    I bought the tropicals set and I think that palette is a good mixing palette. It get gives you a spilt primary and good neutrals. I was going to buy two pallets but after playing with just that pallet I realized I didn’t need another one.

    This almost have the consistency of my Van Gogh, but the Van Gogh has Classic colors, and these have the fresh new pigments of almost like pastels! I like them! They are fun to play with! And they ahve a reasonable price, although they come not too cheap ... but, it's okey!

      Yev Y didn’t happen sadly (if there are they’re expensive). Just go buy a Daniel Smith tube to refill the tray. For tropical, I believe the collors area yellow ochre, has a yellow, orange, quin rose, quin magenta, burnt umber, yellow green, phthalo green dark and phthalo green, cobalt blue, French ultramarine, and purple

    Very interesting. I did exactly the same thing with my two Prima sets which also happened to be the same as yours. I managed to get 20 colours in: 7 on the top and bottom rows and 6 sideways in the middle. Interesting to see the different choices. I also ditched the white and grey as well as the black. I decided on the darker orange as it was so easy to mix a lighter version with the 'new gamboge' type yellow. I keep it as a cute, fun little palette for playful or illustration type painting. The other palette now holds my travel set of Daniel Smith paints. BTW, I managed to get the annoying sticker off the front by rubbing and peeling as much of the paper as I could get off and then I massaged in peanut butter to remove the rest of the sticky residue. it took a little work but now i have a nice, clean lid with no scratches.

    Actually in the classics set pinky is the only color with a rating of one star light fastness while the other colors are three star lightfastness. In the tropical set hurricane
    (The third color on the top row)Is the only one with a two star lightfastness while the rest are three star. They also have a website Link: www.myprimaplace.com/watercolor-confections/

    I signed up for an Amazon credit card and got my order 50% off, so I bought 6 different sets of these paints. I swatched mine out so I know which came together, then took all of the paints out of their boxes and separated them into reds & pinks, greens, blues, etc. Then I swatched those groups too. I found too that these won't replace a basic set, but are good to expand into new colors.

    Hello Irit, Thank you for the review. I am new to watercoloring and we have a great craft store in our little town. She got the Prima's in so I did end up buying the first three sets.I had nothing else to compare them to so I was happy I got them. When you did the review on the Pastel Dreams, I to like some of the colors butnot all of them. So what would you recommend to complement the sets I got as far as colors that might be missing.

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  8 років тому +4

      JoAnne Ferguson hi! wow that's a tough question to ask. I don't use a lot of pastel watercolors, and I don't think many companies make ones that one can buy individually. I guess if you wanted a pastel watercolor palette the best would be to mix your own using white... and then there's personal preferences and what you paint... ask 100 crafters/ watercolorists and you'll get 100 different palettes... I know that's not very helpful! I'll give it some thought and look through my paints to see if I can suggest some nice softerr shades. I would suggest mixing your paints from the other sets with the white one and seeing what comes out!

    Thank you for this review - I have both sets and was hemming and hawing over how to combine them - which five to leave out - there were two I really wanted to keep! - but I was able in fact to make room for 7 in each row - so 21 pans :) - even with the clip insert in place I'd like to do the same with the pastels and shimmers or perhaps pies if I can find them at a price as good as these two were [I paid about $25 combined for both]

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  7 років тому

      You're welcome! I did put those two sets together, but in a large 24 half pans tin. I think the shimmering lights set is a little repetitive, with lots of very similar colors... Decadent pies has more of a variety and some interesting colors that the other sets don't have. Thanks for watching!

    Seems like a good basic colour combination. Not sure if they're single pigment. I can imagine that you can mix quite a lot of colour combos from those, but this doesn't seem to have been your experience.

    I bought two sets of these paints when they were new. A lot of UA-camrs encouraged people to buy them for the nice quality tins, because you could get them for $11 each. I wonder what they were thinking with the Classics set, that barely there pink and 3 other colors wasted on white, gray, and black. You'd have to buy it for the tin.

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  Рік тому

      I agree! What I can say now with a perspective of several years since these sets came out and having countless others, mostly artist grade is this- I still use these but only when I'm painting with my kids. The tins are super versatile and so I have curated some palettes combining all the sets I had, removing the metal insert and so being able to insert about 24 half pans in each tin. Most of the colors are easy to work with and they are intense, but they don't get too gooey, so really great for painting with kids!

