  • This is the Tropicals watercolor set from Prima Marketing. I bought it at US $20 and the paints are more intense than I expected.

    That's how I solve any of life's problems. "Uh oh! This was supposed so be yellow... I'm just going to cover it with black and ignore it" haha! Great review! I think I might have to invest in a set for travel!

    Me: Oh cool, a cheap watercolour set that comes in a box.
    Teoh: Ah, a good watercolor box. Oh look! Free watercolors! Nice surprise there!
    I can't stop laughing at how Teoh insists it's a watercolour box with free paints

    Thank you so much for this review! I was really curious about how these watercolors handled, but most of the reviews were by crafters who aren't going to test as thoroughly as a fellow artist would. This was a big help!

    I know this is an old video but just in case anyone is looking to buy it... they are curated premixes for the most part, there is a list of pigments, lightfastness, etc on the art philosophy website now. They do have names, and you can buy refill pans if you wish. The color selections are intended for crafters to be used as a set, thus the selection of colors which coordinate with each other...not like a typical fine art palette which gives you basic pigments intended to be mixed extensively. Many of the colors are 2, 3, or even 4 pigment blends.

    I purchased one of these a while back. I already owned some Cotman’s and a Sakura Koi box. After a while I decided I preferred my Cotman’s, so I repurposed the tin to make a smaller, more portable palette. I can actually fit 7 half pans per row, so I have 21 colours in this tin. I should try for a more limited palette, but I just can’t decide what to take out.

    I have been pretty impressed with Korean pigments as of late. The mission gold watercolors are amazing. I also use an artist grade Mungyo pastel from there. They can hold their own on the artist grade levels and are more affordable. Hey Teoh. I have a Kremer box that does the same thing as your box and bends down. Mine is because it is loose I guess from wear. I took a toothpick and stick it in there and it fixes the bending down issue. I don't leave it in there and close the hinge with the toothpick in there. Just when I paint I stick the edge in there, and then take it out when I am done. It doesn't take up any space in the box and it'll fix that issue for you. Thanks for all your work here!

    Any chance you might review the "Decadent Pies" set in the future? I bought a set of these (in addition to the "tropical") mostly for the metal palette and there is a silver metallic in "Decadent Pies" set that is perfect for showing the patina on some weathered outdoor furniture and driftwood in my yard. Like the "Tropicals" no pigment info. on this set either; I'm wondering what you would call these colors? This set has a lot of very dark darks (I know you like those) as well as some lighter flesh tones.

    I have had this set for more than two years now and I have really enjoyed it although I found some limitations for "regular artistic use" (for lack of a better term) that I would like to share for those (still) interested in this set. This is based on my own use combined with the pigment composition that the youtuber The Spin Doctor managed to obtain from the company:
    1) both blues contain PB 29 Prussian Blue and Tikki, the only brown, is a mixture with a yellow pigment (PY14). Because of that I've found it almost impossible to mix the classic grey/black from a blue and brown with just this set. But the set has many other options to mix a black so it is not a very big issue.
    2) Several colors are not lightfast (unlike what the company claims) precisely because of the PY14 pigment. It is found in Tikki, Parrot, Palm and Coconut. Regular pigment sellers give it a mid lightfastness score (4-5 out of 8 for instance). I have also done a small lightfastness test in my window and in a few weeks (in late spring) the colors clearly got less yellow.
    Palm becomes a cooler green.
    Tikki becomes a warmer brown.
    Coconut does not change that much. It just gets a bit duller like a regular yellow ochre since PY42 is the only pigment left.
    The biggest change occurs in Parrot which becomes way less vibrant and yellow in masstone and the diluted wash basically disappeared. And since it's what serves as a cool yellow that kind of sucks :/
    The Prussian Blue (Ocean) changed a tiny bit but like any other Prussian Blue.
    I did not detect any change in the swatches in my sketchbooks however.
    I really enjoy using them to sketch and exercise but I definitely stay away from some of them (especially Parrot) when I'm painting something I may want to hang or give to someone.

