the landing.
Need more games like this please! Miss the platformers adventure games. Bring this genre back instead of all those serious , depressing reality story telling. There is a fan base that want these games to thrive and wouldn’t take forever to develop I’m sure
Why have you guys stopped doing reviews!?! Honestly it’s the best part of what you guys do. I’ve been following you since the game trailer days and your other content is fine overall but the beating heart of this page is the reviews. I feel like I’ve lost a friend.
It's not a launch game, but it's a great reminder of what launch games used to be. Quality, enjoyment and lots of gameplay time for a great first impression with a new console.
Easy Allies! Finally a review closer to 5 than 10 minutes. I still hold Dunkey's best reviews as the best game reviews ever, not because they're funny, but because they're short and generally don't spoil very much. I could've done without knowing about the Kratos level and going into detail about secrets exits and bonus worlds makes the pacing still drag a bit. But all in all, this is one of the best reviews Easy Allies has ever put out in my opinion. I know most of you hold these guys as the holiest of Gods, and I've followed them since the Gametrailers era and have watched 90% of their content. I only tell people who I think are already superb how I think they can be even better. And yes, I know, nobody asked me :)
I strongly disagree. First of all, in my opinion, Dunkey spoils the hell out of games in his reviews. He shows way too much and includes things that other reviewers don't reveal. In the case of Astro Bot, I don’t mind both of him and Easy Allies showing Kratos (though again, Dunkey shows way more than necessary for a review), but why did they have to show the Ape Escape level? It wasn’t in any of the trailers, and those levels are some of the best surprises to discover in the game.
@@orihirshfeld387 Always interesting with people who disagree. I wouldn't call Dunkey's Astrobot video a review. Look at all of his videos marked "Dunkview", like Bayonetta 3, Armored Core and Neon White. The Neon White review is 2:28 long and there's nothing lacking from that review. Cut the joke at the beginning and it's 2:14. What do you think of that one?