    I didn't even know - that - there's several kinds of them, I just bought the 'tropical' - because of a lady on UA-cam showing a "gorgeous" watercolor of the tropical, and it was quite a pastellike pigment, so I bought it, because I don't have something like this! But, anyhow, thanks for the review!

    I have collected 11 Prima sets. Bought all of them together. That’s why I regretted buying them after. I could see the paints are not as transparent and pigmented as the artist quality Watercolor. It is a bit chalky and opaque, I could see the sediments of pigments when painting. With this price I could already buy a big lot of Daniel Smith 5Ml tubes !! It’s not a bad Watercolor, but definitely the quality doesn’t match with the price. It’s not artist quality paints .

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  7 років тому +2

      If you're set on the Prima brand, I'd get either the Classics or the Tropicals. If you get both sets, you will have a great variety. If I had to choose just one Prima set, it would probably be the Tropicals. although the classics has some great basic colors (it also has black & white which I hardly ever use...). Prima also offer now their paints in open stock, so you could assemble your own palette, or get one set and add a few favorite colors to it from the open stock. If you are open to other companies, I have some more reviews on my channel. Hope that helps!

      Both versatile, tropical doesn't have black and white which is great... You can pick either one, look at the colors you love. You can also pick one and then add a few shades that you feel like you need, the palette can hold another row of paints in the middle.

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  5 років тому +1

      Hmmm... Tough one ;) Depends on the set. I think the tropicals and classics are worth it, because similar sets that come in a metal tin cost roughly the same. The other Prima sets have a more limited and specific color palette, and for those I probably wouldn't pay that amount unless I really liked most of the colors in a set and didn't have similar ones in my collection. Look for sales and a good deal on several websites. If you're in the UK, try Jackson's house brand of watercolors. Or White Nights. Very affordable and superior to the prima ones in my opinion. Jackson's also offer metal tins. White nights come in plastic palettes (they are nice, but not as versatile as the metal ones). Hope that helps!

  • @hansendesigns
    @hansendesigns 7 років тому

    Imho, By the time you spend $40 on two boxes of these, you could have a good smaller, more versatile palette of lightfast professional watercolors, or even a big student grade w&n cotmans set (in a plastic travel box) which is mostly highly lightfast. YMMV

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  7 років тому +4

      I partially agree ;) At the moment these two sets can be found on Amazon.com for less than 30$. That is a tough price to beat for 24 half pans. Most of the people who use these are crafters and some graphic designers, and they create work that I'm pretty sure is not expected to last for generations, or hung in direct sunlight. Cotmans are a great option, but they are not as vibrant as these, nor do they come in these lovely tin boxes ;) Other brands that are more lightfast and comparable in color vibrancy are more expensive. So all in all, I do consider these a good deal and good value for money. But that's just my personal opinion, and I'm sure others think differently :) Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

      @iritlandgraf  6 років тому +1

      Good question. Since (as far as I know) Prima hasn't made the information about pigments and other data (lightfastness ratings etc.) available, we don't know. I would say these are great quality for crafters, they perform well. Artist grade paints have information that tells you exactly how the color will behave and if it will fade in time, so you know if you should use it on pieces you want to last for decades looking the same. For me, I use watercolors in journals and such, as long as the colors are pretty, that's all I need :)

      I don't have many Holbein paints, so can't really compare, but the ones I have are lovely. I think it's a matter of budget and if you like tube paints or pans as Holbein are more available in tubes. I'd say you can't go wrong with either, but Holbein do have a larger paint range. Also, if you're on a budget, check out the PWC line from Shinhan, they are pretty comparable to Holebein :)

    Did you check with the actual Prima company to make sure that these paint set aren't counterfeit? I've been seeing so many well know and sought after counterfeit products being sold. For example, Kyle Geners lip kits, clinique products, even honey mixed w/corn syrup from Asia. They can only check so many articles coming off the ships in big crates, and they may catch 1% if that of counterfeit items. They said on the documentary that if you find a better deal than what you'd normally expect, blurred images when compared, "as seen on UA-cam" looks slightly different, or missing information you'd normally expect to see on an expensive item, like artist grade paints. Just sayin...who knows unless we really do our home work. Kyle Gener didn't find out for about a year that her lip and other make-up kits were being forged/counterfeited.