    I have the Classic and Decadent Pies. Some are very difficult to rewet -- specifically the pink (#2). The colors are very pretty, but when I try mixing a blue and red I don't get a true purple. Straight from the pan is better than mixing. Also, the light blue and grey (in the Classics set) are mixed with white, so sometimes the paint colors separate. I do plan on refilling with better paints when I use up the colors I have. The wells stain easily, but I can fix that with a spray enamel paint. All things considered, it's not terrible for the price. The box alone is worth the $20.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  8 років тому +1

      +Sarah O I'm thinking of trying the Classic and Decadent Pies too. Haha. As for the staining wells, I suggest just leaving them the way they are because they are going to stain eventually. As you've seen in my demo, the yellow stained the well instantly. Perhaps when it gets too bad, then that's the time to spray it with enamel paint.

      Thanks for this review. Your reviews are always so fair. Rust-Oleum gloss enamel spray was recommended as an enamel that would work well and would be less likely to stain. I'll let you know if I actually try it. :D

    Hi Teoh...I just received the Prisma tropical Watercolor set. How do you keep the little pans in the box? My pans seem smaller than yours and there seems to be mire space left after I put the pans in. I was thinking of using glue dots to hold them in...any suggestions?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 років тому

      Why use glue dots? Are they not tight and fall out easily? If so, take out the pans, press down those metal holders, and put the pans in again (vertically), and they should snap into place tightly. That's how I put them in this video.

    Subscribed!! I love your style! I stumbled on your reviews looking for a budget-friendly paint set. I'm not a professional painter, but I love dabbling in watercolors when creating handmade cards. I started with some very inexpensive paints at my local hobby store, but now I'd like to get a travel-portable set. I'm in between Prima Marketing and Van Gogh. They both make a set that's geared towards botanicals, my favorite. Which is better quality?

      +TerrieJ DimestoreDivaTV If you want to get the 3 Prima sets, I'm going to guess that you have a usd $45 budget. With that budget, I suggest getting the Prima Marketing Tropicals set, then either get the Daniel Smith Essentials set of 6x5ml tubes, or the Mission Gold set of 9x7ml tubes (slightly over usd $30, this gets my recommendation). This way, you will have a portable box, and you have some very high quality paints to work with. When it comes to transparency, which do you think is better: winsor & newton cotman or prima?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 років тому

      +Abbie M It is not about the brand when it comes to transparency. There are opaque and transparent colours in both brands. It is just whether they are in the particular set you are buying. I would recommend getting the usual 12 half pan metal box for the box.

    I have been very tempted to buy this set but I'm holding out a bit more until I get more info. on the light-fastness.....any thoughts? Prima is well known in the scrapbooking world so I was wondering about the grade of these colours. Could you please, PLEASE do the review of your Gansai Tambi half-pan set that you said at the beginning of the year you would do? I am very interested to know your opinion on how these compare with the 'western style' paints in terms of flow and other properties (transparency, granulation if any etc.) I have the holbeins which I use and love so am intrigued by how these might compare with them. And finally thank you again for taking the time to do these videos. Your channel is well respected and well appreciated in the artistic world and rightly so!

    Hi Teoh, I know that you have reviewed koi water colours and wanted to ask you about the issue I am having.the paint islayering or cracking on the top of the pans in the case, i wonder if I am doing something that is making this happen it does not seem to effect the way the paint's working but is not creamy. joan

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 років тому

      The paint may be too dry and the binder is not sticky enough. It does not affect the quality of the colours so it's not really a big deal.

  • @Vgudorf
    @Vgudorf 8 років тому +1

    These are more than adequate for crafting purposes. The box alone makes it worth the money, because if you search for empty watercolor boxes through US venders, you'll often find them priced at well above 50 dollars! But like you said Teoh, this set gives you ZERO information about what you're causally getting (Numbers? Really, now....!) For artists, it would be good to have been given at least a warm and cool version of each primary, but these sets clearly aren't geared that way. Rather, they are marketed so as to make buyers feel it necessary to buy every one of the sets they make. Many crafters will fall prey to that ploy...These paints are not likely artist quality, so lightfastness will probably be an issue, if it means anything to you. They'll work just fine for sketchbooks, though, given that those are generally kept shut and never spend much time in direct sunlight. I think I'll order some of these paints for the awesome box, and fill them with pan paints with known pigments, and of time tested quality.
